Fraser Cain950,823Come join our weekly *Virtual Star Party*, held right here on Google+ as soon as it gets dark Sunday night on the West Coast of North America. We'll stream multiple telescopes into a Google+ Hangout, and show you the night sky. Learn about telescopes and astrophotography from the people actually doing it. We'll also have research astronomers on hand to explain the science behind what you're seeing. Is there a specific object you'd like to see? We'll even take requests. Virtual Star Party - July 1st, 20122012-07-02 06:00:00222

Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117
Dustin W. Stout18,157Actively Engaging Plussers07/15/13This weeks edition of #muchbettermondays  is a refined group of people who have in some way enhanced my experience here on Google+. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how many followers you have-- what matters is the relationships you build. The people in this circle have in some way engaged me in conversation and this is my way of saying thank you! So add this circle and see if you can find any valuable connections because of it!  #sharedcircle  2013-07-15 23:23:56188281218
Seppo Alaruikka6,603Renewable energy circle - January 2013Now that Google Plus has introduced communities, the role of circles has become weaker. Nevertheless, here comes the January 2012 edition of the renewable energy circle. The circle for example consist of people and companies interested in development of various kinds of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power. Some of these people simply know very much of energy production from other sources. They all are worth knowing. The circle never is complete. If you are missing, sorry about my bad bookkeeping and let me know about you.The hashtags used are #renewableenergy , #windpower , #solarpower , #hydroelectricpower , among others2013-01-31 11:36:0587306
Moe Tousignant3,567It's been a while since I've shared one of my RPG circles. Here are a bunch of awesome gamers who's G+ names happen to start with the letter J. Seems J is a popular gamer first name :) These are Games Masters, Writers, Artists, Podcaster, Bloggers,  Edition Warriors, LARPers or just plain old fans of Role Playing Games. If you choose to add this circle why not say hi?  Just toss all of them into a "new gamers" circle, send a message out to that introducing yourself and then move them into whatever sorting system you have. #circleshare  2012-11-30 19:05:484591304

Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307
Alex Diaz (alexdiazeco)2,406Do you have a green circleSo many of you have joined since the last time I shared this circle that I think it's about time to reshare it. If you don't have a green circle of your own, feel free to adopt this one and keep adding people of like mind to it. If you think you should be in it, please let us know so we can all add you.Unfortunately, G+ doesn't let us share more than 500 at a time, and this circle is considerably bigger, so many of you were left out, and there's no way to know who it was without going one by one, which I lack the time to do right now.Still, the share serves a high purpose, so here it is.2012-04-07 18:57:54500030

Alex Diaz (alexdiazeco)891Here's my green circle. I share it so you can add yourself to it if you're so inclined and share it on to your circles. The goal is for it to snowball into the biggest or one of the biggest sustainability circles on G+, with the bigger goal of spreading the message far and wide. Let's make sure everyone gets in, the big names and the anonymous ones. It's starting out with many of both. So let's do it.2012-01-04 03:41:1233924910

Hangout question!

I'm in a hangout with three other people. I'm trying to add one more person, but each time I try, I get a red error in the chat window that says, "[This Person] could not be added to the Hangout."

Anyone know why this happens? It's the first time I've seen it.

Edit: SOLVED

My gaming group and I are working on a custom setting: A population aboard a generation ship has just arrived at its destination and needs to explore the planets of their new solar system to find a home.

So I'm looking for ship maps. 0 hr (suggested by +James August Walls) has quite a few (the Invictus or Argos III are most likely), but nothing quite as large as I would like (although I'll settle for shrinking the population if I need to).

http://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/606/0-hr-art--technology/subcategory/1607_9905/Future-Armada

Do you know of a good source for large-scale ship maps? I'm thinking on the order of hundreds of thousands of residents.

Edit: Leaving this here for inspiration: http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/171/0/1/size_comparison___science_fiction_spaceships_by_dirkloechel-d6lfgdf.jpg

Is there a version of a UPS that just attaches to the circuit breaker in the house? Seems excessive to require one for every separate room where you'd maybe want to plug in something expensive, like a computer or a TV.

What did people do before Google?

I have a 120GB SSD boot drive. It's been low on space for awhile, so I started looking into uninstalling some things. Then I noticed that when I selected every file on the C: drive, it didn't add up to the total space being used.

Turns out, there's this thing called "shadow copies." I had 21 of them, and they were eating up ~55 GB of space.

