Stanisław Soluch6,125Wspólny album województwa podlaskiego. Zapraszam. Proponowane tagi:   #fkEvent , #fkPoland ,   #fkPodlasie , #Poland oraz własne wg. uznania. Zapraszam. Pierwszy komentarz zawiera tagi poprzedzone oznakowaniem -  #fk...(miejsce, region, kraj) Hello World!  I'm sorry, please photos of Polish, the region - Podlasie. ((( Photography does not have to be geo tagging and there are no mandatory requirements but if you have these expectations that I would be happy: 1.  Photo of a text footer to the information space: place, region, country 2.  The first comment has preceded marking tags - # fk ... Eventy i tagi segregują nasze zbiory - łatwo wtedy poznajemy podobne np okolice, kwiaty i inne dziedziny.
Stanisław Soluch6,125KONIEC ŚWIATA - Czas, Kalendarz, Zegar; max 2/day,  #fkPHOTOandPLACE Wymogami są tagi #fkPHOTOandPLACE, #fkTime lub #fkCalendar lub #fkClock lub #fksundial lub  #fkDecadence oraz 1. tagi (mogą  być też zapisane pod zdjęciem w komentarzu) wskazujące miejsce 2. lub w Exif-ie są geotagi i po kliknięciu we Właściwościach zdjęcia można kliknąć małą mapkę by wyświetlić Google Map całej okolicy 3. albo jest stopka mówiąca o miejscu wykonania zdjęcia  - zachęcam - i pozdrawiam Requirements are tags #fkPHOTOandPLACE, #fkTime or #fkCalendar or #fkClock or #fksundial  or  #fkDecadence :  1. tags because they are (they can also be saved in a comment under the photo) indicating the place 2. or Exif-e are geotags and click on Properties, you can click the small images to view the map Google Map throughout the area 3. or a shoe talking about shooting spot - Encourage - and greetPhoto: END OF THE WORLD and NEW YEAR- Time, Calendar, Clock, max 2/day, #fkPHOTOandPLACE2013-01-18 00:00:0041

Don't let IS destroy Palmyra, the "Venice of the Sands"

The city of Palmyra, in Syria, more than 2000-years-old, is one of the most magical places I have ever visited.  Islamic State (IS) fighters have been advancing towards Palmyra and it is a matter of days before it falls into their hands to be pillaged and destroyed.

Palmyra sits at the edge of an oasis of date palms and gardens and has been, for millennia, a watering place on a trade route from the east.  Think caravans bringing Chinese silks, stopping to water their camels on the way to Rome!

It makes me sad that, as we spend our time chatting about receiving Amazon packages via drones, using self-driven Google cars, hailing taxis via Uber, and counting our calories with Apple smartwatches, this historical masterpiece will be forever wiped out.

The 500-year old gilded cage

Stunning as it is, the fabulous Château de Chenonceau, has been a place of intrigue, exile and imprisonment for much of its history.

- Has the king tired of his affair with you?
- Have you been foolish enough to piss off the queen?
- Was it rumored that you were getting too cozy with anti-royalists?

Off you go to Chenonceau, sometimes for the remainder of your days - or, at least, till they forget about you...

The Chateau has passed through many different hands, but it was not always great luck to own it. For one, a greedy queen may be plotting to get her claws on it. For another, maintenance takes a fat wallet: many have gone bankrupt to keep these walls standing for 500 years...

Seeing inside the body: the scanner tunnel

Think of the scanner as the reverse of a 3D printer.  The 3D printer takes a known (digitally designed) structure and "prints" it, layer by layer.  The scanner does the opposite: it starts with an unknown structure (my body - with or without cancer?) and tries to "explore" it by taking many images of it, once again, layer by layer.  The scanner, thus, produces what the printer starts with: a digital 3D structure.

The patient is placed in a machine that looks like a tunnel and stays completely motionless while invisible ray-guns move around him taking a large number of images, digitally slicing his body like a salami.  To make the images easier to read, the salami is given an injection of a "contrast agent" just before being placed in the tunnel.  The shot creates a strong full body heatflas... more »

All this allows us to see deep inside the body in ways that are impossible otherwise.  Scrolling with her mouse, the doctor can look into my body in great detail, and flag things that don't seem right.  During the 5-year surveillance period after treatment, cancer patients (survivors? victims?) undergo regular scans to check for metastases (new occurrences of cancer).

