Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Jake Kern24,894The Silver DonutBeen wanting to do a circle share for a while, but I just haven't wanted to put in the work to get a group of 100 for another #GoldenDonut. Instead, I grabbed the top 500 from my Google relevancy algorithm. Then I removed a couple people who don't like being in circle shares & some pages so I could stretch the 500 a bit. (For instance, both +Melissa Bagley & +Melissa Ann Bagley Photography would be in the circle--in the top 25, actually--but I just included Melissa's personal profile even though you should circle both.)Many amazing people in here. Thank you for making this corner of the Internet worthwhile.Peace. #SilverDonut  2013-07-13 22:19:3849915023134
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy
http://www.eoghann.com/movie-review-guardians-of-the-galaxy

Well this was just plain fun. I had a smile on my face through almost the entire movie. And if you want a TLDR for this review, then fun pretty much sums it all up. Certainly this isn't an intellectually challenging movie but I think I can safely say that you'll enjoy every moment of it.

When Marvel Studios announced they were making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie there was a lot of doubt online (where everyone thinks they are an expert) about the viability of taking a bunch of characters that probably wouldn't even be described as D-list and making a movie based on them. Shows what the internet knows.

So when one of my posts hits the Whats Hot lists there's an inevitable influx of idiots.

For this particular post I went through and blocked anyone who was making negative comments about the people (well it was the girl actually) who happened to be in the photo.

One of the people that I blocked, his most recent post on his profile was bemoaning how people treat other people who are different so badly.

Okay, gradually getting back into my routine. Photos are all uploaded and I'm picking out highlights to share.

Got the first of two reviews posted today. Fixed all the typos my beta readers found in The Wolves of West Virginia.

Just in time for Christmas to mess up my routine all over again!

Book Review: The King's Sword by C. J. Brightley
http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-kings-sword-c-j-brightley

At the end of a recent book review I made a comment to the effect that I was getting rather weary of 'grimdark' fantasy. Well The King's Sword is about as far from 'grimdark' as you can get. In fact the central characters are so consistently good and honorable in their world view the author does run the risk of her story being dismissed as naïve. But, you know, there's really nothing wrong with a story that exemplifies good behavior rather than bad.

The story is told entirely from the viewpoint of Kemen Sendoa, a retired solider, who rescues a teenage boy lost and out in the countryside in deep winter. The boy turns out to be the son of the, now dead, King of Erdemen and thus heir presumptive.

See... this is why I don't get all attitudinal about finding typos in books:

The Wolves of West Virginia is 13,470 words long. I spell checked it, I read and re-read it and fixed multiple spelling errors and typos. Four further people then went through it.

They all found errors, at least half of which were different to the ones the others found.

I'm starting to wonder if there was a single word spelled correctly.

Festival of Fantasy - Tangled Float

Of course the Disney Princesses get a lot of attention in the Festival of Fantasy parade naturally and Tangled being the most recent hit when the parade was planned (Anna and Elsa had to be crammed in at the last moment) gets its own float.

Two things worth noting. The floats are huge, which is a great thing if you're not at the front of the crowd because you'll still be able to see both them and the characters. Also there are lots of little theming details both on the float and with the dancers that precede it. In this case not only to we have a mime dancer, but notice the pans hanging from the side of the float and of course the large braid of hair.

Not some of my better photographs, but in my defense I was pretty much sniping shots around a couple of women's heads. They just would not stay still.

Festival of Fantasy Parade - The Maleficent Dragon

Disney's new Festival of Fantasy parade is easily the best parade that I've seen from them. The amazing steampunk Maleficent dragon tends to get most of the attention but all the other floats and costumes are worth soaking in too.

But, I'm starting with Maleficent, because this is one (relatively unusual case) where I think Disney did better than Universal. The Gringotts dragon is cool, but it's not this cool.

Fantasmic

This is the first time that I'd see the Fantasmic show at Disney's Hollywood Studios. I don't know if I'd feel the need to watch it every time but I thought it was fun. We were close enough to the front to get misted by the water, but no more than that.

