Here is a good #latinlolcat for summertime: Sedendo et quiescendo anima efficitur sapiens - By sitting and resting, the soul is made wise.
The phrase ultimately goes back to Aristotle and is especially associated with Dante's Belacqua: http://www.samuelbeckett.it/?page_id=391

Is Liberalism Dead? Again?
Because the words have been bandied about the last five or six years without any attempt at defining what we mean, this author at least defines his terms (in an entertaining way). I had not really understood what a "technocratic liberal worldview" is, now I do!
Here are some good points:
"The decay of liberal reform traditions has been nothing to celebrate. Real wages have stagnated, indebtedness is on the rise, and the deregulatory “free market” revolution has not only fostered massive new disparities in wealth and power but a historic recession. If liberalism once had teeth, that memory has faded."
"By acquiescing in the conservative consensus on welfare entitlements (largely transformed into “workfare” by President Clinton in 1996) and attacks on teachers disguised as education “reform” (... more »

Understanding Stakeholder Theory
I particularly like this insight, "In the end, having the right operating system for business requires that we come to terms with the two competing views of fairness we wrestle with as a society. Our egalitarian notion of fairness says we each have intrinsic worth and dignity that must be protected, while our libertarian notion of fairness tells us effort matters and that we should be better compensated when we work harder or take more risk than others."

Gridlock For Its Own Sake: Creating a War Against . . . America
Jim DeMint's (R) comment made it clear – very clear – two years ago.
”Our goal is a complete gridlock for the next two years. There is no place for bi-partisanship, compromise, only acceptable outcome is total victory and any politician that disagrees will be treated as a traitor. This is war."
DeMint dumped his voters - quit in the middle of his term ... but the GOP is still singing his tune ..
.. another republican war .... this time on America ....

Under the Heading of, Be Careful What You Wish For
So many people wanted the wars to end and Guantanamo closed. President Obama wants to go much further, put an end to the endless war on "terrorists." (It's like having a war on "evil.")
Ain't nobody gonna win that war and it's sucking us into more and more crazy situations.
"President Obama is saying it might be time to start downsizing the 'war on terror,' he is leading the national debate beyond where even most Democrats have dared to go."

Did You Know About This? 385 BILLION DOLLARS !
I sure didn't!
"Outside the United States, the Pentagon controls a collection of military bases unprecedented in history."
"The Pentagon has dispersed around $385 billion to private companies for work done outside the US since late 2001, mainly in that baseworld. That’s nearly double the entire State Department budget over the same period, and because Pentagon and government accounting practices are so poor, the true total may be significantly higher."

Justice makes no claim on love .
Although many keep insisting that President Obama has not discussed the moral issues surrounding drones, he has actually been discussing it for quite a while. He has some Solomonic decisions to make and I'm afraid I don't even have an opinion on the subject yet because the entire area is so fraught with contradictions and paradoxes.
This article explores those contradictions pretty well: it ends on the note that–no matter what else happens legally–it is essential that we have transparency after the fact . On that I can agree: a sovereign people cannot demand any less if it is allowing these things to take place in our name.
Some good points:
"For the same reason that drone warfare stands to make violence easier to deploy — none of our lives are on the line — it also makes violence harder to rationalize. ... more »

"The party on the brink of destroying the Voting Rights Act reminds us that Republicans were really the great civil-rights leaders all along."
"When you start talking about race and the Republican Party, Republicans tend to say the following things. First, they tell you that most Republicans are not bigots (true) and that Democrats can be bigots, too (also true). Then you’re reminded that during the decades when southern segregationists made their home in the Democratic Party, Republicans were instrumental in founding the NAACP, in 1909; a Republican chief justice (Earl Warren) presided over Brown v. Board of Education, in 1954; a Republican president (Eisenhower) called in troops to desegregate Little Rock’s schools, in 1957; and another Republican president (Nixon) created the first federal affirmative-action program with teeth. (All true.)

I've Tried to Stay Out of This Subject
Because it seems unsolvable. But:
"The process requires energy, which is provided by burning fossil fuels. The result is that ... significantly more carbon dioxide enters the air than for every barrel of ordinary crude—between twelve and twenty-three per cent more."
Tell me how this makes sense?

Why Do We 'Look Up' to Celebrities ?
Makes no sense to me.
"Why do we worship celebrities like Mark Zuckerberg, Sean Parker, and Martha Stewart? "Our age is lousy with celebrities. They can be found in every sector of society, including ones that seem less than glamorous," writes George Packer. "There is a quality of self-invention to their rise: Mark Zuckerberg went from awkward geek to the subject of a Hollywood hit; Shawn Carter turned into Jay-Z; Martha Kostyra became Martha Stewart, and then Martha Stewart Living. The person evolves into a persona, then a brand, then an empire, with the business imperative of grow or die — a process of expansion and commodification that transgresses boundaries by substituting celebrity for institutions. Instead of robust public education, we have Mr. Zuckerberg’s 'rescue' of Newark’s schools. Inste... more »

When Even the Pentagon Prefers a Salacious Story to The Facts
A judge in the military points out that we do not have the facts about just how much sexual harassment is going on in the military. She cannot believe that even The Pentagon runs with stories that may be completely misleading.

