Who doesn't believe in justice, right?
Well, think of the pleasant comfortable lives we all live, and then think of the price others around the world pay for that comfort and convenience. For example, detrimental impacts of pollution on the health and well-being of people in the developing world that produce the materials and services that make our lives comfortable and convenient.
The imbalance between the two general situations I describe above is the crux of environmental injustice.
Let's try to bring things back into balance. Here's how:

Humans definitely LOVE "landscapes"...they are visually appealing to us, which is a key element of being humans...we are visual beings. We see many examples of this in the arts (on Facebook!) with the imagery of beautiful scenery - the colors, the tones, interesting shapes and features....
One of the ways we can sustain these beautiful landscapes is to think of them in a more systems-based way, when we interact with the landscape. This "systems approach" is a fundamental principle of ecology, and there are so many ways we can be smarter about those linkages among the elements of the landscape...
Here is an interesting article about this idea, and maybe you have some thoughts too.

*Tahiti Peacefulness*
The warmth of the air is conveyed by the slight humidity, in Papeete (pä'pē-ā'tā, pə-pē'tē) Tahiti.. With the slight breeze and the clouds passing over, slight rain begins…
The red beaked bird scavenges the inner branches of the hibiscus bush, hopping from branch to branch.
Why anyone would ever want to leave here is beyond me.
The number of sailboats in the natural harbor of Papeete is remarkably high, so many sleeping, bobbing, and listless boats looking up at their audience in the hills above.
So, I awake and walk the beach…looking out at this burgeoning town of (mainly, here) tourists, breakfasting, planning their day, across the Pacific to Moorea (enjoy the video) – I met 2 tourists from New York City, young, nice couple…took a picture of them together, a kind gesture fo... more »

*Keeping Lodging Local*
One of the keys to sustainability is “keeping it local.” In general, ‘keeping it local’ with regard to accommodations minimizes the need to create massively destructive infrastructure to house visitors at a locations, and puts money directly and indirectly back into local communities by supporting their local businesses. It also supports the concept of the host-guest relationship, at a very personal and interesting level.
One great way to keep it local during any trip around the world, anywhere, is to seek out “Bed and Breakfasts, which are really simply people’s homes and so they are naturally locally supplied and operated. We found one such Bed and Breakfast in Taupo, New Zealand (a small town in central North Island, in the hills above Lake Taupo) - you can also Google ‘Bed and Breakfast’ and the name of any town to find many. Many of these Bed a... more »

*Keeping Dining Local*
One of the keys to sustainability is “keeping it local.” In general, ‘keeping it local’ minimizes the input of energy to produce and transport food, increases the likelihood (but doesn’t guarantee, so look/ask!) that minimal preservatives/pesticides were required to produce that food, and puts money back into local communities by supporting local farming and food-producing businesses.
One great way to keep it local during any trip around the world, anywhere, is to seek out farmers markets that are locally supplied and operated. We found one such farmers market in the center of Auckland (a very big city!), down by the harbor area by asking a local–the harbor made for a great place to enjoy a small meal, and enjoy the best view in town. Many of these farmers markets are certified, or awarded for their level of excellence. This farmers market is not u... more »

*Steamy, Smelly, Muddy, but Nice*
The geothermal activity of the Rotorua and Taupo regions of New Zealand provide an interesting view of the cultural connections to the sulphur-smelling, muddy, and steamy surroundings of this area. We spent some time hiking the hills about Taupo, through the ‘Thermal Wonderland’ of Wai O Tapu: Thermal Wonderland of Wai O Tapu
Also, geothermal energy is a major part of New Zealand’s energy conservation approach. Some additional information about their geothermal energy strategy can be found at:

*Whitecaps*
The movement of the sea
From above
A strange slowness
Slow slap of the swells
Against one another...small crescents
Like ice, in that liquid warmth
The South Pacific
Watch one, closely, and wait
Wait
You see it dissipate
Into the deep
The blue
Whitecaps get slowly replaced by clouds
The floating cousins of the sea

A SUSTAINABLE EARTH ADVENTURE TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC: Some understanding of the idyllic and contemporary views of Māori life and culture
In the past few days, we’ve written a bit about cultural diversity, and the positive effects that this diversity has on the integrity of societies and sustainability. But, what about the cultures of the world that have a history of conflict as a result of cultural clashes, particularly when they now reside together in the same land? No nation on this planet is without this type of conflict, if one looks far enough back into its history. New Zealand is a good example of the complexity of these issues, and so we share with you some reflections on this issue, essentially between, chronologically, the Māori and Anglo settlers of this Island. We see a nation coming to grips, to the best of both culture’s abilities, with this complexity – attempting to bring mutual ... more »

A SUSTAINABLE EARTH ADVENTURE TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC (Sept 5-17, 2012): Māori women
From: Ministry of Women’s Affairs (Minitatanga Mō Ngā Wāhine)
Māori women play a significant role in developing and sustaining the cultural, social and economic lives of Māori communities. According to the Time Use Survey they spend more time caring for others in their household and do more voluntary and community work than women from other ethnic groups. Māori women are the driving force behind te kōhanga reo, kura kaupapa Māori and other Māori development initiatives, and have actively contributed to growth and expansion of programmes and services for whānau, hapū and iwi (family, groups of families, and tribes). Often this work has been unpaid.

The World Flows
Do you ever feel like you’ll never have enough time in your lifetime to see the places, things, and people of the world you’d like to see? I feel this way sometimes, it strikes me, especially when I sit somewhere like a restaurant in my current residence, Washington, DC…a very diverse and busy city.
It’s not that I miss being in those other parts of the world per se, it’s really that to have these constant reminders all around me, of the larger world right in front of me, flowing by me, in the faces, hair color/type, eyes, languages (ahhh, the many, many languages you hear in the city), and the other ‘flavors.’ These people (and therefore places, etc.) seem to have come TO me, by way of interesting pathways… to what I currently call my ... more »

A SUSTAINABLE EARTH ADVENTURE TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC: Somewhere over the Pacific
One of the things we all know about is the ocean – the oceans of the world, something we’ve all studied about, talked about, frolicked about in…we know they are vast and they are largely unexplored, below the surface that is. Much of the surface has been plied by humans for years, but still we only really relate to the surface of the oceans by virtue of where the water intersects the land…the shore. But, below the surface, we are aliens.
Just the mere surface of the world’s oceans, that thin meniscus, covers about 71% (139 square miles) of our planet…that’s about 500 times the area of Texas (renowned for being really BIG); about 38 times the area of China (now, that’s truly BIG!), and about 12 times the area of the African Continent, still an unexplored, giant, and amazing land.
