Google+ Communities
It was really cool when I received my invite to Google+ and I found that many of the people on G+ were also from the Tech sphere (during the beta). I immediately jumped into Hangouts with other hyper-enthusiasts, those who work and play, eat, sleep, and breathe the same interest topic from all over the world. Hangouts like these are particularly enchanting and fun, yet informative and educational. Sharing new ideas and working together with like-minded people is what I love most about Google+. Because Hangouts are borderless and personal, they can stretch your horizons further than a typical local meetup/user group. Google+ Communities are an awesome step forward for Google+ and Hangouts, thank you Google! This is exactly what I've always wanted from Google+ Wow!

Check your Google+ "Best Friends"

UPDATE: API CALLS ALMOST USED, WILL STOP WORKING VERY SOOON :D

Useless & experimental but maybe a little bit fun new site for some Plussers :)

Check who have been giving +1s / comments / shares to your last 100 public posts most actively.

1) Load site: http://www.googleplussuomi.com/mybestfriends/?googleid=110479310742964256734 with your own GoogleID

2) Wait , wait , wait ... first load ever is slow. Refresh the page and you should see your 100 most active Google+ friends . It is again using my super secret algorithms , meaning my codes gives little higher value for comments and shares than +1's .

And as always, it will work as long as my daily API limit is used :)

I just read an article declaring SEO dead.

Perhaps a little too early to call. But you can't cheat Google forever. Cheating Google is like cheating at a game of video poker. You can't -- they own all of the data.

Manipulating search rankings is cheating Google out of ad revenue. It's in Google's best interest to protect their ads. And they can, because they have all of the data.

Google's recent Privacy Policy update allows them to share data between products including Google Search.

Here are three places where Google could share data to improve signal quality. By the way, I have no confirmation if they do use data in the way I suggest, but if they don't maybe they should start.

Google Analytics
Let's say Site A makes a link to Site B. Analytics could pick up on the fact that nobody actually clicks on that link... more »

What if ads actually worked?
Sometimes ads are entertaining, but most of the time they're just annoying, meaningless, get in the way, and clutter up life. They work sometimes, but not in an optimal way.

What if ads actually worked all the time? Imagine one ad that followed you from place to place: on your phone, wrist watch, augmented reality glasses, and in-store screens. This ad knows you so perfectly that you may actually respond to it on the first impression.

How it would work:
The ad network determines when you're ready to buy.
It only displays your one ad when you are ready to make your decision. It gets out of the way most of the time, but at a time when it can influence you the most, boom, there it is. It keeps track of where you are and what you're doing so that it can reach you at the right moment.

The ad... more »

Could a future MacBook Air actually be powered by Air?

Fascinating new battery tech via ArsTechnica:

"Lithium-air batteries have the potential to be the next big leap in battery tech because they get rid of a lot of the weight and complexity involved with standard batteries. That's because, instead of having all the battery components stored inside the battery itself, lithium-air batteries use oxygen in the atmosphere to bring some electrons to the party. There has been some progress in terms of getting air into the battery and having the oxygen react once it gets there, but the technology still faces a significant challenge: reactive oxygen tends to also react with the battery's components.

The result of these reactions is that existing lithium-air batteries can typically only handle a handful of charge/discharge cycles before they start to decay. But... more »

Why do we have static icons in iOS?
If I can be an Apple apologist for a minute, there are some really good reasons why icons in iOS are static. I wanted to briefly explain three reasons (speed, security, and aesthetics) why we haven't seen updatable or animated icons yet.

Speed
The first iPhone was designed 5 to 10 years ago. Smart phone hardware has changed a lot since that time. Smart phones had only a few hundred megahertz processors, and very little RAM. Apple used some of the very same techniques early PC programmers used on PCs on the iPhone to speed things up. Things like aggressive caching and memory management. For example, in a scrolling table list they re-use an off-screen table item rather than allocating a new one in memory. Scrolling screenfuls of data is hard, especially fluid scrolling. Cashing the icons first before scrolling is an answer Apple went... more »