Really the only bad bit was trying to leave. There's some very poor crowd control and street design in that park that funnels all the people coming out onto the same street as all the people going in.

Taking photos of Fantasmic is pretty challenging. You've got low lighting, water spray, smoke and lots of movement. On top of that you're far enough away you really need to use some sort of telephoto lens to make out anything in the photos. Try doing all that freehand and getting a passable photo.

Be Our Guest

Disney's Be Our Guest restaurant is really hard to get into for dinner, but we were lucky enough not only to get a table, but to get one right next to the amazing picture windows (complete with artificial night and snow).

The atmosphere in Be Our Guest is really nothing like other Disney restaurants I've been in.  While there are certainly a lot of people, the low light makes it feel much more intimate. The menu is rather different to the usual offerings (and my herb crusted lamb was delicious).

But what really makes the restaurant is of course the theming which is amazing. We were seated in the ballroom and here are few photos of that room.

It's a difficult environment to take good pictures in. Low lighting, lots of people and hand holding a camera. I've tried to minimize the color noise, but there is still a fair amount of... more »

Snow On Main Street

So one of the things we did was the "hard ticket" (translation: extra money please!) Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

And the centerpiece of that is a special Christmas parade which is really pretty cool and of course attracts almost everyone in the park to Main Street.

Why Main Street? Because Disney make it snow. And snow falling when it's above 50 degrees is really cool!

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Christmas Tree

The Jambo House Lobby at Animal Kingdom Lodge is a gorgeous structure even without decorations in place, but with this Christmas tree as a centerpiece it was absolutely stunning.

I used the smallest aperture I could to get the nice star effect on the christmas tree lights, however that did introduce a certain amount of noise into the image.

Take boys to buy birthday present for Mom - Check
Get new shoes for myself and for Jamie - Check
Get and sign birthday cards - Check
Get luggage out from under the house - Check
Get Christmas tree and decorations from under the house - Check
Write Guardians of the Galaxy review - Check

All that and it's not quite 11am!

So the first draft of ZombieMart: Part 1 — Assault On Supermart 13 is complete and clocks in at 1,991 words. A little shorter than originally estimated but in the right ballpark. Particularly since my writing always gets longer in redrafts.

However, it really does need that second draft before it's at a point where I'm happy putting it on Medium.

So I'm seriously considering moving from 2K chunks to 1K chunks. Which will make this a 4 part story rather than a 2 part (but not significantly change it's final length). My thinking is this:

At my current rate I'm doing about 500 words a night (because I'm also writing blog posts at least every other night). So 1,000 new words plus 1,000 words re-drafted should be about a 4 days or an entirely manageable weekly schedule.

Saturday Scenes: ZombieMart -Part 1

Since ZombieMart is taking a little longer than planned, I figured I'd give a sneak peak from the first draft.

“That’s disgusting.” Bethany complained. She went on at some length but I had largely tuned her out. There was a strange dirty yellow fog spreading across the concrete floor of the warehouse. That couldn’t be good. To make matters worse it was between us and the exits.

I watched it for a moment as Bethany continued to tell me just how unpleasant she found the smell to be. The fog spread out slowly, hugging the ground as it did so. So it was heavier than air then. As the cloud grew, the stench grew stronger confirming the obvious connection between the two.

I watched it for a moment as Bethany continued to tell me just how unpleasant she found the smell to be. The fog spread out slowly, hugging the ground as it did so. So it was heavier than air then. As the cloud grew, the stench grew stronger confirming the obvious connection between the two.

Several other blue clad employees appeared, no doubt also looking for the source of the smell. They hung around looking confused and useless, probably much like I was, until Maggie arrived to take charge. By this point the fog had grown noticeably, if still very slowly.

“When I find out which of you jokers did this, there will be hell to pay.” Maggie muttered, glaring at each of us in turn. “Now clean it up.”

