Yes, it is possible to have genuine online friends, we miss you Dieter
Two years ago, +Dieter Mueller  played an experiment where he deleted his G+ account in order to show the superficial nature of online friendships and what he called the ‘big data cow’. His experiment failed miserably when scores and scores of people contacted him to know was he okay and to come back and join us again.
Sadly, Dieter has departed for good this time. In true Dieter style, and in his own words he has stage managed his own death. I’ve no doubt he is above there now looking down at us all and smiling, but I’m sad we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. I hope Dieter has finally found the rest he desired.

Humans need to get more human again if they are to replace the machines #AI #Robots #CustomerService
Yeah, we are all bored silly with talk of Artificial Intelligence and the robots taking over. We’ve all had enough experience at this stage to see they are doing a bad job: the automated telephone helplines are just dire with endless options until finally you dial 1 for the customer agent, the online chat line help is next to useless and after about 30 minutes you pick up the phone to ask the human to take over and deal with the issue.
But now the humans seem to be afraid to be human, they no longer respond like humans, they’re scared and they don’t seem to have any ideas of their own. You might know them, you might live in the locality and yet they start talking and acting like machines. If the humans are going to keep their jobs they need to start being human again, start listening,start... more »

Wherever I lay my mat #beaches #nature #GreekIslands
I notice the term ‘organised beach’ has become increasingly popular. It seems to mean a beach where there are rows and rows of sun loungers and umbrellas absolutely wrecking the beautiful vista. Cheap cafes and blaring music are usually thrown in for good measure!
For many years, most of the beaches on the Greek Islands were unorganised and unspoilt .Most beaches were surrounded by 'koukounari' (pine) trees providing natural shelter from the sun. And that’s the way beaches should remain.

Why are Google product updates getting worse and worse  #Google
I’ve always loved Google and more or less moved my life to Google many years ago. I’m so disappointed that Google keep messing up perfectly good products that used to work really well. What’s going on? Changes are fine if they are for good, but many of these changes are just messing for the sake of messing. Is there any option to revert back to older Google versions that worked really well?
Gmail. I’ve been there since beta testing and loved it. I’d all my labels and filters all working well and now recent updates are automating the process and they are quite simply dire e.g. most emails get lumped into ‘updates’. No, they are not all updates, some of these emails are really important information from my bank, some are important job contacts. Please let me sort my own gmail, I do a better job. Contactsmore »

No, they are not all updates, some of these emails are really important information from my bank, some are important job contacts. Please let me sort my own gmail, I do a better job.
Contacts: I tried to make a new group yesterday. I was looking to add people I already emailed to a new information group. It took me ages as most of the suggestions were from G+ (No, I follow these people, I am not in contact with them). Eventually I got an option to revert to the old contacts and this worked just fine, these are my contacts i.e. people I contact
Google Maps: I used to love it. What has happened? I’m now getting over a quarter the screen blocked with my search query. I try and use street view and instead  I get a selection of photos I don’t want. The detailed route directions are also often inaccurate now.
Google Photos: I absolutely loved the photos on G+ with great editing and AutoEnhance settings, all easy to use and intuitive. Now it’s a complicated mess with categories that make no sense to me at all.
Google Search My default homepage since the 1990’s and what Google was all about. Now I get unverified and inaccurate Wikipedia results, something called the Knowledge Graph that is anything but, lots of empty vessels making a lot of noise and nothing resembling the search results I am looking for.

Google, can we go back in time to when you got things right?

The +1 is broken yet again #Google
Correct me if I’m wrong but has the Facebook Like ever been broken? G+ is just over 4 years old now and for the umpteenth time the +1 is broken. Yeah, it probably shouldn’t make a difference and I should ignore it, does it really matter if the +1 is working and people show their approval or not? But it seems like this is a basic feature that should work?

Can I just choose to Hangout with people I Know? #Hangouts #Settings #Google
G+ is 4 years old now and I’ve been here since day two and shouldn’t be lost. . Hangouts are now independent of G+ and still a very confusing mess. Maybe I’m missing something basic in all the G+ help manuals out there but where can I adjust my Hangout settings? I am getting invites from total strangers that are not in my circles and invites that make noise in the middle of the night… . I don’t seem to have any control over this at all. Is there a settings options somewhere where I can choose Family/Friends/My Circles and ignore everybody else?