All better now! And I can stop thinking about a $200 investment in a new (bigger) boot drive. Hooray!

Welcome to Youtube, +James August Walls!

Without combing through the other comments to see what others have said, here are my recommendations:

1. Move the camera closer, so that the top of your notebook is about the bottom of the screen.

2. Go with a two-mic setup, so that you can adjust the volume of speech when necessary.

3. Pick up an HD web cam. I love my Logitech c920, but you'd probably be fine with a c720.

4. Focus more narrowly on what you're going to discuss in any given episode. This will shorten your duration and allow you to create more episodes for the same number of topics. A podcast can afford to drift a bit, because someone can listen to audio while doing anything else, but a video means you're monopolizing the user's screen, and you want that to be as little an inconvenience for the viewer as possible.

After wrapping up, I think this is my order of preference for the game systems.

1. Cypher/Savage Worlds: Both of these played well, and I have a hard time picking between them.
3. AGE with the escalation die.
4. AGE without the escalation die.
5. DCC.
6. BFRPG.

Had I ever had the opportunity to use any of DCC's stunt mechanics, maybe it would have shaken out differently. As it was, because of my dice rolls, DCC felt like BFRPG with more hit points, and BFRPG felt like any other RPG with all the interesting bit stripped out.

AGE's biggest benefit is also its biggest drawback. I love the bell curve provided by rolling multiple dice. However, having to add all of the dice together, along with any other modifiers (stat value, focus, situational modifiers [did I put my guard up last turn? Was it one or two points? However, having to add all of the dice together, along with any other modifiers (stat value, focus, situational modifiers [did I put my guard up last turn? Was it one or two points? Wait, I used the Defense stunt, so my AC is higher! Oh, that guy didn't make his save, so my spell does bonus damage based on my dragon die......... what was that number again?]), bogged things down. I'm not sure what I would do to alter it, since the stunt mechanic is tied directly into the three-die system. Maybe scale things down to a 1-10 difficulty (like the Cypher System), roll 3d6 and take the middle result, and add task modifiers from there.

I'll say that I enjoy Savage Worlds much, much more as a player than I did as a GM, back when I ran Solomon Kane. I'm still not entirely sold on exploding dice, but I do like the Wild Die mechanic. I wonder if, instead of exploding dice, you could substitute a three-die mechanic: skill die, associated stat die, and Wild Die, so a melee attack would be Fighting, Agility, and Wild Die, pick the highest. And maybe if one of those comes up the highest value, you add the next highest die value to the roll.

I'm not sure what to say about Cypher System. I loved it, but I expected to. Looks For Trouble was a great fit for my character, and it worked just fine despite not being a Numenera focus. Being able to expend Effort to affect dice rolls that mattered to me, along with having a reroll mechanic, felt like it empowered me as a player to be able to affect the story more than adding a static bonus to a roll did.___

Currently, political candidates can receive donations from anybody--even people outside of their districts. When this happens, a politician's loyalties are split between their donors and their constituents. I would like to see a prohibition on political candidates receiving donations from outside their districts.

GrandLan is right downtown, but unfortunately, it's not an option; that weekend is a Magic: the Gathering prerelease event, so there won't be room for us non-Magicians on the main floor. I'm told we could use the upstairs room, but it only has one table that can sit about 12 people.

White Cap Comics is 6 miles (11 minutes) from downtown Grand Rapids. It's closer to the house I'll be renting than Out of the Box (about 3 minutes away instead of 15). The aforementioned M:tG prerelease may mess with their table availability, but I am told that they can set something up in some discreet corner, away from the ravaging talons of the Magic players.

Hours

Friday: Noon-8 p.m.
Saturday: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

Note: I'd put this poll in the event, but apparently, that is verboten.___

RESOLVED

Hi there!

I have a super-new-guy question. I'm looking through the newly released 7th Edition Rulebook, and on pages 57+, skill headers have a percentage next to them (for example, Accounting (05%)). Why? Can someone point me to a page number that explains that?

Thanks!

Edit: I see there is an example on page 78 which suggests those percentages are the starting values for the respective skills. Is there a rule that specifies that?

Edit edit: Ah, there it is. Page 36, last sentence of the first paragraph. While I tried searching for "base value," it is described here as "base chance" and "base number."

Thanks to Anibal Delgado over on the 7E Kickstarter's comments section for pointing me to it.
