Is that Batman? Or Lake Nemrut, Turkey? Either way, why not *be a real life superhero today* - make a difference! Looking due north from the International Space Station towards the North Pole from east of Fryeburg, Maine where Robert E. Peary, born 157 years ago today, worked as a surveyor after graduating from Bowdoin College in 1877. What do you suppose the legendary discoverer of the North Pole had in mind when he wrote at the age of 21, “as I think of what the world is and that I have my life before me, nothing seems impossible.” Image credit: NASA

52 years ago today, Alan Shepard became the first American to fly in space. Our expedition 28 mission patch honors both the first American, Alan Shepard and the first human Yuri Gagarin. It was an honor to be aboard the International Space Station during the 50th anniversary of both of those milestones.

The river snaking through this picture taken by a human living and working on the International Space Station is a fence made of wire, wood and floodlights just inside India at its border with Pakistan. The light on Earth's horizon is airglow made of atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, which protects all life on our planet.

Today is #WorldWaterDay with nearly 1 billion people still lacking access to clean, safe drinking water we still have a long way to go. Seeing this picture of Lake Kivu in Rwanda #FromSpace reminds me of where one effort to provide clean water got it's start. Here's http://bit.ly/10kSyjp the story of how the +Manna Energy Foundation starting with our first trip to Rwanda in 2006 (all the pictures in this album are from that trip) led to 4.5 million people who now have access to clean water, with an additional 3 million who will have clean water by the end of this year. This was all made possible through Manna Energy Ltd. and our partner organizations use of innovative funding.
Note: My efforts with the Manna Energy Foundation and Manna Energy Ltd. are in no way connected with my employment with NASA and are conducted in my off-duty time.
