Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117
Dustin W. Stout18,157Actively Engaging Plussers07/15/13This weeks edition of #muchbettermondays  is a refined group of people who have in some way enhanced my experience here on Google+. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how many followers you have-- what matters is the relationships you build. The people in this circle have in some way engaged me in conversation and this is my way of saying thank you! So add this circle and see if you can find any valuable connections because of it!  #sharedcircle  2013-07-15 23:23:56188281218
Moe „Gilvan Blight“ Tousignant3,567It's been a while since I've shared one of my RPG circles. Here are a bunch of awesome gamers who's G+ names happen to start with the letter J. Seems J is a popular gamer first name :) These are Games Masters, Writers, Artists, Podcaster, Bloggers,  Edition Warriors, LARPers or just plain old fans of Role Playing Games. If you choose to add this circle why not say hi?  Just toss all of them into a "new gamers" circle, send a message out to that introducing yourself and then move them into whatever sorting system you have. #circleshare  2012-11-30 19:05:484591304

Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307
Alex Diaz (alexdiazeco)2,406Do you have a green circleSo many of you have joined since the last time I shared this circle that I think it's about time to reshare it. If you don't have a green circle of your own, feel free to adopt this one and keep adding people of like mind to it. If you think you should be in it, please let us know so we can all add you.Unfortunately, G+ doesn't let us share more than 500 at a time, and this circle is considerably bigger, so many of you were left out, and there's no way to know who it was without going one by one, which I lack the time to do right now.Still, the share serves a high purpose, so here it is.2012-04-07 18:57:54500030

Alex Diaz (alexdiazeco)891Here's my green circle. I share it so you can add yourself to it if you're so inclined and share it on to your circles. The goal is for it to snowball into the biggest or one of the biggest sustainability circles on G+, with the bigger goal of spreading the message far and wide. Let's make sure everyone gets in, the big names and the anonymous ones. It's starting out with many of both. So let's do it.2012-01-04 03:41:1233924910

"Although many people have talked about how fun it is to read, Ptolus wasn’t meant to be read, it was meant to be used. You need to read about 30 or 40 pages of material and then you’re ready to run your first adventure, which is included in the book. It doesn’t follow the same format as most setting books. It was modeled instead on travel guides. You’ll find throughout that all key terms are highlighted in a different color with a page reference right there to guide you where you need to go for more information. So you don’t have to memorize all the names of people, places, and groups and where they are described in the book. You’ll always know.

RESOLVED

Hi there!

I have a super-new-guy question. I'm looking through the newly released 7th Edition Rulebook, and on pages 57+, skill headers have a percentage next to them (for example, Accounting (05%)). Why? Can someone point me to a page number that explains that?

Thanks!

Edit: I see there is an example on page 78 which suggests those percentages are the starting values for the respective skills. Is there a rule that specifies that?

Edit edit: Ah, there it is. Page 36, last sentence of the first paragraph. While I tried searching for "base value," it is described here as "base chance" and "base number."

Thanks to Anibal Delgado over on the 7E Kickstarter's comments section for pointing me to it.

+Monte Cook Games offers pads of character sheets for The Strange, but we don't currently have the option to purchase pads of recursion sheets (the ones that fold over the base sheet).

Is this something you would be interested in seeing?

Edit: It has been pointed out to me that The Strange character sheet pads aren't available for sale on the MCG store yet!

After talking with +James Walls about his Thanksgiving game, in which his players play fictional characters recruited by the Estate from their relevant recursions, I thought it might be fun to see how different such characters might be statted.

So I'll start with Parker from Leverage: A Guarded vector who Moves Like a Cat.

Hi folks! I just joined the community after backing the Masks of Nyarlathotep props Kickstarter, and I had a question:

As someone who is entirely new to Chaosium's CoC game system, how difficult would it be to convert Masks of Nyarlathotep (4th Edition) to CoC 7E?

Thanks!

I added this as a comment to this post earlier: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104178909261627021161/posts/bA4SJn8Qogc

And I had a Twitter monologue about it here: https://twitter.com/WatchtowerNorth/status/530820155316916226

I think it's worthy of its own post.

Please, spread it around. Maybe it'll get some traction:

New idea: Put every single person who runs and gets at least 1 percent of the vote into Congress.

Their votes on legislative issues count as a percentage of a vote equal to the percentage of the vote that they got while running. So that Green Party dude who gets 2% still gets to represent folks, and his vote counts as 2% yea or nay on everything.

Also, we establish a universal rate of pay for Congresscritters. They get a percentage of that pay equal to the percentage of the vote they got in their most recent election.

Devil's Spine spoilers (minor)!

Last night, my players made the transition from Viral Transmissions to.... one of the next sections whose chapter title gives something away. :-P On the journey from Devola to Uxphon, I tossed a flying elchin their way.

These little guys are a lot of fun (and I was vindicated in my belief that they look like a pokemon)! For those unfamiliar with them, they can jump huge distances, and they can make all sorts of different noises.

Sadly, the characters didn't roll well enough to recognize it or know anything about it.

Basically, this critter had a carcass nearby, and it attacked the characters for getting too close. It managed to bite one of the characters, but being outnumbered, its health got whittled down until it jumped away again. It managed to bite one of the characters, but being outnumbered, its health got whittled down until it jumped away again. It started making some chattering sounds, then slunk behind a rocky outcropping... and the chattering sounds got much louder, like there were several more of the things hidden nearby. And then the pounding sound, like many galloping, hooved creatures, started.

The characters elected to take the long way around the suspected nest of critters.

But there was just the one.

Bwahahahahaha.___

I've been letting my basal ganglia slowly put together an alternative Cypher System hack, in which cyphers are magical abilities instead of items, and magic is so predominate in the setting that everyone has some ability to cast spells.

I may have settled upon the type names: rune, glyph, and sigil.

Runes are the simple casters (glaive/vector analog) with the most limited access to cyphers.

Glyphs are learned casters, who can use the greatest number of cyphers.

Sigils are wild casters. All of their cyphers change after each recovery roll.

Still teasing out ways to better differentiate the types.

As a result of last night's #ObsidianMonolith game, run by +Lex Starwalker, I was looking at the Trading Damage For Effect rules.

Turns out, there's a critical bit that I've been overlooking.

To determine the amount of damage you must sacrifice from a single attack, consult the following table, and add the amount for the desired effect to the foe’s level. For example, if you want to impair a level 5 monster, you’d have to sacrifice 12 points of damage from an attack (7 plus 5).

I've seen a few people talking about Ello. What does it do that my three current social networks do not?

I get that its focus is on privacy. How does it do that more than G+?

Edit: I read this +Salon article discussing it, and aside from not having to use a real name (which may be a policy +Google+ got rid of; it was never of much concern to me), I'm still not seeing the point. http://www.salon.com/2014/09/26/hello_ello_what_you_need_to_know_the_new_social_network_stealing_users_from_facebook/

It could be that it just needs time to develop. Once its out of beta, maybe I'll give it a shot. Until then, I really don't need a fourth social network.

This is a thing worth having.

"Take the Dark Reliquary, an evil fortress within the city’s huge cemetery. You don’t have to read that chapter when you first get the book. You don’t read it until the PCs decide to go there. But when they do, the entire place is mapped out and described for you. That’s the huge advantage of Ptolus. It is an entire campaign already all prepared for you. In fact, there’s more there than you can even use in a campaign, or perhaps even two -- that’s so the players have plenty to choose from. Long story short, Ptolus isn’t just a big book. It’s a carefully designed reference for you to use." (Monte Cook):
