Ғ ΜіснæL Sŧuŧz4,508I rarely do this...In fact, I haven't done a circle share in over a year, and I've never shared this one. But... It's #AmbienTime , and the thing about the folks in this circle: they've all paid their dues with respect to my #AmbienTime  moments. These are the people who, with one or two exceptions, have known me the longest here on G+. They also happen to be the list of people who are either overly medicated, or underly medicated, because they still haven't uncircled me yet, even after all this time. I keep checking, but so far none of these people has gotten tired of my crap enough to go through the effort yet. I don't have the heart to tell them that this suffering won't erase all their past misdeeds and sins, and won't get them into heaven.I spend 99% of my G+ time in this one circle. And one of the people here was insane enough to actually marry me.It's a very diverse group, about as diverse as you can get. Each, though, is wonderfully broken, like magnificent shattered stained-glass murals, each reflects the same sun that alights upon us all, but in uniquely amazing ways that, with the passage of the hours and the seasons, brings a new dazzling display every time I see them online. If these are the only people you ever circle on G+, you will be hooked on G+ for life. And it's proof-positive that quality kicks the crap out of quantity every day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Thank you" to all of you guys for putting up with me for the last few years. And I take serious pride in knowing that I have the rockin'est circle on G+.+Sque Morgan , up there at the 1:00 spot was my very first friend here. We don't talk much these days, I miss that, but we've both been going through some crap these last few months. I think she's responsible for my meeting about half this circle, people like +Eric Johnson, for example. And I know that after Sque (like a few days) came +Karen Schumacher  and +Debra Dayton , and then +Alvin Stearns and then +Shawn Holster, who I was sure was going to defrock me last month when he announced his annual spring circle cleaning...+Darryl Mouzone I met through an experiment. I decided to add every "suggestion" that G+ made for one week, and he was the only one that made in to this circle, which made the whole exercise a totally worth-while thing to do.2014-09-23 03:17:43431706

Dubie Bacino103,464ENGAGERS CIRCLE - Curated by +Dubie Bacino (11th Edition)This is a circle of truly amazing and creative individuals. Most people are the ones I've been interacting with for years here and on other social networks, mixed in with some new friends I've made recently. All people here are very active on Google+ and worth adding to your circles. They come from different countries and backgrounds, some of them are bloggers and social media professionals, others are artists, musicians, writers, photographers… They are not a shy group by any means. All you have to do is reach out and most of them will reciprocate the engagement. When it comes to #CircleSharing, my practice is to share only two of my circles every month: - ENGAGERS: this is a way of saying thank you to those who have interacted with me in some way (either by plussing, commenting, and/or sharing my posts, or by participating in my communities), and- INSPIRING: mainly photographers, but also other people who I find post original and interesting content. To get into my circles is real simple: either engage with my posts, or keep sharing quality content. Londoners confronted with Dutch black face tradition
Interesting experiment to walk around in a park dressed up as Black Pete / Zwarte Piet, the helper of 'Sinterklaas' who in December goes around handing out presents to children.

Eighty percent of the Dutch population fails to understand that people are hurt by this stereotype. A vocal  minority defend it so aggressively that proponents of a change are bombarded with death wishes...

The discussion in the Netherlands is so heated that during the traditional parade of Sinterklaas some of the Black petes will actually be armed policemen; painted black of course.

Does this look like a proper children festivity or should  it be transformed into a more inclusive, race neutral event?

Signing away your rights to the devil FB, Google, Ello or Tsu?
New social network Tsu made people wonder what would happen if you create original content, - texts, photos, videos, whatever - and share it on Tsu. Are you handing over all your rights?

Afraid of the wall of text? Scroll down to the tl;dr version and conclusions.

The fine print in the terms and conditions seemed to contradict the simple statement in the Tsu FAQ ‘The entire point of tsū is that the content you publish is yours’.How bad is it and how does Tsu compare to other social media? The rules and regulations differ depending on the kind of creative content you produce.

Photography is not only one of the older crafts, it’s also a reasonably well-organized business with established rights and licenses so let’s assume we share a photo on a social networkand see w... more »

Apple Mini now available with Android 5.0
Nokia is very proud of it's N1 tablet design "Side by side we are better than the iPad mini. We beat them, on every single feature . . . It's really a product you would expect out of Nokia. It is the thinnest device we have ever designed."

But the reality is that it looks very similar to the iPad Mini and it will be built, marketed and sold by Foxconn; the Chinese giant who knows very well how to built Apple products to a high standard.

The design by Nokia isn't the most interesting aspect of this 7.9" Android tablet. That Foxconn will market and sell it itself is. The OEM licenses the name Nokia but is supposed to handle all the rest. A move similar to Acer in the past: slowly getting away from building other people's products.

The Euro parliament voted today to break up Google
will be the headline in the American press. The reality is that it was a short paragraph in a long document on consumer rights in a digital market.

The Euro parliament voted today to break up Google
will be the headline in the American press. The reality is that it was a short paragraph in a long document on consumer rights in a digital market.

However it's true that a large majority of the parliament just requested the European Commission 'to consider proposals aimed at unbundling search engines from other commercial services'

It's defined as a long term way of 'achieving to enforce EU competition rules decisively, based on input from all relevant stakeholders and taking into account the entire structure of the digital single market in order to ensure remedies that truly benefit consumers, internet users and online businesses'

The resolution has 25 other points on the digital market so it's indeed just mentioned as a possible option, it's not binding for the European Committee and no, it doesn't mention Google, but speaks about search engines in general.

The reality in Europe however is that Google has about 90% of the search market. Much higher than in the US, so concerns over a monopoly are realistic and if the EC takes measures they will be targeted at Google.

If it would eventually happen it would mean Google Search would become a separate company selling results and ads to the highest bidders. Products like Google Now could be offered by different companies based on the same search. It seems most likely that the Google the ad seller would be forced to become an independent division as well, but this is all speculation at the moment.

When the US government split up the Bell telephone company, the press referred to the daughters as baby Bells. When it was seriously considered to split up Microsoft, the pun returned in 'Baby Bill's'. Any suggestions for a similar pun on Google daughters?

European Right To Be Forgotten should be respected worldwide
All European citizens have this right, but where should it be exercised? Is it only valid within the European community or is it a transnational right? Can you bypass filters by going to google.com?

The current implementation by Google is that the right to be forgotten can indeed be bypassed by going to directly to google.com instead of google.de/es or whatever your local redirect is.