I’m just dropping in to say hello  #Communities  #AntiSocialMedia
Remember when Communities were about community and communicating? talking? Having a chat? When we first started the Ireland community here on G+, we had less than 100 members and it was a hum of activity. It was a bit like the local pub: drop in every evening and say hello and see who’s at the bar. We’ve over 4,000 members now and it seems to be just a place to dump the latest promotion or the latest photo and ‘do re share’.  I don’t think this is Google’s fault at all, it’s probably just human nature and it’s a bit sad.

Seaweed is especially beneficial for dry skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, uneven skin tone and blotchy skin.
Seaweed moisturises hair, increases hair lustre and softness and decreases’ electrostatic charge.
Improves Body Metabolism and relieves pain
Iodine which is prevalent in seaweed, is essential for the thyroid gland to regulate the body’s metabolism. An under-active thyroid can lead to weight gain, fatigue, cold sensitivity, loss of hair and slow pulse.
Seaweed contains anti-inflammatory compounds and helps relieve arthritis, rheumatism, muscular and back pain.
Detoxes body and lifts mood
Seaweed has high levels of antioxidants such as algal polyphenols and carotenoids. These detoxify and eliminate excess fluid in body tissues. Seaweed bathing also stimulates lymph drainage and promotes weight loss. Other benefits to the body's lymph system include boosting immunity, raising energy levels and promoting stress relief and restoring equilibrium.

Dun Laoghaire Baths have got the go ahead at last #Seaweed #Baths #DunLaoghaire
I’m so happy to see the new development plans for the baths but a bit disappointed there won’t be any baths as such as they are too expensive. https://dlrcoco.citizenspace.com/architects/d-n-laoghaire-baths   I’ve put in my own submission suggesting indoor seaweed baths in the first phase.  These could be accommodated within the Pavilion building and would not involve any significant structural changes or alterations to the proposed plans.  Dún Laoghaire was famous for its natural seawater baths and it would be nice to return to the past and to the historic roots of Dún Laoghaire as the place for natural luxurious bathing.

Bring luxurious bathing back to Dun Laoghaire
I’ve been fascinated by heated seawater for some time now. Our seawater in Ireland is usually too cold for most of us. Now there are plans for a heated seawater pool in Dun Laoghaire where I live. I’m not sure the location on the pier is ideal but I’d really love to see this happen.  http://www.thejournal.ie/dun-laoghaire-urban-beach-1055831-Aug2013/
Dun Laoghaire (formerly known as Kingstown) was famous for its natural seawater baths. In 1843 the Royal Victorian Baths were built beside Scotman’s Bay. They were extremely popular and Dun Laoghaire became one of the best places in Ireland to bathe. There was a range of bathing options including sea and fresh water, hot and cold baths, medical baths with sulphur, seaweed and hot seawater.
Let’s bring luxurious bathing back to Dun Laoghaire!

Walk an hour a day and you’ll be grand!  #exercise #fitness #health
Recent research has claimed the optimum exercise is to walk for just 450 minutes per week, or a little more than an hour per day. “Those people were 39 percent less likely to die prematurely than people who never exercised. Those few individuals engaging in 10 times or more the recommended exercise dose gained about the same reduction in mortality risk as people who simply met the guidelines”   http://well.blogs.nytimes.com//2015/04/15/the-right-dose-of-exercise-for-a-longer-life/   (h/t +Nico Nightowl )
This got me thinking about my own daily habits and I downloaded Walkroid, a very simple app to measure daily steps and walking.. I’m pleasantly surprised to see I average about 6-7km daily just doing my normal stuff, that sounds good to me and I’ll give the gym a miss!

Why the Myers-Briggs test is totally meaningless   #Psychology #Personality
This isn't a test designed to accurately categorize people, but a test designed to make them feel happy after taking it. This is one of the reasons why it's persisted for so many years in the corporate world after being disregarded by psychologists.
• The Myers-Briggs uses false, limited binaries. “There is no such thing as a pure extravert or introvert”, Jung wrote.
• The Myers-Briggs provides inconsistent, inaccurate results Research has found that as much as 50 percent of people arrive at a different result the second time they take a test, even if it's just five weeks later.

Anyone else notice Google have been AutoAwesoming (new verb???) photos in black and white for the last few weeks? What’s going on? HDR overload? A new trend? Now I love professional black and white shots and they are classy and arty but my amateur holiday photos look very bleak indeed when they have the colour taken out of them!
Here’s a photo of the colourful boats at the harbour in Gozo, I think they look very forlorn and dreary when Google has stripped them of their colour…..