What Is An Internship? Indentured Servitude
First we make our kids get into so much student debt that they might ruin their lives even if they graduate magna cum laude , then their first job isn't a job at all! We let our best minds work for free and call it an opportunity.
Internships are exploitation. And we must stop it!
It also creates an unintended consequence: those with less money, often minorities, cannot join the club. This re-segregates large portions of the (pun intended) white collar class.

Hmm. This is news? The Right is taking things to extremes?
;')
"There's been no finding of criminal activity in the Obama administration, and the FBI's opening of a criminal investigation of the IRS should lay to rest accusations that the administration has failed to take the matter seriously."
I wonder how many more times we'll have to deal with this while real news goes unreported.
Did YOU know there was a shooting in New Jersey on Mother's Day? 19 people were shot.
I didn't either.
Bigger question: Do you know who owns the news' organs?
I don't either.

The IRS story is likewise looking less and less like a scandal .
"The IRS didn’t so much single out conservative groups as conservative groups singled themselves out by applying en masse for tax-exempt status: “So the crime here had nothing to do with 'targeting' conservatives. The targeting was effectively done by the conservative groups themselves.”
"One could no less persuasively lump them into the “narrative” of government employees making good-faith efforts to undertake difficult judgments in the face of implacable partisan opposition exploiting raging paranoia."
I'm looking forward to the day when we think more about the future of our nation and less about partisan anything. I do not think it is unrelated that a quarter of our citizens are dropping out of HIGH SCHOOL that politicians can make "scandals" out of pretty much... more »

What DO you do when the unconventional opinion is . . . wrong ?
Good question! Chris Guillebeau is one of my favorite bloggers because he is a "can do" kind of person! He decided that he wanted to travel to every country in the world. And he DID IT!!!!!
This is a piece on the theme of what happens when you find out facts that turn out to go against what everyone around you is saying: Chris discovered that Portland's youth have twice the cavities of Seattle's. Why? Because their water is not fluoridated.
"When I’m not roaming the world, I live in Portland, Oregon, land of strong coffee and tall bikes.

Having Second Thoughts About Parody
In a thread last week that discussed what I thought was a very funny presentation at this year's Correspondent's Dinner (President Obama at 2013 White House Correspondents' Dinner (C-SPAN)), I had to explain to someone that it was all supposed to be funny. President Obama did not wear a wig, for example (except of course, he did in what I thought was a pretty funny ribbing of Mrs. Obama's new hairdo). It was not clear to this person which was real, which was the parody.
If you watch much Jon Stewart (I've taken a break recently), you can start feeling that EVERYTHING is cynical.
In this piece from The New Republic, a very good argument is made against satire, here are some excerpts:
"Juicing an already true-enough premise with more unbelievability simply adds to the informational noise po... more »

C'mon President Obama! Be Stupid Like President Clinton With Lewinsky !
Make it easier! The lack of scandals is making it impossible to feed the beast!
"Right-wing media has stoked huge demand for scandal among conservative consumers, but there isn’t a supply. And so, Republicans have had to create them, latching onto mistakes and ambiguities, and magnifying them into epic examples of administration misconduct."...
"Aren’t there responsible Republicans who see this behavior as damaging to the party’s brand? Absolutely, they just have little influence over actual GOP politicians and the voters they represent. For the Republicans who indulge this, there’s not much to lose." ...
"Satisfying conservative demand for Democratic scandals is lucrative business, and it will continue for as long as Barack Obama—or any Democrat—is... more »

Stop wasting money
If you're still using Email as you primary communication tool, watch this, then do a simple calculation... how many minutes did email take up yesterday that could be considered wasteful? Now times that by 5 to get the working week, and then times it by the number of people in your entire organisation, who also use email as their primary method of communication. Now figure out the monetary value of that. Now go talk to the boss about how much money social networking could save his company.
The case for using Social Networking tools is closed. Now work on the culture required to make it work effectively.
I can never share this video enough... :)

The first point of reference.
Whenever one realizes that he's lost and wise enough to admit it, one tries to find his bearings. Another way of saying that, is that one tries to orient itself, place himself into some kind of a context, so that directions become once again clear.
To orient oneself, orientation.
Look at that word... what do you see in it? What other obvious meaning is there to be seen, but never noticed? What first reference point are we searching for when we try to orient ourselves?
Well, it is obvious isn't it... we are searching for the Orient. We are searching for our true East, meaning our deepest roots, the point from where we as individuals, as well as we as humanity come from. And that is always somewhere to the East. History started there. We started there.
East, the place of birth, the place where the first li... more »