Most Europeans -often without realizing - get redirected to their country domain when searching on Google. No problem and the results are correctly filtered.

However when going outside of these domains, directly to google.com f.i. suddenly the 'forgotten' information surfaces again.

After a few months of studying on the implementation details the so called Working Party (representatives of privacy organizations from all EU countries) has decided that the right is universal so the results should be filtered by the search engines whatever the domain name.

Interesting first result (there is more to come this week) as this typical European discussion now gets extended to a global one. The reasoning of course is - as so often - that this is a universal right. For now the working party restricts it to Europeans or people living in Europe, but the universal claim is still there.

Just like f.i. Americans expect their right to free speech to be valid wherever they are, so can Europeans expect their right to be forgotten to be valid independent of the location of the searcher.

However here, these two 'universal' rights clash. The right to free speech (which at least in California seems to stretch into search results),  conflicts with the new requirement that google has to filter wherever they present data*

We have been shortchanged on privacy by Google

Gave it a few weeks, but by now we can safely conclude that Google didn't live up to the promise of control over privacy settings in Android 5.0

At Google I/O app control was firmly promised, but it didn't materialize.

App privacy controls still missing from Android 5 / Lollipop
There is a lot of money to be made by selling our privacy so the business model of app developers often relies on harvesting your private data. Enter the world of app privacy controls....

We have all been there: installing a simple app (say a flashlight) which demands access to all our location, contacts and photos, wants to use the microphone and camera and insists on using the internet for itself while sending texts on our costs.

The even more sneaky apps install with a normal list of permissions, but on the first update extend this enormously.

Most users just say accept without even scrolling down the list, but some of us would like to control what an app can do on our phone. Happy to let the flashlight app control the camera flash, but why give it access to our contacts or location to resell these data to an unknown third party.

For a short period Android (4.2.2) offered exactly this possibility to control the permissions of apps. You could allow or deny individual permissions. If you went too far, the app stopped working, but in most cases you got the functionality you wanted without the intrusion on your privacy.

App Ops was brilliant and applauded by privacy organization EFF, but rapidly removed by Google. This control by users was not 'ready for prime-time' so there was hope it would return in Android 5.

Unfortunately it's missing from today's announcements. What we got in terms of privacy is default encryption (nice if you lose your phone) and so called SELinux which will help against malware and controls access on a system level but it's not user controlled.

However Android 5 / Lollipop won't protect you against the software you install yourself. Lots of apps are basically malware as they only exist to spy on you and sell your privacy, but you were the one who accepted the long list of 'permissions' so officially it was your choice to sell out.

Android 5 offers us a security lollipop while we need actual user control over apps. Disappointing that Google didn't dare to break the business model of sneaky apps

What would be your choice: fine control with the slight risk that the installed app won't work as expected or the current black and white model of 'accept all' versus 'don't install'?

Sony Pictures hacked and business secrets held for ransom
Hackers who call themselves 'Guardians of Peace' claim they possess a huge trove of confidential data which they threaten to release if their demands are not met.

What the group wants from Sony Pictures is unclear: a message popped up on all internal computers demanding cooperation before 23.00 GMT (a few hours ago).

The hackers released a list of files claimed to be in their possession to the public. People who looked at them tell the list is extremely long and contains filenames like:

Nothing happened after the deadline passed so either it was bluff (unlikely, but possible at this moment) or hackers and Sony are discussing how to proceed.___

Is Uber a tech disruption or just another way of the good old taxi industry?

I know that I have been a bit harsh on Uber, but it's one of those startups that get so much attention for all the wrong reasons. It's in no way a shining example of crowdsourcing. It's more of a black sheep.

This morning, Business Insider posted a leaked presentation detailing Uber's actual revenue for the Month of December 2013. And we can use that to see exactly how much money Uber's drivers are actually making.

Uber themselves claims that their drivers earn an average of $93,000 per year, but no journalist has yet been able to get even close to that. And this leaked presentation doesn't get any closer either.

http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-revenue-rides-drivers-and-fares-2014-11?op=1

For instance, we can simply look at the revenue for December for each of the big cities, and divide that with the number of drivers. This gives us the average revenue per driver.

The number we end up with $3,200 per month, per driver (on average). That's about $40,000, or half of what Uber claims in their PR releases.

But we are talking overall revenue here, not what the drivers take home. Of this we have to deduct the revenue share that goes to Uber, and then we have the massive costs of the drivers who have to supply their own cars, their own insurance, their own gas, their own vacation pay, healthcare, and their own maintenance. This makes up about 65% of their income.

The result is that each driver, on average (using Uber's own data), only earns $1,000 a month. That's what's left over when all those expenses have been paid.

There is one element missing here, of course. Some drivers work full-time while others only work part-time, which skews the numbers.

So, let's look at 'fare per driver hour' which average around $20 according to Uber's presentation. And once again we take out Uber's share and the cost for the driver, and we are left with a salary of about $6-$8 per hour actively working.

Now, this is not exactly worse than the Taxi companies, who have long had a reputation of very poor salaries. We often hear about Taxi drivers having to work 12-hour shifts and from that barely earn the minimum wage. But it does mean that Uber as a company is not a better model. It's a better concept than regular taxis, but it's not a better model.

And my problem with this, as an analyst, is that Uber today is riding on a wave 'startup buzz'. People are excited about them because it's new, it's tech, it's Silicon Valley, and it's backed by tech VCs. And they are different and feel fresh. But when the driver's salaries are as bad as those of the taxi companies, and working conditions being just as brutal, this 'buzz' won't last.

So, to me, I think that Uber in the future will be seen the same way as we today look regular taxi companies. They will have the same kind of problems, the same lack passions, and the same 'we don't really trust you' kind of feel to them.

We can already see the start of this today.

Uber is not really solving anything. They are changing a few things about how we order and pay for a ride. But down the line... it's just the same old.

This also links to all these stories we see like "Uber will be the future of public transit". No they won't. Their model is completely unsustainable compared to buses and subways.

BTW: This is not about Uber either. Other ride-sharing concepts have the same problem. Companies like Lyft might be run by more ethical executives, but they too are not creating a new form of transportation that is financially better than the taxis.

We are not really moving forward here. Sure, it's great that we now have an app, and that paying for the ride is automatic. It's also great that drivers and passengers are ranked. But underlining problems with transporting people are the same as always.

If we really want to solve the problem, we have to find a way to dramatically remove some of the cost. ___Is Uber a tech disruption or just another way of the good old taxi industry?

