I sent my 5D Mark II in for a much needed sensor cleaning - very happy to do so. But something happened on the phone with repair support that made me wonder...
Just who invents these "security protections" when you call into Tech Support or Customer Support? What genius is behind this facade?
I could not complete the payment online, Canon's systems for the website were down and unavailable, so I had to call in to pay for the repair to get started. This initially hitches up my annoyance bar, but I call. My first call gets disconnected. Ok, whatever. I call back. I finally get through to repairs support and a very bored sounding tech answers the phone.
I explain to her the issue and give her my RN# she says how much it's going to be ($44.95 including return shipping, so not bad really) and I said alright, I agree to that.

So there is this information going around a bit today in posts I've seen (been around for a week or so) but it is about the What's Hot list showing different things based on whether or not you're flagged female or male.
This is my What's Hot list though. I think I know why Google is getting mine right.
I have every single Google service turned on. I think the most important one is Web History. I also use it all, every day, all the time. Google has loads of information about my habits and what I search, what I post, what's in my emails, everything. I don't mind it at all, because they are spot on when it comes to relevance --- if you let them be! They need your information to get it right.
It's all private and safe. I've been using it for years now. But allowing Google in only provides you with a better service.

So I admit - I had no real understanding of Bitcoin currency. So, because I browse spectrum.ieee.org I came across a relevant article and started reading -- which brought me to wikipedia.
And you know how that goes. Wikipedia hopping is a pastime that many people enjoy and I could do it for hours!
I am so vanilla, really - I know all this possibility from reading Science Fiction but as I'm clicking through the bitcoin Wiki I came across, altogether innocently, the article on the Deep Web (and also the article on The Silk Road, which I had no idea even existed until this very moment!) This of course pings my immediate interest -- not because I want to do any nefarious things. Not at all. But reading about these netherrealms on the 'net is utterly fascinating to me.

This began as a relevancy circle - and Google+ has a ton of use and info on my habits so actually it's very accurate. But I kept moving down my circles and picking people to add - people who might be new to me but who I have had a wonderful time engaging with them.
Some of these people only post rarely, some of them post a ton :) I follow Historians, Photographers, Artists, Thinkers and Rebels. Some of their posts might shock you. Some of their posts will delight you. Some of the people I added merely because I know them from engaging wildly well on my own threads and have come to know and like them that way.
142 people - some I know personally - some I just know here through this medium. But I am the better for it.

It's wet and humid in North Carolina for many months of the year. Quite tropical really. This wrought iron on our porch is 12 years old - it's about time it grew some proper algae ;) This was a day or so ago when it was raining.
I've been trying to figure out why some photographers here erase all metadata/EXIF information from their photos. No information at all in them. I'm curious as to why anyone would do that?

What is the best Cloud Backup service?
This is what I need:
(1) Echoing from an External Hard Drive to the Cloud
(2) Automatic Syncing (or easy 1 button click in an App is fine, too, like SyncToy, etc) that will only Echo the changes from External Hard Drive to the Cloud
I can use Dropbox for this, but because of the amount of Data I need -- it's $495/year.
What I'm asking is --- is this basically what I'm going to have to pay for a Cloud Backup?
I do not want: Bitcasa; it's cheaper but it is not secure. At all.
I do not want: Mozy/Backblaze/CrashPlan. I don't need a "oh gosh darn it my Windows blew up, I need it all back now" I know how to re-install windows if I have an internal HD failure. I don't need a "golly gee I don't know anything about computers" option. I also don't like how they... more »

Sometimes when it's dreary and you've got a lot of chores and just can't go out, you take photos of what's at hand.
This leaf isn't actually very big - it's just a Japanese Cherry. But I like all the striations in the leaf from the backlighting, it's like microbes in a raindrop - a reminder that our world, our universe, is awesome in the macro -- and the micro sense of the word.
Just writing this post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes of all time - and I don't mean to be posting a lame thoughtful quote with a photo, but it just got me thinking of it; by William Blake:

Just saw Star Trek Into Darkness this morning.
Loved it! I can't say much because I don't like to spoil anything. But I loved it.
I hear there is a bit of a hubhub around some people getting their noses out of whack because of the "alternate universe" they're using. Well, I'll be up front and say right now: I don't care. I love it all. I love the old original series. I love The Next Generation. I love Voyager. I've seen every film, even the really truly bad ones. I've even read some of the novels.
And I don't care in the remotest sense of the word about any changes or alterations Abrams' has made. I love that he's made it more "user-friendly" and more relatable to everyone. I love that these new films are bringing in new fans. I love it.

I've always been a Mozart fanatic - but Beethoven really seriously puts out the goods. Sublime doesn't begin to cover it.

