Google's latest launch of their "Hangouts" chat service has thrown a few spanners in the works for those of us who have been long-time users of the original Google Hangouts.

A huge part of this is confusion over the branding.

Until last week, "Hangouts" meant, specifically, the multi-way video conferencing/collaboration capability. Text-based chat was handled by Google Talk, G+ Messenger, or the local hangout chat window (which was only visible to those in the hangout). The original Hangouts were, largely, self contained sessions independent of anything else.

From now, "Hangouts" means the (primarily) text-based chat client, and the video stuff has been "rebranded" as "Video Chat". The video chat is now integrated as a part of the new Hangout chat services. The key here is that it is "part of", and inseparable... more »

Just who is Tech and Coffee anyway?

  Back in the day, G+ started offering this thing called "Hangouts".  And people were randomly popping in and out of these various rooms that various people were setting up. +George Doscher who worked from home especially liked the interaction with others that Hangouts brought him. By November of 2011, he had established a daily hangout that we all called, Tech and Coffee. Days were spent talking about various Tech over those warm cups of Joe! Suddenly, there were regulars! People who seemed to show up every day for weeks at a time. No longer did we have a place to hangout, but a community of folks from various backgrounds, in and out of the Tech industry, from all over the world who grew to become friends, who helped each troubleshoot tech related issues, who discussed their favorite beers and wines, who respectfully debated world politics andr... more »
