15 Things You Should Know About Caffeine
via +Lava Kafle
There is quite a controversy going on in the psychiatric circles about the inclusion of caffeine withdrawal being included in the DSM V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual)
Roland Griffiths, PhD, professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine states that "What it means is that the phenomenon of caffeine withdrawal is real and that when people don't get their usual dose, they can suffer a range of withdrawal symptoms." http://goo.gl/siAOH
However, I would not count on any insurance companies paying for a doctors visit for withdrawal or treatment.

Fear Tip: Striving to have an open mind along with learning as much as possible about the fear, often decreases the fear. (Along with the anger that sometimes is the by product) Education, education, education.

A Political Post A true failure story and a long one
Today, as I was eating my lunch I saw one of psychiatry's/psychology biggest failures. An in-patient of mine, diagnosed "Chronic Paranoid Schizophrenic" (7 years ago)
J. was standing next to the restaurant door, mumbling, yelling to her voices & guarding what looked like a new bicycle. Clothes filthy, teeth rotten, face tan & wrinkled from living her life on the beach. (Note this woman is in her early 60's)
This patient was not a victim of poor health care. We kept her for over 6 months (no charge), tried multiple medications & her symptoms, slowly but gradually improved. She refused housing at a board & care, she refused a referral to a day program, her paranoia decreased, but her thoughts about taking medication & trust in the health care system did not improve. We sent h... more »

Learning to Live with Chronic Pain
Chronic pain not only affects a patient physically, it can also have pronounced cognitive and emotional effects. Therefore, the psychological ramifications as well as physical discomfort can, at times, be difficult to manage.
Because of chronic pain, people may be subjected to: forgetfulness, difficulties in performing everyday tasks, problems with communicating, and a lowered ability to concentrate. http://goo.gl/ogWA2

If relationships are abusive and you find yourself being submissive accept a portion of this as being your responsibility. As adults, we have a choice. Ask if it is truly worth the pain and suffering to be with someone who is abusive: Someone who is not respecting your self worth. Full article http://goo.gl/mpRBG

Dissociation
Dissociation is a term in psychology describing a wide array of experiences from mild detachment from immediate surroundings to more severe detachment from physical and emotional experience.
It is commonly displayed on a continuum. The major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involves a detachment from reality – rather than a loss of reality. http://goo.gl/IXSsN

A whole field has evolved & centers around debriefing
I have no idea how this one got so out of control? Logic says, of course, not everyone should have or needs a debriefing, but this is not my area of specialty. And, if done, of course, one session is not enough........just the logic in me speaking out. (I know the theories but....)
People benefit most from treatment when it is requested & no one can help someone that doesn't want help in one session. One debriefing session will not help much. Just an IMO based on experience.
I am open to changing this....from anyone that has experience with the concept.

The Disapproval Matrix
by +Ann Friedman
From the authors site.
This is one way to separate hateful comments from productive feedback. Here’s how the quadrants break down:
Critics "These are smart people who know something about your field. They are taking a hard look at your work and are not loving it. You’ll probably want to listen to what they have to say, and make some adjustments to your work based on their thoughtful comments."
Lovers "These people are invested in you and are also giving you negative but rational feedback because they want you to improve. Listen to them, too." You know them.
Frenemies These people really know how to hurt you, because they know you personally or know your work pretty well. But at the end of the day, their criticism is not actually about your work—it... more »

I saw Star Trek Into Darkness yesterday & this image and quote stuck! (Have a fun, safe week-end)
“There's greatness in you. But there's not an ounce of humility. You think that you can't make mistakes, but there's gonna come a moment when you realize you're wrong about that. And you're gonna get yourself and everyone under your command killed.” ---- Christopher Pike - Star Trek Into Darkness
The Health Psychology Perspective
1. Some people are surprised to become conscious of the fact that they are vulnerable to health problems.
2. When a health difficulty strikes, it may be more of a shock to people with low fitness humility.
3. When the self-image has been hurt by a health problem, a little humility can shape the condition in a less distressing light.

B. F. Skinner was an American psychologist, behaviorist, author, inventor, and social philosopher. He was the Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard University from 1958 until his retirement in 1974.
Born: March 20, 1904,
Died: August 18, 1990
A controversial figure, Skinner has been depicted in many different ways. He has been called evil, hateful, but also warm and enthusiastic. Much of Skinner’s professional trouble derived from his penchant for attempting to apply science proven in lab environments at a universal level. His persona was as controversial as his science. http://goo.gl/qow3D

People and Perception
Perception is one of the oldest fields in psychology. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves. http://goo.gl/yNvBL

For anyone that might have to set a boundary today (Happy Monday)
Direct Communication is the Key
Using clear, simple language in a direct, respectful fashion will make you feel proud, simply because you spoke your peace. If the person raises an eyebrow, try not to assume you understand what they mean, because honestly you do not know what they are thinking. Make them do some work, and communicate their thoughts directly to you, in other words ask them what they mean by that raised eyebrow. Full article http://goo.gl/k7eB6

❤ All about Intimacy Tip❤
Be Sincere and Speak the Truth without hurting your partners’ feelings, be as clear and straightforward as possible. People, who are afraid of intimacy, do not share their sensitive side, attempt to take the risk and share a few warm, soft “fuzzy” feelings. Acknowledge, evaluate and accept the sentimental side. If one is sad express it verbally, as feeling sadness rather than anger, irritability or frustration. For the full article http://goo.gl/hZ3QO

"Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit" ----- Napolean Hill
✿ Psychological resilience is how a person/country copes with stress and adversity. The way people manage stress results in the ability to bounce back to a normal level functioning, or, not show the negative effects of trauma. Resilience is a learning process and not a trait.
✿ A more controversial form of resilience is frequently termed 'post-traumatic growth', where exposure to a traumatic event leads to improved functioning much like how a vaccination gives the physical body the ability to fend off exposure to a virus.
✿ Part is what is called cognitive reappraisal, and that involves looking at the trauma that people have experienced and reframing it. Then assimilate it into life view and you move on. By assimilating ... more »