There is, however, a price to pay for this technological miracle.  A single scan delivers the equivalent of thousands of X-rays.  This radiation itself causes cancer.  It is estimated that about 1% of cancers are caused by scans.  Catch-22?

(This is my first scan since surgery.  Tomorrow I will have the results.)

Outdoor dining al fresco

With spring well-established by now in the northern hemisphere, restaurants and cafes, from San Francisco to Barcelona are busy dragging their tables outside.  Nomad is fond of dining al fresco, despite the fact that his table top soon turns white from the multitude of Kleenex he needs to service his extensive nose from the storm of pollen and the accompanying assault of hay fever.

His eyes itching and watering, he can still enjoy a quiet lunch of cabillaud with kasha at a small restaurant against the soaring walls of the Cathedral of Saint Anne, in the center of Montpellier.

Not to be missed, on your next trip to southern France.

Where people linger, streets are alive

Like schools of fish, crowds of people swim through cities, purposeful, determined. Think of the release of energy when the subway car opens its doors. Everyone flees! The important thing is not where they are, but where they are going: future, not present.

Montpellier is a city full of squares at every crossing, ancient history, curving streets, giant shade trees, outdoor dining and an attitude towards space that does not reduce it to just "real estate" and "commercial opportunity".

Here, people linger on their way from A to B, like fish do around corral reefs, and observe their surroundings, and talk, and interact, and enjoy the present moment, and fall in love. When we say a city is magical, or that it has great energy, this is part of what we mean.

Ireland delivers a message for tolerance

I just noticed the stunning victory for gay marriage in Ireland. If I am right, this referendum is particularly important precisely because Ireland has such a strong catholic tradition.

It sends the signal, strongly and unambiguously, that religious and sexual tolerance are not incompatible. I imagine that, thanks to the Irish people, religious authorities have been delivered the most definitive message yet, that change is in order.

And that is wonderful news for so many parts of the world that extend far and wide from the shores of this emerald island. With a Guinness or some cider, Ireland is what we are toasting this weekend.

For the child within

I discovered this fabulous toy shop in Montpellier, that reminded me of the films of Tim Burton (remember "Edward Scissorhands"?)

The shop window was fantastic: everything was moving about: giant flowers and a guy with a net chasing a butterfly. It was all handmade and low tech and goofy and utterly charming.

The staff inside had never played video games, they had huge smiles and giggled and were wearing funny hats and clown noses and oversized glasses. In the lovely southern French town of Montpellier, I was, suddenly, magically in the 1950s, a child, before I was even born!

Glide like a seabird

Beautifully adapted to glide between earth & water, seabirds amaze us by occupying that firing line between these two elements: the beach.

In our envy, we attempt to join the seabirds, so we can experience, however fleetingly, however awkwardly, the feeling of soaring along the ocean's border.

Take a child to the beach. Watch it. It will immediately be drawn to that zone where wave meets sand, where wind and water shapes earth and is shaped by it.

At the beach we all become children. It can't be helped. So we keep inventing toys to play with her. Really: to commune with nature, to participate in the powerful forces here, to feel part of what is going on here.

Part 8: She took off her sandals and walked right in

I go for long stretches as if that summer never happened. I wake up mornings, have my tea, walk the dogs, clip the bushes, read my pages, prepare my lectures, turn in under crispy white sheets. As if she never existed.

As if that morning, on that island, I did not try her crystal sandal and noticed the similarities: another half that had never been lost was suddenly found.

And then, there are days like today, when, groggy from sleep, it all comes back to me: that beach, the perfect pebbles she covered me with, the weird bone I put on her hair, that confused and confusing summer.

I still cannot tell in advance what will trigger her memory. I still have no choice when it happens.

( All those years ago. A story I have tried to tell again and again.

Late spring in the south of France

Ah, the south of France! Land of wine, lavender, blue Mediterranean waters, music festivals, great cuisine, Roman ruins, ancient towns & villages, lovely countryside.

And hordes of tourists in the summertime! Now is the final time to visit, before the kids finish school, before the temperatures rise, before the local hospitality industry starts feeling hassled & turns into "processing mode".

