Drink And Click™ SF520Wow, you know you are having an awesome month of special guests when you need not one, but TWO Drink and Clicks to fit them all in! I have just received word that +Elia Locardi and his wife  +Naomi Locardi  from http://www.blamethemonkey.com/, AND +Brian Matiash  will BOTH be in town this week! Now this is a trifecta of awesomeness! So to celebrate, we will be taking them out in one of the most fun and diverse sections of San Francisco...North Beach! Chinatown, Portsmouth Square Plaza, Washington Square, St. Peter's and Pauls Church....the shooting possibilities are endless. It also doesn't hurt that this neighborhood has plenty of great bars and cafes to socialize in. I will work on a updated itinerary this weekend. But this much I know. We are meeting at Vesuvio Cafe at  255 Columbus at 5:00PM. PLEASE BRING CASH IF YOU ARE GOING TO ORDER A DRINK! We will be there until a little after 6:15, when we will take off and walk the streets to get the great light. Afterwards, who knows...more drinking and of course more clicking! So come on SF Bay Area Photogs. Let's welcome +Brian Matiash +Elia Locardi and +Naomi Locardi to SF! (BTW, this is the FIRST time the Locardis have been to SF, so let's get a great big turnout and show them how we do it.)Thanks +Chris Chabot for the awesome cover photo! Event Organized By +Robyn Chau +Tony Eckersley and +Michael Bonocore  #DrinkAndClickSF   #Photography  Drink And Click SF - Blame The Monkey And #BMash Edition2013-03-27 17:00:0068
Drink And Click™ SF520Hey Drinkers and Clickers! This month's chapter-wide Drink and Click challenge is "Strangers in a Bar" (be sure to RSVP here: https://plus.google.com/events/c9drj349qqhfeojj295k101amos?gl=us&hl=en), so to make sure the SF chapter has the opportunity to go up against literally the rest of the world, we're on a mission to the bars of the Mission! Most of the photography will be indoors, in the style of the month's challenge. Maybe +Chris Chabot will bring his sweet lighting setup again! Those who were looking forward to shooting some sweet cityscape views at Potrero Hill, don't worry, +Drink And Click™ SF will head there in March. The bars we're hitting Thursday each have a quirky, individual feel to them, and all have musical character, so get ready to get down, get funky, and get your groove on! Or at least take photos of other people who are! Most of the live music starts a little later, so depending on how late you stay out you may catch a performance or two.Approximate Schedule:6:30: we'll set the mood at the Elbo Room (647 Valencia St)7:30: we'll migrate south to Amnesia Bar (853 Valencia St)8:30: we'll close the night at Benders Bar (806 South Van Ness Ave) Check this event page for updates on where we are! Or message +Robyn Chau, +Tony Eckersley, or +Michael Bonocore directly to meet up with us along the way. This is a Thursday, so since most of us have to be up early on Friday, it'll be a little lower key than January's [awesome] event. All the same, we can still get a couple of hours of good clean fun in before everyone retires to their weeknight routines. :)Hope to see you there!!Note: Many D&C regulars do not imbibe, so don't feel you have to in order to participate. The only requirement to be part of this group and these events is a love of photography, whatever your skill level and beverage preference :) Drink and Click SF February Event!2013-02-21 18:30:0047

Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117
Ryan Lynham11,576Still having trouble finding G+ to be an active photography community? This is a list of the major players in my photography circles. Add this puppy and I think you'll solve your problem. In fact you might be overwhelmed and wish you had only added a few from it, which is another good idea, depending on your sitch, and what not.The standard circle share spiel: If you want to be in this circle and you aren't, then start sharing good photography and participating. Interaction on my posts / posts of people I follow helps, too. Easy peasy. Please don't ask me to add you. Thanks!Cc-ing +Darren LoPrinzi, who was looking for some good folks to follow. : )2012-07-30 18:23:5920234010
Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307

Rob Davy-Cripwell18Was having a bit of a tidy up of my circles, trying to make sure I have the best of the best for my viewing pleasure! I spent ages sifting through everyone I had circled in under design and thought it would be rude of me not share the kind of things I'm privy to when I switch this circle on in my stream. Here is a selection of product designers, digital designers and graphic designers, so enjoy and be inspired! Michelle Hedstrom10,108Figured I'd share this circle. It's mostly made up of the big name photographers in the Kelby World or in general, photogs I've met at PSW, other photographers I really really want to keep track of, and there's a few designers in there, just because I wanted them all in the same circle. :)Michelle Hedstrom shared a circle with you.2011-09-30 19:41:2372908

Well, that sneaky little Santa delivered the goods to the Jemison's household. One gift at a time. I left him a note next to the cookies to simply have his elf press the shutter after each present is placed under the tree. As you can see, the Elf did a great job. Thanks +Google+ for the #autoawesome  animation. Merry Christmas to all of you out there on G+.

