Reinventors Network782,743Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?"Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00196G+

Nikon Shooters4,304Nikon Shooters Circle 2We only share one circle at a time, since you can only add 500 people per day to your circles. Once we've shared them all, we start the rotation again at Circle 1. The Nikon Shooters Circles and Page continues to grow. We now have over 4,000 members! There are currently 10 Nikon Shooter circles. There's a 500 person for adding people to your circles each day, so we've limited the circles to 450 each so they're easy to share and to add to your circles. To be included one of the Nikon Shooter circles, you must first add the Nikon Shooters page to your circles. (That's a G+ rule for pages, a page cannot add you to their circles unless they're already in your circles.) Once you do that, you'll be added to our circles on our next update. The page can be found here: https://plus.google.com/b/114191697554873400049/114191697554873400049Once you circle that page, you'll be added to the Nikon Shooter circles during our next update. #Nikon, #Photography , #Camera2012-04-02 19:29:13449006CC G+

If A Computer Can Diagnose Cancer, Will Doctors Become Obsolete?

The “computational pathologist,” a computer software program known as the C-Path, can examine thousands of tissue scans at lightning speed to diagnose patients with breast cancer and even predict their survival rates. Some believe the C-Path, which is built on digital imagery, is as good as or even better than a human doctor.

Dahlias and Sweet Peas
...and a ticket for Gus Stickland.
It's sweet pea and dahlia central at the allotment right now, a riot of colour and scent. Some great new varieties (from eBay plugs) and after our mild winter some really big clumps of last year's favourites.
What's supposed to be our dining table is just one huge dahlia show!

Scenius, Group Flow & Group Genius Tea House Sequence:
Gather, Diverge, Unfold, Converge, Prototype

Gather: Participants, Expertise, Meaningful attraction (to the Ba)
Diverge: Personal passion, Unique talents, Problem space augmentation

Converge: Flow, Alignment, Knowledge annealing

Co-intelligence
”Healthy communities, institutions and societies -- perhaps even our collective survival -- depend on our ability to organize our collective affairs more wisely, in tune with each other and nature.
This ability to wisely organize our lives together -- all of us being wiser together than any of us could be alone -- we call co-intelligence.”

Scenius
”Scenius stands for the intelligence and the intuition of a whole cultural scene. It is the communal form of the concept of the genius.”
-- Brian Eno   http://goo.gl/PZxjoa

What conditions favour the emergence of scenius?
Generative question from +Seb Paquet  on Collective Intelligence, Quora:     http://goo.gl/7gTKNc

In his blog post on scenius, http://goo.gl/h2oyAJ  +Kevin Kelly  cites the following attributes of the geography of scenius:

- Mutual appreciation -- Risky moves are applauded by the group, subtlety is appreciated, and friendly competition goads the shy. Scenius can be thought of as the best of peer pressure.
- Rapid exchange of tools and techniques -- As soon as something is invented, it is flaunted and then shared. Ideas flow quickly because they are flowing inside a common language and sensibility.
- Network effects of success -- When a record is broken, a hit happens, or breakthrough erupts, the success is claimed by the entire scene. This empowers the scene to further success.
- Local tolerance for the novelties -- The local "outside" does not push back too hard against the transgressions of the scene. The renegades and mavericks are protected by this buffer zone.
- Flexibility -- giving participants the freedom to be creative.
- Barriers to entry -- this filters out many wannabes.
- Barriers to exit -- keeps people around, so there are more prolonged contacts and people get to know one another.
- Nondescriptness --  from the outside you would never guess there was anything special about the place.
- Some flash of excitement to kick off the virtuous circle.

Social Architecture & Third Neighborhoods
The importance of social tools and settings for both startups and well established large organizations.

“We are seeing a rethinking of work, collaboration, and the role of management in a changing world, where the principles and tools of the web are transforming society, media, and business.”
-- +Stowe Boyd    http://goo.gl/HNHppX

Epicenters    http://goo.gl/fuIu1o
”Alex Steffen,. In his blog, Steffen suggests that the “art of courting genius” is an essential capability of those attempting to innovate and develop solutions to big problems. He points out that genius does not arrive on cue, but instead in “unruly clumps, in great non-linear spurts of changed thinking.” Without the right places and spaces, you’ll miss what you had hoped to achieve. Instead, you must “create a welcoming place for [genius] and increase the likelihood that it will show up.” Steffen uses the term “epicenters” to embrace the concept of scenius, places with the right ingredients to “set the conditions for a planetary explosion of new thinking.”

”Wholeness (and life) emerges as a result of naturally occurring processes which are based on locii known as centers.”
-- James O. Coplien    http://goo.gl/i7e1qP

Envisioning the Future
”You begin by talking to people-people in big business, people in small business, people who started businesses and people whose businesses failed. They tell you all sorts of stories and give you enough conflicting advice that you think you would have been better off locking yourself in a room to come up with ideas. You stop for a moment, though, and think back to all of the interactions you have just had. What could you learn from that?”
- James B. Smethurst    http://goo.gl/gU4xta

Collective Intelligence

”When the sum of all personal intelligences is greater than the sum of its part, because the field has become intelligent.”
-- +Michel Bauwens

”Collective intelligence and human development are interdependent and the basis of cultural evolution.”
-- +Pierre Lévy

”Collective intelligence emerges from our efforts to negotiate personal truths against inconvenient facts:”
-- +Jerry Michalski

”Collective intelligence is the the emergent quality if individual potential unfolds in deep reciprocal relation to others.”
-- Jascha Rohr

”Collective intelligence is this extraordinary property of social living that emerges when beings collaborates.”
-- +Jean-François Noubel

Scenius: Ensō   +Joachim Stroh  :
Here's my Ensō in response to +John Kellden's piece on collective intelligence  http://goo.gl/G3W9Cm
(part of his Collaborative Sensemaking series) - ”The real collective intelligence cannot be named.”

