Trey Ratcliff8,773,253Join Me in London for a fun and free photowalk! See http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2015/01/31/london-photowalk-feb-14-3-pm/ for more! Many Grand Prizes, including the DJI Inspire 1 Quadcopter!  http://www.dji.com/product/inspire-1 The last one we did 5 years ago in 2010 was Absolutely Amazing, and I want to do it again with y'all! I am SO Excited for this event.  It will be quite strange to come back from the remote bits of sensory-deprived Antarctica to the opposite-world of sensory-overload London! If you've never been to a photowalk before, no worries. Come, bring a friend or your family, get a camera in everyone's hands, and yes, mobile phones and things like this are perfectly fine! :)  We'll combine this one with a really fun photo contest, and there are more details on that below. The Deets: - Facebook Event Page: http://goo.gl/xOSgZk  – Hashtag: #TRLondon2015 – Time Start: Saturday, February 14, 3 PM – Time End: Probably around 6 PM at a pub where we can all buy drinks, hang out, etc. We can keep on taking pictures in the bar! haha :) – Location Start: South Bank right outside the National Theatre (Google Map – http://goo.gl/DYx7iu and How to get to the National Theatre: http://goo.gl/v1hl5k ) – Location End: Slug and Lettuce Bar -  http://goo.gl/djxIMK – Route: http://goo.gl/SwJMRm – Plan: I’ll say hello to everyone and give everyone some artistic and technical goals for the day. I’ll talk through my camera setup and discuss the whole plan for the evening. Then we’ll all walk around like a huge centipede to find our photographic muses for the day! I’ll stop 5 or so times and we’ll all congeal into a slime-mold at which point I’ll set up for a formal shot and talk about my settings, framings, what I’m trying to communicate with the shot, etc. You are ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions any time… Please don’t hesitate! :) – Grand Prize: 5 Unlimited Shopping Sprees in the new Stuck In Customs store at http://store.stuckincustoms.com  – Everything in there that is downloadable can be yours! :) (About $3,000 in prizes) – How to Win: Take an interesting photo of a fellow PhotoWalker (or several PhotoWalkers) and then post it to Any Social Media with the #TRLondon2015 hashtag. Be creative and try new things! Get close, get far, get low, get high (hehe), get interesting subject matter in the background, etc. Have fun with it — you can take and post and share as many photos as you like! Of course, all the time we’ll be taking photos of other things too, the amazing buildings, landscapes, bridges, and the like, but only the photos of fellow PhotoWalkers will be for the prize. I know photographers often really enjoy taking “Street Photos” of other people but sometimes can be a bit shy or afraid to ask. Well not here, you all have permission…it’s open season! :) – How I choose the 5 winners: I’ll scan all social media about a week after the event for that #TRLondon2015 tag and choose 5 of the photos that I think are the most interestinTrey Ratcliff London PhotoWalk 2015! Chris Chabot162,021I'll be in town for work for 2 days, and I'd love to have breakfast and shoot around down town about with you all; I missed you guys! We'll meet at Sears Fine Food at 9am for breakfast, and then we'll take to down town for some of the fine SF photography we all know and love . Hope to see you there!Breakfast and Shooting2014-01-25 09:00:0040
Chris Chabot162,021Hey Londoners!  We have a visitor in town that's itching to shoot London at night, and heck I'm still a rookie here as well so that's all the reason I need to call a photo stroll! It's like a photo walk, just a bit smaller scale. We'll meet up at the Westminster Pier just outside of the Westminster Tube Station at 8pm, take a few bridge / parliament shots and slowly make our way towards Covent Garden enjoying the fun and hectic Friday street photography. We'll probably end the evening with a pint or two in a local pub. Everyone's super welcome, wether you're a seasoned photog, prefer a camera phone, or even just want to go for a walk through London with us - we're friendly folks so there's no reason not to go. Looking forward to seeing you there!Friday Night Photo stroll2013-11-22 20:00:007
Alan Shapiro4,005,148I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. You can watch it online later)Picking a camera bag...what to look for and how to decide what's right for you2013-10-28 01:30:0079
Thomas Hawk7,940,660One of our favorite San Francisco photographers is very shortly to become one of our favorite London photographers.  Yes, Chris Chabot has joined the flock at Twitter and is moving to LONDON! To send Chris off in style, we will be having one last epic Chris Chabot photowalk -- and what better place for a photowalk with Chris than the annual Burning Man Decompression event. If you have never shot Decom before, you are in for a treat.  It's a visual smorgasbord of pure delight. We will meet at the *second* entrance, near the corner of 20th and Minnesota Streets at 2:30 pm sharp.  Bring your Canon or Nikon or iPhone or Android... or better yet, be like Chris and bring a Leica!   Whatever you shoot, come and hang out with some great SF photographers and help send Chris off in style.  All skill levels welcome. It's $15 to enter Decom.  More details on the event here:  http://goo.gl/XkJlgnIt's the Chris Chabot Farewell Decompression Photowalk!!!!2013-10-13 23:30:00128
Eric Raeber1,157,357@102865263115020893218 and @116947906726568301788 are in town with their girls this week-end. Join us for a kids friendly photowalk in Golden Gate park. We'll start at 2pm, from the plaza between the De Young museum and the Academy of Sciences. We will stroll trough the botanical garden and around the lake. Here is the proposed route, which we can shorten, depending on the pace: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/u/0/edit?mid=zuNuBTHSoEX8.kVODzNBrbW3s If your kids are of age (and interest) to hold a pocket camera, bring one along. I think of having a list with a few photo items to treasure hunt for them. Or for you... were you missing the child labor for your photography assignments ;-) Hope to see you there!Photowalk in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco2013-10-06 14:00:0079

