[Why Do Men Keep Putting Me in the The Girlfriend Zone?]
Maybe it's time for a an Overly-Attached Boy-Friend meme...? ;) This girl seems to think so with this delightful and hilarious retort to men's "friend-zone" complaints:

So on point I want to bone this chick and play video games with her and start calling her my girlfriend. BECAUSE I HAVE A RIGHT. I WAS NICE TO HER.

[Sir Ken Robinson: ADHD is not an epidemic.]
"If you sit kids down, hour after hour, doing low-grade clerical work, don't be surprised if they start to fidget. Children are not, for the most part, suffering from a psychological condition. They're suffering from childhood."
Another great TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson. Some redundancy here with his other talks/books, but this is a message that bears repeating.
Do you see any progress being made with our educational system? What do you think is holding us back?

Excuse me while I climb out from under my cozy rock, because I honestly had no idea who Jennifer Lawrence was until watching this clip (other than me unknowingly using this gif of her all the time: http://bit.ly/YDWwWv), but I'm ridiculously in love with her after watching this video of her meeting Jack Nicholson for the first time and totally freaking the fuck out in the most candid, but cheeky way.
Bonus: this video of her interview-bombing Josh Hutcherson is equally priceless and hilarious: http://bit.ly/17KyR7h

["We're made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself."]
Sitting here under my covers wiping tears from my cheeks. Watching this hit me really hard in an unexpected way. The poetic beauty of it, most certainly, but more so my realization that science now feels like an estranged lover -- a partner I once knew so intimately, and admired with overwhelming awe, wonder, and reverence; my beloved I devoted myself to, committed to understanding and appreciating on every level, and had planned to spend the rest of my life with. It wasn't always easy, but we spent some of our best years together, finding ways to communicate even though we rarely spoke the same language.
Spanning more than a decade, we defied the odds and lasted longer than most marriages. It was the most challenging and rewarding relationship I've ever been blessed to be part of. ... more »

Waiting for the day that +Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, or even +Vic Gundotra and +Bradley Horowitz announce that everything we've been tirelessly curating to our profiles over the years is for the actual product they've been waiting to debut: a bound, high-quality printed scrapbook of our digital lives.

[The Art of Peacocking: How do you share your pride in your accomplishments without coming off as boastful or pompous?]
We all know that selling yourself is critical to career growth. And since many times our opportunities come directly from our friends and family ("It's not what you know, it's who you know!"), it seems even more critical to promote your successes to your immediate circles. You want them to know you're kicking ass and ready to tackle the next big thing!
And beyond the strategics, you should take pride in your work, have confidence in yourself, and be delighted when you can share your accolades with those you love. If you can't take a self-indulging moment to excitedly polish your own apple with the people that know you best and that care about you, with whom can you?
But the potential backlash to sharing your good news is... more »

+Jimmy Kimmel Live has pulled a lot of great stunts. But this... this is undoubtedly the best. Interviewer asks Coachella patrons about made-up bands. [For those who serve.]
About two minutes in I realized my mouth was full of half-eaten food. I'd stop chewing. I'd stopped breathing. "There's gotta be people hurt out there!" the cop had urgently screamed as he ran into the smoking rubble. I burst into tears.
But what kept striking me more than the horror of it all was my deep and sincere appreciation seeing those men and women in uniform fearlessly running into the carnage, ripping apart the barricades to storm through to the people who needed them right then, not giving care to the fact that another explosion could be on the way any minute, fighting the natural instinct we all have to run in the opposite direction to protect ourselves. Noble and brave don't begin to do it justice.

The other day I managed to find an incredibly awful photo of me from my awkward tween years. We're talking braces, crooked teeth, winged-out hair, chubby cheeks.. the works. I was thinking it would be fun to post it, but even more fun to post a picture of me holding it next to myself years later. [Rave is not a four-letter word.]
Hint: listen to the track all the way through! It builds!
Sometimes--most times--there is a moment in the night when a track comes on that reminds me of why fifteen years later, I'm still losing sleep to drag myself to dirty warehouses to dance until daybreak. Why I'm still doing my best to see the the scene's bright beating heart instead of the dark underbelly it sits atop. Why despite rotating through countless circles of friends as they dropped off, burnt out, and moved on, I'm still here standing in platform shoes and earmuffs, because it was never about that shit. Never about being the cool kid standing behind the DJ with drink in hand. It was always just me, the music, and the dancefloor. That's all that mattered.
And when that track comes on, I close my eyes, hold my hands over my heart, smile, and then reach my... more »

