You would never think that a container ship travel could be that beautiful

Container ships. They're quite boring to most of us. But there can be incredible beauty in anything, I guess. Watch it travel across the seas at night.

I am still baffled about the glowing water. Are these algae?

Frequency Separation for Dummies in Photoshop
►  Read more at [ frb.li/zrfp5 ]

You may have heard of this technique called frequency separation where you magically separate the details in your image from the colors and tones to be able to manipulate both independently, right? It’s used a lot in skin retouching, and it really gives you incredible flexibility. But variants of this technique are also used in landscape and architecture photography to really accentuate the details of an image without introducing artifacts like halos.

Check out this post if you're struggling to understand Frequency Separation.

Mirrorless vs DSLR – What’s Right for You?

We’re seeing more and more videos from people who switched from a DSLR to a Mirrorless camera. That’s all fine, interesting and sometimes emotional, but is it really objective and helpful?

In this featured video by Matt Granger, he gives you an objective overview of the trade-offs you’re facing when you make the switch. Matt’s Point is this: For every benefit a mirrorless camera gives you, you will also lose something. Check out the video and the list that summarizes those trade-offs.

How to Fake a Long Exposure in Photoshop
► Read this post at [ frb.li/6eks4 ]

I bet you love long exposure photos. Who doesn't? But sometimes you discover just after you're back at your computer that a particular scene would have made for a great long exposure. Maybe you just did not realize it while you were at the location, maybe you had no ND filter with you to get those nice long shutter speeds and create a long exposure. Bummer! But maybe not all is lost here...

In this featured video tutorial, +Blake Rudis shows you how you can still create a long exposure effect in Photoshop from a regular (short exposure) photograph.

How To Digitally Blend a Single RAW file by +Jimmy McIntyre
► Read this post at [ frb.li/sgfk6 ]

Digital blending is a technique by which you blend selected regions of one photo with regions from another photo to combine the best aspects of both images. Of course, this is also possible for set of more than two images. One typical use case is manual HDR where you blend the well-exposed areas of each photo in a bracketed series of shots.

But digital blending techniques are not only applicable to multiple exposures. While that’s usually how these techniques are used, you can actually use the same technique to blend a single photo with itself, or rather, with a different version of itself. In the video below, Jimmy McIntyre shows you the basics of this technique.

How to Find the Best Lightroom Preset for an Image
► Read this post at [ frb.li/awzhb ]

If you have acquired some preset collections, it may not be easy to find the right preset for a given image. Usually, you will start at the top of the preset list and try each one. If you do this by pure intuition, you may quickly decide in favor of one preset, ignoring the rest of the list and then perhaps make some adjustments.

However, if you are more systematic, you will want to optimize the outcome of this entire process and find the best preset for a given image. But how do you keep track of the good ones, and how do you narrow them down to find the one you like the most? If you are after the best preset for a particular image, you need an approach for culling the list of presets and reducing it to the best candidates.

4 Non-Destructive Dodge & Burn Techniques by Photoshop Masters
► Read this post at [ frb.li/2nxwr ]

Dodging and Burning is one of the oldest techniques in photo editing. It has been there ever since the early days of film photography. The terms themselves actually come from the darkroom techniques of exposing some areas longer (burning) to make them darker and some areas shorter (dodging) to brighten them.

In Photoshop, there are many different techniques to dodge and burn an image. You may know the Dodge and the Burn tools that let you work directly on an image layer to darken or light areas selectively. The problem with the direct application of these tools is that they are destructive. How To Create A Dreamy Orton Effect by +Jimmy McIntyre
► Read this post at frb.li/vuutm ]

The Orton effect is visual effect that you can apply to your images to give them a nice glowing appearance. When Michael Orton invented this look, he would take two film slides - one in focus, the other one out of focus - and blend them. Today, applying this effect in Photoshop is quick and easy.

Jimmy McIntyre demonstrates how to do it by creating a duplicate of your images layer, setting the right blend mode and applying some Gaussian blur.

