I have been revisiting some images from 2009... Fun processing them using the tools / skills I have now, compared to the SOOC approach I had then.

Having been away for a while (did you miss me?) I arrived home yesterday to find my main desktop computer would not boot. The "primary hard drive" - c: - was corrupt!

Now, as I am an IT guy when I'm not taking photos, I had a backup of all my images and valuable documents, but have found a few things I had not backed up - luckily I have some data recovery tools and so far have been able to recover everything I need, but it has been a long, frustrating time which would cost a fortune if you had to pay someone to do.

Here is my essentials checklist, to make sure you do not have the same hassles if ever your system drive fails:

1) Do you have your system install disks? Some new computers do not come with them, but have a utility which will create them for you. The hidden install partition on the hard drive will be useless if the drive is dead, so make sure you... more »

Lots of flood debris on my way back from the Bundaberg region of Queensland. This is at Mingo Crossing on the Burnett River. It was claimed that this bridge would never go under water, but the last two years have proved that claim false (twice).

In the debris were #snakes, lots of snakes of different types, all venomous! Walking just a few metres along the bridge I spotted eight, but who knows how many I missed.

Those who regularly follow my images will know that I have a "bush block" up in central Queensland. Here are a few images from my neighbours up there - the road did not fair so well. The residents are isolated for a while at least.

This is in the head waters of the Burnett River, which is currently drowning the coastal city of Bundaberg.

You might have heard that the East Coast of Australia has been a bit wet lately. Here in Lismore the water peaked at 9.4m this morning, 30cm short of the official major flood level. The town's levee wall is holding, so damage here is minimal.

An Australian Brush Turkey chick. The "nest" is a mound tended mainly by the male. After the chicks are born they are on their own, receiving no help from the adults.

I'm planning to spend perhaps a week slowly making my way from Lismore, NSW to Bundaberg, Qld after Christmas. Anyone out there got any suggestions for great spots to camp at that are not so well known, and maybe not overcrowded given the season? Great photo opportunities would be a plus :)

We travel in a 4wd with a rooftop tent, and are completely self sufficient, so rough camps are fine.

My thoughts are with my American friends after last weeks tragic shooting.

You will now be hearing many arguments, sometimes very emotive, regarding #gun control. You have hard decisions to make, and perhaps a long hard road to implement those decisions.

I would say this to you:

Here, in Australia, we implemented tight gun controls about 10 years ago. It is said that we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world, but it is still possible to be a sporting shooter, and people who have a genuine need for firearms can get a weapon that is appropriate to their need, unless they have a history of violence.

I hear many people saying prohibition does not work, and I must agree with them. However, I would stress that gun CONTROL is not PROHIBTION.
