Sunrise Over The Tellico River

Last month a small group of photographers got together for a photowalk around the Tellico River at the Baby Falls Picnic Area.  We started our day around 9am and that created a slight challenge in regards to the harsh sunlight we had that day.

To start the day off, I shot directly into the sun using a small aperture.  This created a blown-out image of the sun reflecting off the river and the starburst effect.

To find out more about aperture and how to create a starburst effect check out these links:

Smoky Mountain Dogwood

Originally posted on: http://www.banakasdesigns.com/2013/05/15/smoky-mountain-dogwood

One of the many perks of living in East Tennessee is the quick and easy access to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park. One day after a full day of work, my wife and kids picked me up from work and we all decided to head to The Smokies.

We arrived in the Cades Cove area of the park just in time to see the beginning of the of the dogwood blossoms. Some trees were fuller than others, and others had not even started to bloom.

While walking back from the John Oliver cabin, I spotted this one dogwood in what looked like a sea of green. The contrast between the background and the white of the dogwood caught my eye and I knew that with using my zoom lens, I would be able to compress everything together.

Purple Dead Nettle

I was out in my yard a few weeks ago with my camera and my Nikon 55-200mm DX Zoom lens taking photos of birds and the blossoms of the Bradford Pear trees. After I had lost the light that I was trying to capture with the blossoms, I decided to get very low and capture the yard from a different angle.

Through most of the winter, my yard never turned brown, due to the Purple Dead Nettle. I’m going to call them weeds, but others have been known to use them in smoothies (due to being highly nutritious, full of iron, vitamins, and fiber). These weeds have blanketed my front yard and most of my back yard and have survived our crazy winter. Soon they will be dying to make room for the dandelions and other weeds that over take my yard, so I decided today I would try to capture them in a different way.

They actually look nice from down here.

The Ephraim Bales Place on the Roaring Fork Motor Trail in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park

Just beyond the Jim Bales house is a 70-acre plot that belonged to Ephraim and Minerva Bales. 30 acres of that property was used for farming and the other 40 acres, mostly wooded land was used for construction materials and firewood.

The cabin that you see here is a double cabin with a passageway known as a “dog trot”. Dog-trot cabins were common throughout the southeastern US and usually involve two cabins sharing one roof. The space between the two cabins stays relatively cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it an ideal spot for dogs. Both halves of the cabin have their own chimney.

In addition to the cabin displayed in this image, nearby you can find the Bales’ corn crib, hog pen, and barn.

I've noticed that if your screen is big enough to support 3 columns, you should change the size of your browser to show only 2 columns.  The images are much larger using 2 columns.

Smoky Mountain Rainbow

Sometimes it's best to let things play out instead of stressing about it.

At the end of the weekend, I was in a hurry to get home and get my kids ready for bed and for school the next day.  However, there were other plans that I didn't know about and I was getting frustrated that I was running behind schedule.  Had I continued to rush everyone I would have missed this beautiful shot of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Crane at Concord Park

After hanging out with horses in the morning, thanks to my son’s Pre-K 3 field trip to the Gypsy River Valley Ranch, I ended up heading over to the Concord Park for a little bit. I saw this guy hanging out by the water and I wanted to see how close I could get, without him flying off. I didn’t get too close, cause I was just having a good time getting shots like this one of him.

ATTENTION Photographers...

I have a question for you! This question is not for the wedding photographers out there, but for those that shoot landscapes and nature shots.

Are you set up to sell your images online? If so, is it profitable for you? Do you personally know your buyers? What service do you use? Are you happy with their service?

Do you have people who you’ve shown your images to, and they’ve suggested that you sell your prints? Did they turn around and buy, after you’ve set up your sales mechanism?

I’m curious to hear what you have to say about this interesting topic.
