I'm writing a fifteen page paper on slipstream fiction for a class, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. My favorite part so far (that still needs editing, but you get the point):
______________________________________________
Echoing Sterling, she states that "science fiction's history as a distinct genre may be approaching its end." Science fiction, it seems, it becoming a mode rather than a genre (Hollinger 1999).
These discussions and assertions leave one with a few questions whose answer may never be fully illuminated: First, is slipstream being subsumed as a subgenre into an evolving science fiction? Second, as mainstream literary writers are utilizing the tools of sf more frequently, is science fiction being subsumed into mainstream fiction? Trends certainly appear to be supporting both of these notions, creating an Ouroboros that make the labels in ... more »

Why I Totally Love Netflix, an essay.
So, Netflix has gotten a lot of flak. Remember when they wanted to split the DVD service into Qwikster? I don't think that was wrong; I think that was premature. You know how there's nothing on? I want to pose a question: How, exactly, is that different from cable TV?
All right, I don't know about you, but I was thinking: How many channels do I want to watch? Maybe five. How many shows do I want to watch? Ten. Fifteen.
And how do cable companies try to cater to me? They want me to subscribe to a package of a hundred channels (or more), and then they want me either to get a schedule and watch a TV show when it's broadcasted (a very old-fashioned idea, in my opinion), or get a DVR. Listen: I already have a hard drive and a computer. Stop trying to make my TV into one, you suck at it. (Sorry.)
It's... more »

Yo, +Adicus Garton, you spent much time with Coheed and Cambria? They're a sort of proggy SF hard rock/metal band. Start with their latest. I had to give them two tries, the first time they didn't take. Now, though, I'm growing awfully fond of them.

So, there's either a #glitchinthematrix or someone's #lost , 'cause the same lady has walked past the bar three times in the past ten minutes. The thing is, it's all been from different directions to different directions, and she's being very nonchalant about it.

I've just installed Synergy, so when I have resources open on both my laptop and my destop, and they're side by side, I can use my desktop's mouse and keyboard to control my laptop. It's ridiculously fun, and you don't have that silly brain lag where you try to use one to control the other in the middle of a bout of absent-minded productivity. It's #free , #opensource , #multiplatform , and #fun . Setting this up counts as productivity, right? #FOSS #imtotallyworking

We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.
A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.
Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?

Hang on, what? There's a media player that tries to tie together all your music subscriptions and collections with all the free music on the internet, to create smart, robust playlists? It also has a Pandora-like feature where you can seed tracks and adjust various aspects of your station on the fly? YES, PLEASE.
An added bonus:
“How does Tomahawk plan to make money?” asked an audience member at NY MusicTech Meetup.
Herskowitz replied, “We don’t.”
Audience member: “So, why do you….”
Herskowitz: “Tomahawk is an open source project that we work at out of the goodness of our hearts and a passion to solve this problem: All of the media players that have been around for 10 years were built to solve problems of 10 years ago. We don’t need [CD-R] label-makers, we don’t need to print CD cases, we don’t need to worry about a lot of things that old players like Winamp... more »