Thomas Hawk7,940,660The one and only @111863388502434056486 Guru @103519655975029093996 is coming to town and we are going to celebrate in style.  Join us on Thursday, October 11th for a special dinner / photowalk.   We are going to start the evening off at 5:30pm at Henry Hunan's on Sansome Street in San Francisco (note there are several Henry Hunan's, this is the one on Sansome in North Beach).  We'll enjoy some of San Francisco's best chinese food and then head up to go shoot the tallest building in SF, the Transamerica Building at sunset/dusk.  We'll shoot the building from the Montgomery Street overlook -- one of the best locations to shoot This iconic William Pereira spire from.   Afterwards we'll float around North Beach shooting more of the historic architecture and night life before ending up the night at Specs' Twelve Adler Museum for a few later evening adult beverages.   Specs' is a throwback to old school San Francisco that the SF Weekly describes as "one of the few bars left where you can ask for a martini and get a cold glass of gin and a little vermouth without having to answer a bunch of damn fool questions." Rumor has it the smoothest dude alive @101651096660571767183 will also be joining us from NYC and @105873814765821560444 will be up from Los Angeles.   What a great night for photography this will be.  Come on out for a great G+ Photography evening!A San Francisco Dinner/Photowalk with Gordon Laing2012-10-11 17:30:00136
Doug Kaye64,669I'm still trying to catch this elusive gem. Moonrise is 7:52pm. Sunset is 8:18pm. From Hawk Hill the moon will rise behind the GG bridge and downtown San Francisco. We can't predict the fog. It's always a longshot in August. I'll get there about 7:45 after recording @110414918019803275342, so this will be a leaderless event unless someone (@102691005290181713701?) steps up. If it looks bad from Hawk Hill, we usually try Fort Baker (behind the big rock) just too see what we can get. The Park Service will probably close the gate above the roundabout by 8:30, so it's best to park below the roundabout and walk up as far as you need to get the best shot.Full Moon at the Golden Gate Bridge2012-08-02 04:30:0014

Well it's new phone day for me-- A trick I learned a long time ago is that if apple says the delivery time is 3-4 weeks, it's much faster to buy your phone from a different, less popular store since they'll still have them in stock-- works every time.

I went for the 6+, while it is absolutely huge (see the iPhone 5s next to it for comparison), I'm actually quite excited about that-- I love reading books and watching movies as I fly, and adopted a much more mobile heavy lifestyle than before in my work, doing a lot of email and such on the phone -- With the 6+ I no longer feel like I need a tablet for much of that, which makes it a great tradeoff.

And I've got to give it to Apple, they know how to make your old phone feel very, very old in a single day. Better enjoy the newness of this one while it lasts :)

There's this popular meme going around for a while now, and it got me thinking about if this could work at all.

As a starting point I looked into the estimated # of cell towers In london, which is about 23k cell towers, for a population of 8m people. Say that for WiFi you'd need double the # (after all the signal range is shorter), London would need ~50k theoretical WiFi trees.

After a bit more research I found that on average, a single leafy tree creates enough oxygen per year for 2 human beings / year -- using the estimated 50k WiFi trees, that would create enough oxygen for 100k people, which unfortunately is a tiny, tiny # compared to size of London's population.

So I think forests is still where it's at as far as oxygen production goes .. (and I wish we'd stop cutting those rainforests down)

The view from my apartment gets crazier every year it seems. Today the start of the British Academy Film Awards' red carpet starts right in front of my door.

Does make doing groceries a bit trickier than normal and I can forget about ordering pizza.

Hear my song, Violetta
Hear my song beneath the Moon
Come to me in my gondola
Waiting on the old lagoon

Serenade across the water
Can you hear it soft and low
A tale of love and lovers
Singing long ago

Dancing Man Found

There are days where I fall head over heals in love with the Internet again and again-- This is one of them. In case you haven't been following events as they unfolded, this is roughly what happened:

A pretty heavy set man was dancing and enjoying the music, when a group of mean spirited kids took his picture while staring and laughing at him-- They proceeded to post the before (dancing happily) and after he noticed (totally crushed spirits) photos on 4chan.
A wonderful group of ladies noticed this when it was posted on imgurl, and decided to throw this man a huge dance party -- all 1700+ of them-- because everyone should be able to enjoy dancing without being worried about being shamed for who they are.

