GMing first game in 10 years - any advice?

This Saturday I'll be GMing my first game in about a decade. I used to GM a lot, but have only just back into playing tabletop RPGs, let along running one.

To make things even tougher for me, it's a Cyberpunk 2020 game which I've converted into the White Wolf's Storyteller rules.

The upside is I like to tell stories, play with people's heads and have (albeit limited) acting skills.

So does anyone have any advice for someone returning to GMing after a long absence?

Thanks.

Help with newcomer to coding and Javascript
Creating a grid of dots

I've decided to start learning how to code, and have settled with taking my first steps with Javascript. The reason is that Javascript is used to write scripts for software I use at work, which can help speed up my workflow.

I've found that OpenTechSchool is starting free training courses in my area, so I'm trying out its intro to Javascript course: http://opentechschool.github.io/js-beginners-4h-workshop-1/page2.html

I have now started on a section about loops. You are required to write a Javascript program that'll draw a 20x20 grid of circle, using the following sandbox page: http://opentechschool.github.io/js-beginners-4h-workshop-1/sandbox/#drawing_loop.js

We're instructed to use two loops, two variables, and that loops can go inside loops.

My idea was to write two loops: one to draw a line of circles, and another to move the origin point up 10 pixels, and for both loops to cut after 19 runs.

This is the code I came up with. All it seems to do is crash its tab (I'm using Chrome for these exercises).

function drawing() {
color("red");
//counts along the horizontal to create the line of circles
var xcount = 0;
//counts vertically to stack the lines
var ycount = 0;
//counts the number of stacked lines, and increases ycount after origin moved.
while (ycount < 20) {
    moveTo(0, ycount+10);
    ycount +1;
//draws a row of 20 circles, 4 pixels in diameter)
           while (xcount < 20) {
                circle(xcount * 10, 0, 4);
                xcount = xcount + 1;
  }
}
}

I've tried various different versions of this code, but I can't get rows to appear: I can get columns or arcs made of circles, but not a grid.

Can anyone suggest where I may be going wrong?

This is the first piece of coding I've attempted in decades. The last time I did coding I used BASIC on my Acorn Electron, and I was 10 years old. ___

Brigitte Lyons – the extrovert writer of this post – gets nearly everything wrong about introverts and social anxiety.

Introverts aren't at war with extroverts: we're just starting to speak up about the problems we face in Western societies that view extroversion as "normal" and introversion as "abnormal".

Introversion or extroversion has nothing to do with social anxiety: both personality types can be affected by shyness and social anxiety. But social anxiety may afflict more introverts than extroverts in the West, due to society placing pressure on us to be extroverted (see above).

Instead of doing a second-hand attack on Susan Cain's book Quiet (http://amzn.to/1jIyYpM), Lyons should read it. That book explains, in detail, the problems introverts face in society, how we can – and have to – adapt to fit into an extroverted world, and the strengths and benefits an introverted personality type grants us introverts.

And I'd also advise anyone to not use the UK's Daily Mail as a source of information – especially regarding and science. It has less credibility and legitimacy than the National Enquirer, is more dishonest (because it pretends to be a serious, credible newspaper), and is sexist and misogynistic.

Curated list of good tech reporters.

The real tech news
Over the year I've been getting real tired of the quality of so called tech news sites. Overly sensational (and often incorrect) articles, link bait crap, biased reviews...

As a result I've stopped visiting any tech news site completely and started using Google+ as my sole source for tech news. Note that not every tech news site or article is bad, it really depends on the authors. So  I started following the good tech writers, all of which are listed below and included in the shared circle.

These guys usually hit the nail on the head and write (or record :) unbiased and decent reviews. They also point you to interesting articles not written by them and they're to first to point out bad reporting.

Google+ allows for a more two-way street in tech news reporting as it makes it easier to discuss the articles with the actual authors in an uniform way. I know that all tech news sites have comment sections, but these have really become the cesspool of the internet and are really not the same.

Bug in Google+ preferences: Pages automatically added to circles

Whenever I try to uncheck, or check, the option "Automatically add a Google+ page to my circles if I search for + followed by the page's name." in my Google+ preferences, I receive a "Preferences could not be saved. Please try again later." message pops up. (See screengrab.)

Is anyone else having this problem? This issue is specific to this option in my Google+ preferences.