I felt my mouth go dry. Sure it was probably just some sort of smoke bomb. That made sense, right? But my Spider-Sense was tingling. No, wizards don’t actually have a “spider-sense”. Shame, it would be useful.

“Now!” Maggie grabbed a brush and shoved it into the hands of the nearest person. I’m not quite sure what she thought he was going to be able to do with that. He didn’t really seem to know either, shuffling forward and half-heartedly pushing the brush into the smoke.

Which is when things went straight to hell. I watched as the dirty yellow mist swirled around the shaft of the brush and then surged up it and along the man’s arms. He cried out in surprise, dropping the brush, but by then the smoke was all over him. In seconds he was completely obscured from my sight. He coughed and flailed around trying to wave the gas away, but it didn’t work. Everyone stepped back in alarm.

It’s not very noble I realize, but if you had just seen this you wouldn’t be rushing forward either. Moments later the man slumped to the ground. or at least I assume he did because the smoke settled back down to floor level. We all stared at each other in shock. What was this?

And that's all you get for right now. I'm hoping to get a second pass at Part 1 completed and get it up before I go on vacation.

You can however, read the entire first Douglas Brodie story on Medium: https://medium.com/@EoghannIrving/the-wolves-of-west-virigina-index-24067ebff329

Maybe I should post a few paragraphs as a SaturdayScenes thing?

http://www.eoghann.com/ten-scifi-movies-watch-netflix-weekend

So it's Thanksgiving weekend again here in the US and maybe you've got a little extra time off work to enjoy. But what to do with it all?

Well, there's huge quantities of food to consume of course, and no doubt several sportsball games for those who enjoy them. But how about you indulge in a little relaxation with your favorite genre? Lets watch some science fiction or fantasy courtesy of Netflix.

Read The List... http://www.eoghann.com/ten-scifi-movies-watch-netflix-weekend

Yes I cheated a little, some of them aren't technically movies!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Teaser Trailer

So we have our teaser trailer. It's short and gives us very little, because it's a teaser.

Couple of nice scenes in there. I still don't like the name.I do like that they didn't focus on the older characters.

I'm feeling lazy and unoriginal today. So it's going to be a top 10 list post for the blog!

And you watch... it will be the most popular thing I've posted in two weeks. :D

Okay 1,528 words now written for ZombieMart Part 1 and I still have two of my five paragraphs of outline to go. Pretty much on target for length then but I'm not sure I'll have it finished tonight. Then again, the next bit is an action scene and they seem to write themselves faster.

Now, time for a change of pace and working on a blog post.

There's one thing more irritating than endless posts about Black Friday and those are the endless posts about how wrong/bad Black Friday is.

They have the same irritating repetition as the first category but a bonus quantity of smug superiority to them.

Free Fiction For Your Thanksgiving Enjoyment

This is a sneak peek of what should be coming tomorrow. Because, you know, fun.

Assuming, of course, amazon doesn't do something stupid with my scheduling.___Free Fiction For Your Thanksgiving Enjoyment

I'm not much for planning out stories in advance beyond a few paragraphs that say where I think I'm going. I certainly don't map out characters and backstory.

But when writing a series of serials using the same characters and locations, it is kind of important to maintain a certain level of consistency.

Some people use notepads, others use Scrivener. I like to be web based. I considered setting up a full wiki, but I don't actually like wiki's. I find the UI actively unfriendly.

So instead, why not just create a custom post-type in Wordpress for it and add it the information to my blog.

Book Review: The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-paper-magician-charlie-n-holmberg

This was an enjoyable book to read but proves to be a remarkably frustrating one to review. The Paper Magician is aimed primarily at the Young Adult audience and is set in an alternate late Victorian era where magic seems to be tightly integrated into society. In fact it would appear to have taken the place of science (though that may be an over simplification).

You're likely to instinctively compare The Paper Magician with Harry Potter because there are some surface similarities, like references to a school for magicians and the young adult vibe. But, this is a smaller and more intimate story. Coming in at a mere 224 pages it is very brief by fantasy standards and though that is not an inherently bad thing some of my criticisms may result from the... more »

The next time my wife asks to borrow my phone I will insist on a deposit.

