We'll stream multiple telescopes into a Google+ Hangout, and show you the night sky. Learn about telescopes and astrophotography from the people actually doing it. We'll also have research astronomers on hand to explain the science behind what you're seeing. Is there a specific object you'd like to see? We'll even take requests. Virtual Star Party - July 1st, 20122012-07-02 06:00:00220

Wish there was a way to block people from inviting me to events. Or to only see invites from specific people/circles.

I don't need a half-dozen events I'm not attending on my calendar (since they end up there with a "no" response, anyway). And having to delete them, when I didn't really want them in the first place, is... well, it feels like spam.

This issue came up on a large FB group I'm in. Someone was complaining about the GM asking her to take care of setting up game sessions; this player felt that doing so was the GM's responsibility. But that doesn't have to be true.

The GM, as +Marc Plourde mentions, already has plenty of responsibilities outside of the game session proper. It's perfectly reasonable for them to delegate out-of-game needs, like scheduling, food planning, and transportation, to others.

A GM may well spend 30 minutes prepping for every hour of game time; for many groups, that means the GM is already spending two hours more than the players. Ideally, this is work the GM enjoys, but it's still work.

So, be considerate. Be the player you would want to have at the table. (This is broadly applicable to life, too: Be the friend you'd want to spend time with, like the ones who... more »

Someone on That Other Social Network asked how folks imagine fantasy racial languages would compare to real-world languages. It was a fun exercise, so I thought I'd pitch it here.

To me:

Common is Esperanto.

Elvish is Welsh.

Dwarven Is German.

Orc is Arabic.

Halfling is Portuguese.

Gnome is Russian.

I liked it.

Spoilerish bits:

Plot felt a lot like the early movies (find the Supersized Death Star, blow it up; also, there's some father-son drama). And Rey is Kaylee ("Machines just got workin's, and they talk to me").

+Marc Plourde's put together an in-depth Cypher System conversion document for Fallout 4.

http://inspstrikes.blogspot.com/2015/12/nuts-bolts-57-atom-bomb-baby-fallout-4.html?m=1

I haven't played Fallout 4 yet myself, so there's little I can say one way or the other about its accuracy. One alternative I'd consider, though, is to the way radiation is handled: Instead of reducing a single Pool's maximum by 1, I'd reduce every Pool's maximum by 1.

Or, another way to do it is to add a Radiation score: Once it reaches your lowest Pool's maximum, you're always impaired; once it reaches your middle Pool's maximum, you're always debilitated; and once it reaches your highest Pool's maximum, you're dead.

It's looking like I'll be running a 5e game online for a friend, his wife, and a couple of their friends.

Guess I should learn the system. o_O

I do have a couple house rules I'm planning to implement.

"But wait! You haven't played the system! You shouldn't use house rules yet!"

Calm down, Imaginary Person. Neither house rule is mechanical in nature. The first has to do with character creation; the second deals with alignment.

1. Ability Score Generation: Pick class and race. Assign 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 however you wish. Then, roll 3d6 in order and take the higher of the assigned or rolled number. Then, apply racial modifiers.

2. Alternative Alignment (from Pathfinder Unchained): The alignment axes get expanded to have values of 1-9.

Good (1-3), Neutral (4-6), Evil (7-9)

Lawful (1-3),... more »

Good (1-3), Neutral (4-6), Evil (7-9)

Lawful (1-3), Neutral (4-6), Evil (7-9)

Characters start at a 5s on the scale (yes, every 1st-level character is Neutral). Racial tendencies can shift those to a 4 or a 6.

Dwarf: Law/Chaos 4, Good/Evil 4; dwarves tend to be lawful and good.
Elf: Law/Chaos 6, Good/Evil 4; elves tend to be chaotic and good.
Halfling: Law/Chaos 4, Good/Evil 4; halflings tend to be lawful and good.
Human: Law/Chaos 4-6, Good/Evil 4-6 (player's choice); humans can fall anywhere on the alignment spectrum.
Dragonborn: Law/Chaos 5, Good/Evil 4 or 6 (player's choice); dragonborn tend toward the extremes of good or evil.
Gnome: Law/Chaos 5, Good/Evil 4; gnomes tend to be good.
Half-Elf: Law/Chaos 6, Good/Evil 5; half-elves tend to be chaotic.
Half-Orc: Law/Chaos 6, Good/Evil 5 (or 6 if raised among orcs); half-orcs tend to be chaotic (those raised among orcs tend to be evil).
Tiefling: Law/Chaos 6, Good/Evil 5; tieflings tend to be chaotic (while many are evil, they are not naturally inclined to be).

Alignment thereafter will be governed by character action at times of moral challenges and dilemmas.___

Started reading the 5E PHB tonight. Got through the monk entry.

It's interesting to see different design decisions for different races and classes. For instance, humans don't get subraces, and I was half expecting to see at least location-based customizations. And elves have darkvision; low-light vision is no more.

There are some implications of giving some races advantage on saving throws that used to get a bonus: those races are more likely to succeed at those saving throws than races without advantage, but they must succeed or fail within the same scale of numbers. Before, my dwarf could roll a 19 on his Fort save, and his +2 to saves vs. poison meant he'd still succeed against a DC 21. Now, that DC is out of reach (save for the auto success of a natural 20).

Classes also have a variety of developmental differences. Many are given two paths to choose from at level 3, but the fighter and monk have three. Meanwhile, the cleric has none, but he gets a domain choice at level 1--and only one domain choice, down from two in 3.x.

I'm not making any judgments on these observations until I've had a chance to play the game. These are just what stuck out at me going in.

And of course, many thanks go to +The Rpg Academy and AcadeCon for giving away the prize in the first place. ___

+Moe Tousignant's recent post about purchasing Star Wars prompted me to add it to my holiday wish list. But then I thought, "There are so many variations of these movies--original, remastered, Han Shot First edition. Which one should I add?"

So, with that, is there a visually remastered edition that does not screw up Han's bar scene--an edition that only updates the visuals and doesn't change significant story elements?

Thanks!

With less than TWO HOURS LEFT to run, The Strange Bundle is a spectacular success -- already our second-bestselling offer ever, behind the June 2014 PARANOIA Bundle. You can still get this huge collection, as big as the Chaosphere itself (well, almost), featuring Bruce R. Cordell's recursion-spanning Cypher System RPG from Monte Cook Games. In addition to The Strange corebook, you also get the Player's Guide, In Translation: The Strange Character Options, Swordbreakers, Worlds Numberless and Strange, the Bestiary, The Dark Spiral, the GM Screen, Eschatology Code, The Estate Dossiers, and When Worlds Collide (the guide to converting between The Strange and Numenera). It's everything you need -- really, almost everything there is -- for your own campaign across a zillion pocket dimensions, including every single RPG campaign setting you've ever seen.
