Black & White Challenge Day 4: The Razor's Edge.

Another stunning Himalayan peak, this time in the Everest Region of Nepal. The Alpenglow was incredible, but in processing I wanted to strip away that and focus more on the structure of the mountain instead of transient light. #5dayblackandwhitechallenge   #blackandwhitechallenge   #himalaya   #wildme

Kiss of the Dragon - Sichuan, China

There are days that stick in your memory, years and years after the event - so much so, I can still smell the air! Juanli and I were in Yading National Park in a very remote corner of Sichuan Province. At the time it was a two day drive to get there.

We had a very basic room in a very basic guest house and had hiked high into the surrounding mountains - up to around 5000m.

In the late afternoon we saw a huge storm bearing down on us and we ran down a slippy trail to get back to the 4x4. We made it and managed to get to our room before the mother of all storms broke. Rain! Like you wouldn't believe!

Just as suddenly it started to clear; rainbows, unicorns, you name it. From our room in the valley our view was partially obscured, so I ran up the hill (no mean feat at that height!) and managed to get to a good view point as the... more »

Without a doubt, some of the best mountain light I have ever had anywhere.

Hope you like it...___

Time on my Side - They say your first time is always special, as it was the first time I went to Kirkjufel on the west coast of Iceland.

I'd been traveling on my own for 5 weeks, covering most of the island, sleeping in the back of a 4x4, or occasionally camping. I'd parked up at the waterfall and had a good sunset - I cooked myself a simple meal and hit the sleeping bag.

I was woken just after midnight with the inside of the car green - the rest is history - a long, wonderful night in the embrace of the landscape - magical.

Day 3 - The Spirit of Tibet.

One of my favourite photographs. Taken on the border between Yunnan and Tibet. Again, I feel mono was the only way to go with this image - stripping the image down to its raw components, abstracting the clouds with the long exposure and the few streaks of star trails. Spirits of Tibet.

Black & White Challenge Day 2 - Oh Canada.

Backlit maple leaves in the rain forests of Vancouver Island. In the color version, the yellows are overpowering and the overall green palette just too much. In black and white I like how the shapes take over and the strong luminosity of the leaves is isolated more.

Black & White Challenge Day 1 - Thanks to Steve Gingold for the nomination. I am not going to nominate anyone for my 5 days, as the majority of people I know have already done this.

Symphony of Light: I'll start with a favorite of mine. The thought of aurora over Kirkjufell, Iceland can set most hearts beating faster, but when I got my images home I was struck by how much I didn't like the combination of the greens with the landscape there.

By making the image black and white I sought to strike a more graphic and metaphorical image. Reducing the aurora to a streak of light across the arctic sky.

Back in Scotland now after 6 weeks in Western Canada - A highlight was surely the week we spent in the Mt Assiniboine region. The whole experience from helicoptering in to walking the trails at night with Grizzly Bears around was special. Many different experiences up here, with this moody black and white being just the start.