Unless you are Angelina & Brad, or Johnny & Vanessa (or, what's her name), or any of the many movie stars with villas in these parts. A world apart...

(My reasons for going south are, for the time, more medical than touristy, but if sickness is a "journey" then it's all the same.)

Ketamine: now I understand!

"This will only hurt a tiny bit" is what we are used to hearing at the doctor's.
Not at all like: "You will be on a flying luge, soaring through a giant beech forest, with ferns brushing against your cheeks, for half an hour".

But this is exactly what it felt like, when, during a small diagnostic outpatient operation, I was put under anesthesia using Ketamine & Propofol.  WoW!

For years I had heard that teenagers, clubbers and others used Ketamine, (something I had also heard was an animal tranquilizer - "animal"?  as opposed to "human"? who is is not an "animal"? anyway...) to get high.  Well, yesterday, the doctors used it on me.

I refuse to be dishonest about how it felt: fantastic!  (This does not mean we should become repeated users, I am sure it does plenty of damage.  Of course I am NOT endorsing drug use - I don't even take aspirin.)  But I have never had such an utterly pleasant, psychedelic, shamanistic experience in my life.  And I "woke up" feeling great from it.  I say "woke up" but it is not quite accurate: I never felt I slept: I just went for that flying luge trip through the beech forest.

(The diagnostics were good yesterday.  The real definitive tests, the scans, are next Tuesday.  Fingers crossed.  Today, I am heading south for those, more later...)

Sleepless: cancer again takes center stage

It was nice while it lasted.  I had my 4 months of vacation from cancer and now, as planned, it is time to check up on him once again.
- Will he be there?
- Will he be gone?
- Will he be sleeping & waiting?
Starting tomorrow and during the following week, I start tests to try to answer these questions.

How am I?
It is hard to know.  Sometimes I forget all about it & then it comes back, in waves.  I do everything I normally do, but it is as if there is someone walking behind me with a gun against the back of my head: will he pull the trigger?

How do I sleep?
I have dreams of falling in love.  On those nights, one in two, I sleep well, like a king (it is a king's bed, in the photo).  On the nights I don't dream of falling in love, I wake up often, but without black thoughts,with... more »

How do I feel?
A bit numb, a bit giddy.  Impatient: I want this waiting to be over.

One good thing in my mind:
I will go to the hospital with suitcases packed.  If the news is good, I am off to Italy for 3 weeks.  A nomad again...

- I have to be scanned every 4 months for the next 5 years to nip any metastases "in the bud"
- Every scan without a metastasis increases my chance of survival by a few percentage points until, in 5 years time, if all is clean, I become, once again, "normal"

I have been designed to be scary by Mr. Darwin

We are so often taken by the beauty of animals (the green flash of a lizard, the bright orange of a mushroom, a leopard's spots) that we forget that many of these features are meant to be protective.

Butterflies and moths, on the face of it, are some of the prettiest & most vulnerable creatures around.  If you hold one in your hands, half of it comes out on your fingers.  This is because they are never really meant to be caught, thanks to the beautiful designs on their feathers which, seen from the correct angle, are meant to scare.

Take this moth for example: it does NOT want to be bird lunch.  As soon as it sits on a leaf to rest, all it has to do is spread its wings.  As soon as it does that, an altogether different animal, a cat, is staring up into the sky, ensuring that birds keep theirdis... more »

Of course, the moth does not "know" that his wing designs are scary: it is the magic of evolution that has taken care of that: scarier moths are more likely to survive.

(I wish I had something similar to keep teenagers with loudspeakers in their backpacks away from me.  What an utterly obnoxious trend that is...)

We have incubators & kickstarters where people donate money to create bluetooth-connected toothbrushes!  Why can't we connect/interact/crowdsource to save the treasures of Syria, Iraq, Timbuktu, Yemen etc etc etc?

Why haven't the global tech giants, in particular, who could provide funds, reconnaissance & tech support, teamed up with the UN to help protect our shared cultural heritage from thieving fanatics?

Larry, we need an initiative urgently: this is a hornet's nest but it is your cup of tea as well.

The majestic oak tree

OK, OK, we all know that I like plants, flowers, gardens... nature!

But once in a while, I run into something that really blows me away.  This oak was it this year, I just could not believe my eyes.

