Paul Snedden7,059Advance Australia Share - The CircleWOW! What an absolutely overwhelming response I received to my request for your favourite Australians (http://goo.gl/mFLe1). You certainly did deliver. The circle contains a bunch of people who I was already following, but a wealth of freshly undiscovered goodness for me as well. In total, 436 Awesome Aussies waiting to fill your stream with all sorts of goodness. It's got photogs, geeks, writers, a kiwi (ANZACs all the way), expat Aussies living abroad and a couple of long-term Aussie residents who won't admit to being Australian :)I'd like to make special mention to the following people for making this circle possible. The Resharers+Mz Maau  +Giuseppe Basile +Starway Paul +JPG Photo Gallery  +Daryl Hunt +Jim Munro +Brad Chasenore +Annie Yim +Rose T +Rob E +James Fridley +Gerardine Rudolphy +Christopher Prins +Charles Strebor +Peter Lake and +Australia Great The Contributors+2012-12-31 22:36:03436692946CC G+
Moe „Gilvan Blight“ Tousignant3,217#RPG   #RPGcircle   #Circleshare    A week or so ago I was asked to share my G+ RPG circle. This is me continuing to do so.As I have found so many awesome gamers on G+ and you can only share 500 at a time I've broken my RPG gamers down into smaller circles sorted by "First Name" or whatever counts as that as far as google is concerned. This particular circle is my M-N circle. Now this contains people that in some way or another have indicated to me they are into pen and Paper RPGs.  It includes designers, writers, podcasters, artists, world builders, publisher, games masters, players, fans and fanatics. If you do circle any of these fine folks it would be nice if you took some time to introduce yourself. You can do that by putting all the new people in their own circle, called say NEW PEOPLE and sending a message out to that circle. Once done you can sort them into whatever niche they belong in.2012-10-19 19:20:39418014CC G+

Mitchel Rodwell0+Duncan Hayes , +Hanii Leigh this is my biggest circle, #Intellectual. I'd advise you follow either this or #Political, depending on which appeals to you more. As you can see, I follow a lot of very serious people, which is the sort of stuff I post as well. There's way more than what I've shared with you on +Google+ . There's +Handmade , there's +Android , there's +Funny Pictures & Videos . It's not just about serious stuff, even though that's what I mostly use it for.Anyway, happy G+ing! Make circles, post things, fill out your profiles, and if you see something really cool, share it! I don't have a good #Music circle, or a good #Photography circle, so one day you guys might share circles with me that I'd like :)P.s. Some useful tips. Google+ has #hashtag support, so when you put a "#" before a term it makes it a clickable link to see other times someone's mentioned that hashtag. So clicking #Intellectual up there would take you to a bunch of intellectual posts. And you tag people or pages with a "+" before their name.2012-01-23 13:52:20463500CC G+
Mitchel Rodwell0+Duncan Hayes , +Hanii Leigh this is a big circle, which I call "Political". You'll find people with strong political views here, as well as political news and people who care about politics. I'd advise you add one or the other out of this and my other circle, "Intellectual" because they're both pretty big and I don't want to give you guys too much before you're ready :)2012-01-23 13:48:07366405CC G+

If you're from #America, or there's a push in your country to be more 'American' (looking at you, #Australia; you voted for the LNP) then take a look at this. It might help you to put into perspective the future that we're looking at.

So what? Rich people are rich, get over it.

If you acknowledge that your objection is a selfish rather than moral consideration (that you simply care more about yourself possibly being  a billionaire one day than you do about the suffering of thousands and thousands of people, right now), fuck you. I don't have time for immoral people and frankly, you're the parasite on society. Do you feel like I'm being harsh? You just told me you care more about more millions than you could ever need for yourself than you do about lives elsewhere. I think that's pretty harsh.

If, on the otherha... more »

Bad social habits can interfere with your ability to develop relationships and engage in meaningful conversations with others. Be on the lookout for these bad habits so you can start to become more sociable today.

1. Complaining to Gain Sympathy
Complaining about how bad your life is or how unfair things are to gain other’s attention and sympathy, can backfire quickly. It might work in the short-term because people want to respond with kindness, but if it becomes a habit, you’re more likely to send people running in the other direction.

2. Focusing on Your Point of View Only
Focusing on what you’ve got to say without really hearing other points of view is a habit that will quickly annoy others. Truly listening to other points of view is at the heart of good communication.

If you find yourself always thinking about what you’re going to say next, rather than hearing what others have to say, work on your communication skills. Become more sociable by asking follow-up questions or rephrasing what the other person has said before getting back to your point of view.

3. Listening Half-Heartedly
If you think you’re good at multi-tasking while you communicate, you might be surprised at how much you’re missing. It’s disrespectful to other people if you can’t put down your cell phone, pause the TV, or make eye contact when someone is talking with you.

Practice giving people your undivided attention whether you’re on the phone or talking to someone in person. Show that you value what they have to say and make a concerted effort to stop trying to multi-task while they’re talking.

