Ferg Hyde0There seems to be not much in the way of circle sharing these days, certainly nowhere near as much as there was a couple of years ago. What you have here is a circle of Australian photographers. The Best Of The Best Of The  Best in Australia. If you are a photography fan of any sort, you would be Ack Willie not to add this one quick smart. If I have missed any Australian photographers who have hooped me, and I haven't hooped back, please let me know.2013-10-20 08:49:2911211011CC G+

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213CC G+

Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576CC G+

This is NOT 2 million volts. 2 MV will spark 2 yards. You can't compress that into a smaller volume. This is maybe 50,000 volts but probably less.
Lightning is between 10 - 100 MV by comparison.

A little article on our local TV station.
Based originally on some footage of my Open day but mostly shot the following day with interviews.
Laughed our way through lots of jokes and outtakes but I look pretty serious in the shots they kept.
I was really pleased with the big TC footage with HD video on my Nikon SLR camera taken a few months ago.
This was the second take of Rebecca drawing sparks on to her hand. She jumped so much the first time she left the video screen completely.

Imaginative comments required.

The dust is slowly settling from my Open day and after 2 days have put away around 3/4 of my 60 displays.

The Open day will without doubt be the biggest and most spectacular Tesla coil show in Western Australia ever. Possibly Australia.
I will have 4 running Tesla coils including a musical one playing original music written for it. Also a very large one, one for pool stunts and a small interactive one.
And the Tesla coils only account for perhaps half the show.
The stunts have been seen on TV by nearly 3 million people world wide this year alone with 2 other programs yet to air.
The night will be covered by the local press who have already done a pre-shoot.
The Physics Dept who took up their limited places and will do a display down here as well.

I’m just curious about complete lack of interest from the otherwise active local Tesla Forum. Strange.

First light (and sound) from my newly arrived DRSSTC electronic musical Tesla coil.  Tested here with a midi keyboard.  Capable of 4 foot sparks standard from this 3 foot tall coil. Just in time for the Open day. For full testing tomorrow.
There is a second one coming soon too.

Now this is trippy. I knocked this up for my Open Day last night. Fluorescein powder dropped on a 3 foot column of water and lit by a 3W UV light.  In slow motion, the green fluorescent liquid  forms inverted mushrooms, swirls, sheets and eddies constantly moving.
Sick of green? Throw in some yellow rhodamine or even a drop of (non-fluorescent) food coloring.
Mesmerising. Photos do not do it justice due to focusing difficulties with the magnifying column of water .

Now this made me go "WOW".  A 1 watt laser with a crossed diffraction pattern (or hologram). It looks like it's photoshopped on. It isn't.
Exposures are 2.5 secs. In complete darkness, it is quite disorienting.
Perhaps 2000 dots all within the legal limit.

I have a 25 kHz 4 kV supply. The sparks are quiet and stable and the space between electrodes is about 1cm. In a slight breeze they follow the ionised path and form an almost sheet like spark.
Notice also the surface effects where the spark touches the metal.

Crash course.  I got out my defibrillator for my impending Open Day. These along with resuscitation equipment are known as "crash cart" for responding to a crash in blood pressure etc. Not that I would ever need it with high voltage stuff...
Turned my back and it was gone.  Found it 30 meters away having rolled down the hill, jumped the kerb and landed in the trees.
Remarkably still works and completely undamaged once I got all the ants off it.. Yes I am a bit tachycardic still.
And that's why they're called "crash carts" in case you haven't worked it out already.

Have just done a interview for the BBC for a short bit on a program on Nikola Tesla. Done over the phone but I have done HD video and audio from here (Bunbury, Australia). I will send that to the UK and they will stitch it together with their audio.
A lot of last minute rushing around with microphones, lighting and video.
This was filmed at 1am to fit in with the end of the UK day.
It woke the dog who decided that 29 second in that a good scratch from the camera tripod was just what was needed. Well didn't want that sentence anyway.

Just an update on my laser display case, here with in the dark with labels and the beam paths drawn in.
Exiting the case are a hologram of a butterfly, and a line laser which gives interesting effects as you wave your hand through it. There is a green LED driving a Crooke's radiometer.

A Meadow Argus. This was a hand held shot on an Aster flower moving in the wind and yet you  can see down to individual scale level.
The butterfly obliged by laying its wings quite flat so I could angle it in the focal plane and catch a reasonable focus.  Even some bokeh effect of the flower in the background (always wanted to use that word).