I had seen giant trees before and very large oaks before, but this one, its grace, the balance of its branches, the way they twist out in all directions, defying gravity, defying the weather, defying time!  She must be 600-800 years old?  Maybe more?

Somewhere in a forest in Brittany, she has seen many like me pass her by, admiring her and, admirably, sparing her for all these centuries...

As light-footed as her ducks

I run into this lovely sculpture at the garden of a mansion during my trip to northwest France.  I immediately liked her!  What a gait she has!

And that bag and that ribbon flowing from her hat!  The ducks seem to be dazzled as well:
- "Should we follow this crazy woman?"
- "Does she have breadcrumbs in that bag?"
- "But the pond is the other way!"
- "Years ago, my grandfather told me to never trust humans because you may end up as foie gras"

Nomad visits the Château de Saumur

It was thrilling to me to visit this fairytale castle, originally built 1000 years ago. Wrapped up in its protective shell, it is still under restoration: meticulous and using only traditional materials and methods.

In its long history, the castle has gone through many many lives and restorations: among other uses, it has been a prison, army barracks, residence. It is currently a Museum of the Horse as well as a museum of decorative arts.

And, yes, the river you see flowing below is the Loire, which means you can see the chateau while sipping some of France's most fabulous wines. In fact, you can see a vineyard growing right behind me.

Last Crepe in Brittany

A bit like "Last Tango in Paris", with just as much butter, I am having my last crepe on Brittany. They have been a great treat but also a bit like enchiladas on a visit to Mexico: too much of a good thing.

One of the nice things about Breton crepes you may not know: they are made with buckwheat, so they are much healthier than the regular kind.

The unforgettable flower

My favorite explanation for the popular name of the "forget-me-not" is romantic: "the wearers of the flower would not be forgotten by their lovers".

The Greeks thought that its petals looked like mouse ears, which is why its genus is called Myosotis (you know the "otis" - ear - part already from "otolaryngologist" - ear/nose/throat doctor).

A house, somewhere in Brittany

Houses in Brittany dance between the formal and the rustic.
The shapes are formal and classical: severe simplicity, symmetries, repetition. The rusticity comes from the materials: rough-cut granite, uneven tiles, unadorned windows.

And then, there is the playfulness: I love how this front door maximizes sunlight and security, playing with a chessboard of perfect squares.

And, of course, the perfect rusticity of the garden invading the house!

Neither 3D-printed, nor laser-cut

Western consumers have a schizophrenic relationship with handmade objects. On the one hand, we cherish them because they represent a respite from automation & industrialization. On the other hand, we have a horror of poor working conditions and repetitive tasks.

Take this wonderful card I recently received from Vietnam. It is entirely handmade. Someone with a lot of skill, precision and patience, spend hours putting together this small handcrafted masterpiece.

It is extremely pleasing to receive this and admire the effort and art that went into creating it. On the other hand, its extremely low price implies that it was made by subsistence labor.

Would you buy this card or not, and why?

Order & Chaos: the Japanese garden

Every garden ultimately represents a conversation, a dance, with nature. No matter who leads, this dance, like any dance, needs two parties: nature and the gardener.

There are "tighter" gardens, like French gardens, where the gardener seems to be guiding nature's hand (with geometry, for example). There are "looser" gardens, like English gardens, which look closer to natural settings (albeit idealized).

And then, there is the Japanese garden which defies a facile description. Here, both tendencies seem more extreme. The pruning and artificial reshaping of plants, on the one hand, is an exaggerated imposition of human order. At the same time, nature is allowed its chaotic place, in a game of chance, that glorifies and elevates her in a manner you cannot encounter at an occidental garden.... more »

Arachnophilia: "love of spiders"

I will start by saying that I have a lot of sympathy for those who are scared of spiders. Evolution is on their side: it is a natural self-preservation instinct to avoid creepy-crawlies.

I am one of those that don't share this instinct: I like spiders. Not as pets or collection objects: I like them as free creatures existing in the wild. I like to watch them but I let them be... well, after, perhaps, a bit of experimentation.

A nest of spider babies is particularly spectacular. All the tiny spiders are gathered into a ball in the center, so as to seem larger and more ominous. But if a predator gets closer (as I do with my fine in the video), they all disperse into a creepy fireworks.