They send out their SOS to help identify and contact this man, and after 24 hours they managed to make contact and invite him -- and he... more »

They send out their SOS to help identify and contact this man, and after 24 hours they managed to make contact and invite him -- and he accepted!

Now a huge dance party with hundreds of lovely women and tunes provided by Moby and Pharrell Williams who volunteered their time to help make this the bestest and most memorable party ever for this man, is well under way to happening as soon as he can fly over to LA.
The internet like everyone else has it's good and dark days-- this is definitely one of the very, very good ones!___

Oxford University Museum of Natural History

Speculation has it that the first scholars were roaming around in Oxford as early as 1096. In the many centuries since the deep musings, groundbreaking research and endless streams of rebellious, (presumably, nay hopefully) intelligent young students coming up with new nefarious ways act out have imbued it's very essence.

So it shouldn't be surprising that when my mom came to visit, Oxford had it's own day dedicated to it, and ended up being one of her favorite things of the trip -- especially this wonderful museum.

It's been great to spend Christmas break here in Europe with many old and new friends-- But it's at times like these you miss the friends you aren't with right now the most.

With warm memories and fondly looking forward to the next time we meet, this one's to my friends in California. I hope your season is festive, filled with loved ones and fun and great memories. Happy holidays!

+Kevin F. Adler  a real mensch and a fantastic human being and he's put limitless amounts of time and energy into setting up the HomelessPOV project.

Their goal is to make a real connection with homeless people and truly listen to their stories, and sharing those with the world to help elucidate who this group of people is and dispel the detachment and prejudices this group faces.

There are many big and faceless charities to help out, but it's often grassroots projects like this that end up moving the needle in this increasingly blasé world.

Whenever I'm knee deep in research papers and trend analysis to distill fact from the vapors of nuance, I find myself wishing I was in an old library filled with worn wooden tables, quaint reading lights that were used by generations before me trying to elucidate meaning from an abundance of chaos, and the smell of slowly decaying old books to keep you company.

To placate my wondering mind I went and looked at some of my UC Berkeley library photos.. Ah yes.. this will be my mental backdrop for the evening as I attempt to explicate how how change equals opportunity.

yes, it's one of those kind of days

I love those moments where the future clicks together in your mind.

This week I did a quick trip to Budapest to speak at a conference-- Usually for flights over 2 hours I bring my iPad to watch some movies or read a book on. One of the things I was hoping for buying the iPhone 6+ was to no longer need that iPad for that. What I didn't expect was how game changing and smooth the experience would be.

The individual components of the experience aren't really groundbreaking or new. I bought a ticket using the British Airlines mobile app, saved the ticket to passbook which meant no more fuzzing around on a laptop, and no more printing or checking-in at the airport saving - that already saves a bunch of time. Going through security they scanned the QR code on the phone .. Waiting for the flight to board I caught up on some email and read some news on the phone while listening to some... more »

Going through security they scanned the QR code on the phone .. Waiting for the flight to board I caught up on some email and read some news on the phone while listening to some Ella Fitzgerald .. In the flight I watched Expendables 3 on the phone.

Reading that it all sounds so straight forward-- but the fact that each and every step of the way I was using one device that was always there in my coat pocket without having to think what was where-- Never having to mail or print a ticket somewhere else-- Never having to switch to a different device that worked slightly differently-- Not even having to plug my headphones into something else. It was all so integrated, so smooth and so natural feeling that it made lights go off in my brain.

Yeah .. the phone as the hub for tickets, payments, entertainment, and soon to control your home as well -- it makes sense. And the experience from the sum of the parts, it's so much bigger than the individual components ever would've made me guess.___

Window to the soul

Black and White images are an incredibly powerful tool when wild colors would distract from the story you want to tell. If powerful lines and contrasts are your story, B&W allows the viewer to experience those without distraction, or if you want to share an expression of emotion on someone's face, colors would only subtract from the full impact.

So for Day Five of my #‎fivedayblackandwhitephotoschallenge‬ I'm sharing one of the many intriguing and wonderful characters I've met while engaging and photographing people-- A Blues musician who lights up the streets with his soulful tones and song. Photography can take you so many places you never would've explored otherwise.

Embracing the classics

There are these days where a muse will delicately land on your shoulder and whisper things like 'A bit of a Rembrandt tone would look pretty good in that portrait you shot last year'.

I'm speaking at an Ignyte event my good friends from DeSpark are running to talk about Innovation and how that applies to your business this Thursday.

Next to me there's Arif Haq from Contagious Communications, and Adel Zakout, DeSpark's co-founder.

Fantastic topic, lots of great content-- come check it out if you're in London!
