Read Cyber0Pardon me for the delay of this circle. I'm going to be very busy until next week, and starting... now. Lol, really. I guess things will go back as they were by early December hopefully. :D Well great people, if you want to get included, just simply follow these steps :)1. Share this circle publicly/or in a community (and no 'playing games', a'ight?)  Note: If you're sharing this circle with a page or another profile (a page which is intended only for sharing circles), I will only include you, not the page.2. It's optional but after you share the circle,  you may comment and +1 to make sure you will be included. And make it sure it's in the original post so i can easily see you :-)  3. If you're included already, just keep sharing the circle! Because that would be great ... and awesome. (and also because this is a snowball circle)  4. If you're a blue head (no profile picture) , please, ""have a face"" :-) So if i missed you, i'm sorry, it's my bad! And it would be appreciated and an honor to be called an idiot, i mean really.... :-DAnother Note: If you got excluded and if you think i made a mistake, just tell me :-)This circle usually rolls on the weekends.#Circle   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #circleoftheday   #shared   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles   #sharedcircleoftheday   #sharing   #sharingcircles   #sharingiscaring   #sharingmeansthankyou   #add   #addcircle   #addpeople2014-12-03 02:33:30501000

What Artificial Intelligence Is Not

The general public seems to view AI as the mythical purple unicorn of technology; Elusive, powerful, mysterious, dangerous and most likely made up. And while there is plenty of debate in the scientific community, I can at least tell you what AI is definitely not.

First of all, AI is nothing to be frightened of. It’s not a sentient being like SkyNet or an evil red light bulb like HAL. Fundamentally, AI is nothing more than a computer program smart enough to accomplish tasks that typically require human quality analysis. That’s it, not a mechanized, omnipresent war machine.

Young Grandmasters Try to Make Chess Cool

Fabiano Caruana is a chess champion all but made for the age of social media.

In August, on the eve of the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, the most competitive chess tournament ever played on American soil, he took the Ice Bucket Challenge. Sitting at a chess table, playing white, he moved out his pawn and was promptly doused from above, the icy water drenching his T-shirt. Videos were posted to YouTube and collected 30,000 views. He went on to win seven straight matches against the best players in the world, a nearly impossible feat that some chess historians equated with Bobby Fischer’s 20-game streak in the early 1970s.

Canadian breakthrough in quest to unlock DNA secrets

Like a powerful search engine that mines the Internet for answers, the new computational system combs the human genome for meaningful mutations. Google Inc., along with a slew of other companies, has already come calling – raising questions around what could, or should, happen with a publicly funded technology likely to be in big demand in a growing world of Big Data.

The technology may ultimately transform medical research by pointing the way to the genetic roots of any number of diseases. But not just diseases. The system, which has been named SPANR (short for “splicing-based analysis of variants” and pronounced “spanner”), could also be used to identify traits that make people healthier, smarter, even happier.

Crows are smarter than you think

Crows have long been heralded for their high intelligence -- they can remember faces, use tools and communicate in sophisticated ways. But a newly published study finds crows also have the brain power to solve higher-order, relational-matching tasks, and they can do so spontaneously. That means crows join humans, apes and monkeys in exhibiting advanced relational thinking, according to the research.

Specific oxidation regulates cellular functions

For a long time, hydrogen peroxide has been considered as a dangerous metabolite that can damage cells through oxidation. This, however, is not its only role in the cell. Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center have now discovered how it also transmits specific signals: Enzymes called peroxiredoxins catch the free hydrogen peroxide molecules and use them to specifically oxidize other proteins. Hydrogen peroxide thus regulates, for example, the activity of an inflammation-promoting transcription factor and hence controls important cellular functions.

Substance from broccoli can moderate defects of accelerated aging

Children who suffer from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome age prematurely due to a defective protein in their cells. Scientists at Technische Universität München have now identified another important pathological factor: the system responsible for removing cellular debris and for breaking down defective proteins operates at lower levels in HGPS cells than in normal cells. The researchers have succeeded in reactivating protein breakdown in HGPS cells and thus reducing disease-related defects by using a substance from broccoli.

