Ғ ΜіснæL Sŧuŧz4,508I rarely do this...In fact, I haven't done a circle share in over a year, and I've never shared this one. But... It's #AmbienTime , and the thing about the folks in this circle: they've all paid their dues with respect to my #AmbienTime  moments. These are the people who, with one or two exceptions, have known me the longest here on G+. They also happen to be the list of people who are either overly medicated, or underly medicated, because they still haven't uncircled me yet, even after all this time. I keep checking, but so far none of these people has gotten tired of my crap enough to go through the effort yet. I don't have the heart to tell them that this suffering won't erase all their past misdeeds and sins, and won't get them into heaven.I spend 99% of my G+ time in this one circle. And one of the people here was insane enough to actually marry me.It's a very diverse group, about as diverse as you can get. Each, though, is wonderfully broken, like magnificent shattered stained-glass murals, each reflects the same sun that alights upon us all, but in uniquely amazing ways that, with the passage of the hours and the seasons, brings a new dazzling display every time I see them online. If these are the only people you ever circle on G+, you will be hooked on G+ for life. And it's proof-positive that quality kicks the crap out of quantity every day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Thank you" to all of you guys for putting up with me for the last few years. And I take serious pride in knowing that I have the rockin'est circle on G+.+Sque Morgan , up there at the 1:00 spot was my very first friend here. We don't talk much these days, I miss that, but we've both been going through some crap these last few months. I think she's responsible for my meeting about half this circle, people like +Eric Johnson, for example. And I know that after Sque (like a few days) came +Karen Schumacher  and +Debra Dayton , and then +Alvin Stearns and then +Shawn Holster, who I was sure was going to defrock me last month when he announced his annual spring circle cleaning...+Darryl Mouzone I met through an experiment. I decided to add every "suggestion" that G+ made for one week, and he was the only one that made in to this circle, which made the whole exercise a totally worth-while thing to do.2014-09-23 03:17:43431706

Dubie Bacino103,464ENGAGERS CIRCLE - Curated by +Dubie Bacino (11th Edition)This is a circle of truly amazing and creative individuals. Most people are the ones I've been interacting with for years here and on other social networks, mixed in with some new friends I've made recently. All people here are very active on Google+ and worth adding to your circles. They come from different countries and backgrounds, some of them are bloggers and social media professionals, others are artists, musicians, writers, photographers… They are not a shy group by any means. All you have to do is reach out and most of them will reciprocate the engagement. When it comes to #CircleSharing, my practice is to share only two of my circles every month: - ENGAGERS: this is a way of saying thank you to those who have interacted with me in some way (either by plussing, commenting, and/or sharing my posts, or by participating in my communities), and- INSPIRING: mainly photographers, but also other people who I find post original and interesting content. To get into my circles is real simple: either engage with my posts, or keep sharing quality content. Google will never harm consumers [unless they are Windows phone users?]
Google says it would never harm an end-user over a conflict with a competitor. In an interview Eric Schmidt is asked if he can imagine Google doing something similar to Amazon:  refusing to sell books of publisher Hachette over a commercial conflict.

Would Google ever do that something like that?

[Schmidt] Well, let’s ask the question: Has Google ever done that? Has Google ever done that—in a market, exclude one competitor from an end user service? I think the answer is no.

If it came up in a meeting, would this be one of those things that someone would immediately say. “This is evil?”

[Schmidt] Somebody would say why are we penalizing that group over this business issue? That would be how the debate would occur.

Interesting but why then isGoogle blo... more »

See what happens when kids grow up in a world of racial stereotypes
The video shows a repeat of an old experiment where children can chose between two dolls. See these black children demonstrate a complete lack of self-esteem or even outright self-hatred by choosing a white doll (the 'nice one') over a black one while they are perfectly aware of their own skin color.

If all you hear and see are images where a black skin is linked with violence, crime and poverty, it's no wonder young kids already disassociate themselves of their own color.

The original 1940s experiment by Kenneth and Mamie Clark led to the famous High Court decision to forbid racial school segregation. This small scale repetition of the experiment shows we still have a long way to go.

The relevance for my own country of birth, the Netherlands, is that the national debateabo... more »

App privacy controls still missing from Android 5 / Lollipop
There is a lot of money to be made by selling our privacy so the business model of app developers often relies on harvesting your private data. Enter the world of app privacy controls....

We have all been there: installing a simple app (say a flashlight) which demands access to all our location, contacts and photos, wants to use the microphone and camera and insists on using the internet for itself while sending texts on our costs.

The even more sneaky apps install with a normal list of permissions, but on the first update extend this enormously.

Most users just say accept without even scrolling down the list, but some of us would like to control what an app can do on our phone. Happy to let the flashlight app control the camera flash, but why give it access to our contacts or location to... more »

Social network Tsu not a pyramid (MLM) scheme, but organic at heart
Most of us balked when we heard that Tsu ( an new social network if you don't know  it, use www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen as an invite, but please read on) not only pays for content (which is great) but does so depending on your position in the hierarchy of the network. We all  (at least the decent content providers over here) shiver thinking that we could be part of some multi level marketing scheme as we know that the bottom part of the pyramid will always lose out.