Travel & Coincidence

I never planned to visit this remote island, this "Falklands" of France, until I got here. Only to find out that my ancestors had got here first, and much more dramatically than myself.

And, in some ways, they are still here...

In 1935, a Greek freighter, the "Mykonos" (I am kidding you not!), sunk at the exact bay I visited yesterday. It was carrying sheep. Sheep!!! I should not be surprised, I guess, since a Greek ship in 1935, could not be carrying much else (olive oil, perhaps?)

Anyway, the ship sunk, but the sheep made it to shore. Where they mixed with the local variety, forever changing its genetic line. The more you travel, the more the world gets smaller, cozier...

This is what the very end of France looks like

I have finally arrived at the most northwestern part of France: the island of Ouessant, just off the tip of the Bretagne peninsula.

The coast here is deadly, full of submerged reefs waiting to pierce the hull of your ship and smash what remains against the most unfriendly coast I have ever seen: there is not a single beach on the entire 8-km long island!

And the Atlantic here is brutal: high winds building up all the way from the US eat coast, bringing freezing lashing rains.

QUESTION:
- Do you know why the French have guarded this godforsaken island zealously for centuries?
THE ANSWER IS IN THE VIDEO!

I like my private swimming pool but...

... I am starting to miss the old pond by the swamp. To be sure, there were several disadvantages. And I am not only speaking of all the other frogs and their young croaking about.

No, sir! The big problem was with the herons! You could never quite relax when the herons were about. A heron is much faster than frog. And you never see them coming. They can stay still for hours, their feet like the stalks of cattails. And just as you swim by, all pleased with yourself in the thick green water, you suddenly find yourself souvlaki'ed by their terrible beak.

On second thought, I think I prefer my swimming pool...

Treacherous and Merciless: Unless you solve the riddle

Most people know the principal riddle of the Sphinx. The second riddle is less well-known but just as clever: "There are two sisters: one gives birth to the other and she, in turn, gives birth to the first. Who are the two sisters?" (answer below).

My favorite modern interpretation of the myth of the Sphinx is by Jean Cocteau: the Sphinx as victim, seeking to be killed in order to be liberated from her own fate of viciousness. In this version, the Sphinx prays for someone to solve her riddle.

(In Greek mythology, a sphinx is represented as a monster with a head of a woman, the body of a lioness, the wings of an eagle, and a serpent-headed tail.)

ANSWER:
The answer is "day and night" (both words are feminine in Greek).

Three pinks of spring. No 2: the clematis

One of my favorite climbers, the clematis never disappoints.
In early spring she starts her leaves quickly to gather a bit of extra energy for the incredible flower show to follow. After a few days of mild sunlight, she is ready to go: her round buds start to fill up until, one beautiful sunny spring day, they unfold into a massive pink flower feast.

And, for a couple of weeks, if the weather stays cool enough, the clematis is more flower than plant, as its pink blanket covers leaves and stems spreading its elegant perfume throughout the day.

The clematis will stop you on your feet or on your wings: bees and butterflies are just as helplessly drawn to her as hapless romantics.

Three pinks of spring. No 1: the tulip

The tulip is a royal that knows when to retire, a beloved performer that quits the show at her peak.

Just when you thought that the garden could not get any uglier, the tulip peeks through the muck, perfectly thick green leaves emerging through the winter's carnage. And just when everyone else is contemplating the last frost, the tulip spreads her colorful plumes, on slender confident stems, indifferent to rain or cold.

But no Las Vegas second acts for her! As color starts shyly spreading through the garden from all corners, the tulip takes her graceful bows and is gone, until next year...

No place like home?

Arriving at a French chateau, it is important to remember that it used to be someone's home.

This "someone" lived there and did everything we do in our homes: slept, dined, watched the rain falling on the windows, walked the gardens, daydreamed, burned with fever, fell in and out of love, raised children, died.

But such is the splendor of these castles, that it is difficult to believe they were actual homes (though TV, through shows like "Downton Abbey", have made castle living more familiar to us).

To me, the most magnificent aspect is the sense of history: this particular castle I am visiting, the Château de Chenonceau, is over 500 years old! I tremble at the idea it is still standing and it is still so glorious.

What these walls have seen, what these corridors have heard...

