Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117

Every weekday we run a different theme, open to the community to contribute to. Our philosophy is "ART IS FOR EVERYONE," and do not expect any level of skill from our participants. Have fun, make art.+Pocket Poem  : a page dedicated to resharing poetry submissions from the general public. If you write poetry, plus-mention our page to your posts and we will reshare them to the page so others are able to find poets to connect with.+Heaven And Earth  : a daily art theme "where sky meets land."+FLUXUS PORN  : the page is under construction, but we are hoping to create the atmosphere similar to that of a book club, geared toward the subject of "art & pornography" and will possibly be hosting a weekly discussion of pornographic film (viewed individually by members) with the intent of holding a discussion about the film among us after watching. if you are interested in helping us create content to fuel discussion, please get in touch with me: antiart@moanlisa.com2012-09-24 19:12:34181002

Enter the Gecko
I focus on shooting locations, but in between destinations there's a lot of shots taken casually. Here's a quick snap from Hilo, Hawaii.

Anyone else remember the Gex games (reffed in the title of this post)? Years ago, I used to wake up early before school to play this PS1 gem.

Japan in a Nutshell
I can verify that 2 years in Japan is only enough to crack the surface of this curious, endearing, and infinitely deep culture. Here are some of my top shots from my time there. Enjoy and share them around.

Anyone else been Japan and have fond memories? Where did you go? What did you do? I'm really craving some Japan stories right now.

The documentary about my end-to-end cycle tour of Japan one month after the 2011 quake just reached 1/4 million views. Thanks to all who've viewed it, this is well beyond the attention I expected it would get. I hope it helps people remember to set big goals and believe in them.

With camera already mounted, I had only a few moments to set the tripod and shoot.

5 seconds after this picture was taken: Officer Pants walks into the room. Awesome. He attempts to make friends by giving me the nick-name, “Sir-with-the-camera!” and explains that Bates Hall is not the Exit. I already know it, but let him finish to allow one last bracketed series of shots to click through. I apologized for holding him up and followed his directions to the exit.

Anyone else had interesting interactions with security recently?

Epic 3min Trip-Vid: 24hrs in Boston - 1142photos
( Full trip story and photos here: http://goo.gl/zHJNv )

Recently, my wife and I spent a very full 24hrs in Boston. We drove in on Friday evening (which is how I snagged that grim looking blue-hour HDR photo of Harvard Yard above) and then packed in as much as possible from 5:00am until sundown on Saturday. Why such a cramped schedule? Well, for one it’s more fun that way (arguable, I know); and secondly, Boston has so many photographic hot spots that it would feel like a waste not to.

Don’t miss the sub 3:00 minute photo montage video below to be amazed by our super-human stamina and see all 1100+ photo from our 24hr adventure ^_^.

HDR Before-and-After: Let there be Light ( details: bit.ly/bna-ltbl )

Take a look at the Resources section below if you want to learn the techniques.

Here is the before-and-after comparison of the image 'Let there be Light'. I posted the image yesterday (see here: bit.ly/gp-ltbl), and it was immensely popular. Thanks everybody!

In this illustration, you see the stages of its creation. It was created from 12 single exposures that where merged to HDRs and tone-mapped in Photomatix. After that, I stitched them together in Photoshop and did the post-processing.

If you're interested in the details, visit the before-and-after page at [ bit.ly/bna-ltbl ] and the photo page at [ bit.ly/fp-ltbl ]. There is tons more information on my website at [ farbspiel-photo.com ].

Where's the Butler?
(Making-of screen shots: http://goo.gl/9XJ0K )

To my chagrin, Marie Reine du Monde in Montreal does not have a public restroom. After inventing about an hour of uncomfortable shooting and I had also invented several very post-modern dance moves and decided it was time to go (in more ways than one :-). I briskly walked to the nearby Marriott hotel. This also provided Lori the chance to ask directions to beautiful Notre Dame while I visited the little boys room (tee hee). Upon my return, she was still wrapped up in conversation with the concierge and took the opportunity to photograph handsome staircase. It reminds me of the staircase in my future mansion that I’ll likely never buy, except this one doesn’t have a monocle wearing butler coming down it with a hot cappuccino. Ah well, nothing can be perfect right?