Let's see how it really works. Tsu says it will share it's ad revenues over all users according to their part in the generated views. So far so good. If Facebook would do this with about about 65% active users out of a total of 1.3 billion the net result would be (ball park figure) $10 per facebook user.

Now Tsu can't live from nothing so it says it will take 10% of total ad revenue and distribute the rest over its users. Following the facebook example every fb active user would still get $9 per year and FB would have 1 billion revenue. Everybody happy....

The reality and something Tsu acknowledges is that ad revenues depend on page views. In other words popular posters create more views and hence more eyes on the ads surrounding these posts.

Let's assume an extremely conservative 1:100 scenario for posts versus views on FB instead of the naive 1:1. It would up the ad revenue per poster to $900.

If the actual ratio is more like 1:100.000 it would mean successful posters would actually earn $90.000. Everyone who ever looked at the G+ figures as collected on +CircleCount will know that the distribution is even more skewed than that so posters with some traction would earn even more.

The MLM / Pyramid scheme in action
Tsu states that you only get 50% after distracting their fee of 10%. So to put it into perspective the $100 are now reduced to $45 (half of the $100 minus the 10% fee).

So far so good. Effectively 45% of all ad generated income is more than you get elsewhere. The quality of the deal doesn't depend on that percentage, but on the upstream income. Your content is instrumental to the number of ad views so determine your income. You only get 45% but where do you get a better deal?

But what happens to the other $45/.50%?
It gets distributed by a typical multi level marketing system. From your half of the hypothetical $90 the other half is distributed over something called the family tree, but it's nothing else than a MLM scheme.

If you signed up through http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen the other $45 will be split over his channel. Do note that even if you use another account, that 50% of the user split is always going somewhere. If you use a different account to sign up: he or she will get that share.

What happens to the other $45 in this example? It get's split up over the lineage of people you signed up with up. The so called family tree.

Let's quote the FAQ:
Tsū’s algorithm automatically tracks, measures, and distributes revenue to the appropriate user and their family tree.

At a high level, 90% of revenues are distributed to users. To maintain the platform, tsū receives 10%. To see how this breaks down, let’s take a look at 4 users, all with varying start dates on tsū.

User A invites user B, who invites user C, who invites user D

Part 1
- $100 of earned revenue is generated based on the content user D shared (photos, videos, status updates, etc.)

Part 2
- 90% of earned revenue go to the users. In this case, $90 of the $100 is shared with all the users.
- tsū takes 10% of the $100 for platform fees. In this case $10.

Part 3
- User D, the original content creator takes 50% of the $90. In this case, $45.
- User C gets 33.3% (1/3) of the original $90 generated. In this case, $29.70
- User B gets 11.1% (1/3 of 1/3 = 1/9) of the original $90 generated. In this case $9.99
- User A gets 3.70% (1/3 of 1/3 of 1/3 = 1/27) of the original $90 generated. In this case $3.33
- This is what we call the rule of infinite thirds _

I would say it's a rule of bad math or missing calculators as no way 1/3 of $90 will ever be 29.70. The math is wrong as they forget to use the elegant rule of using infinite 1/3's and substituted it with a stupide 0.33.

I hope to get more answers on the financial distribution tomorrow after interviewing the founders.

However it doesn't change the equation: most of the money goes to the content sharer (45% of total ad revenue) and the rest disappears in the 'upstream' channel of people you started following on Tsu.

So it's a MLM? Enriching the rich?
No, it's not as it's not a closed economy. Take your average Wellness or whatever MLM scam. The system is such that the highest levels profit from failed sales to end-users. In other words everyone except for the sucker at the bottom profits while he ends up with a garage full of wellness products.

Huh?, if it talks like an MLM, why wouldn't it be one?
Because of economy. There is no lowest level in Tsu as the real money comes from outside of the system. Ads. Not paid by you. The cake is growing without you eating it. I really appreciate +Mark Traphagen's article and completely understands his concerns, but in Tsu's case you can eat the cake and have it too.

Good questions you didn't even think about
If I f.i http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen sign up using another account am I not losing potential revenue? Is it not better to be at the top of the pyramid?

Not really: the income distribution is so that you don't lose a penny wherever in the pyramid you enter. The person 'above' you has a slight profit if you're successful but not at your expense. You will always get your 45% net of the ad income.

It does help however to use invitations from people who are capable of promoting your content. They do have a vested interest as they earn something independent of the success of your content.

If you're looking for a strategy I suggest picking people who are willing and capable to promote your_ content. Not people who are famous as they don't win more than pennies from your activities, nor people who offer you a log-in code without a real interest in promoting quality content.

It's a sound model and beneficial to content providers as well as consumers. The cake is not a limited one so it's certainly not a MLM model. We should all be capable of profiting from it but scale is crucial

Use www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen to sign up and grow the cake ;)___

Networks need scale and they need it fast. Look at the one successful newcomer G +, which with all the backing of Google, after three years still struggles in getting your friends and family on board. A new social network like Ello will never reach the needed critical mass and will implode whatever the great intentions driving it.

However, there is a new kid on the block and it's capable of disrupting the social network sphere. Not with an appeal on your social values or a guarantee to stay clear of big business, but with a promise to fill your pockets.

Tsu (apparently pronounced Sue...) starts with a new paradigm. It's a platform for your content, posts/videos/photos stays yours (so no copyright transfers  / hand over all your rights as usual) and it's monetized by you.