I do not want pages I search for to be automatically added to my circles. I want it to remain my choice who and what I add. This smacks of Google force pages into users' circles, to make it appear they are more popular than they are to brands which advertise on Google.

A Google Translate version of a report from Swedish media: Nestlé chairman says that the world's water supply should be privatised.

So if you can't pay for water, which is essential for life, you should be left to die.

Nestlés CEO Peter Brabeck-Lethmate, just said that water should be privatized and having it is not a right. Basically - if you can't pay, don't think you have a right to survive. Well, fair enough. Lets say that "being allowed to live" is  not a human right, but lets take cash out of the equation and where does he think he stands?

Curriculum for high school filmmaking class

This curriculum for a filmmaking class from +Richard Herd is a good outline of how to approach teaching filmmaking to students.

#teaching   #school   #filmmaking

To anyone interested in teaching filmmaking to high school students, here is the curriculum a friend of mine asked for. Please offer critique and or refinement. Thanks! What follows is a copypasta from an email to a friend who requested my curriculum. Turns out, there might be other people who are interested:

I start of with some film history: persistence of vision and frame rate are psychology terms that make motion picture possible and the "industry" went through many iteration before finally getting to film. There's some youtube videos that we screen in class: (if you can't get to youtube in the 21st century, you need to raise hell about teaching a film class and needing access).

Pixar's Zoetrope
phenakistocsope Film Before Film - Phenakistoscope
zoetrope: Things - Zoetrope

chronophotographic
glass plate series: Buffalo Running 1883 Eadweard Muybridge, Very Early Film

Kinetoscope Edison Kinetoscope Films 1894-1896

black maria: Corbett and Courtney Before the Kinetograph

pathe L'HERITAGE DE LA VIEILLE FILLE [école Ferdinand Zecca] (Film Pathé Frères, France 1910)

Then we talk about how the first stories started. Guys were running around with cameras taking pictures of everything and screening it anywhere. This video Auguste er Louis Lumière: L'arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat (1896) caused people to hide under their chairs and rush out of the screening room. And that's what sparked the idea: We can use cinema to create emotions in people. Here's the first narrative that was any good: A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune 1902 - English narration) it was only 12 minutes long because that was one reel of film. Here's some other good ones:

These were both huge commercial success, hard to realize they are over 100 years old:

The great train robbery: The Great Train Robbery - 1903 Silent Film

Making a living: MAKING A LIVING (Chaplin short films)

I'm always asking: What's missing from these films? Obvious answers are color and good acting. But also the music is not synced. They paid a performer to noodle and improv to the picture, live. Also the actual answer I'm looking for is "Director's Coverage." Wide Shot, Medium Shot, Close Up. Then we take a very quick tour through film history using trailers of the big movies:
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Trailer
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA(1962) Original Theatrical Trailer
Ben-Hur - Trailer [1959] [32nd Oscar Best Picture]
Schindler's List (1993) Official Trailer
MOVIE TRAILER -- "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939)
Spartacus - Official Trailer [1960]
Titanic - Official Trailer [1997]
All Quiet on the Western Front Official Trailer #1 - Lew Ayres Movie (1930) HD
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Official Trailer
Reds - Official Trailer [1981]
The Ten Commandments (1956) Trailer

Then we start the FIRST assignment.

Assignments/Projects:
1. Pass the Salt (a meaningless dialogue bit that everyone must perform.) It's designed to do many things at once: show director's coverage, wherein the scene is shot from 6 angles (Wide Shot, Medium Shot, Close Up of actor 1, Close Up of actor 2, Over the Shoulder of Actor 1, Over the shoulder of actor 2). Then because the scene is meaningless, it is an actor's study on subtext, where the meaning comes from "HOW" something is said and not from the words. Additionally, I am right there next to the person shooting, so they know EXACTLY how to operate the camera and how to film proper coverage. Then we transfer footage and start editing.

2. Beat Sheet: first we watch Trollhunter, and after the film we fill out the beat sheet as a class. Then we watch Limitless, and the students fill out the beat sheet as a quiz. I don't care if they work in groups (because soon they will have to work in groups to get their projects shot and edited). Last, everyone has to write their own beat sheet and film it here on campus (within rules that have already been covered). Then they have to edit.

