For "African Tuesdays" theme of "African ways" I have dug in the archives and come up with a snapshot taken from a driving and rather rattling vehicle on the road back to Twee Rivieren in the Kgalagadi. I was fortunate to spend 2 wonderful weeks in the Kruger National Park (South Africa) recently and although the grass is high and the bushes are dense at this time of the year, wonderful sightings are still possible with a little patience and endurance. I met these two white rhinos on the dirt road one early morning, the first rays of sun started to penetrate the still lingering mist. At the ever increasing rate of rhino-poaching for their horns, these impressive animals are unfortunately walking towards an uncertain future - even possible extinction - of the species. For

This specimen wasn't waving to me, it was lifting its leg to scratch an itch behind its ear :). I was happy to see ground hornbills on my visit to Tanzania in February as these are listed as vulnerable by IUCN. Habitat destruction and persecution have caused very rapid population declines as they roost and nest in tall trees. However, they fly to the ground in the mornings to forage for insects, small rodents and reptiles on the ground. For

The coastline of South Africa is always a great place to be at, but never more so than the winter months, when humpback whales visit the eastern coastline to breed. I photographed this adult humpback breaching using my Canon 1Dmk4, fitted with the EF70-300f4-5.6L IS lens, handheld. Shutter speed 1/4000s at f/5.6, iso 640.

It seems the news for rhinos just keeps getting worse as they are targeted by poachers in ever increasing numbers. A good friend of mine Sam is trying hard to do something about this however. He is raising money for Save The Rhinos by running the London marathon. The catch? He'll be wearing a full-body rhino suit for the entire race! Madness I say...

The photographers here are all in my personal circles. The choices are mine and mine alone. No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong. No bribes were offered or accepted. This image epitomizes Africa for me, starting with the cloud of dust that is caused by a multitude of hooves thundering past on the way to the river. Africa is a dusty continent when it hasn't rained for some time.
However, this picture also shows what happens when the rains finally come, puddles joining to rapidly form brown streams and eventually rivers, which bring new life to plants and animals. In this example, the animals had to cross the river in order to find greener pastures. The zebras took the lead and were the first to brave the murky river and the many dangers that a crossing entails, while the wildbeest looked on rather hesitantly. The three birds in the foreground again, joined me as observers of this uniquely African scene.

Walking forward with confidence, this elephant calf explores its world, being protected by adults on its flanks and back. But even fiercely protective adult elephants are helpless against the heavily armed poachers that are decimating Africa's elephant population at an alarming rate. 25000 elephants were killed in Africa last year, ivory worship presently results in 67 dead elephants per day in Tanzania alone. Much of the ivory finds its way into religious ornaments. Killing elephants in the promotion of religion and superstition just adds insult to injury.
The future that this little calf is facing looks bleak!

Oxpeckers were originally thought to be an example of mutualism, by feeding on ticks and other insects plagueing the host. However, recent evidence suggests that oxpeckers may be parasites instead. This one was certainly taking his daily dose of blood from this zebra.