Now that's quite a revolutionary change. Try find another platform where you keep owning the content after you share it. Ah wait, your personal blog of course! Except that although the content stays yours, monetization is quite hard. Running successful adword campaigns on personal blogs is not that easy.

Tsu offers to take care of the ads in exchange for 10% of the revenue instead of your soul a lousy adword deal on a rarely visited blog.  An interesting offer for quality content providers or not?

Well for most of us it means we would earn pennies a year so money is still not a compelling argument. If you care about your content you want foremost the best environment to present it and a network like G+ is hard to beat.

Great visuals, large and really interested audience, searchable and findable by Google search. What more could you want?

As an active content producer myself I would say there are things missing on facebook and G+. Just ignoring that neither of us is paid to post, what's missing are things like 'analytics'. How many eyeballs are seeing our posts? We don't know, we don't get the tools and only by very indirect tools like including an image in every post we get an impression if our post is read at all.

Sure since spring 2014 Google shows 'views' but it's not willing to tell us what it means. Seen in the stream, longer than 0.1 second, part of a WordPress default install or really clicked upon and seen by real people. Most of us got a bump of 100.000's or even tens of millions of views mid September. A week later they were gone.

We don't know. We are not allowed to know. All requests to clarify at least the September bump went unheard. Google is deaf for the one thing we content providers want most: feedback.

We stumble in the dark. We post and thanks to sites like +CircleCount we  have a vague idea how many plusses (likes), shares and 'views' we got over time, but content producing on G+ is mostly feeding a black box. We can't expect Google to pay content providers for G+ content as long as they don't show ads on the network. Fair enough.

But why are we left in the dark in terms of engagement? If you run a Google owned blogger platform you get statistics and monetization options. If you run a YouTube channel you get detailed stats and a decent chance to make money out of it if you're successful so why is the social network G+ excluded from it?

I for one am happy to see a social network which solves this. I don't mind if I get 0.0001 cent per view or a quarter per comment although I would prefer the latter :), but I do appreciate that Tsu gives you real feedback.  The availability of real analytics is in itself a reason to start posting there.

We all have an ego and want to see a reward for our content. Most of us are much more motivated by feedback than by upfront money, but a network which offers both is truly disruptive and deserves to grow

part two will delve deeper into Tsu and the apparently Multi Level Marketing  model underlying it. My first impression: it's actually generating worth so no MLM, but they could take a lesson in basic math...

If you need an invite to the network use http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen if you care for a network which shares quality content as that will be the key to the future of Tsu and something I will promote wherever I can. Otherwise we will just end up with a new Buzzfeed, but that's for a  second post...

Coming soon including info on the actual revenue models. Want a notification of the follow up post, plus the post.

If disaster struck and mankind had to start again, would we do it faster?
As a thought experiment to see how important inventions and knowledge actually are: imagine a world where we lost all tools and had to restart again, but this time with the knowledge we now have. How fast would we be back at the technological level of today?

Assume an earth-scale disaster leaving only modern day people (so we dismiss possible evolution in intelligence), an environment similar to earth, say 10.000 years BC so that we are certified free of the last ice age,  and -remarkable - a copy of Wikipedia (or sufficient people to represent this knowledge).

Would we be capable to progress much faster the next time round? Or would we be bound again by the painfully slow process of gathering sufficient food to even start working on technological progress?

Let's take an example: we learned a lot about food over fifty millenia, but it wouldn't really help us hunting. We probably lost more skills there than we won and Wikipedia surely won't help us catch a bear. However there are more ways to make a sustainable living and farming is well understood now.

In this assumed second-coming we don't need to wait until Mendel was done crossing peas and learning about genetics. We know it works, we know what to look for and we could be breeding cattle within a generation. Or can't we because our cows would be eaten by wolves and bears and we can't get rid of them as we don't have guns or even proper fences?

Well we now know how to make steel so why don't we skip that whole stone age? Guns might be a bit difficult but iron would be good enough for decent fences to keep the foxes out.

The recipe is easy enough: smelt iron ore (we would know where to find it tnx to Wiki) in a hot oven with enough carbon and out comes so called pig iron. All you need is a way to get the fire hot enough and those stone-agers already knew to light a fire.

Admittedly it needs to be hotter than your average campfire but unlike our predecessors we know this so we could make a clay oven right away, pump oxygen into the fire with improvised bellows (we have cow skin remember) and process the brittle pig iron into usable steel.

Or couldn't we? As we need hammers to change the unusable iron into something resembling steel and we skipped the stone age remember. Oh and steel is a hopeless material for a technological backward society ('us' in this thought experiment) as it's actually to hard to work with without tools we can't produce without ... steel.

To make complex forms and even think about machinery you need to cast iron or bronze as our ancestors did as a first step. They used bronze because it melted at a lower temperature, was soft enough to model when it was cold and was harder than your basic pure iron.

However these complex forms could only be sculpted thanks to experienced artisans who had learned their trade over generations working wood and clay. If you can't create a mold with a high precision even a simple engine is out of reach.

This all started after seeing a video of someone casting his own engine block in his backyard. That led to interest in the history of steel production which like most 'ancient' technologies popped up all over the globe with sometimes thousands of years apart between regions. Before I knew I was pondering on the question how important knowledge and inventions actually are.