The garden of France: the Loire Valley

Crossing the Loire Valley in the spring (on my way to Brittany) is a feast for the senses. Thanks to its mild climate & excellent irrigation, the valley is home to stunning farmland and dense, abundant deciduous forests.

No wonder that the valley was favored by France's kings and nobles, who have studded the countryside with magnificent fairytale castles.

You can follow a myriad trails, on foot or by bike, completely cut away from modernity, inside these enormous estates, many of which are now public parks.

I am on the way to a smallish chateau, surrounded by water on three sides, traditionally favored by the king of France in early spring...

Gracefully poisonous: Lily of the valley

What is not to like about the May lily or muguet (French)?
- its leaves are bright green and as cheerful as an ice cream cone
- it grows where few will: around the shady trunks of trees
- in the garden, you plant it once and forget all about it. But it doesn't forget you: every May 1 you can count on its pristine white bell-like flowers

In France, even the Ministry of Finance likes it: people gift it on May 1 'without paying sales tax (on that day only) as a symbol of spring.'

Happy May 1!

Road-trip to "Lesser Britain"

("Lesser Britain" is another name for Bretagne, or Brittany, the beautiful, wild northwestern tip of Atlantic France).

I am crossing France diagonally, by car, from the Mediterranean, to this wet, foggy, verdant peninsula, where the local language can be understood by people speaking Welsh.

Amusingly, the very name Britain, was coined by a Greek who also made the same crossing as me, from Marseille: "Πρεττανικη (Prettanike) or Βρεττανίαι (Brettaniai), used by Pytheas, an explorer from Massalia who visited the British Islands around 320 BC."

It is a marvelous drive of small country roads illuminated by vast fields of bright flowering colza. As bright as my spirits, on this first long road-trip across France.

Groomed:  pruning your olive grove

There are lots of advantages to keeping your olive trees nicely pruned.  Most important: you can reach the olives by hand without climbing a ladder!  (Though, in many countries, there is an alternative: blankets are spread under the tree to collect the falling olives as the branches are beaten with sticks).

But there is also an aesthetic dimension for those that desire a more formal and regular grove: the olive tree takes pruning well resulting in fairly homogeneous rows of similar-shaped plants that shimmer together, silver-green, in the spring breezes.  (This would be nearly impossible to do with, say, walnut trees).

Whichever way you like the tree, sprawling or groomed, the olives will taste just as good.

At the olive grove: practicality meets aesthetics

Invariably, Mediterranean earth is rocky, dry, with low fertility. For millennia, farmers cleared their fields by picking the stones and fought hard to create soil and preserve it from flash floods.

But what to do with all these stones?

You build nice, tidy walls to keep them out of your field. The walls also come handy in keeping some nasties out: goats and wild boar, for example. They can keep your donkey from eating your figs.

Thus, the labyrinths of Mediterranean dry stone walls were built through the centuries. And though many are crumbling and the art of building and repairing them is dying, there are, still, thousands of kilometers of them still standing, waiting for your footsteps to pass them by.

The olive tree: new spring growth

It is so easy to admire the olive tree for its fruit (the olive) and its juice (olive oil) that we often forget what a beautiful tree it is in its own right.

Especially in early spring, when the new bright khaki branches explode from last year's thick foliage. This one is a young one, proudly growing before a very old wall. But both olive tree and wall are exceptionally well-made and they can both easily last for another few hundred years.

I hope the same for good old Europe where new spring growth is barely visible.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR: The glory of a courtyard

Somewhere between a dining room and a picnic blanket, the courtyard is my favorite place for meals. Surrounded by walls, it is safe and cozy: the house is just there. The gravel floor gives a nice crunch to your every step. The plants are vibrant but do not overwhelm. And when the light fails, you only need to raise your head to see the stars.

Splendido!

WILD/TAME: Leda's seducer

There is something incredibly powerful about a swan. More even than his beauty and grace, the swan dominates with his strength and confidence.

In art and mythology, he is second only to the eagle as a symbol of winged royalty. And of menace, at least to the Greeks.

For when Zeus turns into a swan to seduce Leda, the resulting offspring include Helen and Clytemnestra, not exactly the choicest pair of children in anybody's list. Black or white, the swan seduces and ruins. Keep it in mind on your next lake visit.

Snows are melting: C'est fini!

Time to pack my bags once again.  The Alps are shedding their winter purity. It is time to head back south, towards Province, towards the waking expanses of lavender.