I made up a display cabinet so I can show interesting things that are fragile or shouldn't be touched.
One half shows radioactive items and curiosities with a dozen radioactive specimens on a platter. The platter rotates to place each specimen in front of the Geiger counter and read on the laptop display.
The UV display half of the display has a 10W UV LED array and lights up various items that fluoresce under UV. It is not fully populated yet and needs to integrate a UV  Laser. It also has a few odd items, like tectites and fulgurite.
I have built the base with perforated board so I can just use self tapping screws to keep things solidly fastened from the top without leaving messy holes  when I make the inevitable changes. Like a poor man's optical table.

This big Bardy grub moth flew in to my patio attracted by my work lights. She was happy to transfer from the rafter to a finger of my left hand so I could take snaps with my right. After the shoot I put it on some wood while I changed cameras for a second session.  About an hour later she flew off. The 6 inch wingspan makes a sound like a helicopter on a quiet night. A magnificent creature.

Open Day for April 2014
My first in 4 years. This is an invitation only event at my place with perhaps 10 people from G+. I have a number restriction due to space limitations and vantage points in the different display arenas. The Physics Dept from UWA in Perth will be helping out. Preference give to those with an electrical/physics or special interest background. Or willingness and background to man one of the displays for an hour or so.
Travel time means that you would have to live in Perth (2h drive) or local around Bunbury.  I'm not sure that there are that many on G+ from that area but we'll see.  Other interest groups like the Tesla forum, science teachers and selected students, Gravity Discovery Center, Scitech, workmates and family friends make up some of the others.

Radioactive element time:
Neptunium. You probably have some in your home.
Neptunium-237 is a breakdown product of americium 241 which is found in many smoke detectors. Check yours out by opening it up as if to change the battery and you should see the radioactive warning sign.
The photo is of the americium source from a smoke detector on my Geiger counter. Since I took this picture in 2006 the 1 microcurie of americium (around 0.28 microgram) has had 1.2% decay resulting in 3.3 ng production of neptunium.
The Geiger count should have dropped from 80,180 to 79,157 CPM.
americium half life is 432.2 years and it decays into neptunium 237 with half life 2.14 million years.
Be careful, about 60kg is critically fissionable ie a bomb.

Wait a moment. There is something fishy about Tesla's famous photo of his wireless electric globe...
Why is the cuff of his right sleeve not lit up?
Answer: because it is not the light source for the photo despite what it purports to be. There was probably a magnesium flash lighting him off to the left of the photo and the globe cast a shadow. It may not have even been lit at all by a nearby running Tesla coil. Even if the globe was lit, it would have been faint compared to a flash.
So photo manipulation was alive and well even in Tesla's day.

(It pains me to post a photo that is not my own by for Nikola Tesla I make an exception - once)

The Crookes tube has vanes that turn rapidly in sunlight. Lesser lights such a 5mW green laser her also works. Also a 3 and a 40mW violet laser work well. What don't work are a 1mW red diode and 10mW red HeNe laser.
So why doesn't the stronger red laser work? (I haven't measured the power on calibrated equipment). This doesn't make sense from a heat driven action point of view. Any ideas from the physics guys. (probably a faster than speed of light issue)

Lots of photos,  a good amount of text, SEO optimisation, links etc. Sadly it still doesn't bring this 2 1/2 year saga of incompletely updated but still unpublished website any closer. I'm 2.3% Neanderthal. That explains a few things...
From The National Geographic Genographic project. You send in your DNA with a saliva swab. My results among many:

YOUR HOMINID ANCESTRY
When our ancestors first migrated out of Africa around 60,000 years ago, they were not alone. At that time, at least two other species of hominid cousins walked the Eurasian landmass: Neanderthals and Denisovans. Most non-Africans are about 2% Neanderthal. The Denisovan component of your Geno 2.0 results is more experimental, as we are still working to determine the best way to assess the percentage Denisovan ancestry you carry. The evolution of this data is another way you are actively involved in helping advance knowledge of anthropological genetics!

Spent the weekend being filmed for German RTL TV. One of many stunts, this capacitor bank explosion is good fun.
It was done after hasty repairs however.  It had failed due to exploding watermelon juice saturating the high voltage parts and had short circuited while the presenter was talking about it. It was captured on their video and the startled reaction from him will no doubt will make it to the final cut.
18 hours of filming was exhausting.  It is likely to be a 12-15 minute segment shown before the end of the year in Germany.

More dangers of Tesla coiling. This redback had taken up residence and no doubt had pushed the copper strike rail out of the way.
After a season of inactivity it was time to strip down, clean and make a few improvements to my big Tesla coil (the one above on my cover).  And of course to evict all the creatures.
There is a crew coming out from Germany to film in a couple of weeks. Sounds exhausting and I need to have my equipment in good shape - and safe.