Do you think we could  re-invent ourselves much faster thanks to all the ideas, inventions and experience mankind accumulated or are we like children who have to go through all the phases?

The original 1940s experiment by Kenneth and Mamie Clark led to the famous High Court decision to forbid racial school segregation. This small scale repetition of the experiment shows we still have a long way to go.

The relevance for my own country of birth, the Netherlands, is that the national debate about 'Zwarte Piet', a blackface helper to the December celebration of 'Sinterklaas' is really important for black all children.

Black Pete is mostly played by white people, using black makeup, over the top afro wigs, golden earrings and large red lips. They act 'funny' by pretending to be stupid, while jumping around in an energetic way.

They act as the little helpers to the wise, white, bearded Saint Nicolas who arrives on his even more white high horse...

The contrast can't be bigger and the stereotyping can hardly be more over the top. Complaints by the relatively small black community in the Netherlands are mostly put aside as 'it's all good fun and don't spoil the party for the children'.

Maybe watching this little experiment helps realize defenders of this tradition realize that stereotyping does make children suffer.

Racism goes much deeper than skin; it really is a brain disease

TGIF For Nerds: going through today's Android 5 / Lollipop release
This Friday developers finally got their hands on the final software development kit (SDK) for Android 5.0 as well as the latest preview software for Nexus phones.

End users will have to wait a few more weeks (or months depending on their phone brand) to see what Android 5 is all about, but the video below already gives a good first impression of the new features.

The new notification system will interest most users. The biggest change out of the box is that notifications are now visible without unlocking your phone. Even more, you can immediately act on them by answering an email or sharing a print screen.

It does save from you from constantly entering patterns or codes, but it's also a huge inroad on your privacy if you leave the phone unattended on the table for just a few minutes.... more »

It does save from you from constantly entering patterns or codes, but it's also a huge inroad on your privacy if you leave the phone unattended on the table for just a few minutes. Sex texting will never be the same once your co-workers join in the fun.....

From the looks of it, the new 'Material Design' is more expressive, richer and it offers a lot of little animations helping in getting feedback from the interface.

The color scheme and contrasts are hugely improved over the earlier Android L preview and there is a welcome choice between a light and a darker look as well as options to go back to the older Holo theme.

It looks much better and more mature than the candy look of iOS8.

Missing are new and updated apps. Google will probably use its Play Store to get these ready for prime time. That's the huge advantage of the new model introduced after the KitKat release.

Have a look yourself. What do you think?

P.S. I have watched several videos so my opinion is not just based on these 7 minutes by fellow Gplusser +Tim Schofield

What are Europe's best places to photograph in fall and winter?

Where are the best photo opportunities in Europe to catch our beautiful fall and winter season?

I'm thinking of heading to Europe at the end of October and staying through January. Can anyone recommend the best places to photograph during these months (i.e. spectacular fall color displays (or am I too late)). Have I missed the best time for Croatia's fall colors, for example? Or how about the most likely places to capture some nice snowfall? I'm flexible and will go just about anywhere from Iceland to Russia. +Max Huijgen I figured your network might have some suggestions :)___What are Europe's best places to photograph in fall and winter?

Good to see Apple  valuing intelligence for a change ;)
As of today you get a $100 discount in the Apple store if you can remember a four digit pin code!

The newly announced iPad mini 3 is apparently identical to the old mini except for a fingerprint scanner.  If your memory is good enough to store the 4 digits of a passcode, you can do without it and you save $100.

Or in an interesting twist: if you have a working memory, you get 16 GB extra digital memory and still pocket $50 when you buy the Mini 2 instead of todays new model.

Is the iPad Mini 2 suddenly the smartest tablet deal in town?

The video below and all others I tried on G+ won't play. Youtube still works.
If the below doesn't play for you check http://vimeo.com/59777392 so see that it's indeed a valid video.

UPDATE: there is a consistent pattern of mobile users having no problem while desktop users all seem to suffer from the same 'white screen' the moment they press Play.

The even more sneaky apps install with a normal list of permissions, but on the first update extend this enormously.

Most users just say accept without even scrolling down the list, but some of us would like to control what an app can do on our phone. Happy to let the flashlight app control the camera flash, but why give it access to our contacts or location to resell these data to an unknown third party.

For a short period Android (4.2.2) offered exactly this possibility to control the permissions of apps. You could allow or deny individual permissions. If you went too far, the app stopped working, but in most cases you got the functionality you wanted without the intrusion on your privacy.

App Ops was brilliant and applauded by privacy organization EFF, but rapidly removed by Google. This control by users was not 'ready for prime-time' so there was hope it would return in Android 5.

Unfortunately it's missing from today's announcements. What we got in terms of privacy is default encryption (nice if you lose your phone) and so called SELinux which will help against malware and controls access on a system level but it's not user controlled.

However Android 5 / Lollipop won't protect you against the software you install yourself. Lots of apps are basically malware as they only exist to spy on you and sell your privacy, but you were the one who accepted the long list of 'permissions' so officially it was your choice to sell out.

Android 5 offers us a security lollipop while we need actual user control over apps. Disappointing that Google didn't dare to break the business model of sneaky apps

What would be your choice: fine control with the slight risk that the installed app won't work as expected or the current black and white model of 'accept all' versus 'don't install'?