Social Media Network Tsu got to a million users within a month
Offering to pay for posts sounds like a winning formula, but getting momentum on social media is hard. Very hard.

Facebook grew organically which took more than a decade. Twitter took eight years and ended up with a top-down model with lots of users, but weak connections between its users.

Ello is just a few months younger than Tsu, burt it's difficult to get solid numbers from them. Looking at engagement figures proper estimates would be in the millions or less.

Tsu however is very transparent so I can vow for the graph below as I made it myself from sources available to anyone with an interest.

Fashionably old-fashioned?

Why is it that older folks suddenly seem to loose their sense of fashion? Is it the industry not giving them anything else to wear or are they willingly getting dressed like in a uniform? Is it peer pressure? Is it their kids telling them that they "cannot dress like that" if they wear anything else but bland jackets and old-fashioned shoes?

Please, don't let me end up like that.___Fashionably old-fashioned?

Google search to be replaced by Yahoo in the US

The interesting thing is that Google Search isn't as dominant in the US as it's in Europe. This move by Firefox won't change much in the US,

If a similar deal (maybe not with Yahoo) would be offered in Europe it could actually help Google as it's much more dominant and hence prone to fall victim to monopoly / market dominance accusations over here.

Not so sure I would like Yahoo as my default search engine. You?

Which car is this? Do you recognize it? Play the guessing game.

It's my turn, so let me know the model and make please. If you find this on a share, remember to answer on the original.

First to guess it correctly can upload a new 'Which car' and start a new round of the game.

Rules: existing car (no concept car / must have been in production), you can manipulate the image to obscure logos and obstruct Google image search, but don't deform the car.

You can ask for hints if it's too hard.

How to get a child to think critically

This article contains illustrative examples which resonate to my personal educational experience throughout school - I remember how much I would detest all the test questions that I got wrong because I answered 'What word means .....' with a synonym of the vocabulary list word instead of that word itself, or because I had written out a fraction instead whereas the answer key rounded to two decimals, or because my experimental measured lab value was not close enough to the expected experimental value, and so on.

But the bigger and more immediate question remains unanswered by the article, if the current system doesn't teach children how to think critically, how do we teach those children critical thinking?

But the bigger and more immediate question remains unanswered by the article, if the current system doesn't teach children how to think critically, how do we teach those children critical thinking?

For starters, I'd humbly propose a few suggestions:

1) Do misuse everything you can.
Learning goal: Do not take anything for granted.
Why can't a bed be an ironing board? Why can't a cardboard box turn into a toy bridge? Or a diaper be an emergency sunshade? All is well, until the kids reach kindergarten and start getting told off by the teachers on what is and isn't acceptable, and now they tell me what I should be doing and are continually astounded that whatever alternative I'm doing actually works. Yes, Mama is crazy... and not a bit ashamed of it.

2) Do try out stupid things.
Learning goal: Test things out yourself.
Why not eat a lemon together? Go out in the rain without a raincoat? Stick a balloon on a needle? Microwave a CD? Try to fix a broken radio with Google's help instead of taking it to the repair shop? The result is sudden, golden insights bringing very diverse topics together: 'Mama, going out in the rain is just like taking a shower, so I don't have to wash my hair tonight!' (No, Mama did not teach that!)

3) Do make silly excuses.
Learning goal: Create inventive and fluent arguments.
Yes, my son does rolls his eyes when I offer completely outrageous reasons. And laughs when I challenge him to test the reasons himself (he knows better than to believe everything I say). But he also started answer commands such as 'Time to go to bed' as tactfully as any politician asked to give a spontaneous statement on a controversial topic.

The major advantage of Facebook is that the interface is already well-known: no training needed for the socializing parts. However document sharing and calendars are unknowns at the moment where Google and Microsoft have a huge advantage.

The most problematic issue will of course be the privacy/security aspect. Facebook is trying hard to change it's bad name, but it will take time to create the needed trust.

Can you imagine using Facebook At Work at your place?___

A rebuttal to the 'Kim liberated our bodies' school

Hi. Read this.

And prepare to utter "whoa." Excerpt:

"Saartjie was a woman whose large buttocks brought her questionable fame and caused her to spend much of her life being poked and prodded as a sexual object in a freak show.

"Sound familiar?

"But something tells me Kim probably has no clue about the cultural and historic significance of what she’s done. Instead she probably just thought it would be cool to do an edgy photo shoot with famous photographer. And many of you have fallen for that oversimplified stance as well."

Now we get to hear an actual recording of a call made by Ronald Reagan during the Grenada crisis. Yes, that's a long time ago and most of you won't remember the details, but suffice to say it's one of the forgotten invasions.

For all kind of reasons the US, overnight, decide to occupy the little island of Grenada. So little that they had less than 100.000 inhabitants so no wonder the US won the smallest of wars they ever fought.

And yes, it was all about worries that the lefties / commies would take over in a part of the world which at that time was part of the US 'sphere' of interest. Google Grenada occupation and Monroe doctrine for a solid background.

The fun part of this phone call was that Margaret Thatcher was majorly pissed of by the unexpected invasion of an island belonging to the former British imperium, the Commonwealth.

The day before the invasion Margaret had told 'Ron' in no uncertain terms that she opposed military intervention and reminded him that it was her backyard, not his. That night however the US stormed the beaches of Grenada, embarrassing Britain.

What you hear below is an American president trying to make excuses the following morning. Trusting on his personal charms, but they all fall flat. He gets a very cold shoulder by the Iron Lady, who - interesting tidbit - also reminds him long phone calls can be intercepted.___

Open source Real-Time PCR Thermocycler
This is very cool. Functionality is obviously not as advanced (yet?) as high-end DNA sequencers in medical and/or forensic labs, but just the idea of having the ability to have your own PCR DNA diagnostics device on your desktop at home for just $1500 and experimenting with DNA research is just mind-blowing. Or the amazing possibilities of a low cost DNA sequencer for serious work in third world countries or disease hotspots. And since both the hardware and software will be released as open source the possibilities and future developments are basically only limited by the imagination of the people.___An open source do it yourself DNA sequencer on Kickstarter

However totaling over the day the interaction in terms of plusses/likes, comments and reshares was comparable.

Is this a message that G+ lost its initial momentum? That spirit of June 2011 where we all belonged to the same group eager to share and build a platform? I, for one can't deny that this is part of the lure. Change and the excitement to start all over without the established base most of us enjoy on G+

I currently have only five hundred something people following my posts on Tsu versus the amazing 66.000 here on G+. My most popular post on Tsu (https://www.tsu.co/post/1088748) generated only 360 views where even a mediocre post on G+ easily hits about five thousand. My really popular posts on G+ reach multitudes of it.