This image was a pretty straight forward Photoshop edit. In Photomatix, I made sure to keep the luminosity slider as low as possible to avoid losing details to the classic HDR glowy look. Also, in the Photoshop Edit screenshot (http://goo.gl/9XJ0K), you’ll notice the “Yellow De-sat” which selects the white stone in the stairs in the ceiling. In this HSL adjustment layer I dropped the Yellow saturation about 10 points in order to create a stronger emphasis on these elements since they create the dramatic movement in the photo.

One of my goals was for the final image not to be overtly “HDR.” So how do you think I did? Any areas that stick out to you?

The 30 Second Challenge - Approaching Post-Processing

Yesterday's series of intergalactic jellyfish (goo.gl/zk3wU) is slightly different than the usual Monday travel post on The Unframed World (as you'll gather from the Lightroom screenshots). However, allow me to talk about my approach to photogrpahy for a moment. Usually I only select the single, most beautiful photo from my travels, edit it for hours and post it with behind the scenes Photoshop screen shots. After last Friday’s interview with Japan photographer +Martin Bailey _(full interview link: goo.gl/FSsdF)_ I was blown away to learn that Martin usually only spends around 30 seconds per picture! He admits that there are better photographers out there, but at the end of the day his photos of Japan are still breathtaking and support him as a full-time professional photographer. That number, 30 seconds, stuck in my mind since I heard it. Even if I cut my average processing time in half, Martin still has me by over an hour (I bet I spend around 2.5 hours per picture) AND he has more images to share on his blog and podcast.

Do they all make it to his portfolio? No.

Is it ok that he shows the world some of his non-portfolio shots? I think so. In fact, I’m very glad he does because I loooove visiting his site to see them.

So back to this 30 second thing. Here I am sorting though my images from the New England Aquarium. I see several shots of jellyfish I like and my first thought is “I like these… but none of them stand very well on their own. Plus, there isn’t a whole lot to edit in Photoshop. I’d probably just use Lightroom and call it good.” So I pass them by. But then I think about Martin’s approach, and I also think about how my initial reaction to the photos was positive and also how I’ve been wanting to share more photos on this photo blog. So, I challenged myself to get out of my somewhat jaded, post-processing comfort-zone of meticulously massaging a single shot in Photoshop for hours.

I made 30 seconds per shot my goal.

I ended up caving and took about 15 minutes total for the whole batch… in one way I failed. But at the same time, this still means I ended up with an extra 135 minutes I don’t normally have AND more pictures to post than usual. The key though is that I’m still happy with the shots.

I really enjoyed this challenge even though it was quite difficult. In the future I hope to progressively become less jaded in my Photoshop-to-death mindset. Just because I have several tools in my tool bag, doesn’t mean I need to use them all every time, however most likely I’ll still spend more than 15min per image in the future.___

Post Processing – No Tone Mapping!?!?!

This week I took the No Tone Mapping Challenge! Sounds like a real competition right? Haha! I made it up just now, but I’m glad it was convincing. But no, I didn’t even open Photomatix for this shot. It’s all old school Photoshop masking and adjustment layers. The reason for doing this was to make sure I wasn’t going soft and relying on Photomatix or my standard HDR workflow too much. Also, because “HDR” tone mapping programs are basically just a time saving tools. Their algorithms distribute contrast and value over an image just as Photoshop allows you to do by masking Curves adjustment layers. Of course, I’m all about saving time, but in many cases Photomatix blind algorithms add glow and noise and sacrifice detail. To make a long story short, this shot is not “HDR” and I’m okay with that.