Would Google ever do that something like that?

[Schmidt] Well, let’s ask the question: Has Google ever done that? Has Google ever done that—in a market, exclude one competitor from an end user service? I think the answer is no.

If it came up in a meeting, would this be one of those things that someone would immediately say. “This is evil?”

Interesting but why then is Google blocking the YouTube app for Windows Phone? It's a long story, but the summary is that even after Microsoft and Google worked together on a new YouTube app, it still got blocked by Google.

All requests by the superb Windows phone app (according to end-users) to load a YT movie were denied over a conflict where technical and legal arguments were used as distractions from a commercial clash between rival phone operating systems.

The end result: millions of Windows phone users without an official client for YouTube. Never harm end-users over a commercial conflict? Don't do evil?

Some serious issues with G+ as a tool for brands are addressed as well as the more fundamental lack of traction G+ suffers from.

To me, Google saying in a long interview about Google+ that everything is just fine falls apart when it says it doesn't want to talk about users. Why? Because Google itself used to make a big deal of talking about them a lot to prove that it was growing. Radio silence on that issue makes it sound like something has gone south.___An interesting debate on the future of Google Plus

If skin is sacrosanct why then is foreskin excluded?
Under most Western laws children can't legally have a tattoo whatever their parents decide but little boys are commonly (33%) circumcised.

If we want to protect children from irreversible damage by the ideas of their parents we should of course just ban religion ;)

Mental damage aside: shouldn't we stop all physical mutilations of children no matter what the underlying idea? Wikipedia reveals that lots of countries (and US states) forbid placing tattoos on minors no matter what their parents think. However these same laws usually allow irreversible male circumcisions.

Why don't we stop genital mutilations regardless of gender and whatever the underlying belief system? Nowadays you can laser a tattoo away, but no word about 3D-printing a missing foreskin.

Curiosity leads to science so let your children experiment
+Sophie Wrobel has been introducing science to her own children and now delivers a book full of experiments for 3 - 5 year olds.

A perfect present for parents with young children.

Introducing my new book containing a year's worth of kid's experiments!
Available in English and German

I'm proud to announce that I've now published my first book - a book filled with illustrated experiments for preschoolers, one experiment for each week of the year. For the past two years, I've been doing weekly experiments with my kids, and compiled their favorite experiments into this book.

The book is divided into 12 chapters, each of which focuses on a particular theme and lasts for a month. The experiments are designed to inspire the kids to start asking questions, try out the impossible, and most of all have fun exploring natural phenomena! Some of the all-time favorites for inspiration:

- Homemade ice cream to explore how salt affects the melting point of water
- Racing toys to explore friction
- Homemade microscope to see what a cell is

The book is available in English and German on amazon.de or directly from the publisher:

Google served malware to millions: are ads really the future of internet?
Sites like Last.fm, The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post who use Google's ad netwok Doubleclick apparently served malware since late August. It's certainly not the first time that an ad network serves malicious code, but it's one of the most high profile occurences.

Worse, the ads were served by Google whose $60 billion business is completely dependent on ad income.

The impact of the malicious code is unclear, but even if estimates of 'just' 5% effectively compromised user systems are correct, these numbers are still way too high.

The risk of allowing ads on your system is basically too high to be acceptable if you care for a stable computer without infections, privacy leaks or other compromises. Ad blockers can and will stop this and are a better first point of defense than virusscanners. So can we still afford to surf the net without an ad blocker?

And the $60 billion Google question: is an internet with automatically served ads viable if people start to defend their systems with ad blockers?

It's not only Google which will hurt from millions of people installing ad blockers, the web pages running these ads lose their business model.

How can the 201x web progress if ads are more dangerous than the downloads of the last decade were. Will we need a new business model?

30 million dollar and a new identity if you can tell who downed flight MH17
A German detective agency offers this extremely high reward on behalf of a mystery client to a whistleblower who can reveal who was behind the downing over the Ukraine of flight MH17. The money is already deposited on a Swiss bank so it's no hoax.

The owner of the detective agency says he doesn't know the identity of the client, but the offer of a new identity suggests it's a state actor or an extremely influential group.

To be rewarded you need to answer the following questions:
– Who shot down MH17 on July 17?
– Who gave the order?
– Who covers up the shoot down? (Also, if it was by accident and not out of political, economic or military motivation)
– Who can provide details on the circumstances that led to the shoot down?

– Who was directly involved with the shoot down?
– What happened to the people that were involved with the shoot down? What happened to the weapon used?
- Who can name the people that cleared the shoot down?

So far the investigation in the shooting of MH17 progresses extremely slowly. The Dutch and Malaysian government will be interested in these questions, but it's very unlikely that they would interfere with the official Dutch led investigation.

My money is on Russia: if they are innocent as they claim, offering 30 million and a new identity is peanuts compared to the damages in international reputation and economic boycotts.

Head-up display lets you use your phone while focussing on the road
Interesting $300 pre-order smart device which shows you navigation, incoming messages, tweets, whatever projected in front of you.

You can deal with incoming stuff by using voice commands or gestures. The projection appears to be 6 feet in front of you so you don't need to refocus on traffic.