In the Alps, this is the period of strong cold winds from the North.  Of leaf buds slowly swelling.  Of sudden cold rains, muddy days, avalanches & rock falls.  Of transformation: slippery & dangerous.

In the South, the winds will be just as strong but sweeter & more aromatic.  Intense yellow dandelion flowers will soon be covering the vineyards.  Every day will mark another milestone for Persephone: today the hawthorn, tomorrow the almond tree.

Springtime celebration...

WILD/TAME: Man's best frenemy

Just as it is hard not to sympathize with the environmentalists who mourn the scarcity of Europe's top predator, so it is with the plight of the sheep farmers who tremble at his howling.

Especially if you see what a single wolf can do to an entire flock of sheep...

WILD/TAME: "I can pull your sleigh or tear you to pieces"

In the high snowy expanses, he can be your best friend or, a few genes away, you can be his favorite meal. Having seen both, it is hard for me to not draw parallels between the enthusiastic perseverance of the sleigh dog and the cunning stubbornness of the hunting wolf.

They are the flip sides of the same character: one side works for us, the other against us. Thus, the adorable turns into the horrifying.

Never feel guilty for loving desserts

The French eat desserts with impunity while maintaining great silhouettes. And there is nothing fat-free about these desserts! Heavy cream, chocolate, butter, sugar, eggs, candied fruit, almonds, walnut oil: all the rich voluptuous goodies.

Fat has a bad rap in the USA, despite so much serious evidence to the contrary. In France, people enjoy great patisserie and stay svelte! Time to trash fat-free milk and sugar substitutes and embrace real, whole food in moderation!

Not quite "cheeky" yet...

... but getting there, gradually.

I still don't have a scale, it is just something I never had in my life.  Especially now, the idea that I would climb on a machine every day to watch a needle tell me how much weight I have gained is unappetizing.  It kind of makes me feel like a machine myself: so many calories in, so many grams retained in the body.

No way!  Instead, I rely on skin color, eye brightness and, yes!, the gradual reappearance of my cheeks!  Never before had I thought how wonderful cheeks are, what a sign of health & vibrancy & well-being, until I lost mine.

But, with all this French creamy stuff, they are slowly coming back and that is certainly something to smile about.

Why the French Alps are not the California Sierras.

What I miss here:
- the endless expanses of California
- the undiscovered wild: nature untamed, wild animals everywhere (many of them!)
- the (sometimes scary) sense that "nature is the boss here, buddy"
- California informality

What I get here instead:
- villages: uninterrupted human habitation (houses, farms, gardens) since the Middle Ages
- gastronomy: no Kellogg's!  Fresh eggs from our chickens!
- society & tradition "at village scale": no guns, no drugs, no conspiracy theorists, no fundamentalists, no loonies
- French tradition

You can't have it all!!!

Enough!  I have to run away from here

For winter is ending soon and the snows are already starting to melt in the Alps.  So despite being thin as a rail, I have to move northwards if I want to catch some of the last real snow.  In any case, I feel mended: the lavender fields have done their magic and the thick meat stews may have garnered me a couple of kilos.

Sure, there will be snowstorms through March and, even, into April.  But it is not the same thing as snowshoeing through forests piled with heavy snow established for months.

So, today, I am prying myself out of the monastery, packing snug duck-feather parkas into crammed suitcases and retracing the river back up to the high alpine ranges.

Meanwhile, the air smells of spring, the wet southerlies are blowing, hyacinths are smiling. Please!  I am not ready for so much spring yet!   Toonoisy. ... more »

As people celebrate the end of winter, I find myself, once again, a minority.  Is anyone here with me?

The secrets of the monastery's cellar

I have been hiding away at an 11th century x-convent somewhere in Provence, amid frozen lavender fields.

You know how I love old buildings, the patina of time, stories & stories engraved on every little thing.

They tolerate my curiosity here and they let me explore everywhere I want, including the cellars.  I am like a child, once again, opening creaking doors, pushing aside cobwebs, flashlight in hand, eyes wide-open... and slightly spooked.

In one of the messiest, dustiest cellars I run into her.  I smiled and smiled.  Her sweetness, her regard.  No one seems to know how she got there, who made her.  I had to try hard not to touch.
