LEGO Game of Thrones - The Titan of Bravos - http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/412666

Here's a cool Game of Thrones inspired LEGO build by Steve M. Check out the link for some details shots and to get a better feel for the scale of this.

For those who don't follow the books or tv show, the Titan of Bravos is a huge stone and bronze statue which stands guarding the entrance to the harbor of Bravos, one of the "Free Cities" in that fantasy world. It stands as the primary line of defense for the city giving early warning of invasion.

For those who just cannot bring themselves to read Ted Cruz rant let me offer a quick summary:

"Waaa!!! They didn't do what I want! We should get rid of them all!"

If the decision had gone his way, he would have been the first to tell people that they had to abide by the courts decision.

Look who we got to meet to today?

We went to the National Geographic Museum in DC to see their Indiana Jones exhibition. It was a clever blending of props and backstage stories from the four movies with real world archaeological exhibits and information.

And at the end there was the Madam Tussaud's waxwork of Indy. A very lifelike capture I think. The photograph was challenging though because he was placed in front of a window. I angled round to help things but even so there's a clash of lighting sources. If I'd had more time I'd probably have experimented with fill flash, but this was in the middle of the gift shop..

Anyone used an HDMI to Component converter with a Roku or other streaming video box?

One of my TVs doesn't have an HDMI input (no I'm not buying a new tv at the moment so let's skip that particular discussion). Right now I'm using a WD TV box which has optical audio out along with an HDMI to DVI converter.

This works quite well but the box is no longer being updated and I'd like to be able to stream Amazon Prime and HBO as well as the Plex, Hulu Plus as Netflix options I already have.

It strikes me that a Roku is probably the most complete option for that, but they all seem to be HDMI only these days. My TV can do DVI (which no one does any more), Component and Composite (as well as audio via TOSLink).

Suggestions?

This morning's walk was along the C&O Canal trail next to the Potomac near Harpers Ferry. I was using my new Peak Design Capture Camera Clip - http://amzn.to/1IRap9S - (I should do a review of that, it's great) so my camera was conveniently handy at any point on the walk and I snapped off a good number of photos.

I stitched this panorama together the old fashioned way (i.e. without Google's help) in Photoshop and then did some tweaking (Nik Color Efex filters if you're curious) to pull out some of the details in the landscape.

TV Review: Sense8 S01E01 - S01E04

The modest goal of the latest Netflix Original Sense8 (created by the impressive teaming of the Wachowski’s an J. Michael Straczynski) was to reinvent the television series. So if nothing else this show is shooting for the moon and while the landing isn’t smooth, but I think they at least made orbit.

The high concept of Sense8 isn’t radically different to other genre bending shows. Basically you’ve got a group of 8 individuals who are going about their lives when they are somehow gifted with the power to sense each other, talk to each other and utilize each other’s skills. The two photos in this album are generated from the same RAW file. But one was done automatically by Google Photos (without any input from me at all) and the other was done more intensively with Photoshop and Nik Pro filters.

Mine is better I think (extra details recovered from the highlights and the shading of his face reduce so you can see it better, a bit of sharpening plus some subtle darkening to focus your eye on the subject better), but the difference is fairly small and probably not worth it for 80% of photos.

Saw this bird on a recent walk. I think it's a Tree Swallow?

It was sitting on top of a nesting box and was surprisingly brave, even though I was using my telephoto lens I can't have been more than 10 feet away from it when I took this shot.

Really like the metallic blue feathers.

Since they were happilly sitting in the mud I was able to shoot a bunch of photos and Google gave me this nifty gif.

Copperhead Snake

Almost stepped on this guy on my walk this morning. He was half in and half out of the grass on the path.

The Copperhead is one of only two venomous snakes in West Virginia. The key things to notice are the way the dark banding narrows (like an hourglass) on the top of the boy and the vertical pupil (like a cats eye) which locally only the Copperhead and Rattlesnake have.

The snake just lay there with its tongue out waiting for me to go away. So, after taking some photos, I did. You can just about make out the vertical pupil in one of the photos, but unfortunately it's slightly out of focus.