My first lingerie shoot... okay,  maybe not my first (wink, wink). Thanks to +Jason Laurea I was fortunate enough to hang out in this beautiful home directly across from the Palace of Fine Arts and shoot two wonderful models for Rock & Rose shape wear (coming this Spring).
Eileen, pictured here, was amazing! She was professional, knew how to pose, knew how to work her angles, eyes, hair, everything. Jason and I were lucky she was there to make our jobs so much easier. The day flew by and we came away with some great shots for our client. More to come...

Sitting here listening to the rain, editing photos. What do y'all think about this one from Byron Hot Springs Hotel? Right before I left, I walked around the back  of the hotel and the sun had finally burnt through the fog to the east. I spent another 30 minutes shooting into the sun to get some high contrast and some yummy lens flare.

The shot on the wall is Eden at 7 months. Malachi is starting to take on his own look. I have at least one shot a month picked out to replicate for his first year of life... This one turned out perfect when he grabbed the rail and gave me his best 'sister pose'.

The 95th Livermore Rodeo
I was fortunate enough to shoot from the sidelines (aka, the dirt) thanks to my friend +Jason Laurea. I shot with a 600 mm and was able to capture a lot of tight, intimate moments between the cowboys and the moo-moos. Here's one of those tight shots, (no cropping needed) from the team roping event.

It's fun to go back to the neighborhood you grew up in as a child (okay, it may not be fun for all of us). Charity spent many years running around barefoot in San Bruno. The house she grew up in is behind her, to the right. She remembers this street was her whole world back in the day, and now it all seems so, small. It's amazing how growing up and exploring can make your little corner of the world feel so small. Some people never get to leave the city or small town they were born in, so I feel very blessed to have parents that brought me out of the "hood" to see what the rest of the country had to offer. But, I must admit, living in California is pretty nice.

This was shot about a year ago out at Isla Mujeres, just off the coast of Cancun. I left my $600 tripod out there on the back of the golf cart we rented the previous day. Knowing the chances of it being recovered were pretty slim, I said a quick prayer and headed out to see if I could retrieve my baby. I figured the worst that could happen... already happened, so why not head back out to the island and see if I could at least walk around and get my "Jay Maisel" on for a morning. I arrived at the rental spot and asked the lady, who didn't speak much english, if she had seen a tripod. She said she was going to get her brother, out back. So I waited for him to return, and sure enough, he came around the corner with my carbon fiber first born. I was so happy I thought I'd celebrate and have a damn beer with my breakfast, (shot to come) and it was oh-so-good. I walked around the island by myself for most of the morning and took a few hundred photos. I found this guy hanging out by the ocean, just staring into the distance and wondered what was on his mind. So many people on this island living in 3rd world conditions, yet this is their view, turquoise waters and white sand. ___

Great new site by +Amy Heiden, showcasing lots of beautiful #UrbEx photography. Take some time and check it out.

The New amyheiden.com!

Today, is an exciting day for me because I finally launched my new site - http://www.amyheiden.com

I've spent hundreds of hours selecting images, many of which are previously unpublished, compiling history, writing descriptions and integrating a 'purchase' option for prints via +SmugMug. It has been an incredibly time consuming process, but I'm thrilled it's finished.

Take a look around and enjoy!

Cancun, Mexico. What do I miss about Mexico the most? Walking outside at any time of night, only to feel the warm humid air on my skin. We spent a lot of time laying out at the beach at night. No sun. No people. Just the sound of the ocean, and the warm mist from the sea.

So here's a little look back at one year ago today. Do you remember? Were you there? It was the Google+ Photographers Conference in San Francisco. I knew I had to go to this "once in a lifetime" event when it was announced right here in the bay. Unfortunately I've heard, from several "off the record" talks I've had with people familiar with the matter, this will never happen again. At least, not Google and Kelby together. I did have a great time, though. This was the second day of the conference and I met so many new photographer buddies during the conference. Hey, any reason to hang out in S.F. and shoot photos is a good one, so hopefully Google will do something like this again in the future, huh +Brian Matiash ?? :)

Hello G+. I think it's a great day to resurrect my social life here on G+ with all the new additions/features announced at Google I/O today. So let me jump right in...

Here's two of the three reasons I haven't been around here as much as I used to, Eden and +Charity Jemison. I put them, and my son, first on the priority list every day. When people say they [kids] grow up fast, they aren't joking. Eden is already 2 1/2 years old and my son Malachi is approaching 4 months. I feels like we just brought him home last week.

So in this absence I've been shooting just as much as I did before Eden and Malachi came into my life, I just haven't been sharing any of the photos...What's the point of that? (insert "Ain't nobody got time for that" quote here) One thing I miss about taking time to post a picture everyday is the accountability. Even if it is... more »

Well thank you Google and NIK! I just found $400 in my pocket. Cha-ching!

