Black and white inspiration flipbook. This is where I put those images that inspire me. Give it a look.

Project 52 B&W
Week 21: Curves
#P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

In an attempt to expand my photographic horizons, I departed from my usual dark contrasty style for this light, airy, high-key image of some strips of paper on a piece on white foam core. Definitely a different kind of shoot for me since I had to completely ignore the light meter in the camera and rely on the histogram to tell me when I had the exposure correct.

The event that is often the climax of a hot air balloon festival. For a night glow, the balloons are set up in the launch area and inflated just after sunset. However, instead of ascending, the balloons are held down by the ground crew. When the balloon pilots ignite their burners to inflate the balloons, the balloons glow brightly in the dark of twilight.

Wow, how many UI changes can we handle simultaneously? Google+, Pinterest, Facebook, now Flickr. They are all starting to look the same. I'm having trouble remembering what site I'm on and I think I just posted a cake recipe to  Flickr by accident. ;)

This is a pretty cool deal, 15GB of online storage for free plus a 5GB bonus if you use the provided referral link for a total of 20GB. Now I have somewhere to store all of those scanned vacations photos from the 1980's. LOL!

So many photos to make, so little time to make them... Can I trade in some of those wasted college years for some quality time. LOL!

A lonely gravel road heads off into the distance past farmland and barns to an unknown destination that represents home to the weary traveler. The monochrome look and feel of this image enhances the almost desolate feeling brought to life in this photograph.

A cold, dreary day on a farm in the Midwest. The light fallen snow forms rich textures throughout the fields while the barn sits idle waiting for the activity of summer. The homestead in the background looks weather beaten and worn but provides the family with a respite from the winter weather.

This image captures the texture and beauty of an aging barn. The rich wood grain is emphasized by the wonderful black and white tones. Within the window of the barn can be seen another collection of windows being stored for some later use. When I came across this view, I thought how ironic that the newer windows are being protected from the elements by the old rustic window.

The calm of early morning just after sunrise over Johnson Lake in the Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park outside Kewanee, Illinois. The rays of the early morning sun can be seen streaming through the light fog that sits above the lake. The golden color of the sunlight enhances the fall colors in the trees along the shoreline making them glow with brilliant reds and oranges.

I am never sure if the purpose of a lock is to keep those on the outside on the outside or those on the inside on the inside. Nevertheless, this wonderful antique Yale lock hanging on an old barn door caught my attention from far away and begged me to create its portrait. The rustic charm of the lock is a perfect combination with the weathered wood grain of the door reminding use of simpler times. It appears the hasp has long since disappeared and the lock no longer has a role to play in life other than watch the days pass by.

An Ansel Adams inspired work displaying the majesty of The Watchman mountain peak at Canyon Junction in Zion National Park. The mountain is lit by the last rays of the quickly setting sun, which is glimmering off the western side of the mountain peak. The minimal light available to photograph required a long exposure that shows the motion of the clouds behind the mountain. The shadows created by the setting sun emphasize the rugged face of the mountain exposing the mountains character in great detail.

Zoom Zoom

I have been looking for a good reason to try the 2nd curtain synchronization feature in my camera. When I saw the theme of this project, I knew I had my reason. I spent the evening rolling my grandson’s toy car across my desk while firing the camera and strobe. Anyone walking down the street probably freaked at all the bright flashes coming from my office window. This was the best shot of the bunch. It is a one-second exposure @ f/2.8.  I got a nice blur from the car rolling and a frozen image when the strobe fired at the end of the exposure, exactly what I was trying to achieve. I love it when things work out.

Project 52 B&W
Week 17: Night Lights
#P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

This would seem like the opportune time to mention my crazy busy schedule this week trying to get prints ready for two shows and a competition and how that greatly affected my time behind the camera and how this image was really cool looking when I captured it in the parking lot after dinner with my wife one night this week, but then found the vision for the photo just did not work out in post processing after which I realized I had no other shots and sadly had to go with this one. But then, that would sound a whole lot like everybody else’s story who also managed to capture and process some gorgeous night shots even with a crazy busy schedule.

And now for something completely different...

You'll either love this or hate this, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground on this image. Yes, I pushed the post processing (pushed it hard), but this is danged close to the scene I saw that morning, which is why I stopped the car and set up the camera. Your comments (good or bad) are always welcome.

Easter Lily

I thought about all kinds of non-traditional takes on this week’s theme, but I kept coming back to the familiar flower shot. This is an Easter lily bloom that has just began to open.

This machine will get you to your location in style, but man does it ever have lousy gas mileage. And trying to find a decent mechanic, forget about it.