And yet: I get engagement on Tsu. People discus what I write. The number one reason I'm on G+ and Tsu already matches that. How can that happen considering Tsu so far is understandably seen as a spammers paradise devoid of 'serious' posters?

Is it because the good folks of G+ are on Tsu as well? Are they migrating to Tsu just to safeguard their vanity url as Tsu is handing them out to the first person to grab tsu.co/yourname?

Nope. Some of the commenters, plussers sorry likers, and sharers are new to me. It's not a replication of the people who interact with me on G+.

Lots of us on G+ were cynical. Money would spoil it all. Did we make the wrong assessment? Did we underestimate the new David of the social networks? Is real interaction possible on this new network in spite of the lure of money?

If you're on Tsu.co how was your experience last week and how does it compare to G+

(Tsu is an invite only network which unfortunately can't be read without registering. If you want to register you can follow tsu.co/MaxHuijgen)

P.S. Tsu doesn't have text formatting, but that might be better than the frustration of trying to get just one sentence in italics.)___

Are there universal values?

+David Amerland is exploring the concept of shared values and defines them as Something which the entire organisation, company, culture, country supports.

I find it a tricky subject as it's a common mistake to confuse your own values with universal ones.  Shared values can certainly be found, but on a much lower level of abstraction than people assume.

We can agree on not killing the innocent, but not on who we find innocent.

It's a problem of inclusiveness. Who is 'us' and who are they. To share values and get them to work as an organizing, unifying tool, we need to address 'group feel' / our self defining units.

The Value of "Shared Values"

I am involved in a project at the moment about which I cannot say a lot but here's a thought that's kinda evolving:

Everything we do, whether it’s leaving the house in the evening to buy a litre of milk or going to work in the morning to chair a team meeting and put together a sales report is underpinned by a sense of shared values. Something which the entire organisation, company, culture, country supports. It is different perhaps at different levels but in its general orientation it is the same. A company that believes in the homicide of those in its staff who perform poorly as a justifiable means of its executives rising through the ranks is going to find itself at odds in every country in the world. Such is the severity of the dislocation of its values with those of the world around it. That company may have at its core a set of processes, each reducible into clearly analytical, logical and analysable tasks but unless the outcomes to which those processes lead to are compatible within the broader set of values around them, they are unlikely to be acceptable.

Values, shared values are part of our personal worldview and as such have the ability to move us to do great things or lead us down paths where we perform actions that are hard to comprehend.   ___Are there universal values?

'We' often becomes - the sales department - or more often as actual companies go, the engineering department having values who they feel are not represented at a company value.

Shared values only work if you can make them operational on the group level you address.

Are there universal values, or at least shared values on a high enough level to matter?

Every customer you touch will walk away feeling very different

From a briefing for Apple store staff. Newsworthy part is that the Apple Watch will be delayed until spring, but the part in blue surely is some religious message.

On a very related note: Apple customers will be able to try out and find the new watches. Staff will be trained in - fitting it on- touching you.

HP's new sprout looks like fun, but will it be productive?  Reaching out to repeatedly touch a screen quite far from you is not the most ergonomic solution.

Microsoft's Surface table approach (now called PixelSense) did away with the separation between a touch screen and a worktop. Pity we never saw consumer priced models of it.

See Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft® PixelSense™ for the Microsoft approach.

A Question and Answer session on the new Tsu social network

Q: What is Tsu
A: A new social network that promises to redistribute the ad income over its users after subtracting a fee for itself.

Q: How do I get an invite?
A: All you have to do is follow www.tsu.co/maxhuijgen and you can register. It really is the easiest way. If you prefer to go to tsu.co instead they’ll ask you for an invite. Use ‘Maxhuijgen’ without apostrophes and you have achieved exactly the same as by following the link (most common question by now…)

Q: I heard it’s a pyramid/Ponzi/Mlm scheme, so is it a fraud?
A: I went into some detail in this G+ post http://bit.ly/1tkBtGP Best thing is to read it. The tl;dr version: no, it’s not a Ponzi scheme as nobody except the advertisers are paying for it, but I can’t guarantee anything about the ethics of the company behind Tsu. I’m not connected to them and know no more than is publically available.

Q:  But you make money of it, don’t you?
A: I just checked and yes I do. I earned $1.42 over five days, but the trend is downwards…  Assuming I spent about 1500 words explaining Tsu I made 0.1 cent per word.  A data entry job in Pakistan pays better and after this Q&A it will be even worse.

Q: People profit from others signing up, correct?
A: Yes, that’s at the heart of Tsu. That’s how they expect to grow the network. From the cents people make who sign up ‘under’ your invite you get 1/3. So the guy I picked got half a dollar ‘from me’ for doing nothing.

However there is no way to avoid this, so if you don’t want me to be the benefactor of your ‘income’, just pick another invite. There is no way you can avoid losing that part of the ad income. You’ll always get a max of 50% of the ad share. No more, whatever you do.

As a strategy it might make sense to sign up under someone you expect to respect your content and acts responsibly himself. If you end up in a chain of self promoters with stolen / non-copyright content you could be off much worse.

Q: I have my doubts
A: We all have, but that’s not a question ;)

Q: Why advocate Tsu?
A: That’s not what I’m doing. I’m interested in alternative social networks. I have looked at as good all of them. Some warm my heart, some show promise. Most (will) fail because of lack of scale. Read my other G+ post http://bit.ly/1rv8ytQ for more. The Tsu formula is interesting. If that company fails, turns out to be a fraud, doesn’t know how to handle the view scammers heading their way, the formula is still interesting as it could scale up.

At this moment I see it as an alternative for Facebook which is failing as the place to communicate with your family and friends due to the commercial business model. If the largest network on the earth expects you to pay to get your posts seen, it’s time for a different approach. Tsu has potential, even if it fails and gets reincarnated in a better version. Diaspora with ads and a sharing model?

Q: I produce quality original content and am concerned about the Terms and Conditions

A: Best question so far. There is a huge discrepancy between the FAQ telling you that you’ll always stay the owner of your content and the actual T&C you have to agree with. I’m digging into it as I want to get to the bottom of it. If it’s not a safe place for writers and photographers Tsu has to change its policy. I’m discussing it. Stay tuned.

Q: Shut up, I already registered to see how it works but now I want to know….

