Into the West - Scotland 2015

Having lived in Tibet for nearly a decade, returning home to Scotland I wasn't prepared to be as blown away as I have been.

I am so fortunate to live on the west coast where we get wild weather, wind, rain, but some of the best light I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Subdivisions - Beijing 2007

I met my wife in Beijing, and we lived there for quite a while as well. In 2007 we were again living in the city and I was struck by the extreme pace of the progress and modernisation in the city.

I set about documenting many of these new buildings and creating large multi-image abstracts of the city. My aim was to use the modern to comment on the destruction of the older, more cultural parts of the city - how the new buildings were re-defining the culture of China as a whole.

I was fortunate enough to have many of these prints exhibited in the prestigious 798 district of the city leading up to the 2008 Olympics.
These print out massive :-)

Brilliance... by +Alistair Nicol

Later today +Tommy White and I kick off Spring in Charleston.

Of course the weather has gone sideways on us, but that should create some very interesting light. Sunday morning's forecast is for a bone chilling 37 degrees. I'm not sure t-shirts and flip-flops will cut it.

Enjoy your weekend all and stay warm! :)

"Guiding Light"
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Outer Banks, North Carolina

I just returned from a much needed 10 day trip to the Outer Banks. +Tommy White and I kicked off the trip with our highly anticipated +Mountains To Sea Workshops  OBX Workshop with guest instructor +Athena Carey.  It was a blast and our group explored ancient lighthouses, dilapidated piers and marsh and dune scenes under some fantastic light. We also had some great meals together chatting about photography and laughing together. Good friendships were made and I hope that we all can stay in touch through the magic of social media and email before the next opportunity to meet again.
After the workshop my family moved our camp down from the Nags Head area to Frisco a little town in the heart of Cape Hatteras very near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. +Josh Carlisle  couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get away for a bit and drive the 9 hours for a few photographs so he met up with me and we headed out to photograph this iconic Light.

Stilts make such excellent subjects; the incongruity of their vast pink legs just makes them so cool. It took weeks to get this shot, lying in the mud every morning waiting for the sun/tide/bird combination to work out!

Hi all, Great to be accepted by the Community. I am a Scottish Landscape Photographer living up in the north west Highlands. I only moved back to UK in 2013 after over a decade in the Himalaya of Tibet and SW China. Good to be home. Excited to be involved in this group - looks like a great bunch of folks.

Cheers, Alister: Gairloch, Scotland.

Mt Kailash - Tibet 2009

I'd be lying if I said all images mean the same - this one means the most. I dislocated my kneecap at 17900 feet while trekking around the mountain and had a somewhat unpleasant 30km walk downhill back to the 4x4. I remember a lot of tears and a huge sense of loss and pain.

Making this image under Kailash on that pure, clear night, stood next to my dear wife Juanli will remain with me forever. Even full of painkillers it was special :-)

Hi all,

I've been a professional landscape photographer since 2009, but I actually started as a bird photographer. Birds have always been my passion and the only reason I don't photograph birds anymore is the process of getting great bird images ruined birding for me. Now I can go out and watch birds and enjoy it rather than feeling frustrated about light, compositions and bits of mud or imperfections of plumage. :-)

So, I have a bunch of bird images taken up to about 2007 which I'd love to share, but there are no new ones :-)

Hi everyone - new here and just saying hi for now. I've been shooting long exposures for over a decade, wrote the eBook Seeing the Unseen - How to Photograph the Landscape at Night and make fine art prints in the classic black and white long exposure tradition. I lived in the Himalaya of Tibet and SW China for over a decade, but now live, with my wonderful wife Juanli, in my native Scotland - far up on the north west coast of the Highlands.

Looking forward to contributing here and being involved with the community.

All the best everyone...

Elemental - Iceland 2015

After one of the coldest springs on Iceland in recent memory, there was still considerable snow lying around even in mid June this year.

Dettifoss waterfall is famous and often busy. The junction between snow, water and basalt was striking to me and I decided an abstract image in mono would best sum it up for me.

Kiss of the Dragon - Sichuan, China

There are days that stick in your memory, years and years after the event - so much so, I can still smell the air! Juanli and I were in Yading National Park in a very remote corner of Sichuan Province. At the time it was a two day drive to get there.

We had a very basic room in a very basic guest house and had hiked high into the surrounding mountains - up to around 5000m.

In the late afternoon we saw a huge storm bearing down on us and we ran down a slippy trail to get back to the 4x4. We made it and managed to get to our room before the mother of all storms broke. Rain! Like you wouldn't believe!

Just as suddenly it started to clear; rainbows, unicorns, you name it. From our room in the valley our view was partially obscured, so I ran up the hill (no mean feat at that height!) and managed to get to a good view point as the... more »

Time on my Side - They say your first time is always special, as it was the first time I went to Kirkjufel on the west coast of Iceland.

I'd been traveling on my own for 5 weeks, covering most of the island, sleeping in the back of a 4x4, or occasionally camping. I'd parked up at the waterfall and had a good sunset - I cooked myself a simple meal and hit the sleeping bag.

I was woken just after midnight with the inside of the car green - the rest is history - a long, wonderful night in the embrace of the landscape - magical.

One of my favourite photographs. Taken on the border between Yunnan and Tibet. Again, I feel mono was the only way to go with this image - stripping the image down to its raw components, abstracting the clouds with the long exposure and the few streaks of star trails. Spirits of Tibet.

Black & White Challenge Day 1 - Thanks to Steve Gingold for the nomination. I am not going to nominate anyone for my 5 days, as the majority of people I know have already done this.

Symphony of Light: I'll start with a favorite of mine. The thought of aurora over Kirkjufell, Iceland can set most hearts beating faster, but when I got my images home I was struck by how much I didn't like the combination of the greens with the landscape there.

By making the image black and white I sought to strike a more graphic and metaphorical image. Reducing the aurora to a streak of light across the arctic sky.

Back in Scotland now after 6 weeks in Western Canada - A highlight was surely the week we spent in the Mt Assiniboine region. The whole experience from helicoptering in to walking the trails at night with Grizzly Bears around was special. Many different experiences up here, with this moody black and white being just the start.
