Why I do photography?

This is a question I asked myself last night after being called "You're not a photographer" by some one who calls them self a professional and a Christian.  To answer why I started is a hard question, I started soon after my mother passed away. Why I did this was to be able to enjoy the same hobby my fiancée had enjoyed for years and bring us closer together.

After taking some photos and posting them here on G+ people would +1 my efforts and give some amazing feed back, some would even say I had a natural talent (special thanks goes to +Blake Rudis here for his wonderful guidance, help and kind words). People within the +UK Photography Community where and are so kind with helping everyone improve and accepting anyone's work not just for the image they posts but from the people that post them. Pembroke Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Most of the castle was built in the 12th-Century Britain, it was rebuilt in stone creating most of the structure that remains today. The castle was also the birth place of King Henry VII.

The weather has been amazing the last few days allowing me to go out and get this shot. Hopefully I can go out again in the next few days before the weather turns.

St Govan's Chapel, Pembrokeshire, Wales

St. Govan's Chapel is a small medieval church clinging to the ragged rock halfway down the cliffs of a secluded headland. This is a place I have wanted to visit for a while now and so glad I did. The place is magical!

St. Govan was a sixth century hermit who established a cell for himself on this lonely spot, in the fashion of early Celtic Christian monks, who tended to live in isolated places. Legends sprang up about the saint, and about the curative properties of the natural spring which used to rise just inside the door of the chapel. During the medieval period the holy well and cell became a place of pilgrimage for cripples seeking a cure, and the original cell was rebuilt as a small chapel in the 13th century. The chapel is a very simple rectangular building with a steeply pitched roof and bellcote.

Taken at Newgale, Pembrokeshire, Wales. On my canon 7d quite a while ago but who cares!

30 Years Young - Happy Birthday me!

Or should I start calling myself old now?

Last few weeks have been busy. I turned 30 and spend sometime in England. Visiting my better half's family. Although since I have been back home I have not managed to edit any new photos of my own.  I have been too busy doing editing for other people and I don't show that work without the permission from the photographer who took them.

So I'm resharing an image i shared with the HDR photography group before I left for my little trip.

Never taken a photo indoors and with artificial light before. I think I will have to do some more soon, maybe with some better lighting.

Porthclais, Wales, UK

This is a local spot in which the seals sometimes like to bathe in the sun. Unfortunately none were about so no shots of them this time round but it was very nice to get out with the camera as the last week has been very hard.

It has been long overdue but I have been finally going through my late mothers stuff. It's been hard but some lovely memories have come back to me.

All of this made photography enjoyable, probably the only thing that I did enjoy for some time after my mother passed away.

Being a trained architect I had dreams of moving to London and working for any large architectural firm with the hopes of one day having my own architectural company. This all changed when I lost my mother, I did not want to work so hard like my father did, I never want to have to say what he did to me because he was so busy with work, the words that still upset me to this day "In a minute son". That minute seemed to never come and is the only real memory I have of my father. It took me some time to realise that I could possibly be my own boss and make my living from the hobby that I had came to love, photography.

Knowing my work was not the best in the world and making money from my own images is a pipe dream I decided to invest my inheritance in various form of printing machines to be able to print others peoples photography work at a professional level. With the hope that some day my own photography may become my main source of income but more importantly I would be based from home and be able to give my future children the love and attention they deserve.

So why do I do photography? Because life is precious and I miss my mother and if I could be half the parent she was to me I would be a good father. All the comments and +1's are great, but the hobby I have grown to love and be such a big part of my life that my mother never saw. Would I give it all up to have her see my images and have her opinion? YES!

A special thanks also goes to +Charlene Klassen, +Per Ardne +Heidi Anne Morris, +Stuart Dyckhoff, +Zebulin Magby, +Brian Scott, +Brian Dukes, +Jacqueline Horsfield, +Andy Burke, +Brent Jones, +Paul Cooper, +Louise Burrows, +Jake Gaston, +Robert Rodriguez, all of the eveonline guys (you know who you are) and all of the +UK Photography Community .

So why do I do it all? Because of her below, the best mother in the world.___

Flag of the Fallen

I went to this Church in Ludlow almost 21 years ago on a school trip. This same flag was hanging up then too and I remember being told at the time this was a flag from WW1 and was located here after the war to remember the local people who lost their lives in the trenches and battlefields.

It's the only thing that I can remember from that school trip and even if the story isn't 100% true the memory and thoughts of thanks remain the same.

The Hive - Worcester

It had been a few years since I had last been to Worcester and this building is a new addition I hadn't seen before. It is located right by the river and race course and on the site of old factory building that had been closed for ages, which is nice to see "brown field" sites being used within city boundaries.

The building seems to be multi use holding a library, cafe, local records and an IT area. Which can be used by the community and local students. Which I think is always good use of facilities.

Worcester Cathedral

Taken the day after my grandmothers funeral, although the day wasn't dark and gloomy to everyone but to me it felt like there was a dark shadow over the world that day and this is what I saw through my own eyes.

This is also the first photo I have processed this year and since being ill, took me a while to remember how to use photoshop/lightroom but after a few mistakes I soon remembered my way around.

So glad I am a new owner of a Samsung galaxy s3. Much better than the old HTC DESIRE HD and the latest version of Android. Been on gingerbread for ages.

Think it will take me a little while to get used to the key buttons. They seem a bit more spread out than what I am used to but all in all a good upgrade.

Me happy now. :)

Where have I been?

I have been away from Google+ and I haven't been very active on any social sites or life in general. People close to me will know why but for those who are not my closest friends will not know the reasons behind such a disappearance. So I feel I owe you all some sort of explanation.

Without going into to much details and giving you all a wall of text to read I will try and keep this brief.