What’s your take on HDR? I’m curious to know how others are implementing it in their photography. Any plug-ins you can recommend? I use Photomatix but don’t have any experience with the others. Fill us in on your workflow in the comments.

Last month I received a direct mailer for architectural photography from Olson Photographic. Although my architectural photography needs were all set, the photo was too good to ignore. After being thoroughly wow’ed by their portfolio site, I just had to have them on The Unframed World.

THE JAPAN BY BICYCLE FILM IS COMPLETE!
Watch the 60 sec trailer.

To celebrate the 2 year anniversary of crossing the finish line of Japan by Bicycle, I've released the full film and 300+ page eBook for free at JapanByBicycle.com. This 3500km end-to-end cycle run across Japan I took with Scott R Keenan and Dylan Gunning 1 month after the 2011 earthquake was the most awesome adventure I've ever been on. Hopefully the film and eBook inspire people to dream big.

Enjoy and please share it with anyone you know who is obsessed with Japan.

A few crazy Japan by Bicycle stats:
Total distance: 3,518 km
Hours pedaling: 175 hours, 1 minute (according to odometer)
Days taken: 43
Final crash count: Andrew: 4; Scott: 3; Dylan: 0
Total nights camping: 25. Dylan had 26 since he camped every night on his solo trek of Shikoku.

Super Secret Photoshop Technique: Non-Destructive High Pass Sharpening!
Ye be warned: This is a highly nerdy intermediate article discussing how to use the High Pass filter in Photoshop to sharpen images in a reversible non-linear way.

**How the High Pass Filter Works**
Picture the Earth as Al Gore does, with melted polar caps. All that’s left above water are the peaks of the highest mountains, and ridges like the Rockies appear as lines. To make a long-distance connection, the High Pass filter works like this. In this example, if altitude were contrast ratios, then the ocean would be the High Pass filter. Think about it for a second… Yep, that was too confusing wasn’t it?

**How the High Pass Filter Works**
Picture the Earth as Al Gore does, with melted polar caps. All that’s left above water are the peaks of the highest mountains, and ridges like the Rockies appear as lines. To make a long-distance connection, the High Pass filter works like this. In this example, if altitude were contrast ratios, then the ocean would be the High Pass filter. Think about it for a second… Yep, that was too confusing wasn’t it?

In general, a high pass filter blocks lower frequency contrasts while accentuating higher ones (hence the name). High Pass filters are used in a variety of fields other than photography such as audio engineering, electronics, and physics. With digital imaging, specifically in Photoshop, it adds saturation to high contrast areas to give them more definition. At smaller radii, the resulting image looks like a colored contour line drawing on a grey background of the original photo.

Still confused? No worries. You don’t actually need to know how the High Pass Filter works to use it effectively.

**The High Pass filter as a Non-Destructive Sharpening Tool**
Around the net, there are several other tutorials explaining how to sharpen images using the High Pass filter. Sadly, very few of them explain how to do so in a way to allows you to adjust the filter after the fact. All you hardcore Photoshop nerds out there already know where I’m headed, but don’t tune out yet as I have a few other tricks up my sleeve. Let’s jump into the tutorial.

Step 1) Edit the the image in Photoshop until you’re ready to sharpen

Step 2) With a visible layer selected, use the “monster shortcut” Shift+Cmd+Alt+E to merge all the visible layers into a new layer on top of all the others. If it isn’t already, move this new layer above all the others (Shift+Cmd+])

Important to note: this is not Shift+Cmd+E which will merge all visible layers and leave you with your edits baked in for good.

Step 3) Right-click this new layter and select “Convert to Smart Object.” This is allows us revisit our soon-to-be-implemented High Pass settings anytime and makes this workflow reversible or “non-destructive.”

Step 4) Convert the layer blending mode to “Overlay.” You can do this after applying the filter, but if done before, you get a real-time preview of how each radius diameter impacts the image. Progressively accentuating image definition more intensely, these are the other blending modes I’ve seen other respected photographers use with success: Soft Light, Hard Light, and Linear Light.

