This house, with it's manicured trees and circular stones, looks so prim and perfect to me. A little nugget of suburbia from a bygone age.

Ready for another Saturday #CadburyKitchen creation? This one truly is da bomb... the Ice Cream Bombe! Here's how you can make one...

125g Bournville Plain chocolate, broken up
Method:
Prep time: 15 minutes plus 2 hours freezing time

Old news (about the organic food study from Stanford), but ignoring the Huffington Post's link-bait headline, I thought that this was interesting:
"Brandt wondered how the Stanford team, led by faculty from the School of Medicine and Center for Health Policy, could have found no difference in total flavanols between organic and conventional foods when her own results showed organics carried far more of the heart-healthy nutrient. Upon further inspection, she noticed that the team had actually calculated the difference in total flavonols, a different nutrient, and reported the result with the swap of an 'o' for an 'a'."
Food for thought regarding peer review's ability to catch errors. I didn't have any luck finding Brandt's full message to the Stanford researchers.

We're +NASA and We Know It
Here's a funny LMFAO parody dedicated to NASA that's making the rounds today. A sample of the lyrics:
“Shoutout to Carl the Sage (and) Neil Degrasse T (B.A.!)
Shoutout to JPL and the Rocker-Bogie
We’re better than SpaceX
And we ain’t afraid to show it (show it, show it, show it)
We’re NASA and we know it
We’re NASA and we know it”

Marilyn Monroe passed away August 5, 1962.
“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And babe, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole- and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. K... more »

Half-Aged
"This guy is a truck driver, 69 years old, who's been exposed to 25 years of direct sunlight thanks to his job--but only on the left side of his face. So we get a first-hand view at how much more aged human skin looks when bombarded with sunlight over the years."

The byte order fallacy. Please, forget everything you have been taught about programming with byte order and read this article. After years of saying this over and over, I finally wrote it down.

This is an amazing story. One of the largest electronic trading market companies, BATS, had its IPO today. It's self-referential enough when one of the few companies that actually runs an equity exchange places itself in that system in an IPO.
What happened next was ironically disastrous. This morning, just hours after the IPO, there was a software bug that affected all stocks with ticker symbols starting with A and half of those starting with B. The result was instant crashes of several stocks. Apple dropped over $90 a share before an electronic safeguard halted trading until the fault was removed, and BATS's own stock, only hours old, dropped from $16 a share to 3 cents.
The stock trading was halted and within just a few hours the company rolled back the IPO, essentially undoing all trades of its own stock made that day. It's unclear if they will be able to go public... more »