Safest solution out there and certainly very nifty, but you're still distracted if you start tweeting while driving

People always forget about the infra-structure ...
But the good thing about mankind is that we dream.

We think and without even inventing it, a light bulb shows up over our head :) If we all thought inside of the box, this guy would have invented razor blades or another method of much needed epilation to get his genes multiplied.

However he hacked away at a piece of stone to create his own future and invented the cables connecting him to the future.

Did it impress a girl or are his genes lost in search of an infra-structure? Chicken or egg, hacker or stillborn hairy idealist?

Universal keyboard (iOS, Android, Win) offers detachable stand
All laptops suffer from a huge ergonomic problem: the screen is attached to the keyboard. The consequence is that you have to look down at an uncomfortable angle to see what you're doing. The screen is too close and too low.

Microsoft just announced a flexible keyboard solution to use with a tablet of your choice. When you really have to work 'laptop' style, you can leave the stand (which doubles as the cover) and the keyboard attached and work in confined circumstances.

For all other occasions you detach both and put the screen at the angle and distance you want. Extra advantage is that the combination of a tablet and a keyboard is easier to upgrade and to replace in case of mishaps.

With bluetooth connecting to iOS, Android and Windows tablets (or even smartphones) it's a flexible solution for $80. You can even control all three of them simultaneously and switch between operating systems with a dedicated key.

Typing comfort hasn't been reviewed as yet: if it's as good as a decent laptop it might be a flexible solution to carry a tablet and this keyboard

Leonard Cohen still going strong at almost 80! New album released
He still can't sing and he is still as convincing as he ever was as a singer songwriter. Best songs are as always with a choir or backing vocal.

Popular Problems seems to be freely available as a promotion for one week. The link that worked for me is below, but Google is your friend if that one doesn't work.

The five pixels that shocked social media?
A week ago I shared an image which now disappeared thanks to censorship on G+. I assure you that there were only five pixels of a nipple which could be male or female....

The original, in hindsight ominous text was:
Could have 'shopped the nips a bit.. says one G+ commenter and on Facebook the photo has been censored according to +Trey Ratcliff

If there is a problem with this photo, it's not the nipples, these five pixels on your screen, but the overall impression of a naked girl with two dressed men. Imagine all people involved being naked: the image would have been much stronger and very different, but of course then it would have been censored from all social media.

  continues.

Acroyoga with a Splash

There's all kinds of yoga on the playa here.  Every day, in fact, there are probably about 20 official classes (of every possible sort).  And then, beyond that, many people practice yoga out in the open, here and there, whenever the mood strikes them.  Here's one of those particular moods!___The five pixels that shocked social media?

Format and setting and probably even the butcher are the same as in the preceding three beheadings. Including the worrying announcement of the next potential victim, also a Brit. The IS butcher says:

“This British man has to pay the price for your promise, Cameron, to arm the Peshmerga against the Islamic State. Ironically, he has spent a decade of his life serving under the same Royal Air Force that is responsible for delivering those arms. Your evil alliance with America which continues to strike the Muslims of Iraq and most recently bombed the Haditha Dam will only accelerate your destruction. And playing the role of the obedient lapdog, Cameron, will only drag you and your people into another bloody and unwinnable war.”___

Strange world, but apparently this 'water' is hugely popular within Google, Facebook and other tech companies. The other fun is that the whole interview is about that strange thing of 'selling real products'. Actual physical objects. Its not an app, it's not a service, it's a miracle apparently... Something you can hold and have to distribute.

Is 'physical goods' so alien to Silicon Valley (and did we lose the meaning of 'water' somewhere in the last decade?)

Apple promises that you will be able to pay by waving your iPhone in front of a pay terminal in some popular US shops. Amazing, so I spent the last 48 hours understanding this new technology, finding loopholes, hacking a bit or two and of course putting my solution to the test.

I wanted to find a way to use my existing Android phone to make a contactless payment and to make it even more challenging I had to do this in Europe...

It's done ladies and gentlemen. I proudly present the Android hack to Apple Pay. For now I'll call it iPayD after I Paid with a Droid

As most Android phones don't have a fingerprint reader that was the first thing we had to circumvent. Well, that wasn't too hard after all. Turned out to be unnecessary.

Next problem is that my trusty Android doesn't contain a unique Apple created credit card number equivalent. Or something like it as I couldn't find any store actually accepting Apple Pay here in Europe so this part is a bit vague.

Never mind, I resolutionary rethought the problem and learned everything I wanted to know from sites like the Verge. They explained that pulling a credit card from your wallet, swiping it and  returning it, was hard work and should be replaced by just waving your phone in front of the stunned cashier.

How to do this with just some simple Droid? The solution I came up with after lots of research could be privileged information under your local law, could well be covered by patent laws or DRM regulations so please memorize and destroy this text.

First thing, get your credit (or debit card) from your wallet. Relax, you'll only have to do this once. Now check if it's a NFC enabled card. Most are in Europe anno 2014, but if you have an older one, ask your bank to replace it.

Now, and this is the tricky part, put that card at the back of your phone case. Just slide it in at the back between the phone and the case and leave it there face up. This will be the new permanent setup and key to this hack.

