Sahara desert, Morocco.

I was delighted to find a small family group of Desert Sparrows living at a tiny Berber camp in the middle of nowhere. They had proved very difficult to find on previous visits to north Africa. I crawled around the tents and mud huts for close-ups and couldn't believe my luck when this male hopped onto this old teapot and posed for a single image.

It's so much fun to photograph subjects that are not shy.
This laughing gull was so curious that he came so close to me that right after this set of photos he was to close for me to focus on him. These kind of interactions with nature are what keeps me going.

Wildlife is what gets my heart racing. Photographing a wild creature in their habitat is the most exhilarating photographic experience I know of. Well, I'm still frustrated with the changes in how photos are uploaded and shared here on the new G+, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have Wildlife Wednesday. Share your photos of the wild and free-roaming critters you've encountered with the theme by tagging #WildlifeWednesday in your posts. Tagging the curators (+Mike Spinak and myself) is optional, but it does help us pick up on your posts easily and it makes us smile.

Sorry, this is one day late

This is a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron belonging to the colony of night herons that settled on the island inside the South Pond (now transformed into a Nature Boardwalk) in Chicago's Lincoln Park.

You can see the nests and the adults perched on the trees on the island as well as in neighboring trees outside. It is amazing that these herons have settled in the middle of the city!

I spent about an hour at a small wetland area in Bozeman, MT last Saturday. It was good to see a lot of people out walking the trails and taking in the birds and nice weather. At one point I got asked if I knew the name of the yellow headed blackbird. Uhhhhh, yeah, that would be "yellow-headed blackbird" I said with a grin. They laughed and replied "we nailed that one, eh?"

I noticed this little one squawking for mom, I guess it was hungry. I wish the two reeds were not framing it but I couldn't move around it so I am stuck with them. Cute little guy, but the beak makes it look unhappy!

Western Bluebird, Sialia mexicana; Stanford University, California

A couple of months ago, Marilou Aballe posted her first Eastern Bluebird of the season, and I remember thinking that, although we have bluebirds here, I rarely see them -- unfortunately, since they're among our most colorful. And then, a couple weeks later, I went on a walk in the hills behind Stanford, and ... Bluebirds! I went back a bit later, and found this very cooperative model who let me take lots of shots. So this must be Marilou's doing...
