So I try not to look in on my IRA too much, but of the couple dozen tech stocks I own (and I invest exclusively in tech stocks), $MSFT is the only one with significant gains.
How about that?

JJ Abram's biggest selling point for doing the Star Trek franchise the series of injustices he's done is taht he's made the dense Sci Fi "accessible."
Turns out, not so much.

And while I'm an a hate-on-JJ Abrams kick, check out the #1 review on IMDB for a "smash hit" he produced, The Suburbans, starring an actor and actress I actually like, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Will Ferrell.

Worst movie Ed Burns never made
I actually turned this movie off after an hour, when my wife suggested, "Maybe Oprah has something interesting on." No amount of booze could make this movie tolerable. I'm not sure what algorithm Netflix is using to suggest this film to me, but they need to hire some new mathematicians.
Ben Stiller proves yet again he is a one-trick-pony here. Jennifer Love is...Jennifer Love. Will Ferrell -- god help me -- is under-utilized. Decent enough premise. Perhaps different editing could have helped? Maybe some T&A? If not, less adult-oriented humor so I could have... more »

I made a blog about the new Star Trek movie, which turned into a few cultural observations and I wanted to share it:
You are officially mildly spoiled if you read below, NO COMPLAINTS!
Up front I will say I enjoyed this latest Star Trek movie a lot. It was super noisy, but enjoyable, beautifully executed, and I particularly like some of the secondary characters, Spock was excellent, etc etc. I just want to share an observation that stuck with me:
Where are the women? The strong women? The women we’d like to see in 200 years? Where are they in this world? They certainly aren’t around the roundtable when the Starfleet are learning about Khan (there might have been one in that scene, if so that extra was not cut to in any significant manner to be notable.) In the scene where Kirk gets his ship back and the admiral is having a meeting with “important” people around ... more »

My *Star Trek "Into Darkness" Review (Danger SPOILERS)*
Because nobody on Google+ matches my Trekkie cred, its only right that I let you know how I feel about the latest Star Trek movie, from a lifelong Trekkie point of view. If you don't want the movie spoiled, then don't read below the fold, its that simple. Do not gripe at me after the fact for not reading the headline. Nobody can give a decent review without mentioning the damn movie, so here goes.
Ready?
If you are like me, someone who supported the original timeline and story line behind TOS and TNG, then this movie is not for you.
The movie is a lazy attempt to rewrite the story of Khan, and frankly it fails miserably. If you are not a Trekkie, and know nothing about the legend of Khan, or the supporting "Wrath of Khan" movie, (the best of the genre) then you probab... more »

Who do I report the new Google + bugs to?
I'm at IO, btw, so I can show them to a developer directly.
All issues exist on Chromebooks (Pixel and that $250 Samsung one).
1) Phone Calls. I route all my calls through Google Voice, and most of the time take them as voice calls on my Chromebooks. Now I get two phones ringing at once - the "Hangout" App (which used to be GTalk, I assume), and in GMail. The problem is that there's no button to pick up the call in the Hangout app, and when I do it in GTalk, the Hangout keeps ringing.
2) Plus Bar. San Francisco's jicky ass internet means slow WiFi everywhere. When I'm on WiFi, the Plus Bar seems so top heavy it never loads. Even on fast connections, there seems to be issues getting it to load in GMail (it shows up, but clicking it leads to infinite load times).

For what it's worth, I'm getting my money out of MT Gox for the moment.. Keeping it in Bitcoin, but moving it to alternative markets and wallets while this Homeland Security issue works itself out.
What's going on? We'll be reporting more on this story tomorrow, but the bottom line is that HSA seized a portion of MT Gox's assets held on American shores, and the strongest analysis puts the cause at the feet of this Coinlab lawsuit for $45 million.
Expect smart money to buy BTC as it falls, buoying the price, but also expect to see capital leave MT Gox in the form of BTC and move to other markets (possibly even in person transacting).

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse. At the time I didn’t think much about it. But my voice never fully recovered. So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis. This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly. Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold. It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.
While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord. But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.
Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself... more »

People who leave comments on gamer blogs are the worst kind of entitled asshole in the world, more so than YouTube commenters.
This is every comment ever on game blogs: "This awesome device I bought for almost nothing that transports me to rich other-worldly dimensions? It's total shit because it lacks/has this one little feature/bug, and everyone involved with it's creation deserves a painful death and unpleasant afterlife."

+Iris Hopkins and I are spring cleaning today. I was cleaning out my old laptop bags, and pulled this out.
I said, "oh, this brings back memories."
"What's that, an old girlfriend's phone number?" she asked.
"Close," I replied. "It's your address I wrote down so I could pick you up on our first date."

Without looking up from her sudoku book, she said "Because we don't have guns."

As most proponents of BTC would say, it's likely impossible for PayPal to stay out of the market for virtual currencies...although in a big way the company has been a big motivator for needing one. So it's a weird sort of dissonance wondering about what niche the world's most watched Internet payment company will take if Bitcoin does indeed "join PayPal's funding instrument."

Markets are active today. Detractors to Bitcoin are strangely silent again.
BTC is at $141, which IMO is slightly over valued. I've not run my log chart analysis since last week, so don't hold me to this prediction, but I think actual value is probably somewhere between $60-90.

If you look at the BlockChain and you look at the time period during the run up in price and subsequent fall off in price, and you track the the "volume of transactions excluding popular addresses" – that’s the chart you’re looking for – you can see how much money changed hands within the general populace during the run up and the crash.
It was up despite the fact that the price collapsed by about $200 over the course of several days. Transactions had never been higher. More money changed hands independent of the markets than ever before.
That says to me a number of things. For one, transactions are going to go up when the price of Bitcoin goes down slightly. But the curves indicated there was more money changing hands, more high value transactions being done, and therefore a lot of grassroots use of Bitcoin.
That validates for me that what "Drea... more »

And now the news: Here's what we DON'T know at this hour
I often tell my students that where they see a problem, they should find the opportunity. Well, we’ve been told over and over this weekend that we had a big problem with misinformation after the Boston Marathon bombing. Breaking news, haven’t you heard, is broken.
So I see an opportunity, a big journalistic opportunity. I also tell my students this:
* Journalism should add value to a flow of information that can now occur without media’s mediation — verifying facts, vetting witnesses, debunking rumors, adding context, adding explanation, and most of all asking and answering the questions that aren’t in the flow, that aren’t being asked, i.e., reporting. Let’s acknowledge reality: There’s no stopping or fixing that flow. What witnesses see will be shared for all to see, which is good, along with rumo... more »