The Ensō (a Japanese word meaning "circle" and a concept associated with Zen) starts with you picking up knowledge artifacts along the way to increase your own knowledge which improves your capability to better comprehend, to sharpen your skills, to make more sense and to become more productive. The first leg in this circle is your personal learning journey.

But at some point you come to realize that you are not alone on this journey. You connect to peers and like-minded individuals to share your  experience through your stories and to gain new and more diverse perspectives from others on the journey. There's an increase in our knowledge flows and our capability to work and solve problems together (vs. in isolation), be it in groups, communities or entire organizations.

The final leg of the journey is to manifest the newly gained knowledge in knowledge stocks which enable us to put our knowledge to use in new situations. These cases act as repositories and views into new knowledge for individuals so that the circles begins anew. Notice that there's an opening in the circle to allow for disruption and to let new ideas into the circle so that the individual can become part of something even greater.

You undoubtedly will have noticed that knowledge is always connected to something else, to artifacts, to flows, or to stocks, it doesn't really exist in itself.

Disciple: What is knowledge?
Master: Knowledge does not exist. There is no giving and nothing to be received.
Disciple: Then, how can I improve myself?
Master: There is learning, there is connecting, and this is put to use. *
Disciple: But you said knowledge does not exist!
Master: Then, tell me, why did you ask?

#onthisday , according to the Julian calendar, St John’s Eve is celebrated as Ivan Kupala Night in Eastern Europe.

“Do you see, before you stand three hillocks? There are a great many sorts of flowers upon them. But may some power keep you from plucking even one of them. But as soon as the fern blossoms, seize it, and look not round, no matter what may seem to be going on behind thee." (Nikolai Gogol)

Kupala might or might not have been known to the pre-Christian Slavic tribes of old. Kupala might or might not have been known to the pre-Christian Slavic tribes of old. In fact, the deity, revered as a sun and harvest god, might be a 19th century invention of Neo-Pagans, even though there are etymologic claims of “Kupolo” or “Kupala” having the same Indo-European roots as “Cupid”, denominating “passion” and “desire”. Jacob Grimm as well as Sir James Frazer record at least a being named “Kupolo” and his or her significance for Eastern European Midsummer festivals and celebrations held on St John’s Eve. Frazer writes in his “Golden Bough”: “On the Eve of St. John (Midsummer Eve) a figure of Kupalo is made of straw and “is dressed in woman’s clothes, with a necklace and a floral crown. Then a tree is felled, and, after being decked with ribbons, is set up on some chosen spot. Near this tree, to which they give the name of Marena [Winter or Death], the straw figure is placed, together with a table, on which stand spirits and viands. Afterwards a bonfire is lit, and the young men and maidens jump over it in couples, carrying the figure with them. On the next day they strip the tree and the figure of their ornaments, and throw them both into a stream.”

Whatever the name of the specific deity was that the Pre-Christian people revered, Midsummer Eve was celebrated pretty much the same way in Eastern Europe as in the west, blurring with the customs of Beltaine. Bonfires and pouring of water for ritual cleansing were easily adapted into the new belief system, when the old god became Ivan Kupala, John the Bather or John the Baptist. As a test for bravery and faith, young people would jump hand in hand over St John’s fires, girls were floating their flower wreaths lit with candles in the river, trying to divine their future from the course the wreaths took in the water and young men capturing the flowers to get the girls’ attention more or less along the lines Frazer described together with other regional specialities, such as making St John’s Eve a mischief night, with performing pranks, allegedly getting the attention of authorities to this day.

Nevertheless, bad things go bump in St John’s night as well and the fires are lit to keep them at bay. Kupala night is one of the traditional dates for the Witches’ Sabbath. Modest Mussorgsky perpetuated the stories in his musical picture “St. John's Eve on Bald Mountain”. And there is the wondrous tale of the fern blooming on St John’s Eve and people who would find a fern flower would get riches, knowledge and general good luck, not necessarily in that order though, and many got out in the woods to find the blossoms, belying botany, since ferns usually reproduce via spores – but who knows what is possible or not on St John’s Eve, as poor Petro learns, much to his and everyone’s dismay, when he sets out during that night to find a fern flower and win the hand of his beloved Pitorka in Gogol’s short story “St John’s Eve”

Depicted below is Alphonse Mucha’s imagination of a “Celebration of Svantovit” (1912), the second painting of his “Slavic Epic”, taking place on the Baltic island of Rügen and the pre-Christian early medieval pilgrimage site of Arkona.

New Archaeopteryx fossil complicates plumage evolution

Those darn Archaeopteryxes! They've caused nothing but trouble ever since we found the first one. Now we've found eleven of them. But the last one is the worst troublemaker yet. It seems this particular dino-bird had feathers all over its body. The sheer impudence of some fossils, right? Anyway, this fully feathered fossil is fundamentally fouling up feather-for-flight evolution (say that three times fast). Apparently, feathers were for other things first and only later became repurposed for flight. So now we have to rewrite all the books, again. Like I said, Archaeopteryxes have been nothing but trouble from the very beginning. Dang dino-birds!