Would have been nice if there were clouds that day - but you can't always get what you want. This is Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, right about Noontime. Driving out onto this meadow after meandering through a tree-covered bushy and claustrophobic marsh area was delightful. The sounds were amazing - it was quiet in the sense that there were no sounds of industry or humanity anywhere, but it was cacophonous with the sounds of birds and insects.
The birds were wily and fast and irritated by my car. Couldn't get a decent shot of one :)
Some day in the future I may try and take some photos of cloudscape and stitch them into this shot - it's a perfect canvas for it.
I wanted to go driving today to look for old barns/fences/sheds, etc. But they are always on private property. It's no fun not being able to sneak around someone's land to take pretty... more »

Well it seems the fear/worry over Auto-Enhance was a trifle anticipatory. Here is a side-by-side of a photo, SOOC on the left (Straight Out of the Camera)
By the way, it was really hard for me to let a SOOC shot be seen! LOL :)
On the right is the photo after Auto-Enhance and it looks just fine to me. You can tell what's happening; it looks like it's got a mild contrast happening, a teensy bit of sharpening and the slightest punch of color.
(For the camera nerds, like me, that left SOOC shot is 20k ISO. There is almost no noise, even at 100%. I'm salivating over this 1Dx <3)
So really - +Brian Matiash thanks for the correction yesterday - I'm glad we got it sorted and in all honesty it looks like Auto-Enhance is a quick fix that would be useful for nearly everyone, in all likelihood.

Okay so I wanted to see what Auto-Enhance would do to a painting - so I painted this, it's just a sketch really, I can't be arsed to spend more than a couple hours painting anything anymore. I get bored. :p
Anyway I could not let auto-enhance "fix" it, it saturated everything too much - so for right now I'm still leaving it off. This is not auto-enhanced at all.

This was from my weekend ranger-ing last Sunday. Many steps involved in getting the kind of crazy light happening, it involves blowing out your original and pulling in colors in Lightroom with the "Luminance" slider then split toning a black and white copy in Photoshop.
All that tinkering for fun, just to get something a little ghostly and spooky and moody. I find the little sign on it that says "home" the creepiest of all. o_o

Hmmm, interesting new way to share photos. Upload to an album first then share later. Instead of how it was before where it makes the post as soon as you upload. I think I actually like this a lot, as I can just fill my albums and organize and then share whenever I feel like it, from wherever I feel like it.

you probably want to uncheck these two boxes Or just the first one, if you don't want auto-contrast, brightness, noise-reduction settings done on your photo by Google+ automatically.
The second one just will make animated GIFs out of photos in a series. Or collages. Not really an issue.

Another shot of my roaming day yesterday. *Somewhere in North Carolina* and I couldn't really even tell you where we were. We just picked a direction and drove. It's become a fun little way to pass some weekends :) Next time I'll make my daughter come and be my model - this shot is just wanting a pretty girl in it, standing on the road.

Saw this last night. The Great Gatsby It was very good. Can't really spoil it, since the story has been out for 90 years. :) I loved it.
The CGI was dodgy in a few places, and that's really a shame - because there is no real excuse for that, but it was noticeable.
I thought it hit all the right notes.

So, this happened. *I recently turned 40* I said I'd do a pic when I did and here it is. I didn't airbrush anything and it should be big enough to see all my wrinkles and spots. My daughter said my wrinkles were all from smiling and so that's why they're still pretty. She is a sweet, lovely girl :)
I think this one I'm leaving up for good. I can be 40 forever. :)

It seems that a lot of people misunderstand the blocking feature.
I'm so well acquainted with this feature of Google+ that I thought I'd give everyone a little refresher course!
What blocking does (as in the image below - I used my husband's profile as an example, since he won't mind and I won't be blocking him LOL)
Blocking will only keep someone from commenting on your content.
Blocking someone keeps you from seeing THEIR posts in your stream, but if you never had them circled, you wouldn't anyway, so kind of pointless there Google but whatever.
Blocked people STILL SEE YOUR PUBLIC POSTS <-- most common misconception.
Blocked people are removed from your circles IF you had them circled to begin with. If you did not have them circled, obviously nothing happens.

Articles like this get zero play, so I've learned not to share them. No one likes them. Or very few people like them or are interested in them.
But stuff like this is where the good stuff is and where science fiction is becoming a reality, right in front of our very eyes. These are the places that I frequent on the 'net and what I am interested in (whom I follow is very different than who follows me, I have your usual suspects but the rest are all historians and scientists) and I really can't get enough of it.

Just got back from Iron Man 3 was quite fun, quite good! Stay til the end credits for a cute little scene as well. Marvel is always cool like that :)
I thought they did a much better than #2 which was a hack job, even for a popcorn flick like these. It is very hard to beat +Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark - his charm fills up the screen with every scene. Enjoyed ourselves, excellent cast, fun script belly full of popcorn and candy.
Saw it in IMAX 3D as well, not sure how much wasn't 3D but it was really lovely.

Everyone just totally assumed I'd head down to L.A. - hell, I thought I would, too. Until the specter of actually going down there loomed after graduation. I chickened out royally. But I'm glad I did. I love my life I have now. :)

I think 75% of the time I'm here I write comments and then delete them to not cause issues.
I mean, I warn people right on my profile. I have opinions. (But who cares, everyone does.)
But it's just not worth it most of the time. You don't even have to have a wild/crazy/mean opinion. It could simply be disagreeing. Still not worth it to bring it up.
Do you filter what you say on social media? I think it's a good idea.