Incidentally these photos are direct from the camera and uploaded to Google Photos as RAW files. Google does a good job of processing them I think.

So it seems that while Google Photos now does up to 16MP for jpegs it does still cap RAW files at 2.8MP which is fair enough I guess when you consider the size of a RAW file.

I does some decent processing to make that RAW file viewable to everyone though. Sure with Photoshop I could refine it further, but for a first pass to see what you've got it's very effective.

From a pure auto perspective it seems like Samsung's S6 is still a little better, but I like to edit my photos.

Zygons and Osgood Announced for Doctor Who Season 9

Following on from the news that Kate Stewart will return in the next season of Doctor Who is the rather more surprising news that actress Ingrid Oliver is returning to her role as Oswin Osgood.

Which, considering she was killed by the Master at the end of last season is quite the comeback. I presume the fact that the episode features Zygons has something to do with this apparent resurrection. I was sorry to see the character die though so I'd be happy if she actually has been brought back, rather than just mimicked by an alien.

Osgood will appear in a two part story written by Peter Harness who wrote the episode Kill the Moon for season 8. An episode that received mixed responses to say the least.

So You"ve Been Publicly Shamed

I just listened to an interview with the author of this book, Jon Ronson and it strikes me as something that anyone participating in social media might do well to read.

For several years now I have been critical of both the lynch mob mentality and the notion that "shaming" people is somehow okay if you're on the "right" side of the situation.

There are so many problems with that mentality it's hard to cover them all, but let's just hit a few.

1) People always think they're on the right side.
2) Glass houses
3) Proportionate responses

Are You Seeing An Uptick in Engagement Since Collections Arrived?

It could be coincidence because enough followers that some of my posts will just take off on their own, but it seems like everything I've posted to a collection has has received a lot of plus ones.

I'm curious if something about collections is making these posts more visible to people, or easier to find.

Spreading the word.

I've set up my patreon for short stories and novellas. (Novels are excluded for the patreon at this point, but I may include a goal later for novels being added as bonus material.)

I'll release one short story or novella each calendar month as a part of this patreon. It is not a monthly subscription. You only pay when a story is released. (Please make sure you set your maximum monthly spend so you stay in your budget.)

Thanks so much for your support. It's appreciated. If you decide to be a patreon, I hope you enjoy the stories!___Spreading the word.

Lock In by John Scalzi  - http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-lock-in-by-john-scalzi

There’s no mistaking what Lock In is, it’s a police procedural. It’s got a couple of twists to the formula but at its core it is unapologetically the sort of detective story that CBS would happily put in their lineup. Procedurals tend get looked down on because they rely so heavily on a certain pattern, but they’re also really popular. Which should tell you something.

More importantly Lock In is a well executed procedural, and the twists are interesting in their own right too.

What’s It All About?

The story is set in the near future after a virus (named Haden’s Syndrome) ravages the world on a scale close to that of the Black Death. The virus doesn’t just kill people though, in some cases it re-writes their brain leaving people conscious but unable to control their own bodies, or “locked in”. To solve the problem of these Hadens, technologies have been developed that allow them to control humanoid robotic bodies (nicknamed Threeps) letting them interact with the rest of society.

Naturally there are tensions in this new society both between normals and Hadens and also amongst Hadens themselves. Our protagonist Chris Shane (a new FBI agent) and partner Leslie Vann find themselves  a murder where the prime suspect is an “Integrator” (a person who can let a Haden use their body instead of a Threep) but who claims no memory of the murder. When additional murders occur it becomes clear that something much larger is going on.

Okay so after some thought, I'm going to make my first collection Book Reviews.

I considered splitting it up by genre, but then realized I'd have to listen to people whining about how I categorized things and whether a book was really science fiction or actually fantasy.

Screw that.

Okay so Collections...

I think I'm going to love this features since I mostly want to follow by topic. What I have to decide though is how to set up my own collections.

Should they be fairly broad (geekery, Reviews, writing) or really specific  (book reviews, tv reviews, LEGO, comics fan art, Doctor Who etc.)?

And for bonus points* tell me any particular collections you want me to create.

*I totally lied about the bonus points