- How to edit your posts? At the time of writing you can’t and yes that sucks.

- My post is unreadable!  Writing is a gift, but did you mean it became one long sentence? That’s not your fault. That’s the way it currently is and that’s why I didn’t produce this post on Tsu. A shame, so stay away from it for now if you love your words.

- How to delete my profile as I don’t like it. Try the helpdesk, so far they have been helpful. I’ll update this shortly with a more firm answer.

Q:  I made it up to here, but my question isn’t answered
A: Congrats. I plan to write a more insightful post digging a bit deeper and going into the 'good, bad and ugly' of Tsu, but this should deal with most direct questions.

You could try the comments for more. If you use my invite I will be most obliged ;)

Q: Psst, something completely different, I was actually bothering you on whatsapp for a Inbox@Google.com invite
A: Shame on you anyway! I don’t have them and if I had, I wouldn’t share them to strangers in my whatsapp.

The trigger to post this was the abuse of my whatsapp account and DM's. Please: Do not use my whatsapp, text or phone to ask for these questions

It makes no sense as I already published a working invite and it’s extremely annoying. Yes, my phone number is listed on G+, but that doesn’t mean it’s to be used for silly and often rude questions by strangers.___Updates to the Tsu Q&A:

Quite a statement. Tsu is progressing very rapidly. Suspicions about it being the new sinkhole of the web were understandable a week ago, but day to day Tsu is proving people wrong. It doesn't want to be the new Buzzfeed with a lowest denominator of memes and animated gifs; apparently it really wants to be a platform for original content.

Sharing of copyrighted works [unless of course your own ;)] is discouraged as well as spamming the network with cheap requests to 'share for the money'. For the moment there are posting and sharing limits to control this undermining behavior. Not what people expected a week ago. A network already more mature than Facebook in a decade.

If you're in doubt about your rights as a creative content provider, either with texts, photos, design or videos check my reference post https://plus.google.com/u/3/112352920206354603958/posts/941sZnyD21s covering G+, facebook, Ello and Tsu in a comparitve study.

At this speed of development Tsu wil not only catch up rapidly with existing social networks, but set a new standard in user driven development

if you need an invite to look at Tsu you can use www.Tsu.co/MaxHuijgen. Don't forget that all these vanity urls like mine can be taken by anyone signing up so register before you lost it to a spammer ___

I would keep your snail mail +Mike Elgan If you opt for email instead they will make a copy of the inside instead of a photograph of the outside of every piece of mail sent in the U.S.

Best reason yet to opt out of snail mail

The US Postal Service takes a photograph of every piece of mail sent in the US, then shares those pictures with law enforcement agencies who request it.

The Post Office approved nearly 50,000 requests last year.

Excellent questions, food for thought.

The butterfly effect: Apple launches iPhone in 2007, Duracell's dead in 2014.

Ok, Duracell's not dead. Growth is slowing down. At two billion dollars in sales, it will take a while for Duracell to die. But. There is zero doubt that the smartphone has reduced the need for us to have many of the devices we normally use alkaline batteries in. And, the trend is irreversible.

We don't use Cameras as much, ditto for Camcorders. We don't have as many kids toys (including little ones like Leapfrog pad that my kids used). We don't have flashlights in our house (ok, one, with a dead battery). I'm starting to use my Nexus 5 as my TV remote. No need for hotel clocks or radios at home or away. Our children have to buy a TI $130 calculator, I don't understand why I can't give them a old Nexus phone with an app on it.

And all of the above not to mention, I don't need GPS units, I don't need my watch (though Apple is trying to tempt me with one!) and so many other things.

Did all of these companies worry that Apple is out to kill them? And yet, it is. And, it will.

It brings up a interesting question. If you were in the calculator, radio, clock, gps, camera, tv remote, children's toys, etc. business, what were you really in the business of?

And, they taught us this in MBA school, if you thought of yourself as being in the business of helping with math, bringing information, helping people get to places, preserve memories, deliver entertainment, would you have been able to survive because your strategy was not limited by the product your company made but rather the customer need it was solving for?

Interesting to think about if you are a business leader.

And, would that have saved Duracell?

[Minor rant: What would have saved Duracell, and its brother Energizer, is an ability to create a massively better battery! Why does Duracell/Energizer not have the iPhone contract? Corning did for glass but creating a massively unique product for Mr. Jobs.]___Excellent questions, food for thought.

Photography is not only one of the older crafts, it’s also a reasonably well-organized business with established rights and licenses so let’s assume we share a photo on a social network and see what happens according to the fine print they all have. As an author, designer or video producer your case will be similar.

We will compare the two powerhouses Facebook and G+ with newcomers Ello (devoid of any commercial interest) and Tsu (as commercial as you can get). The actual terms in the fine print of all four all start with the promising statement resembling ‘It’s your content’.

Facebook offers the most human readable introduction ‘You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings. Sounds nice and it’s very affirmative compared to the weaker statement by Tsu ‘We do not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service’, which is as good as identical to Ello’s wording.

Google uses the more legalize ‘You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content.’ but follows it with the clear position: ‘In short, what belongs to you stays yours.’ The wording may be different, but legally these are all similar statements

Conclusion 1: All networks pay lip service to your right to your content, but as you will see, they all follow it up with very tricky disclaimers and if there is a devil, it will indeed be in the details

There is always a ‘but’ and it’s worded in similar terms. Let’s take Ello, the network which is backed by a non profit organization, has sworn never to show ads and should be friendliest on its users:
'However, when you post or transfer Content to the Ello Services, you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, transferable license to use, store, reproduce, adapt (so we can properly post your Content), distribute and publicly display your Content in order to provide the Ello Services.'

So as a photographer (your assumed role for this post) you just gave away a free license to your photo. Non-exclusive so you can still sell it to someone else, but often the commercial terms you enter when you actually manage to sell a photo are that you provide the owner an exclusive license. After posting it on Ello you are no longer in a position to offer exclusivity to any client. Certainly a bummer so you should avoid posting your photo on Ello?

Maybe you should reconsider posting on any social network if this would concern you. Facebook, Google and Tsu all state that you give them a license. Google doesn’t want to tell you if it’s exclusive or not, just ‘a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works […], communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.' Fb and Tsu are both explicit in non-exclusive. Not that it makes a difference; if you happen to have the money to take it to court every judge will agree with you that you didn’t mean to give Google exclusive rights.

Conclusion 2: you lost your own exclusive rights when you posted on any of these social networks.