People trust typical-looking faces most

Being 'average' is often considered a bad thing, but new research suggests that averageness wins when people assess the trustworthiness of a face. The research indicates that, while typical-looking faces aren't seen as the most attractive, they are considered to be the most trustworthy.

People may inherit 'gut' bacteria that cause Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis

A new study by an international team of researchers shows for the first time that people may inherit some of the intestinal bacteria that cause Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively know as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study, recently published in Genome Medicine, also confirmed that antibiotics could worsen the imbalance in the gut microbes.

One of the most difficult challenges in weight loss is keeping the weight off over the long term

A new report combining perspectives from a range of obesity experts identifies genetic, epigenetic and neuro-hormonal differences between individuals as one of the key challenges associated with weight loss and long-term weight control. The authors, led by Paul MacLean, PhD, and Rena Wing, PhD, reinforce that maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a major challenge. They recommend a number of novel approaches to improve obesity therapeutics, including more emphasis on an individualized approach to weight-loss treatments and maintenance, and the integration of physiology and behavioral psychology to identify effective and sustainable interventions.

Evidence of Viking/Norse metalworking in Arctic Canada - nearly 500 years before Columbus landed in the Americas

A small stone container found by archaeologists a half-century ago has now been recognized as further evidence of a Viking or Medieval Norse presence in Arctic Canada during the centuries around 1000 A.D. Researchers reporting in the journal Geoarchaeology discovered that the interior of the container, which was found at an archaeological site on southern Baffin Island, contains fragments of bronze as well as small spherules of glass that form when rock is heated to high temperatures.

A Game Designer Explains the Counterintuitive Secret to Fun

At WIRED by Design, Bogost outlined his conception of fun. It’s not about effortless enjoyment, he argues, but instead about embracing the effort demanded in a given situation. If you’re mowing your lawn, you don’t make it fun by strapping an iPad to your lawnmower. Instead, you make it fun by taking the job seriously—you see how few rows you can take to cover the whole yard, how tightly you can make the turns.

“Fun is giving respect to something that doesn’t deserve it,” Bogost says. “Becoming infatuated with something for which infatuation seems impossible.” If you’re unconvinced, just think about golf. It’s a ridiculous premise and the source of untold frustration. And yet, after all these centuries, we’re still going back to the links.

Discovery may hold clues to treatments that slow aging

The Joslin team looked at how treatments known to boost longevity in the one-millimeter long C. elegans (including calorie restriction and treatment with the drug rapamycin) affected the expression of genes that produce collagen and other proteins that make up the extra-cellular matrix (ECM), the framework of scaffolding that supports tissues, organs and bones.

"Any longevity intervention that we looked at, whether genetic or nutritional or drugs, increased expression of collagen and other ECM genes, and enhanced ECM remodeling," says T. Keith Blackwell, M.D., Ph.D., senior and co-corresponding author on the paper. "If you interfere with this expression, you interfere with the lifespan extension. And if you over-express some of these genes, the worm actually lives a little bit longer."

They are paying a private lab to breed mice that carry bits of their own tumors so treatments can be tried first on the customized rodents. The idea is to see which drugs might work best on a specific person's specific cancer.

Tech’s push to “disrupt” workers is a legal & social timebomb

Transforming toilet cleaners into contractors is one example of how the tech industry is shaking up the labor market. But more broadly, Handy’s unusual arrangement also embodies a Silicon Valley ethos that tech boosters like to call “disruption,” and that detractors call “regulatory arbitrage.”

The basic idea is that a startup takes a run at a regulated industry and tries to break it with the help of cool tech and a big pot of venture capital dollars. If regulators object to its business model, the company often deploys a PR charm offensive to portray its would-be overseers as anti-progress — and to dissuade them from enforcing laws until the startup is too big or too popular to be stopped.

With 3D Printing, Medical Devices Are Cool Again

3D printing technology has been used to create everything from knee cartilage to new drugs for treating cancer. A fully-functioning liver is expected in a few years. Or as the New Yorker put it recently: It is now possible to “print thyself.”