Step 5) Apply the High Pass filter (Filters > Other > High Pass). When sharpening hi res images, my radius usually lands between 1-3 pixels. You can tell you’ve followed the directions correctly if your image looks sharper and if the thumbnail of the layer is grey. Be sure to zoom in to 100% and use the hand tool (H or hold spacebar) to bring an area of the photo you want to sharpen to the center of the screen.
Step 6) Add a black & white adjustment layer, and then alt+click on the line between it and the High Pass filtered layer to apply the b/w adjustment layer only to the High Pass filter layer. This removes unwanted distortion created from the saturation added by the High Pass filter. I use the b/w adjustment layer for it’s ease & flexibility. 85% of the time I just hit “auto,” but if I notice a pesky odd tone I can isolate and alter it using the b/w adjustment layer sliders.

**TROUBLESHOOTING**

Over-Sharpened Areas
If there are local areas you don’t want sharpened, add a layer mask to the High Pass filtered layer and use a soft brush, set to a low opacity (20-40% is where I start), to blend in the original image.

Removing Halos
When Photoshop sharpens an image, it basically makes the contrast more pronounced by darkening and lightening the area being sharpened. Naturally a slight halo is produced, often it is imperceptible and unobtrusive. When it becomes over pronounced, however, it becomes an eye sore. Depending on your image and workflow, this tutorial might have introduced some unwanted halos, especially if you used an Unsharpen Mask somewhere during editing. The best solution I’ve found for this came from this post by fellow Maine-based photographer +John Paul Caponigro on Google +. I’ll let this photo master explain his method in his own words”

“Double-click the [High Pass filtered] layer and use the Blend If sliders to remove the effect from near black and/or near white values. Start by moving the This Layer highlight slider to 235, holding the Option/Alt key and splitting the left side of the slider to 215; finish by moving the This Layer shadow slider to 25, and holding the Option/Alt key, split the right half of the slider to 45.”

**Even More with the High Pass Filter**
Playing with masks, varying blending modes, & radii will also open up a Pandora’s box of other possibilities using the High Pass filter. You’ll quickly find that it isn’t just used for sharpening. The ability to pick out, control, and affect feathered areas of varying contrast is a powerful tool. A lot of retro and vintage looks are now within your grasp, but more importantly you have another killer piece of ammo at your disposal when creating your own techniques. So go nuts and have fun!

Wow you made it to the end! You get a prize! It's this picture: http://goo.gl/71sEN ^_^

He's managed to accomplish what every photo bloggers dreams of doing. He is fully supported by his photography. As he describes in the interview, it didn’t happen overnight and it wasn’t easy. Hearing him talk about how everything evolved, his life abroad, and insight into his photographic process really motivates me to keep pursuing my own path with a fresh determination.

Hopefully it will do the same for you. And ya… the Japan photos helped a lot too. Thanks again Martin. Keep it up!

Series like this really push my boundaries as a photographer. Thanks +John Paul Caponigro and happy weekend everyone!

I Love Color
I Love Color

I love color. I love it because it's exciting and energizing. I love it because it's physical and sensual. I love it because it's emotional and expressive. I love it because it's interesting - scientifically, historically, socially, psychologically. I love color because you can look at it literally, abstractly, or symbolically. I love color because it has a rich history and diverse cultures and people have done such different things with it, but somehow I can connect with most of the things they've done with it, even if I don't have the same culture or language. I love color because it's a language that we can all do so much with.

Do you love color too?

What will you do with color today?

(Don't think for a second that I don't like black and white or gray; they're some of my favorite colors!)

