Western Bluebird, Sialia mexicana; Stanford University, California

A couple of months ago, Marilou Aballe posted her first Eastern Bluebird of the season, and I remember thinking that, although we have bluebirds here, I rarely see them -- unfortunately, since they're among our most colorful. And then, a couple weeks later, I went on a walk in the hills behind Stanford, and ... Bluebirds! I went back a bit later, and found this very cooperative model who let me take lots of shots. So this must be Marilou's doing...

Snowy Egrets, Egretta thula; Mountain View, California

I didn't have a good item for Saturday's theme until I visited a local egret rookery today. The egrets remind us that some species think a bad hair day is attractive!

I haven't experienced an egret rookery close up before. Peterson describes the colony call of Snowy Egrets as "a bubbling wulla-wulla-wulla." I would have said gargling rather than bubbling, but who's to quibble? It's certainly distinctive.

Green Hills Butterfly Ranch, Cayo District, Belize

This butterfly ranch raises butterflies and ships them to zoos and other exhibits around the world. The owner was very knowledgeable about conservation issues in Belize, and extremely interesting to listen to. Visit if you get a chance! His hummingbird feeder did distract from the butterflies, though. :-))

Social Flycatcher, Myiozetetes similis; Dangriga, Belize

Yellow-bellied, masked flycatchers were a common sight in Belize -- we saw at least five species, popping up nearly everywhere. There are a couple others in this album already -- the Great Kiskadee and yesterday's Tropical Kingbird.

Montezuma Oropendola, Psarocolius montezuma; Hill Bank Station, Belize

This is another blackbird relative (Icteridae) to go with the Grackle a few days ago. Their song is wonderful. They lift their tails to wind up, and then emit "a few high-pitched thin notes followed by a sound like the crumpling of brittle paper, and ending with an explosive, rich, hollow gurgling sound, which carries a considerable distance." (H. Lee Jones) This one is surrounded by the ratty remains of nests from last year -- the full nest is an elongated teardrop hanging structure, built in groups.

Since others have suggested crows in the "no respect" category, here's a different species, though I found them striking!
... There's another bird here that I can't figure out, second from left. Any ideas? (It's also black and gray -- the B&W conversion doesn't affect the birds.)
I'm not sure what to think of the B&W conversion -- I think it probably needs either more sharpness or much less DoF. Comments welcome.

Our neighborhood hawks decided to have lunch outside my window Saturday. Or one of them did -- the other was sitting a couple of feet away not partaking. I couldn't tell what the prey was -- probably an unlucky bird.