In legalese we could look at the other technical terms like ‘worldwide’, ‘transferable’, perpetual, irrevocable but we won’t as there is hardly a difference between the four networks. What matters to real people are things like ‘can you get out of this license for that specific photo’. Not if the agreement in itself is irrevocable, but if you can pull your content and get your complete rights back.

Well, you can’t. Facebook is very nice and says no problem, but follows it with ‘, unless your content has been shared with others and they have not deleted it’. Good news if you’re a lousy photographer and nobody cared to share it, but otherwise you’re just as stuck as with Google's ‘This license continues even if you stop using our Services’, Ello or Tsu just use ‘perpetual license’ to make sure you will never own that content exclusively again.

Conclusion 3: your soul belongs to us and you will never get your rights back whatever you do

So these social networks now have a license on your photo / artistic work. What can they actually do with it? Unfortunately everything! Really everything: use it as promotion material, share it with other companies, change it to make it fit their requirements, offer it as part of a new service. If you look closely enough there is not that much of a difference between the four networks.

On face value the nicest of the bunch seems Google as they tell you ‘The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones.’

So it’s limited, but to what? If Google wanted to start a new service ‘Ready Made Images’ if could offer your photo as part of that new business. You agreed to ‘give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license’. So even another company could use your creative work as you already agreed to that when signing up.

Tsu asks for the broadest permissions as they claim the right to ‘reverse engineer’ your work, but you would be safe from that as it’s impossible to offer software through Tsu. More worrying are terms like ‘sell, lend, rent’ as options you gave them when posting your creative work.

However both Ello and Google also state that they have the right to distribute your content or transfer it to others (‘transferable license to use says Ello’) Ello also point to other users ‘you are agreeing to allow other Ello Services members and members of the public [..] to view, distribute and display your Content’. Google limits these rights to itself and ‘those we work with’. whoever that might be.

Facebook seems to offer the best terms here as they limit themselves to ‘to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook’ but as they earlier claimed the right to sub-license it (meaning someone else could get their rights) your legal status is still hopeless.

(Unclear at the moment: is Ello’s explicit permission that other users can distribute your work worse than the basic conditions of the other three networks? Readers in the know?)

Conclusion 4: all social networks can legally do whatever they want with your content. Sell it, change it, transfer it to another company, give it away or delete it

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tl; dr version: after close-reading all Terms and Conditions of the four networks it’s impossible to pick a winner. Facebook, Google, Ello and Tsu offer very similar conditions which drill down to ‘It’s your content, but we can do whatever we want with it’.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your business depends on having an exclusive license on your work, you should avoid all four, otherwise just pick a (combination of) network(s) which presents your creative work in the best way possible and to the audience you’re after.

Ello is a great network if you want to invest in an ad-free, clean looking platform, but it doesn't offer photographers and other creatives a large audience and the T&C is just as bad as elsewhere.

Facebook offers potentially the largest audience, but it's filters don't show all content to your fans Without spending money on promotions you're not sure it will actually reach people. Best avoided unless you only want to show it to close friends and family.

If you want to monetize your work on social media your only option is Tsu which will pay you a share of the ad revenue based on the popularity of your work. An interesting model for photographers looking for some income from the sharing of their work.

If you are happy with eternal fame and the gratitude of your audience G+ is currently your best choice as it already has a warm climate for creative content

Ello and Tsu are invite only networks. For Tsu just use the link tsu.co/MaxHuijgen and register. I also have a few invites for Ello left for serious photographers. PM me.

Almost a quarter of a century passed from the first bombs on Baghdad to the current battle for Kobani and strangely enough the tools of war hardly changed. Yes there are drones now, but other than that it are still B1 bombers, cruise missiles, ordinary artillery and Kalashnikovs which determine the outcome of conflicts all over the world.

The tools of propaganda though reached a new high at the first Gulf war in '91 when we could see greenish images of the bombing runs on the city of Baghdad and CNN's Peter Arnett covered it live on CNN from the rooftop of his hotel.

We were treated to first 'person' videos of so called smart bombs destroying military targets. We were led to believe that war had became chirurgical. No real people were killed or even involved. Just a cross-mark on a head up display seconds before another enemy target was destroyed. Yet another playstation kill accomplished.

That very same chirurgical image of neat killings was disrupted by Peter Arnett who visited the wreckages of houses, schools, even hospitals. The propaganda war reached a new high and the Pentagon learned an important lesson. Don't show the killings as someone will go to the scene and prove you wrong.

Nowadays the Western powers fly sorties in a theatre. Nobody gets killed anymore. The pentagon sometimes vaguely reports hitting 'Isil compounds', but is no longer boasting about this destroying of the sleeping quarters of the rebels. Death hidden in weasel words.

So we went a long way from Vietnam where the commies just represented the evil empire and enemy kills was the benchmark of progress to wars which were renamed  'conflicts' where casualties were an anomaly we all preferred to keep quiet.

Long rant leading to the latest Islamic State video shown below. They finally caught up with the West in terms of effective propaganda. A better looking version of Peter Arnett is doing a stand up report from Ayn al Islam (which the Kurds and suddenly the West call Kobani).

In the Western media this will be called a scripted video under force (but Peter Arnett was equally accused of being a puppet of Saddam) and they would be right. However the effect on millions of viewers will be different. Here we see a proper Brit with the right accent explaining  "_Urban warfare is as about as nasty and tough as it gets, and it's something of a speciality of the mujahideen._"

IS claims victory by using the Western tools of propaganda. A drone used to film Ayn al Islam, a warm, comforting voice, a cinematography resembling stand-ups by CNN and other professional networks and a narrative which leads the viewer into the inevitable victory of the Islamic State.

TL;DR It's a shame John Cantlie as a hostage to IS has to do this, but it's a sign of the times where propaganda tools finally match those of the Western powers.___

Is anonimity really the cause of all evil on the web?

On the question of the graphic: I'm a number two from the left unfortunately :)

If only I was wiser, but this weekend my provider caused me into 'turn off the internet' and I still managed to dig myself into holes too deep for my mental health on a 64kbits line.

If you are online, and even if you are God herself, there is someone who disagrees with you. And passionately!  Anonymity is empowering.

So how to deal with people who disagree with you?

I try #2, I am open to #1, sadly I can't ever pull off #7. How about you?___Is anonimity really the cause of all evil on the web?

State will appeal in Pistorius 'murder' trial: a backgrounder
After 'bladerunner' Pistorius got off with a relatively light sentence of five years the state prosecutor Nell announced today that they will appeal. No doubt most South-Africans will be happy as the idea that he would get away with possibly just 10 months in jail didn't go well.

