I’m very proud today to announce that the design team from 17 Feet is joining Google!

More and more people lately have been taking note that we’re really serious about design at Google. Our approach is reflected in new designs for the Stream and Google+ Hangouts, and it means being just as serious about bringing in talented designers.

17 Feet has been doing wonderful work for Google+ for a while now, on everything from the Stream to Photos to our mobile apps. We appreciate their design sensibilities and culture and see this as the continuation of a great relationship.

This transaction builds on last year’s successful onboarding of the design firm Cuban Council, which, since joining, has been a fantastic partner in helping us build the future of Google+.

Valley of Tears, Iceland

Here is an image from one of the most fantastic areas that we visited on Iceland. I call this place Valley of Tears because these waterfalls were created when man disturbed nature. The color of the water is stunning blue-green and there must be 10s of waterfalls in the valley.

How was this photograph created?
This location was challenging to compose. One had to resist the urge to capture the grand vistas and trying to capture every single waterfall in a single photograph. I used along lens to focus in the areas that I felt would give a pleasing composition and highlight the colors in the water. I used circular polarizer to cut through the glare on the surface of the water to bring out the details and colors in the water.

*Getting started with #AutoEnhance  and #AutoAwesome *

Many of you have been asking, "How do I apply Auto Enhance and Auto Awesome to my photos?" The good news is, all you have to do is upload some new pictures, and we'll do both automatically: 

- To review Google's automatic enhancements, just open a newly-uploaded photo in the desktop lightbox
- Click the new "Enhanced" button to toggle between your original, and Google's enhancements
- If you like the changes, keep them. Otherwise, just uncheck "Auto Enhance" from the More menu
- You can also turn off the feature completely in settings: google.com/settings/plus

It's the same story with Auto Awesome. Just upload some new pics, and we'll get to work:

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.

While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.

Provocative stuff from +Matt Gemmell on product design thinking:

We forget that physical objects are also just specific embodiments – or presentations – of their content and function. A paperback book and an ebook file are two embodiments of the text they each contain; the ebook isn’t descended from the paperback. They’re siblings, from different media spheres, one of which happens to have been invented more recently.

The biggest intellectual stumbling-block we’re facing is the fallacy that just because physical embodiments came first, they’re also somehow canonical. The publishing industry is choking itself to death with that assumption, despite readily available examples of innovative, digitally-native approaches.

Good advice from +Esther Gokhale on how to improve your seated, working posture, found in +The New York Times: 

"Tilt the top of [your] pelvis forward, roll [your] shoulders back, elongate [your] spine and straighten [your] craned neck."

...

"With the care of a kindergarten teacher, Ms. Gokhale adjusts clients’ bodies from bottom to top.