Mandatory calories on menus and Maths lessons for chefs? #GreatIrishFood   #Calories
Leaving aside the idea of a Nanny state deciding what we can and cannot eat and the issues of diet and obesity, the practical implementations of this new law are ridiculous. Seems to me there is a hell of a lot of Maths involved before the dinner even gets to reach the oven!
The proposed new Irish law will require all menus, including boards, leaflets, digital menus or other forms, to display the amount of calories alongside the price in the same font size and colour. Now this will be easy enough to enforce for fast food chains with the same daily menu and meal deals ready to go, but Ireland is renowned for its individual restaurants where the menu changes daily depending on the local products available and the fresh fish catch of the day. Sadly no, it was still like the small child with very limited information. And my luggage was lost, no Google didn’t hear about that at all.
And on a daily basis? I work remotely from home and Google is killed trying to find a place for me to travel to for work. A family member had recently been in hospital so I keep getting suggestions every day that this hospital is my place of work. It would take a reasonably intelligent human being about 5 minutes to figure out that the hospital was for visits to sick people but the machine and the algorithms are still struggling to make sense of it all.
I’ll play around with it for another while but I’m not dealing with a small child that I would love and care for and be patient with. I’m dealing with a machine and I’m going to throw it away very soon for being stupid! ___

I did send a message to account owner and there was no response.
Interestingly its on Google+ account. So I could approach google to see if they would take it down but would have preferred if account owner just added link back to where they found image or better yet shared image link. I mean look at the traffic hitting that image! :) :)
I have NEVER had on Google+ 850 plusses and 926 reshares and never mind 420 comments on any images I’ve personally shared.

The People’s Park Dun Laoghaire restored to its former glory  #DunLaoghaire
The People's Park Dun Laoghaire was officially opened to the public on September 29th 1890
It was developed by the then Kingstown Town Commissioners towards the end of the 19th century in the formal Victorian style. In archaeological terms it represents an impressive ensemble of original features from its unusual bandstand, ornate pavilion, lodge and fountains, to a number of very fine original benches.
The Irish Times reporting on the opening, gave a generally positive review of the grounds as ‘worthy of one of the most fashionable townships in Ireland’ while remarking on the ‘unstinted praise on the part of all who saw it’.

A new low for LinkedIn   #clickbait   #hoax   #urbanlegends
This silly fake motivational story about the jobless man who applied for the position of office boy at Microsoft has been doing the rounds on e-mail for years. In fact the origins of the story can be traced back to Jewish folklore and Somerset Maugham’s 1929 short story ‘The Verger'. a story about an illiterate church caretaker who is fired by the vicar when his lack of education comes to light. The ousted verger goes on to become a tobacconist, eventually owning a string of shops in London.

It’s a cute feel good story but it’s not a true story and it should not be presented as such. It’s a sad day indeed when a professional business network such as LinkedIn promotes viral click bait.

Gap of Dunloe     #Killarney   #RingOfKerry
I missed the Gap on a recent trip to Killarney as the road is extremely narrow and not suitable for cars. Most people take the trip in horse-drawn traps. There are also riding ponies for hire. The trap and ponies are guided by men from families that live in and around the Gap. These pony men use a rotation system called the Turn which determines who takes the next customers. The Turn has been in existence since the 1920s and is passed down in families to the next generation.
(Thanks +pat o'duffy  for braving the road and taking the photo!)

Wifi and Internet access is always bad at large tech conferences, fact  #Wifi   #WebSummit
Paddy Cosgrave, the founder of the Web Summit, which attracted more than 20,000 visitors to Dublin over the last three days, has warned that he may be forced to move the event out of Ireland next year due to a disagreement with the RDS over the provision of wifi at the venue.
Has Paddy been at any event with comparative numbers attending where the wifi worked well for everybody?
There’s an interesting discussion here on why wifi and internet access is always bad at tech conferences http://serverfault.com/questions/72767/why-is-internet-access-and-wi-fi-always-so-terrible-at-large-tech-conferences
Maybe people need to start talking to each other at these events instead of talking to their devices….

I’m absolutely thrilled my +Ireland  page has just passed 10,000 followers. But it has been hard work for a team of 10 of us, sharing and curating content on a daily basis for three years. We’ve got no help from Google, we’re not on any of their suggested user lists or recommendations. We don’t play ‘daily shared circles’, it’s been word of mouth and thanks to all of the mouths! We’ve had Photowalks and we’ve met in real life and we’ve made real friends. That’s what’s worth it and thanks to all of you for following Ireland and all about Ireland on G+.  Sláinte ! #Ireland

“Touristification…an aspect of modern life that treats humans as washing machines, with simplified mechanical responses and a detailed user’s manual.”