Now step forward to the cashier 'phone drawn' and wave in front of the machine. Don't touch. This is high tech wizardry in the making. Just wave that hacked android. The cashier's machine will possibly bleep to welcome you. Don't be afraid, that's good news.

Now step forward,  sign the slip and off you go. You paid without ever having to draw your wallet and without the need for a new iPhone. Now how amazing is that?

(pssst if the amount is under 25E you don't even have to sign in most Euro countries. If you don't say 'iPaiD' to the cashier it will be a truly contactless payment :)

P.S. for the technically minded the hack involves NFC (complex tech, but rest assured available on most Androids), phone cases (slightly lower tech, some Android users don't have them, but iPhone people will always protect their phones with one. Can be obtained for $2) and the courage to say iPayD instead of Apple Pay.___

Did Google acquire an expert in polls for talent or for their our data?
Google just took over a small company specialized in online polls. One out of 449 internetters has used a voting poll created by Polar said the company blurb.

That's a lot of data on people if they actually stored them. One poll means nothing but the combined results could tell more about you than you ever wanted to tell the world, let alone a company.

Google's data mining capabilities and prior knowledge could be a gold mine for advertisers and a horror scenario for the privacy conscious.

Are all our opinions now being matched with everything Google already knows about us?

You Go First: Is Obama's Coalition actually going to bomb Syria?
We live in the age of consent; you can't just drop some bombs on a country because you suspect terrorists on their soil. Worse, you can't even attack a country without permission of the Security Council and you need a very strong case that it's just self defense, your honor.

Oh wait, you could, We did so in Afghanistan and repeated the trick in Iraq and now these are nice and peaceful countries where western democracy has settled and the people feel liberated now.

The coalition of the willing of that era has fallen apart and their governments have been criticized. Heck, it even cost Tony Blair his good standing. Poor guy now makes a living advising obscure Eastern dictators.

Speaking about Eastern. If Russia can't interfere in Ukraine surely we can't interfere in Syria. Or can we?

But surely this is for a good cause. Nobody wants an Islamic State so everybody will be happy if we 'destroy them'.

Well, it depends on who you ask. Not every government where IS is active, is looking forward to spontaneous bombings. Case in point Assad who struggles with a civil war, is still not happy with the idea of Western planes dropping bombs on his country. Call the guy nationalistic, but he will have this in common with most national leaders. He says he would like to be consulted at least...

Iran then, a country which doesn't share any warm religious feelings with the IS Sunnis and a close neighbor in the region; are they in favor of Western bombs? Nope, they are not. They find it slightly hypocrite that coalition members in the recent past supported "financially and military' the very same terrorists in Iraq and Syria which they are now expected to bomb.

Other countries then; surely some members of this coalition must be willing to destroy and destruct as Obama likes saying.

Nah, Germany and even Great Britain say just dropping bombs on a country without consent, is a bridge too far. That leaves us with Denmark, Poland an Austria, well know military air forces which will crumble the Islamic State....

Or the as yet unnamed list of Arab states. Like they will actively fight...

Yes, as Sunni states, they would like to see Syria which has a Shiite majority, fall. However as religious brothers of IS their support will be limited to words, a bit of money and maybe the use by the  Americans of their airports.

Saudi-Arabia and Qatar have on paper the means to support this 'coalition' but both have actively supported IS with weapons and money and share the Sunni belief, so they are hardly the reliable partners to build a coalition on.

Forging an international coalition is never easy, but this must be the most cripple one in recent history. Nobody will go first; the US seems to be walking this alone...

Options for the West:
- boots on the ground repeat of Afghanistan/Iraq. Chase IS in Syria and Iraq and defeat them.

Pro: It would deprive IS of their (sources of) wealth like oil, banks etc. and it would destroy their heavy weapons as well as disrupt their organization.
Contra: body bags will come back in disturbing high numbers so public opinion won't accept it. And defeat is possible, but destruction not. IS can survive a military defeat.

- air strikes on strategic targets and kill leaders / destabilize with drones.

Pro: public opinion loves the show of force. No body bags. Air strikes disrupt further progress by IS. Kurds and Iraqi army are helped with an air cover.

Contra: which strategic targets? it's not a regular army so hardly any centralized resources to go after. Enemy knows how drones work. Also they are less effective without intelligence on the ground and IS terror rule will stop special forces and local informants.

- do nothing, let the locals sort it out.

Pro: cheap, no major political risks, Iran and Turkey have sufficient motives to help southern Iraq beat IS.

Contra: public opinion wants 'something' for cruelty shown on television. No strategic gains to be made in the region, they could well decide to go it alone and ignore the West.___

Instagram for the win?

Hello to longtime +Google+ subject experts & enthusiasts! — I've been absent a good while, so I have a fresh perspective & questions on Google+ adoption:  Who does "What's Hot & Recommended" appeal to? Which demographic? (Read more for larger perspective)

This is also a hi to +Dave Besbris — we chatted a few times before you moved into your present G+ role. ... With some of these #Google+ experts +mentioned below, we've been having such discussions since year 1 of Google+ . I live in the heart of San Francisco, work in tech, hire people in their 20's. This, I'm sure, will sound hard to believe — it's nuts to me, but true: Over the past 3 years, of the 15 people I have hired (people move on, I've replaced) seriously not one of these college educated smart people used Google+ .