4. Taking the Wind out of People’s Sails
If you only point out the negative, people will quickly stop wanting to talk to you. It’s one thing to point out some potential negative aspects of a person’s choices, but it should be balanced with the positive points as well.

Whether you’ve got a friend who is dating someone new or a family member who has interviewed for a new job, avoid telling them all the reasons why they aren’t likely to be successful. If you want to be more sociable, offer support and be willing to cheer others on as they attempt to make their way through the world.

5. Attempting to Always Please Everyone
You can’t make everyone happy all the time so there’s no need to try. If you always try to do what others want, you’re actually likely to annoy people.

Become more sociable by being willing to share your opinion in respectful ways. Avoid always answering questions with statements like, “I don’t care,” or “Whatever you want is fine.”

6. Arguing About Everything
Argumentative people quickly turn others off. Avoid constantly correcting people or debating with them. You don’t always have to agree with others and you don’t need to attempt to change their minds. Focus more on the relationship than trying to prove that you’re always right.

7. Talking About Yourself too Much
People will grow tired of hearing all about you if you don’t ever offer them a chance to talk about themselves. Ask questions about others and show a genuine interest in learning about their lives. Don’t allow yourself to keep the focus on you and everything happening in your world only.

8. Gossiping About Everyone
If you gossip about everyone else, people will begin to avoid you. Smart people will recognize that they’re not immune to being a victim of your gossip.

Avoid spreading rumors or contributing to drama. Avoid talking about other people’s business and become more sociable by sharing ideas and experiences.

9. Bragging About Your Accomplishments
It’s okay to be proud of your accomplishments, but bragging about yourself isn’t an endearing way to attract people. Unless you’re at a job interview, there is no need to tell people how great you are.

10. Dealing with Anger Inappropriately
Whether you tend to yell and scream or simply cut people out of your life every time you feel angry, dealing with anger inappropriately can seriously limit your social life. Learn how to speak up and express yourself in an assertive manner. Asking for what you want is fine, but becoming demanding or hostile isn’t likely to win you any friendship awards.___

#Political parties exist to secure responsible government and to execute the will of the people. From these great tasks both of the old parties have turned aside. Instead of instruments to promote the general welfare they have become the tools of corrupt interests, which use them impartially to serve their selfish purposes. Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics, is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.

Why is the government ignoring the likely human rights abuses in Sri Lanka? The #SriLankan  government has not allowed any independent assessment after a UN enquiry found that 40 000 civilians may have been killed in the last battle of the civil war. The high likelihood of war crimes being committed by the Sri Lankan government has caused Canada, India and Mauritius to boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, as well as causing UK prime minister David Cameron to personally go and investigate these abuses.

Is it related to the government requesting that they assist in keeping refugees from Australia?

If so, will the government commit to not forcing refugees to stay in a country that may have very recently committed war crimes on a huge scale, when we could care for them much better?

You just told me you care more about more millions than you could ever need for yourself than you do about lives elsewhere. I think that's pretty harsh.

If, on the other hand, you're determined to believe that this is moral, then I disagree with your morality. It is only moral and just that people are rewarded for their effort and the effort of society, not accidents of birth. For example, we generally accept policies not to hire specific ethnicities to be racist and immoral. This is because if employers were given that unrestricted freedom (to choose to distribute wealth to only those ethnicities they approve of), it would lead to an abhorrent and unjust outcome as those in power sought to remain in power.

The same way a company can become a monopoly in a market through having friends in government, intelligence on their competitors, or simply getting a head start, a group of  people can establish a monopoly on power in a society and they hold on.

Between ethnicities, this is called apartheid. Between families, it's called inheritance, spendthrift trust funds, 'tax effective investments', etc. Keeping others down is not morally justifiable. By all means, strive to achieve. Strive with all of your being to do something that means something. Don't strive to prevent others achieving. In a society where everyone has maximal opportunity to achieve, everyone ends up better off.

Especially in the modern world, where the pace of life is changing faster than ever because people can share their discoveries and innovations, this matters even more. Think about this: the income of the highest paid hedge-fund manager. That's one and a half billion dollars, every year. That could lift four million, one hundred thousand people out of extreme poverty. One extra US$ a day may not seem like much to some, but if it's the difference between dying of starvation and living to do something, it means a lot. That one guy who manages that one fund is not doing more good for humanity than four million lifted out of extreme poverty could.

On a broader scale, think about the ramifications if we begin to redistribute some of the insane inequality in this world. Where there was once one hundred people who attended gala's, there are now fifty million educated, fed children. That's double the population of Australia, ready to contribute to society. I don't know about you, but I think those children can do a lot more good for this world than a hundred hedge fund managers.

Imagine a future, freer society where 10 billion bright, wonderful minds had the financial freedom to do as much as they could. To design the next Khan Academy in their spare time. To raise a beautiful, deserving child that doesn't have to know the pain of hunger or beatings from parents who don't know better.

