Reinventors Network821,241Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?" Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00191

Nikon Shooters4,304Nikon Shooters Circle 2We only share one circle at a time, since you can only add 500 people per day to your circles. Once we've shared them all, we start the rotation again at Circle 1. The Nikon Shooters Circles and Page continues to grow. We now have over 4,000 members! There are currently 10 Nikon Shooter circles. There's a 500 person for adding people to your circles each day, so we've limited the circles to 450 each so they're easy to share and to add to your circles. To be included one of the Nikon Shooter circles, you must first add the Nikon Shooters page to your circles. (That's a G+ rule for pages, a page cannot add you to their circles unless they're already in your circles.) Once you do that, you'll be added to our circles on our next update. The page can be found here: https://plus.google.com/b/114191697554873400049/114191697554873400049Once you circle that page, you'll be added to the Nikon Shooter circles during our next update. #Nikon, #Photography , #Camera2012-04-02 19:29:13449006

That more than anything else frees you up from wage slavery. Yes, you'll have to buy the battery packs but they're extremely affordable.

More Details Emerge About Google Wireless Service

We still don't know exactly when Google will launch their upcoming wireless service, but we may know a bit more about how it will work.

Apparently codenamed Project Fi internally, it will involve paying for service by the gigabyte, with a credit back if you don't use all your data and no overage fees if you exceed it.

More interestingly, it may be possible to use an app to change your primary device by moving your phone number to a different phone without swapping SIM cards.

The new service may also offer more privacy than other mobile networks with an easy opt-out option for data collection.  If you thought Google's data collection efforts were aggressive, you probably never read the fine print from your mobile carrier.

This project has the potential to grow into a large coordinated development effort to build and customize a full-featured community knowledge graph and sense-making environment for this domain. Right now, we're exploring what's technically possible and practically manageable in terms of a feature set and experience design. Got ideas? Input, feedback, suggestions, references all welcome!

We'll follow up with more news and notes here as plans and progress are made. For now, I hope this inspires additional exploratory mapping along these lines! You'll find a bunch of related content already on the metamaps platform. Try searching "REL" to begin. Please create and contribute thoughtfully :)___

"Shopping is a complex process, neurologically speaking. In 2007 a team of researchers from Stanford, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon looked at the brains of test subjects using fMRI technology as they made decisions while out buying clothes. Space Station Flies Over Super Typhoon Maysak: Typhoon Maysak strengthened into a super typhoon on March 31, reaching Category 5 hurricane status on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale. NASA Astronaut Terry Virts captured this image while flying over the weather system on board the International Space Station. Commenting on the storm, Virts wrote, "The eye of #Maysak typhoon really stands out early in the morning with the shadow being cast deep into the vortex." His ESA crewmate on station also viewed the storm and wrote, "Commands respect even from #space: we just flew over typhoon #Maysak."

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellites captured rainfall and cloud data that revealed heavy rainfall and high thunderstorms in the strengthening storm. Details: http://go.nasa.gov/1C8jqCa #EarthRightNow

Robin Williams isn't coming back from the dead.

Eriq Gardner at The Hollywood Reporter speculates that Williams might have been aware of digital technology that would permit him to be effectively resurrected for future entertainments. But it seems more likely he did it as a tax dodge.

Rose of Venus

The image below shows the orbital path of Venus.  If it looks a little odd, that’s because it doesn’t show the path of Venus relative to the Sun, but rather relative to Earth.  It is taken from a 1799 book by James Fergeson entitled “Astronomy Explained Upon Sir Isaac Newton’s Principles”.  This was an astronomer’s handbook, so it gave the motion of Venus and other planets as we see them on Earth.

You might notice that the path of Venus seems to follow a kind of five-fold spirograph path.  This is because Venus orbits the sun once every 224.7 days, while the Earth 365.25 days.  The ratio of these two periods is 0.615, or about 8 to 13.  Since the difference between 8 and 13 is 5, the path of Venus has a five-fold symmetry relative to Earth.  This pattern is sometimes called the Rose of Venus.

Ratios such as the 8 to 13 ratio between Earth and Venus are relatively common.    They happen through a process of orbital resonance, where the small gravitational interactions between planets reinforce their stable orbits.  For planets, these ratios are only approximate, but they are stronger for smaller bodies.  For example, three of the moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa and Ganymede) have orbital ratios of 1 to 2 to 4.  In asteroids there is a related effect where certain resonances between Jupiter and the asteroids are orbitally unstable.  This means any asteroid that happens to have such a resonance is pushed a bit either closer or further from the Sun.  The result is a series of gaps in the asteroid belt known as Kirkwood gaps.

When you look at patterns such as this, you can see how difficult it was to accurately describe the motions of the planets.  Imagine starting with a pattern like this and proving the planets are actually moving around the Sun.  Often what seems obvious now is hard to figure out at first.

For those who like April Fools, I actually lied about the title of Fergeson’s book.  The title was actually “Astronomy explained upon Sir Isaac Newton’s Principles, and made easy to those who have not studied Mathematics. To which are added, a Plain Method of finding the Distances of all the Planets from the Sun, by the Transit of Venus over the Sun’s Disc, in the Year 1761. An Account of Mr. Horrox’s Observation of the Transit of Venus in the Year 1639: and, of the Distances of all the Planets from the Sun, as deduced from Observations of the Transit in the Year 1761”

Entanglement-Based Machine Learning on a Photonic Quantum Computer in principle and if scaled would show exponential speed up

For the first time, physicists have performed machine learning on a photonic quantum computer, demonstrating that quantum computers may be able to exponentially speed up the rate at which certain machine learning tasks are performed—in some cases, reducing the time from hundreds of thousands of years to mere seconds. The new method takes advantage of quantum entanglement, in which two or more objects are so strongly related that paradoxical effects often arise since a measurement on one object instantaneously affects the other. Here, quantum entanglement provides a very fast way to classify vectors into one of two categories, a task that is at the core of machine learning.

John Coltrane, December 1964
On December 9, 1964, John Coltrane led a quartet that featured pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Jimmy Garrison into Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, where countless jazz recording sessions were held in the 1950s and ’60s.

That day nearly 50 years ago the band recorded a Coltrane composition titled A Love Supreme, a profound expression of his spiritual awakening divided into four movements—“Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance,” “Psalm.” For its soaring ambition, flawless execution and raw power, it was hailed as a ground breaking piece of music when it was released in February 1965 and is now considered one of the most important recordings of the 20th century

Love Sensemaking, thx for the post.

21C Design: Sensemaker Toolkit

Through a lens of deliverables, strategic outcome:

transforming practice

Eg, a team, a business, an organisation, is at point A and would benefit from wayfinding paths that would help them move to B.

One of the many benefits would include rendering visible, what is often kept tacit and referred to as "culture".