I'd sing its praises, point out, draw out its differentiations from other products — still — nope, they weren't interested.

All the while, I myself was active on Google+, interacting with all of you —and we're all swatting down the constant strawman in Tech Blog/ Tech Industry writing — Google+ not really used (I wont even use the GT word). So clearly the product is fantastic, but why is that so difficult to communicate to certain segments of people? ...

My nieces just got past high school and into college... They don't use it. They used facebook but not anymore, as everybody knows: it's tapered off since their parents dug in swapping nostalgia photos, recounting old times.

They don't read emails; and for sure won't reply to them... not just to Uncles — they'll tell you right out "I dont use email, except for school". Everything is phone text — or —

2 years ago they were using snapchat, and I thought, come on now, i know what that's for — and they swore to me, no, it's not just for sexting. And I found out actually it was used by lots of people in place of texting and sending any kind of photos because the #interface was so damn simple. Speaking as a UX guy, I was surprised and impressed by how simple. (They still use it from what they say to me)

I myself for past 6-9 months have been using #twitter almost exclusively for social media for news discovery, design topics, etc... and when used with a multicolumn, multi-stream app like tweetdeck, I have found it really fantastic. Except for the character count, which, for someone like me is really hard. I follow a lot of indie journalists and real-time news stories and I don't think anything beats it.

But I check with my nieces, and no, they never use twitter— not interested. And I saw the pattern shift on twitter this past year:  Lots of "headline" + hashtag + instagram photo & link; and during #Ferguson shooting protests, became the dominant photo & video rapid-publish method for VICE news and others. I "instantly" saw why:  Photo/video + much longer character count to comment, + interaction right there.

And yes, my nieces, now in fresh+soph college, use instagram a lot.

So that finally leads me to "What's Hot & Recommended":  If somebody decided "ok, sure why not, I'll try Google+, and they wanted to see what's actively being talked about on Google+, this is what they's come to:

https://plus.google.com/u/1/explore/_

Seriously, +Dave Besbris, +Yonatan Zunger — do you really think that's a useful algorithm? If so, whom does it serve? Which demographic is being helped by Google+'s recommendations here? Don't you think there's room for improvement — to grab someone's interest who's just come to Google+ for the first time?

Thanks for reading all! My apologies to whomever I left off this list.

How many of you are sure you don't violate cloud rules on content?
You can't store unlawful, harassing, threatening, harmful, tortious, defamatory, libelous, abusive, violent, obscene, vulgar, invasive of another’s privacy, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, or otherwise objectionable content says Apple's iCloud, but the list is as good as identical for Google, Microsoft or whatever cloud storage.

I'm afraid my content could well be considered unlawful as I have no idea which laws I have to abide by. American I guess? I don't know them that well so I probably violated them in the last 25 years by writing documents, emailing, making photos or storing software.

Libelous Guilty your honor, I have said things which could well be libelous under whatever book you throw at me.

Threatening? You bet. I have had my share of unashamed debtors who I had to threaten with court cases just to pay up for services rendered. You will find these documents in my your cloud.

obscene? Now that's not really my thing, but I might have uploaded a photo with a nipple showing. If you have a panel of prudent Americans out there scanning my photos I could again be guilty as charged.

Oh, and if you escape all of these you will probably be catched by otherwise objectionable content All my content over the years must have been 'otherwise objectionable' according to laws, regulations and morality I 'm not acquainted with.

If everything would have been stored in the cloud I'm certain that somewhere, sometime I would have violated the terms of service meaning that the content would have been deleted and my data lost.

Even if you don't store naked pictures of yourself or the celeb you're dating, you have a 100% chance of losing your content due to violation of any of these silly terms of services.

The good thing though is that the content which is most 'illegal' will probably 'leak' from the cloud all over the internet so you will have a backup of your naked selfies___

Police use of high tech tools is hidden from the public (and attorneys)
By using so called secondary investigation methods the police obfuscates the usage of high tech and illegal tools to spy on people.

Once you know that person X had phone call Y it's easy enough to find evidence through traditional means to make the initial discovery valid in a court case. Good share by +Andreas Schou

This is profoundly dangerous.

As the surveillance techniques available to the police change, we rely on court supervision to give us more (and more general) rules governing their use. This is the reason that, for instance, the police can't use infrared cameras to look through the walls of your house, or use laser microphones to listen: it doesn't matter that the vibrations or heat are technically exiting your house; you have a reasonable expectation that no one will look.

Since the turn of the millennium, there have been enormous advances in electronic surveillance. Information scraped by the NSA can be forwarded on to the FBI or DEA, and fake "repeater" towers can intercept enormous volumes of cellphone calls -- and considering the poor state of telecom encryption, most of that information is in plaintext or close to it. And what sort of oversight have we gotten?

Essentially none.

American law enforcement agencies have gone to tremendous lengths to scrape together second-source data to cover their electronic techniques, exposing essentially none of their advanced surveillance to courts. As a result, as the sophistication of surveillance increases, the law of surveillance remains fixed in the 1990s -- well before any of the truly terrifying surveillance techniques were developed.

If we intend to remain a liberal state -- and we should -- then this sort of dragnet surveillance must be exposed to oversight outside the executive branch. ___Police use of high tech tools is hidden from the public (and attorneys)