6 Power User Tips for Lightroom Presets

For a long time, I have dismissed the concept of using other people's presets in any image editing software. Originally, presets where intended to allow you to keep track of your own edits, and not as one-click shortcuts to copy someone else's style.

That's simply not how image editing works. Finding the best adjustments for any given image is a complex task, and it heavily depends on the nature of the image. Applying a tailor-made set of adjustments to another image - maybe even an image by another photographer - is essentially a random process: Maybe you're lucky enough to find one that looks nice on your images. But more often than not, it's not a fit!

That's why I think the 'industry' revolving around selling preset packages that seemingly allow you to edit a photo with a single click, is deeply flawed. But having said that, there are a number of ways in which presets can be very useful beyond merely keeping track of your edits. This is especially true for Lightroom, which has a very sophisticated ecosystem of presets. If you use those features in a clever way, they can really super-charge your post-processing work. In this post, I will give you 6 tips on how to achieve this.

How to Reverse-Engineer Lightroom Develop Presets

Lightroom Develop presets can be a rich source of information about other photographers’ processing style, and you can learn a lot about editing your images from analyzing someone else’s presets. To do so, you need a technique for reverse-engineering a preset. That is, you need a way of looking at the different components of a given preset individually to understand which settings actually make them work the way they do.

In this article, you will learn a simple but effective technique for doing this. Lightroom’s ability to turn on and off each section in the Develop settings will help you dissect a preset and possibly use only certain parts of it in your work.

Lightroom’s ability to turn on and off each section in the Develop settings will help you dissect a preset and possibly use only certain parts of it in your work.___

Wedding Photographer Slips, Snaps Shot on the Way Down

Did you ever wonder how to get that authentic look on your subjects face? Easy! Just fall flat on your face and don't forget to snap a shot while you're on your way down. ;)

PS: Take a second and study those faces. There's one person here that actually seems to feel more spiteful than the others. Can you spot who that is?

Another amazing example of the Nikon P900 Zoom capabilities

If you've ever pointed your DSLR with its kit lens at the moon to see how close you can get, you may still feel the frustration of that moment.

Here's what the Nikon Coolpix P900 can apparently do in a similar situation. Amazing!

The Black Card Technique - the cheap gradual ND filter alternative

If you have an ND filter, there is no need to get an additional graduated ND filter for darkening down, for example, the sky in your photos. A remarkably simple technique will allow you to mimic a graduated ND filter and even be much more flexible: Just use a black card and cover the respective parts during a long exposure.

Here's a video by +Hannes Nitzsche  to show you how it's done.

Assassins don't work for free! Why should you?

When you watch this video, it all sounds pretty hilarious and bizarre. But people will use very similar phrases to try and persuade you to do a photography gig for free... oops... sorry... for the exposure.

Remember: Working for exposure is paying off in rare cases. But generally, it does you more harm than good.

Just try to be awesome. It'll make you happier.

I have always admired +Trey Ratcliff for his positive attitude to life. He is one of those people who always sees the positive side of things, even if they are downright awful at first glance. That is the source of great joy, confidence and success in life.

Check out his recent TEDx talk. It's not so much about photography but about life itself. I guarantee you, you will go "yeah, he's right!" more than once.

When you're through watching it, just let it simmer for a minute. Don't rush off into your daily routine. Just let it sink in and ask yourself:

What is your attitude to life? And does it really make you happy?

Flickr introduces auto-tagging and fails miserably

What happens if you are trying to auto-tag millions of photos? Right, it fails and you're in big trouble. Flickr has introduced a new auto-tagging feature which assigns labels to photos automatically, without manual intervention.

Sometimes the level of stupidity of what are supposed to be industry leaders amazes me. Auto-tagging has never worked, and it will never work. It will assign hugely inappropriate and massively offensive tags in many cases which inevitably results in a immense backlash. And that's exactly what they got!

Flickr, please hire people who understand their job!