The reason for the light sentence was that the judge didn't find Pistorius guilty of premeditated murder, in other words she was convinced he didn't have the intention to kill his girlfriend Reevan Steenkamp. Understandable as there were only two witnesses and one is dead now and the other not willing to testify against himself.

Circumstantial evidence wasn't considered strong enough to convict him from willingly murdering Reeva.

However the presiding judge also ruled that he didn't have the intention to kill the person in the toilet. He shot four times through the door from close range which experts agree is very likely to kill any person sitting or standing there. In so called 'Dolus eventualis' you are guilty of non-premeditated murder if could foresee that your action is very likely to kill someone. She found the state not convincing in proving this.

Now South-African law is quite different as an appeal doesn't mean the trial will be done all over again. You can only appeal on an issue of law; very similar to Supreme Court appeals or whatever the name of the highest court in any legislation. State prosecutor Nell will claim that the judge was wrong  in interpreting this dolus eventualis. Pistorius could have know that shooting into a small cubicle would kill whoever was behind that door.

So we won't see a new parade of all the witnesses, no vomiting Pistorius, no heated cross-examinations. It will be a discussion about interpreting law. No doubt disappointing for the millions who followed the trial and have their own opinions on the guilt of bladerunner.

These very public trials where journalists and cameras record every word, every emotion inevitably lead to an opinion on the guilt of the protagonist. The public doesn't take a month to study all the witness statements in the cool of a judicial chamber. The public verdict is made up based on emotions: how believable is the defendant, how sympathetic the victim, how convincing the rhetoric of the lawyers.

Do you have an opinion on the guilt of Pistorius or do you accept whatever the appeal court decides? And should people always be held responsible for murder when firing at close range___

Have things you would like to see added to this Q&A?

Yes, my phone number is listed on G+, but that doesn’t mean it’s to be used for silly and often rude questions by strangers.___Have things you would like to see added to this Q&A?

Social network Tsu not a pyramid (MLM) scheme, but organic at heart
Most of us balked when we heard that Tsu ( an new social network if you don't know  it, use www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen as an invite, but please read on) not only pays for content (which is great) but does so depending on your position in the hierarchy of the network. We all  (at least the decent content providers over here) shiver thinking that we could be part of some multi level marketing scheme as we know that the bottom part of the pyramid will always lose out.

Let's see how it really works. Tsu says it will share it's ad revenues over all users according to their part in the generated views. So far so good. If Facebook would do this with about about 65% active users out of a total of 1.3 billion the net result would be (ball park figure) $10 per facebook user.

Now Tsu can't live from nothing so it says it will take 10% of total ad revenue and distribute the rest over its users. Following the facebook example every fb active user would still get $9 per year and FB would have 1 billion revenue. Everybody happy....

The reality and something Tsu acknowledges is that ad revenues depend on page views. In other words popular posters create more views and hence more eyes on the ads surrounding these posts.

Let's assume an extremely conservative 1:100 scenario for posts versus views on FB instead of the naive 1:1. It would up the ad revenue per poster to $900.

If the actual ratio is more like 1:100.000 it would mean successful posters would actually earn $90.000. Everyone who ever looked at the G+ figures as collected on +CircleCount will know that the distribution is even more skewed than that so posters with some traction would earn even more.

The MLM / Pyramid scheme in action
Tsu states that you only get 50% after distracting their fee of 10%. So to put it into perspective the $100 are now reduced to $45 (half of the $100 minus the 10% fee).

So far so good. Effectively 45% of all ad generated income is more than you get elsewhere. The quality of the deal doesn't depend on that percentage, but on the upstream income. Your content is instrumental to the number of ad views so determine your income. You only get 45% but where do you get a better deal?

But what happens to the other $45/.50%?
It gets distributed by a typical multi level marketing system. From your half of the hypothetical $90 the other half is distributed over something called the family tree, but it's nothing else than a MLM scheme.

If you signed up through http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen the other $45 will be split over his channel. Do note that even if you use another account, that 50% of the user split is always going somewhere. If you use a different account to sign up: he or she will get that share.

What happens to the other $45 in this example? It get's split up over the lineage of people you signed up with up. The so called family tree.

Let's quote the FAQ:
Tsū’s algorithm automatically tracks, measures, and distributes revenue to the appropriate user and their family tree.

At a high level, 90% of revenues are distributed to users. To maintain the platform, tsū receives 10%. To see how this breaks down, let’s take a look at 4 users, all with varying start dates on tsū.

User A invites user B, who invites user C, who invites user D

Part 1
- $100 of earned revenue is generated based on the content user D shared (photos, videos, status updates, etc.)

Part 2
- 90% of earned revenue go to the users. In this case, $90 of the $100 is shared with all the users.
- tsū takes 10% of the $100 for platform fees. In this case $10.

Part 3
- User D, the original content creator takes 50% of the $90. In this case, $45.
- User C gets 33.3% (1/3) of the original $90 generated. In this case, $29.70
- User B gets 11.1% (1/3 of 1/3 = 1/9) of the original $90 generated. In this case $9.99
- User A gets 3.70% (1/3 of 1/3 of 1/3 = 1/27) of the original $90 generated. In this case $3.33
- This is what we call the rule of infinite thirds _

I would say it's a rule of bad math or missing calculators as no way 1/3 of $90 will ever be 29.70. The math is wrong as they forget to use the elegant rule of using infinite 1/3's and substituted it with a stupide 0.33.

I hope to get more answers on the financial distribution tomorrow after interviewing the founders.

However it doesn't change the equation: most of the money goes to the content sharer (45% of total ad revenue) and the rest disappears in the 'upstream' channel of people you started following on Tsu.

So it's a MLM? Enriching the rich?
No, it's not as it's not a closed economy. Take your average Wellness or whatever MLM scam. The system is such that the highest levels profit from failed sales to end-users. In other words everyone except for the sucker at the bottom profits while he ends up with a garage full of wellness products.

Huh?, if it talks like an MLM, why wouldn't it be one?
Because of economy. There is no lowest level in Tsu as the real money comes from outside of the system. Ads. Not paid by you. The cake is growing without you eating it. I really appreciate +Mark Traphagen's article and completely understands his concerns, but in Tsu's case you can eat the cake and have it too.

Good questions you didn't even think about
If I f.i http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen sign up using another account am I not losing potential revenue? Is it not better to be at the top of the pyramid?