[Feel-Good Friday: Suspended coffees: a lesson in paying it forward.]
Seen floating around the interwebz today:
We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we’re approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter:
‘Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended’ They pay for their order, take the two and leave.
I ask my friend: “What are those ‘suspended’ coffees?”
My friend: “Wait for it and you will see.”
Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers - three for them and four ‘suspended’. While I still wonder what’s the deal with those ‘suspended’ coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the cafe. Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks... more »

I wonder if the songs and poems heard in our dreams are really as poignant as we think, or just gibberish our brain is interpreting as profound.
They're always so hard to remember upon waking.

[Is banning hugs part of the solution, or part of the problem?]
In light of the Newtown shooting, a Maryland school district is rolling out new rules that heavily restrict the type of contact adults can have with children on campus. Sounds well-intentioned enough, but this is taking things too far:
"A parent who is attending lunch recess can’t push a kid who isn’t her own in a swing or help a kid who scraped her knee put on a Band-Aid."
This is making me fucking outraged. Is this how we build communities? Is this how we care for one another and promote compassion and empathy? These types of restrictions on sharing love, tenderness, and caring with one another is exactly the type of shit that breeds lunatics wanting to run into a school and pop off a few rounds. We are moving so far away from solutions it makes me sick. We're only contributing to ... more »

Oh, from the mouths of babes. Most adults don't even have the confident humility to admit that.

It makes me violently sick how indistinguishable this Onion parody is from what just happened in the Ohio rape case: http://bit.ly/YmSifU
And as if rape wasn't bad enough, these men drugged and urinated on the sixteen-year-old girl. This is not a gray matter, or some type of "misunderstanding of consent." [The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows]
sonder
n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is perhaps the most romantic and moving collection of words on the internet. I think I've posted about it before, but every now and then I revisit it and am left breathless and inspired. [Mini-Memoirs: I wanted teardrops on my chest, not my pillow.]
I stood in the shower and prepared myself for my regular ritual, angling my body to face the sunlight in slight parallel, illuminating the silhouette of my pubescent figure against the plastic wall. I lightly pressed my index finger into the middle of my burgeoning breasts, forcing them into the perfect, perky circle I knew my anatomy was supposed to mimic. I stood for a moment, shifting side to side with my head tilted down, admiring the rounded figure that magazines and movies told me most other women had. But knowing my non-invasive alteration was transient, I released my finger with a defeated sigh, my breasts and spirits dropping in tandem.
Later that year I would repeat this routine while standing in my mother's living room in my new boy-short bikini, tears gushing from my eyes, wetting my bathing suit ... more »

[Mini-Memoirs: How I traded three slices of pizza for a duet with a homeless woman, and three of the best hugs of my life.]
I sat in my car as the sobs rolled through my body again and again like tiny earthquakes, shaking me and breaking me apart with each wave, too paralyzed to move. Exhausted after an hour, I wiped my face and reentered the world, careful to first cross the street to avoid the shadowy camp of a homeless person I'd noticed when I parked.
But before I got far, I heard her earnest voice rise up in the dark to accompany the melodic crooning of Vanessa Williams streaming out her handheld radio. "Sometimes the sun goes round the moon..." I felt a tug and crossed the street. I used to love that song when I was a girl.
"That looks like pizza!" the disheveled vagrant exclaimed, referring to the box of leftovers noticeable in my hand... more »

December, 2005:
"Ashok grabbed a porter donned in his bright red uniform and passed him some rupees along with our bags, which the porter then heaved onto the top of his head in one swift motion. In a flash and before I could even process what was happening, Adam and I were nearly jogging to keep up with this man as we were swept into a sea of bustling people. I felt a slight sense of panic like a child trying desperately to keep sight of his mother through a crowd, with only fleeting glimpses caught in between the screen of passersby to calm the anxiety. A flash of blue over the tops of heads and bright red in between shoulders and I knew that my backpack was still within sight and we were still moving blindly in the right direction on the heels of the porter.
"Meanwhile, flashing neon colors of vending machines, the melodic... more »