Now stop imagining and start acting. Use your time, use your skills, let your leaders know that you care about using the money of your nation as effectively as possible for the world, not in foreign aid, but in infrastructure, malaria, spreading education. Make it clear that you won't be an instrument in the accumulation and abuse of power.___

My main issue is the Investor-State Dispute Resolution; it's about a fuckton worse than it sounds. Under this law, if the Australian government punishes a company for harming the Australian public, or preemptively protects us or the environment from an unethical company, that company can then sue the government for millions and millions (sometimes billions) of taxpayer dollars as 'compensation' for not being allowed to fuck us over.

Signing everything you can about the TPP and saying no to Investor-State Dispute Resolution (ISDP) would be a real good idea right about now.

Wouldn't it be awesome if humans were actually just gigantic collections of ancient molecular machines, machines that gained the capability to reproduce themselves millions and billions of years ago? The event that spawned these replicators could have been anything, I don't care what. It would just be so awe inspiring. Each time they replicated, there would be a chance that their new form would be a little different from their old form. A group of a few hundred of these amazing machines would begin to replicate using some energy that's all around them, then replicate again, and again, and maybe one of those times, one of them gets better at replicating. Suddenly it makes two machines. Pretty soon, even from one or two of them, there'd be millions, then billions, then trillions.

As the number of these tiny machines grew into quantities uncountable by any human alive, the best of them at replicating would copy themselves more than any others, mostly outcompeting the slower copiers for resources. Individual machines would continue to replicate on their own, but maybe one day one of them changes. Instead of splitting into two new machines, every tenth time it splits one of the new machines is a grossly deformed lump of atoms. These sorts of mistakes would happen all the time, after all; these machines are tiny, and they have no protection against the destructive forces of ionisation, heat, reduction or oxidation. But then, just imagine if one of those millions of misshapen lumps of failed replicator did something useful; it absorbed a small amount of radiation before that radiation could destroy the replicator. That little replicator that failed would suddenly become the little replicator that could! And all the replicators around it would get a little protection, too; suddenly the whole group performs better!

This is getting pretty speculative of me, pretty fantasy, but maybe those replicators would replicate better if the other replicators near them produced those radiation-blocking lumps of atoms, and then in one of the millions of groups that contain a replicator who produces those lumps, another replicator produces another lump. Except that lump doesn't do anything to radiation; it could just be some chemical that keeps the replicators with the radiation-blocking lumps close by. What would that do? Suddenly you have a group of replicators, with some replicators holding all of them together with their huggy lumps, and a lot of replicators that protect all of them from some types of radiation with their sunscreen lumps. Suddenly they're a real group. They can't get too big because then there's no way for resources to get to the middle, but they're a group that functions more successfully than the little replicators alone.

More and more groups are made, and some of them get even better at replicating, with replicators that make molecular shells, replicators that transport resources to the middle of the group, replicators that produce lumps which work for ages.

At larger and larger scales, these replicators fill more and more niches in the natural world. Millions of years pass, and then billions. As the replicators get better at replicating, they get more and more complex (sometimes), and the groups of them form groups, and then those groups form groups, and then those groups of groups of groups have some special groups close to the ground that let them move, and the ones that move towards more resources replicate even more.

These complex systems change over time, getting bigger and better at replicating. Some of those groups of groups make stable structures to hold other groups closer to the sun, where those other groups of groups make resources from its light. Some other groups of groups of groups consume some groups of groups of groups, turning them into resources. A balance forms, an ever moving balance between uncountable different forces that drive change, at the tiniest level and into the macro level.

So many different, elegantly messy, complex systems. Systems of these complex systems evolve, then systems of those systems form. The wonder of life is everywhere, unappreciated by itself because the concept of appreciation is denied to all but some of the most complex systems. Those very complex systems, in their interactions with each other, attain what we call intelligence, whatever that means in the face of all of that ridiculously simple complexity.

That would be awesome.___

Protect Whistleblowers: Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process.

In case my friends do not realise why this is poignant, within the past few months the United States government (with the full support of Obama) has taken the following actions to persecute the #NSA   #whistleblower   Edward Snowden:

- forcibly grounded the presidential plane of the Bolivian head of state on suspicion that Edward Snowden was aboard

- adopted into law (literally into the legislature) the intent of the USA to enforce trade sanctions against any country that gave Edward Snowden asylum from political persecution

- charged Snowden formally under the Espionage Act, which if convicted could easily carry the death penalty

Now, the USA recently publicised claims that they would not pursue the death penalty against Snowden, and would not extradite him for torture. The content of these claims was not binding and was worded specifically to address the possibility of the Russians handing him over immediately; failing that eventuality, their non-promises are null anyway.

Don't take my word for it; get informed, share this information, let people know.

I like America. I want America to be one of many coexisting countries in the international community. I do not want America to be the police, judge, jury, and executioner for the entire world.___
