No Way Out
West Coast
South Island, New Zealand
I have to give credit for finding this spot to my good friend and photographer Shaun Mazurek. The waves come crashing through and around the arch, pouring into this little cave like cut out in the rock. One of the many beautiful spots along the west coast.

The Perfect Storm
From one of the craziest photography days I can recall. After extensive exploring, I finally found the location of this hidden beach. The issue is that both getting there and this particular comp are very tide specific. After a lot of waiting, one afternoon brought some decent thunderstorms through the area. Despite the 3/4 high tides, I decided to brave the journey to the spot in the hopes of capturing an image with the stormy clouds.
The hike out backs up against a several hundred foot sheer cliff face, with the ocean waves crashing against giant shore rocks and the cliffs. Even with my chest high waders on, the water would surge up to waist high at times. I was making good progress waiting for the waves to reseed, then running to the next rock face I could climb to wait out the next round of waves. In one such scenario, as I was making my way across an open... more »

Almost two weeks into a three week trip here in the amazing New Zealand South Island. So much to see here. 2200 miles on the vehicle so far. Just got back from backpacking the Routeburn Track . Here is an iPad photo from the amazing coasts here.

The Edge
I shot this self portrait a couple years ago on a visit to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. After shooting a beautiful sunrise, I quickly ran to this spot I had scouted the previous day. I setup my tripod on a large boulder type rock close to the edge, and put the camera on a 10 second timer. I then would have 10 seconds to drop 6 feet off this rock to a lower one, run about 15 feet to the edge of a straight 2000 foot drop and stop just a short foot from the edge Then I would have to compose myself for the shot, so I didn't look as frazzled as I felt running to the edge like that. Needless to say, it took me about a dozen tries to get it just right, and by the time I did, I was sweating from more than just running back and forth. =)

Unsteady Ground
There is always something unsettling about standing on a frozen lake. No matter how solid you think it is under your feet. It certainly doesn't help matters when the wind is pushing you, your pack and your tripod with camera on it across the ice.

Getting Wet
Sometimes, you just have to get in and get wet to get the shot you want...

Mordor
This is a remote and beautiful bend in Arizona. On this particular evening, smoke from controlled fires had rolled into the valley and sky, mixing with the clouds already there. At sunset, it looked like the sun just got snuffed out by all the smoke, but about 10 min after sunset the sky just blew up. Fortunately I had left my tripod all setup, and quickly captured the fading color.