The last few years have been life changing and it was all going to fast. Which   eventually took its toll on my health and such I become very ill and needed some time to focus on myself and my family.

It has taken me a lot longer to get back to a point in my life where I feel close to being back to "normal", I still have days where I do not feel great but this is something that will get better with time, since I am well on the way tore... more »

Its nice to be back on my computer doing work and photography again after having several months of not being able to.

All I can say I'm sorry to those I let down, I will be trying my best to catch up with what I have missed and with all of you over the next few days.

Under the Iron Bridge

You know when you visit a modern styled restaurant or hotel and you see them random prints of various objects shot from crazy angles? Well this is my attempt at doing one of those.

The bridge is the first Iron Bridge (the same I posted a few weeks ago). If you look closely you will see that there is a distinct lack of blots and rivets in the majority of the structure.

What have I been doing? Making my website which has been a struggle to say the least. I stopped coding almost 10years ago and that was done in ASP this time I learnt some PHP and did it that way.

I am quite happy with the KISS (keep it simple stupid) mentality of the site design and code. Makes it easier for me and allows me to continue to add more to the site as I go.

Warm Reception - Hillbark Hotel, Wirral, Merseyside, England, UK

Last week end my fiancée and I attended a lovely wedding. There was a typical chruch ceremony but this was where the reception was. This lovely period building which has been converted into a hotel was completely booked out by the wedding party and we had the place to ourselves.

Loads of complementary drinks, great food and a live band afterwards. It was a good weekend and I got to meet a load of my fiancée's family that I haven't met before.

A handheld HDR shot processed in photoshop and then I added a painted affect using a Topazlabs plugin. Trying something different and I'd be happy to here peoples thoughts on the post processing.

The First Iron Bridge - Ironbridge Gorge, Telford and Wrekin, England, UK

This is the first iron bridge ever constructed. It doesn't have any bolts or rivets in the original construction or design, as they were not invented at the time of construction and is held together using joins similar to those seen in carpentry.

The bridge opened in 1781 and was used for vehicular traffic up until 1934, when it was designated as an ancient monument. There was also a toll for crossing the bridge that carried on as late as the 1950's even though vehicular access was stopped many years before.

Tips and tricks about photoshop. I do like photoshop :)

The AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER's VIP Circle –– Announcement Post

#CircleSharingForThePeopleAPCVIP

As you all know I emptied all shared circles in order to bring some more freshness and interestingness into them again. Unfortunately I deleted the AP VIP Circle as well in the process (unintentionally of course). So I will start collecting you people into the VIP circle again.

READ the WHOLE post BEFORE you ask for inclusion.

What is the VIP circle?
It is a circle for people that are following me AND my +Photoshop Tutorials page and that wants to learn more about digital photography, editing in Photoshop, lighting set-ups, tips, tricks, tweaks and hacks and so on. On the above mentioned page I will put up posts that are only visible to people in the VIP circle, related to the equally above mentioned topics. In other words, it's a great way to improve your photographic skills and learn more from me and other members of the group.

I will share this circle with everybody on Monday, August 13.

Who can join?
Everybody. You don't need to be particularly good or bad –– as long as you have a profound interest for photography.

What must you do?

As with all my circles, there are no free rides. Here are the rules (steps you must take) to get accepted:

1) –– Add me AND the +Photoshop Tutorials page to your circles.

2) –– Plus AND reshare this post. Why? It's very simple: if you want to get all the goodies and get promoted in the original APC, you must be prepared to promote your fellow photographer as well. Do NOT remove this reshared post from your feed immediately after I have added you to the circle. Doing so will get you banned from all my future circle shares.

3) –– Make sure that you do NOT post a lot of YouTube clips, animated GIF's, blog post teasers etc. in your feed. I don't mind a few reshares of other people's work but you must mainly share your own original work on your page. I want ths VIP circle to be as clean as possible and focus on photography –– not other bling-bling.

4) –– Ask for inclusion in the comments and please state which kind of photography you are into and that you HAVE completed all steps. I will check every feed.

Have something to say about my circles? Wanna know what others gained from being in the circles? Then go here: https://plus.google.com/116219534929662479848/posts/7Evg2rSE2Hv

NOTE! If you see that I have plussed your comment, then you know that I have added you to the circle. I didn't PLUS your comment? Make sure that you have reshared this announcement post and let me know that you did so.

*This announcement post is hash-tagged with #CircleSharingForThePeopleAPCVIP so that you may mute the reshares this post will generate. That way you will avoid seeing multiple copies of this post in your feed and your adrenaline level will stay normal. I will add a new hash-tag for every announcement and circle post in the future. That way you won't miss out on any of the action but still can mute all the duplicate reshares.*

Here is an excellent add-on that will help you to mute the reshares: http://code.google.com/p/nonplus/

Cheers!___Tips and tricks about photoshop. I do like photoshop :)

This is not drinking water - Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

Sometimes I take photos just because of the history which is behind them and these are just that. Within the Bishops palace was this old store located under living quarters and in the 14th century it was used to store food for the Bishops.

Fast forward to the 20th century when US and other allied troops were located around the southern parts of Britain. The 'Bishops Palace' and the nearby country house was base to the troops while they waited for D-Day. The store was used for ammunition, oil and various other flammable materials, kept safe from any rogue bombs released from bombers on their way to or from the natural harbours of Pembroke and Milford haven.

The Old Chapel - Lamphey Bishops Palace, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

On my visit to the Bishops Palace a few days ago I happend to find a small set of stairs that twisted up into the old ruins. So I went up there to see what I could see. This view of the old chapel greeted me at the top of the twisting and narrow stairs.

There wasn't much room for a tripod so I took this hand held HDR shot. Now looking at the image I think I should have leaned over to the right a bit more to get the chapel more central in the natural framing of stone walls. Any one have any thoughts on this?