The Nik Collection by Google: photography first, for professionals and more

Here on the Google+ Photos team, we're busy building tools for all kinds of photographers. Today, and for all the professionals out there, we're bundling the complete set of Nik plug-ins as the Nik Collection by Google. We're especially excited about three things:

1) It's more affordable. The entire set of plug-ins for Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture only costs $149 (versus the previous $499).

2) It's really powerful. The Nik Collection by Google gives you tools for everything from noise reduction and HDR imaging to creative effects and image sharpening (and lots more).

3) It's free to try. You can visit niksoftware.com for a 15-day free trial of the Collection.

If you've already purchased one or more Nik plug-ins in the past, then don't worry, we've got you covered. In fact: we're going to upgrade you to the entire Nik Collection by Google for free. Just keep an eye out for emailed instructions in the next few days.

Once you've got a Nik Collection shot that you're excited about, feel free to share it with the Google+ community. Simply tag your public pictures with  #nikcollection , and we'll reshare some favorites from the +Google+ page. We can't wait to see what you'll create!

Eden in the Orchard
I headed east yesterday to find some flowering almond trees to shoot in. We got out of the house later than I had planned, but I still was able to shoot for 20 minutes before the sun went down. This is my favorite shot of my daughter Eden hanging out in the orchard with her Easter bunny.

Geek details: Fired a speedlite through an umbrella, camera left, ETTL +1 and a slow shutter speed to help light the orchard.

I watch this and just think how my 2 year old daughter and 3 week old son will never know what it's like not to have the internet, not to have computers in their pockets. I started coding at a very basic level in junior high, and then was re-introduced to it in college via Flash. I wanted to make something great and interactive, but needed to learn how to code (HTML and ActionScript) to bring my vision to life. Although Flash is all but dead, I continued to learn HTML and CSS and had so much fun solving layout problems (during the IE6 years) and it has stuck with me. I can't wait to teach this to my kids.

Can you imagine the "ah ha!!" moment the engineer had when he thought of this. Brilliant.

The Magdeburg Water Bridge : 918 m long, 34 m wide and 4.25 m

At first glance, the Water Bridge in Magdeburg, Germany, seems nothing special; just another canal bridge. But look again and it’s a water bridge across water, forming a water intersection that is the biggest water crossing in Europe!

The world’s largest water bridge, with a span of 106 m between its pillars, opened in October 2003, on the back of five years of construction, 24,000 tons of steel, and 68,000 m³ of reinforced concrete. Regaining the construction cost of €500 million probably won’t take long as the bridge shortens travel times for ships considerably and eases traffic on other routes.

Before the opening of the water bridge, ships moving between the Midland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal had to make a 12-km detour through the Rothensee lock, along the River Elbe and back up Niegripp lock. Now the bridge connects Hannover and Berlin directly and also Berlin’s inland harbour network with the ports along the Rhine. A double lock was constructed to descend to the Elbe-Havel Canal and a single Rothensee lock was constructed at the other end of the water bridge to descend to the Elbe and the Magdeburg harbour, making it independent of water levels and therefore navigable even for large ships.___Can you imagine the "ah ha!!" moment the engineer had when he thought of this. China Town Photo Walk
I was able to drop in on a hangout today with +RC Concepcion. I shared a handful of photos from the photo walk he led during the #GPlusPC  event. RC hadn't seen some of them so I collected a few of my favorites into this album.

*Side note
I probably have posted a handful of these previously, but can't figure out how to move or copy them to a new album while keeping the comments alive. I thought this was possible in Picasa, but +Google+ moved that from the black bar, and I'm not sure if the functionality is in Google+. Anyone know how to do this?

I thought this was possible in Picasa, but +Google+ moved that from the black bar, and I'm not sure if the functionality is in Google+. Anyone know how to do this?

Photographers, make sure you get out from behind the camera
Just a quick reminder. To all my photographer friends, make sure you hand your camera to a loved one every once and a while. This image was taken last weekend by my wife, Charity. My daughter Eden, and I were enjoying some ice cream at the Alameda County Fair. I want to make sure Eden can look back at the thousands of images I've taken and occasionally see some of the great moments we shared. So make sure you hand your camera (in Professional mode, of course) to a loved one to capture these moments with your loved ones.

*Re-editing*
As if I don't have enough photos to process, I took the time to re-edit this today. Someone hit me up on Flickr asking if I'd be interested in selling it for the cover of the local Yellow Pages. So, I though if I was going to put it in the running, I might as well freshen it up a little. I mean, it's almost four years old, and to think, I'm still shooting with the same Canon 40D. too.

Here's the original edit back in 2008