3. Notes on story timeline: we watch "Double Indemnity" (1944), and the students then fill out the Gist and Timeline according to the film and turn it in for a grade. Then we read the first 15 pages of the script. Then everyone has to write their own story and turn in a GIST, TIMELINE, SCRIPT, yet we only film 1 or 2 depending on the size of the class, because the story requires 5 actors. My second period only has 5 kids in it, so we shot 1. My third period has 12 so we shot 2. They get graded for filming and editing. The person who takes the lead in the group gets the highest grade; the person who does a little bit gets the lowest grade.

4. The final project is the Prisoner's Dilemma. They have 1 week. Everyone has to write, film, edit.

Some notes on project tracking: I write columns on the board:

GIST | TIMELINE | SCRIPT

And we go around the room and I get them to write their name where they are to track how their projects are coming along.

I also use: WRITE | FILM | EDIT | DONE

so they can see where they are supposed to be.___Curriculum for high school filmmaking class

Can you spare a short film script for a high school English class?

In a few weeks, I'll be teaching a screenwriting workshop to a class of 13-16 year olds.

I'm looking for short film scripts to use as teaching examples in the class.

I'd like to use scripts from a few different writers to show the pupils how different writers approach screenwriting, within the constraints of the format.

If you have a short film script you'd be willing to share, please let me know.

I ideally need scripts under 5 pages with a standard narrative structure. The content must be suitable for 13-16 year olds (no sex, swearing, extreme violence etc).

The scripts would not be distributed outside of the class. They'll be used to show the pupils how short film scripts work, before they move on to writing their own.

Speedreading like The Flash

Because I've got a massive number of books to read, I bought a "teach yourself" book on speedreading.

According to it most people read at 200 words-per-minute, and speedreading doubles or trebles that rate.

I did a reading speed test and it turns out I read at 400wpm.

I think this is what inside my head will sound like if I manage to treble my reading speed.

2. What are the sources of all of this information?
3. Please could someone make one for the UK?

If enough people watched and actually thought about this video on Wealth Inequality in America, there would probably be riots in the streets.___My thoughts on this:

Keep Calm and Rape Me
This one is renamed "Keep Calm And Rape It" in the Amazon.co.uk product description, for added misogynism.

You can see the T-shirts for sale on Amazon here http://t.co/KYCNhPAbO7 and  on Solid Gold Bomb's website here: http://bit.ly/Z7Qybw.

This is the best anti-bullying film I've seen. Moving and positive, it shows the emotional impact of being a bully.

Thanks.

Binging on Stargate Universe

I've spent the day watching episodes of a series I've long meant to watch: Stargate Universe, and it's left me with a couple of thoughts:

1. Grim is not entertaining
SGU strongly reminds me of Ronald D Moore Battlestar Galactica remake.

Both feature a broken down ship in space, which is stranded by accident, and becomes populated by a motley crew of people. And its well-written, well-acted, high production values – generally very well made.

And both have episodes with nearly identical concepts: the ship loosing all of their water, struggling to find food enough to feed everyone, a developing split between the civilian and military crews, and a commander trying to prevent mutiny created through politicians' machinations.

And both have episodes with nearly identical concepts: the ship loosing all of their water, struggling to find food enough to feed everyone, a developing split between the civilian and military crews, and a commander trying to prevent mutiny created through politicians' machinations.

And both shows have a lunatic genius scientist doctor.

What I'm mainly finding about SGU is that it's grim. Extremely grim. There are few laughs and – 12 episodes in – absolutely no sense of hope.

Basically Stargate: Universe is Moore's _Battlestar Galactica_… without the laughs.

2. Elyse Levesque didn't have a character
I have a feeling that SGU's directors, writers and showrunners told Levesque (http://imdb.to/12ebcaF) – Chloe Armstrong –  to "Just be pretty, vulnerable, appealing while making sad puppy dog eyes." And that's it.

Armstrong is relegated to being a girlfriend of the one of the heroic males, and the occasional victim of Bad Things, leading to her having to be rescued by the heroic males.

The other women on the show were given jobs and roles on the ship, their own story arcs, and goals and conflicts for their character. But Armstrong was given changes of clothes. Presumably because, being female, that is preferably to being given a character to play.

3. The pitch was: "We're going to make Battlestar Galactica in the Stargate setting…
"…and take out everything that defines the Stargate franchise, and take out everything that made BSG enjoyable."

4. Does Robert Carlisle play sane people?
I've seen Carlisle in a few things. And each time he played a nutcase.

While he plays nutcases well, it'd be nice to see him try something different.