She dropped it in the snow and we spent 15 minutes before we found it again. I'm just hoping the snow was cold enough that not much moisture got in.

It's supposed to be somewhat water resistant I believe.

519 words written towards ZombieMart Part 1,

I'll take it because I got a bit of editing done on The Wolves of West Virginia and I got a blog post done.

No zombies yet though. But they're coming. Basically I've only covered the first paragraph of my outline. At which rate this part will be 2,595 words long. We'll see.

Dragonlance Re-Read: Dragons Of Autumn Twilight — Part 4
http://www.eoghann.com/dragonlance-re-read-dragons-autumn-twilight%E2%80%89-%E2%80%89part-4

The action heats up substantially in Dragons of Autumn Twilight as my re-read reaches Xak Tsaroth and chapters 13 through 16 and we finally encounter dragons. Not only is there a noticeable increase in action, but Hickman and Weis also manage to increase the emotional payload as well.

The Way Of Kings is an absurdly large book.

Reviewing it will be an interesting exercise... if I'm still alive by the time I finish it.

The Wolves of West Virginia Part 7 - Kiss and Make Up
https://medium.com/p/2b741f1b758a

I felt my knees wobble and let the last of the fire die out completely, sinking down to the ground. Magic drains you. The energy has to come from somewhere after all. And I had been tapping one form or another for hours now.

I glance round at the wolves. They could tear out my throat in a matter of seconds. I could only hope that they had understood enough of what they had witnessed to know that I was not their enemy.

When people start talking about how technology is cutting us off from appreciating the world or worthwhile interactions with other human beings they are making one fundamental mistake.

We never actually did that in the first place.

What we actually did was looked at scenery and said "that's pretty" or had incredibly tedious conversations about the weather with people we didn't like very much but were obliged to socialize with.

Writers spend far too much time romanticizing not only the notion of being a writer, but the act of writing and even worse the process of writing.

It's not magic, it's not a black box you can't see into that just produces amazing things. In fact it's really not that special at all.

It is repetition and craft, but mainly repetition.

Why I Call It Sci-Fi, or Genre Wars Are Dumb

The title of a currently unwritten blog post I just added to my list of drafts. It's a topic I've touched on more than once before, but it seems to be evergreen.

What Are The Most Significant SciFi Books Of The 60s?

So I'm in the first stages of pulling together information to tackle the 1960s in my History of Science Fiction series. Man what a decade. The raw list of books alone takes up most of 2,000 words.

I have to weed this down to key influential authors or individual books. And there are some huge names here.

What do you think are the most significant fantasy and science fiction books from the 60s?

Book Review: The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian

Urban Fantasy is an extremely popular genre and one that supports quite a range of styles. With The Accidental Alchemist Gigi Pandian may have come up with an entirely new sub-genre, or at least one I was not previously familiar with. It is part mystery, part recipe book!

I'm exaggerating here, but only slightly. The book is a light-hearted one that certainly belongs in the Urban Fantasy fold, though marking itself apart with an absence of werewolves, vampires or demons. There is a gargoyle though. A French one.

Looking For Beta Readers

So the final part of The Wolves of West Virginia will probably go up on Medium any time now (well, assuming +John Ward decides to publish it) and I've still working on the cover which I think is coming along nicely. And as I mentioned before Zombiemart is plotted.

So again I'll put out the call for beta readers to do one more pass through The Wolves of West Viriginia stamp out the typos and maybe point out a few rough edges that need sanding before compiling it for the Amazon version.

Any takers?

If not I'll probably start asking in some of the writing communities, but I thought I'd post to my stream first.

It's interesting sometimes I find that as I'm writing my review, my feelings about the book/show change. In this case I walked away from the book somewhat disappointed.

But once I started analysing it for the review I found that my tone became substantially more negative as the bad increasingly outweighed the good.