If the tourist is the traveler that wants things to be clear, safe and predictable, then his opposite would be the “flâneur”: he who strolls aimlessly, open to randomness and volatility in the journey as he moves forward. What we need is institutions that can provide a “flâneurial” education.

A Pattern Language for New Media

28 slides aimed at making sense of some of distinguishing elements of modern media: things like topic, interest, and social graphs, and how they connect to identity, writing and viewing functionality, as well as revenue models.

At the end, you'll find examples like Google+, Google Search, Facebook, LinkedIn, reddit, Huffington Post, and WordPress. I'm sure there will be plenty of differences of opinion and interpretation on these examples, but then that's part of the usefulness of models like this.

A more in-depth analysis, focusing on the critical role of automated, unpaid, end user engagement in media is here (along with a pointer to the SlideShare version of the slides):

A Pattern Language for New Media
For more: http://www.the-vital-edge.com/new-media/

Our new media giants operate powerful, automated platforms that enable end users to contribute all kinds of value around information processing, and with as little employee intervention as possible. Minimizing employee involvement in all these end user contributions lowers costs and improves quality assurance, as does all automation.

But automation also plays another important role in generating scale – the kind of scale needed to engage very large numbers of people.

P.S.
I've pinged a few people who seemed to have expressed interest in these kinds of ideas in the past. I do it rarely, but if you prefer I not at all, please let me know (or if you'd like to be notified in future).

LinkedIn Pulse News Feed on mobile   #LinkedIn   #News
It’s still in beta but I’m really impressed with the updated Pulse News mobile app. There are options to select favourite news media sources, preferred contributors and journalists and areas of interest. More importantly, LinkedIn customise the news feed based on colleagues and connections, what they are publishing, when they are mentioned in the news and what they are sharing.
Twitter have been sending news e mails for a few months now, a bit of a random selection. And very recently Facebook have started sending e mails with ‘top news in your network’. But family and friends are not the people we turn to for news stories.
Interesting to watch the race, LinkedIn is winning in my opinion.

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park
Bunratty Folk Park is a living reconstruction of the homes and environment of Ireland of over a century ago. Set on 26 acres, the park features over 30 buildings in a ‘living’ village and rural setting.
Rural farmhouses, village shops and streets are recreated and furnished as they would have appeared at that time according to their social standing, from the poorest one roomed dwelling to Bunratty House a fine example of a Georgian residence for the gentry built 1804 home of the Studdarts, the last family to occupy Bunratty Castle.
The village houses and shops in the Folk Park have been chosen from many different areas, to form a collection of typical 19th century urban Irish buildings including the School, Doctor’s house, Pawnbrokers, Pub, Drapery, Printworks, Grocery, Hardware shop, Pottery and a Post Office.

There were 74 Martello towers built along Ireland’s coastline at the beginning of the 19th century including 16 Martello towers on the coast of Dublin stretching from Bray to Howth. The Martello tower in Sandycove is the most famous as James Joyce lived there for a while and the tower made such a dramatic impression that he set the entire first chapter of Ulysses inside it.
“They halted while Haines surveyed the tower and said at last: Rather bleak in winter time I should say, Martello you call it?”
Fear of an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte reached panic proportions among the authorities in Ireland and England in 1804 and was the reason Martello Towers were built, first in Ireland and then in England. Their purpose was to provide what were, in those days, 'bombproof' towers from which fire could be directed at ships of the hourly expected French invasion fleet.
The name “Martello” derived from the name of a tower at Mortella point in the gulf of Fiorenzo.  The Royalist French along with the Royal Navy, failed to take the tower after attempting to rebel against the Napoleonic French in 1794.  So impressed were the British by the strength of the tower, they suggested that similar towers would be useful in Ireland and England.  However, an error occurred during communication between the sides and the word “Mortella”, was written as “Martello”.
The original Towers from the Napoleonic era are circular in shape, with 2-4 meter thick walls, which were made from solid stone that was all sourced locally. The entrance doorway of the towers are 3.0 metres from the ground which meant at the time access to the entrance was only made by a ladder.  The ladder then could be removed to protect against an invader.
The Towers never fired a cannon in anger, as Napoleon never invaded Ireland or England. However, it is believed that the Towers acted as a deterrent, as Napoleon had every intention of invading England using Ireland as a “back door” bridgehead.

The James Joyce Martello Tower Sandycove:   http://jamesjoycetower.com/
The James Joyce Tower and its history James Holahan (vice chair Friends of the Joyce Tower) will give a talk at 7.30pm on Wednesday 27 August in the Magpie Inn, Coliemore Road Dalkey ___