Not really: the income distribution is so that you don't lose a penny wherever in the pyramid you enter. The person 'above' you has a slight profit if you're successful but not at your expense. You will always get your 45% net of the ad income.

It does help however to use invitations from people who are capable of promoting your content. They do have a vested interest as they earn something independent of the success of your content.

If you're looking for a strategy I suggest picking people who are willing and capable to promote your_ content. Not people who are famous as they don't win more than pennies from your activities, nor people who offer you a log-in code without a real interest in promoting quality content.

It's a sound model and beneficial to content providers as well as consumers. The cake is not a limited one so it's certainly not a MLM model. We should all be capable of profiting from it but scale is crucial

Use www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen to sign up and grow the cake ;)___If you prefer to discuss Tsu within the community here is a share of my public post

Why you should join Tsu, the first paying social network, even if you're not interested in the money at all ( If you want to have a look before reading on use www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen as an invite to get acquainted, but do read on.)

It's raining men social networks lately (Ello, Diaspora, Medium and many more) and most of them are bound to fail. Not because they don't have a compelling idea which drives them and makes them truly social, but because the network part is the hard part.

Networks need scale and they need it fast. Look at the one successful newcomer G +, which with all the backing of Google, after three years still struggles in getting your friends and family on board. A new social network like Ello will never reach the needed critical mass and will implode whatever the great intentions driving it.

However, there is a new kid on the block and it's capable of disrupting the social network sphere. Not with an appeal on your social values or a guarantee to stay clear of big business, but with a promise to fill your pockets.

Tsu (apparently pronounced Sue...) starts with a new paradigm. It's a platform for your content, posts/videos/photos stays yours (so no copyright transfers  / hand over all your rights as usual) and it's monetized by you.

Now that's quite a revolutionary change. Try find another platform where you keep owning the content after you share it. Ah wait, your personal blog of course! Except that although the content stays yours, monetization is quite hard. Running successful adword campaigns on personal blogs is not that easy.

Tsu offers to take care of the ads in exchange for 10% of the revenue instead of your soul a lousy adword deal on a rarely visited blog.  An interesting offer for quality content providers or not?

Well for most of us it means we would earn pennies a year so money is still not a compelling argument. If you care about your content you want foremost the best environment to present it and a network like G+ is hard to beat.

Great visuals, large and really interested audience, searchable and findable by Google search. What more could you want?

As an active content producer myself I would say there are things missing on facebook and G+. Just ignoring that neither of us is paid to post, what's missing are things like 'analytics'. How many eyeballs are seeing our posts? We don't know, we don't get the tools and only by very indirect tools like including an image in every post we get an impression if our post is read at all.

Sure since spring 2014 Google shows 'views' but it's not willing to tell us what it means. Seen in the stream, longer than 0.1 second, part of a WordPress default install or really clicked upon and seen by real people. Most of us got a bump of 100.000's or even tens of millions of views mid September. A week later they were gone.

We don't know. We are not allowed to know. All requests to clarify at least the September bump went unheard. Google is deaf for the one thing we content providers want most: feedback.

We stumble in the dark. We post and thanks to sites like +CircleCount we  have a vague idea how many plusses (likes), shares and 'views' we got over time, but content producing on G+ is mostly feeding a black box. We can't expect Google to pay content providers for G+ content as long as they don't show ads on the network. Fair enough.

But why are we left in the dark in terms of engagement? If you run a Google owned blogger platform you get statistics and monetization options. If you run a YouTube channel you get detailed stats and a decent chance to make money out of it if you're successful so why is the social network G+ excluded from it?

I for one am happy to see a social network which solves this. I don't mind if I get 0.0001 cent per view or a quarter per comment although I would prefer the latter :), but I do appreciate that Tsu gives you real feedback.  The availability of real analytics is in itself a reason to start posting there.

We all have an ego and want to see a reward for our content. Most of us are much more motivated by feedback than by upfront money, but a network which offers both is truly disruptive and deserves to grow

part two will delve deeper into Tsu and the apparently Multi Level Marketing  model underlying it. My first impression: it's actually generating worth so no MLM, but they could take a lesson in basic math...

If you need an invite to the network use http://www.tsu.co/MaxHuijgen if you care for a network which shares quality content as that will be the key to the future of Tsu and something I will promote wherever I can. Otherwise we will just end up with a new Buzzfeed, but that's for a  second post...

Coming soon including info on the actual revenue models. Want a notification of the follow up post, plus the post.
Edit: the follow up post is here https://plus.google.com/u/3/112352920206354603958/posts/3h7aNZozNiD

What operating system do people on G+ use most?
If you follow the topics around here, you would think Windows is as good as dead, Linux is it's successor and Chrome laptops are the new king in town.

But is it true? What operating system do you actually use most of the day including the computer at work, not what you prefer, not what you would like to use, not what other people should use,, but what's currently driving your most used desktop / laptop *

* If you have both, answer the poll with the device you use most.

* Chrome OS is an operating system, don't vote for it if Chrome is your browser as in that case you still run some other operation system (which might be Chrome OS of course ;)

Why can't Google take the lead and show you on hovering over the shortened link what the real destination is? Could be implemented in Chrome and later on in competitors browsers, but as a first step it could be introduced on G+.

Google owns Goo.gl so they could experiment with enhancing only their own shortened urls for a starter. Industry support will follow if people start using it and make better decisions in following links.

Assume I want to write about the flopped Fire phone and show people that Amazon reduced the price enormously to get rid of it's feature failure phone. In the text I would use something like http://goo.gl/M3FaZk  instead of the ridiculously long link http://www.amazon.com/Fire_Phone_13MP-Camera_32GB/dp/B00EOE0WKQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1414266090&sr=1-1&keywords=amazon+fire+phone

Here G+ could show us the first part bolded in the hoover so that we would quickly spot it would be a shopping link for the phone discussed.

My earlier example of http://goo.gl/Ksj57N leads to a G+ post with the not very informative https://plus.google.com/u/0/112352920206354603958/posts/4i2snUa7LHV as my proposed hoover version, but what if G+ expanded this even more by just showing '*G+ posting by Max Huijgen: A question and answer session on the new Tsu social network*'

In other words show the author and title of the G+ post which could easily be fetched by the G+ software.

That example for G+ internal links would be extremely informative but in both cases it would help people decide if they want to follow a link. It would make shortened urls transparent and hence more safe.

Why can't we have this? Is there a huge flaw in the proposal?
