Full update.

This is one of my favourite garden birds, unassuming and rather timidly it gets on with it's own business keeping well clear of the more raucous or flamboyant visitors.

Chaffinch

The chaffinch might be Britain's second most common bird (first is the wren) but I only have the one male coming to my garden. I have green and goldfinches to throw at dogs and at least two of the less colourful female chaffinches visiting.

This bird has been teasing me for a month always in the wrong place or too quick for me to shoot. I finally caught him just before Christmas. I'm still on the lookout for a wren.

Bird area
I'm the first to admit that I'm not a real bird photographer, I don't go out in the wild crouching behind bushes or race off around the country after a rare sighting.

I'm a lazy photographer, I just wander down the garden, top up the seed feeders and bird bath, scatter some food on the table and retreat into the hide to see what happens.

The 'set' pictured here evolves as I acquire new props or decide on a change after hours of watching flight paths and general bird behavior.

This section of the garden is a paved area of about 20 foot square and is a general work area of the garden where the shed, garden tools and compost bins are sited. All the small trees and shrubs are in pots which makes it easy to move things around.

Interested in being published for charity? Read this

A bit of a background. Few years ago like most of you I was very active on Flickr. The community was great there and we got together several times and published our own magazine, and a few books focused on photography. Below is a sample of that effort. I had my photos in there, so did +Thomas Hawk , +Ingo Meckmann , +Jerry Lorengo , +Jeremy Brooks and many others. We also wrote articles, interviews, etc.

We never did it for profit. The main goal was to see each other's work in print, which is a whole different experience than seeing it on a monitor. As a result, I still have those books and memories. Loved the result of those efforts.

Who's interested in doing this again? I'm happy to lead the effort as I did in the past, as long as there are those who are willing to participate in the project. ... more »

On one of the shortest days of the year it was rainy, windy and dark, and this goldfinch looked rather bedraggled. It certainly didn't seem inclined to sing.

Seasonal Robin

Also for +Fabian Black who asked for a seasonal robin. I took this shot on Sunday, so it was captured in the season even if the weather did not provide any snow. Ill have to wait a bit longer for a Christmas card robin shot.