Sapphire Dreams || The Exquisite Marina Bay, Singapore

My trip to Singapore was a complete success on many levels. Not only was I able to capture some beautiful imagery while enjoying the spectacular iLight Event, but I also made some great new friends and contacts in the process. When you combine the compelling beauty of Singapore with the openness towards photography you get a very special city. As a traveler, I’m often forbidden from shooting areas with a tripod but Singapore seems to welcome it. It’s an absolute pleasure to walk the perimeter of Marina Bay and find dozens of photographers shooting with tripods and enjoying the fantastic spectacle of light.

Thank you to everyone for making me feel so at home in Singapore and a very special thank you to my friend +Edward Adios for making all this happen. I’m already looking forward to my next visit in June. :)

I focus on shooting locations, but in between destinations there's a lot of shots taken casually. Here's a quick snap from Hilo, Hawaii.

Anyone else remember the Gex games (reffed in the title of this post)? Years ago, I used to wake up early before school to play this PS1 gem.

From +Jay Patel himself on HDR and a link to to his (and +Varina Patel's) iHDR workflow. Good points and great share.

#AlbumTheme: High Dynamic Range Images
#landscapephotography , #hdrphotography

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photographs...People either love it or hate it and some just mute the post when they hear about HDR :-))). Most obvious use of HDR is to manage extreme tonal range as seen in the image from Grand Canyon.

The question often come up "When is it necessary to manage tonal?" In today's world it is more often than we would like. I have used iHDR workflow (manual blending workflow developed by +Varina Patel and I) to capture images in total Darkness with light painting, during middle of afternoon at Yellowstone & Glacier, to photograph birds in Everglades, at Moraine Lake in Canada and the list goes on.

I have arranged first 30 images in this album to showcase High Dynamic Range images. How many would you have recognized at being a high dynamic range images?

Here is a brief overview of iHDR workflow: http://www.photographybyvarina.com/photography/videos/ihdr-workflow-overview

Enjoy & Share.

I want to return to Japan and make videos like this.
日本に戻って、このようなビデオを作りたい。

Well done Alex Lee

(Shared publicly, but also specifically with my "日本語分かる人" circle since I bet some of these sights will be familiar to you.)

Chinese tourists vs +Elia Locardi. Good story.

To The Heavens || Beijing

This serene and empty view of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing was one of the trickiest locations I’ve ever had to shoot. It took me 2 visits to capture it but thankfully my perseverance (and rigid stubbornness) paid off.

I’ve always had a secret weapon for minimizing crowds and capturing my scenes free and clear of people. It may seem simple but all it takes is getting up early. I know it sucks getting up before the sun rises but it assures that you arrive at the location way before the tour busses do. It’s worked in every country I’ve visited except for China. All I have to say is, HOLY SHIT can those people get up early.

At the Temple Of Heaven Park, the tour busses were rolling in at 6:30am. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. In Europe for example, the earliest I’ve seen a tour bus show up is 8:00am, which -- in most cases -- is plenty of time after sunrise and AM Golden Hour.

So, to make a long rant short, I shot this just before the Temple of Heaven closed. This was captured literally 2 minutes before the uniformed guards blew the whistle on my little operation. I’m not speaking metaphorically either, they were actually blowing whistles at me.___Chinese tourists vs +Elia Locardi. Good story.

This is a step in the right direction, but what I really want is some sort of online storage that can hold several TB of files so I can back-up my photo archive to someplace safer than external HDs in my closet.

Google releases "Google Drive"

Watch out drop box...Google Drive is here. If Google is getting into cloud storage...consider me curious.

It was my pleasure to curate the theme with +Lucille Galleli & +Ken McMahon. We had another fantastic week of entries, thank you all! We tried to view and comment on everyone's entries (especially if you mentioned us directly in the post), and it was also great to see a lot of community involvement in the comments of each image. Keep up the community support!

Hopefully this circle includes everyone that contributedto Wide Wednesday Panorama this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme.

Thanks for joining us! See you next week.

Note: we want to be up front. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is a temporary circle and we can't keep everyone in the long term. We will keep people that have circled us as long as we can but, we may need to drop some of the people that added us.