Perfecting the process of bioprinting human organs and bones, and engineering DNA scaffolding from which to develop precise medicinal compounds is a focus for universities, private labs, and venture-funded startups alike, and for good reason. We can even print metal as of today; we’re no longer limited strictly to polymers.

The Strength Of A Transparent Startup

When it comes to making a choice between radical openness and “closedness” as a business philosophy, the best time to choose is in the early months of your company. A company that starts out with a closed paradigm and later chooses to open up will have a tough time rerouting company culture and also runs the risk of losing ground to more open competitors early on.

Fat cells reprogrammed to increase fat burning

White adipose tissue stores excess calories as fat that can be released for use in other organs during fasting. Mammals also have small amounts of brown adipose tissue, which primarily acts as an effective fat burner for the production of heat. Now researchers from the University of Southern Denmark have uncovered the mechanism by which white fat cells from humans gets reprogrammed to become browner.

Yes, many believe the whole point of bitcoin is to separate money from the governments of the world. But bitcoin also seeks to create an open payment network anyone can use without jumping through the hoops that encumber, say, credit card or international money transfer networks, and Angel thinks the government can help accomplish such a thing. He is among those who believe the really powerful idea is bitcoin as a payment system, rather than bitcoin as a currency.

Early identification of modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline

Signs of cognitive decline related to aging populations, and even the severe cognitive losses seen in Alzheimer's disease and neurodegenerative disorders, may emerge many years earlier, according to a report presented today at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology annual meeting in Phoenix (Arizona). The study suggests that early signs of cognitive decline are already present for some individuals during midlife, and that they are linked with risk factors such as elevated blood pressure. It is possible that if these risk factors are identified and modified early on, it will be possible to help detect and prevent the progression of cognitive deficits later in life.

They found that the cumulative exposure to some of these risk factors, including clinical subthreshold (that is, within the normal range), but elevated, blood pressure, and low physical activity over the 25 years of the study was associated with worse cognitive performance in midlife, based on tests such as the Stroop Interference Score, the Digit Symbol Substitution Test and the Rey Auditory Verbal learning Test.___

Study establishes connection between gut microbiota and Parkinson's disease

"Our most important observation was that patients with Parkinson's have much less bacteria from the Prevotellaceae family; unlike the control group, practically no one in the patient group had a large quantity of bacteria from this family," states DMSc Filip Scheperjans, neurologist at the Neurology Clinic of the Helsinki University Hospital (HUCH).

The researchers have not yet determined what the lack of Prevotellaceae bacteria in Parkinson's sufferers means – do these bacteria perhaps have a property which protects their host from the disease? Or does this discovery merely indicate that intestinal dysfunction is part of the pathology? "It's an interesting question which we are trying to answer," Sheperjans says.

Sleep-related breathing problems and chronic lack of sleep may each double the risk of a child becoming obese by age 15, according to new research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The good news is that both sleep problems can be corrected. The study, which followed nearly 2,000 children for 15 years, published online today in The Journal of Pediatrics.

Scientific Peer Review Is Broken. We’re Fighting to Fix It With Anonymity

The problem is that today’s peer review is a broken process. Too often, errors slip through, and they can go uncorrected for years. Even if they are eventually exposed, that’s often long after other researchers or clinical trials have relied upon them.

This not only wastes taxpayers’ money (consider the fact that the National Institute of Health gave out $30 billion in research funding last year), but it rots the very foundation of scientific research, which builds on existing work. If today’s basic cancer research turns out to be mistaken, what does that mean for those enrolled in tomorrow’s clinical trial? This is not a hypothetical problem.

BitTorrent Opens Alpha For Maelstrom, Its New, Distributed, Torrent-Based Web Browser

BitTorrent, the peer-to-peer file sharing company, is today opening an alpha test for its latest stab at disrupting — or at least getting people to rethink — how users interact with each other and with content over the Internet. Project Maelstrom is BitTorrent’s take on the web browser: doing away with centralised servers, web content is instead shared through torrents on a distributed network.
