ARIZONA CACTI – BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM
The other day, while visiting here in Arizona, I went looking for sprinvg flowers hoping to catch some blooming cacti.  Unfortunately I seem to be here a bit early and there was little to shoot.  Luckily I was able to visit the Boce Thompson Arboretum East of Phoenix.  The property is well kept and somewhat manicured (for a desert).  Cacti and palms and flowering plants from here and abroad.  I'm sure it's quite a sight in another few weeks.  Even so, there was plenty to point one's camera at.  It was the middle of the day, so getting good even light was a bit of a chore.  Luckily I had my parents there to play assistant with my reflectors and diffuses so I was able to get a few decent photos.

Denver Orchid Society:  Today I went to see an Orchid show.  Pretty cool stuff.  It was kind of difficult to photograph as I could only use my speedlight and a reflector due to all the folks walking about.

Anyway,, I manage to grab a few good shots.  I focsed on getting in close to show the unique character of the Orchids "inner flower" (no idea what that's actually called).

Hanging Lake - Frozen Waterfalls

Last week I took one of my tour clients up to Hanging Lakes in Glenwood Canyon.  In the summer this unique lake and waterfalls is abnormally lush with green and flowers.  A real treat within the arid canyons of the area.  In the winter it turns into a surreal wall of frozen drizzled icecycles.  Very cool.

Kenny Chesney Digs on my Photograph

So check it out.  Earlier this month I was contacted by Kenny Chesney's promoter. They wished to purchase one of my images of Red Rocks to commemorate Kenny's three night sellout a couple years ago.  It seems that someone forwarded this image to Mr. Chesney and he loved it. So they are going to present it to him as a gift.

The contact made mention of it being a wall hanging. In his house? I don't know… that would be cool.

I hope Mr. Chesney enjoys his photo.  I'm quite pleased he likes my work.

Sheep in Heat
It's that time of year again. Love is in the air. While most of nature seems to get it's viagra boost in the Springtime, Colorado's big horn sheep are feeling the heat in the chill of late Autumn.

Today Kevin and I headed up near the Georgetown area to see if we could photograph some Big Horns.  We found three groups in different locations.  I did a bit of hoofing it myself around the cliffside to get some pictures that were not just looking up at them.  My fingers were crossed that a big Billy would not take offense to me being on his turf.  I don't think I'd have much chance eluding one of these guys on the side of a rock wall.

I was hoping to see some of the males butting heads, but it did not happen.  These two in the first photo tapped snout a few times,, but no actual hitting.  Maybe they've already done there fighting forharems... more »

Denver Nights

spent a few hours walking downtown Denver last night for one of my Denver Night Photography Tours (http://www.bigsunphototours.com/colorado/denver-lights.htm).  For some reason many of the buildings were not turning on their lights leaving the buildings dark.   I don't know what the reasoning was...  However there were still some good shots to capture.

The City / County Building was completely sans lights except for the tower at the top of the building, which actually made for a very cool surreal looking photograph.

Huge Bull Moose Encounter

Today while teaching a camera class near Indian Peaks (at Long Lake) a HUGE moose came out of the brush about 40 ft from us…
I was freaking out trying to get my camera settings for the shot (since they were all set for slow shutter landscape shot)_……
By the time I got things right,,  the moose had walked right into the water in front of us (about 20 ft)…  If he had not liked us there we would have been dead…. He was HUGE.
Probably 7 ft. tall at his head (not the antlers,, the head), definitely taller than me and I'm 6 ft.

Finally was able to capture one lousy shot that was in focus before he wandered across the water away from me…  I shot tons more photos,, but the light was totally wrong ,, he was in the shadows facing away from me most of the time.  I managed one more shot that is not horrible, though he'sstill facing away... more »

My Photo of the Month
Bull Elk

I like this photograph so much it might even make photo of the year (but that remains to be seen).

While leading a photography tour in Rocky Mountain National Park this week, I came across the ubiquitous herd of doe Elk on the side of the road. Just as we approached, a huge Bull Elk disappeared into the woods.  While everyone stood roadside watching the ladies, I entered the woods with camera in hand to go look for Papa Elk.  After about ten minutes I found him in the thick near a stream.  I carefully followed him for a ways.  He would run off, then I'd creep back close to him, get some shots and then he would move on.

I later grabbed my tour client.  We then went back into the woods circling behind where I figured he had gone.  We eventually found him again and were both able to capture some amazing photographs.

Young Thai Monk
New Distressed Art Piece

Hey folks,,, been a long time since I've put out any new textured photography (which I'm not refering to as "Distressed Art")…  I don't love that name,,, but I can't seem to think of a good one.  If you have any suggestions, by all means please let me hear your ideas.  Anyway.  This piece is a blend of about a dozen images.  The monk himself was shot in Thailand.  All the rest of the images in this photo came from Vietnam.  Look real close and see if you can find other images in the artwork that are not so obvious.  It's like "Find Waldo".

As always you can view this artwork in it's entirety on my gallery.  Museum quality prints are available as well.

Broncos Training Day - Dove Vallery

Today I went to Dove Valley to watch the Broncos practice.
It was cool. Got to see Peyton Manning up close in action.

Sadly they don't let you bring "real" camera equipment in so I was relegated to my little pocket camera with no zoom and horrible resolution (so I can't crop in either).  Such a shame as there were many great photo opps.

Still, it's fun to snap some photos of the practice.

Hanging Lake Colorado

I just added a new location to my list of available photography tour destinations here in Colorado.  "Hanging Lake".  It's amazing!

Hands down it is the most "lush" location that I know of in Colorado.  It's like a small rain forest eco-system trapped in the Rocky Mountains. This emerald green lake is bordered with a long line of waterfalls.  The cliff walls are adorned with moss, ferns, flowers and greenery of all types.  Seriously, this is not the normal dry Colorado environment we're used to.

Flowers and Goats (part II)

Another trip up to Mount Evans produced some more really nice wild flower photography and Mountain Goats.

There is probably no more than a week or two left of decent flower photos left  to shoot up at Mount Evans this year.  In fact it's the last place with "attractive" flowers anywhere here in central Colorado.  Everywhere else I've gone the flowers are either already gone or well past their prime, leaving you only wilted petals and drag colors.

This years extremely early spring, hot weather and lack of rain has pretty much leveled this years flower photography.  You have to get up near 12-13,000 feet to still find flowers in their prime.

If you are still interested in taking a flower photography tour you'll want to try and get it done thiswee... more »

DSLR Buyers Guide
what you need to know and why

I get a lot of folks asking me "what camera should I buy? I want a new DSLR".  Unfortunately this is not a cut 'n dry recommendation.  Everyone has different needs, different preferences and of course different budgets.

So instead of giving a bland blanket answer that doesn't help them too much, I've put together a relatively comprehensive article with all the major stats and features that most DSLR camera buyers should think about, (and some that they should avoid wasting time thinking about).  More than that however, I explain why each of these features is important (or unimportant) when seeking out your first DSLR.

I hope you find it useful, and if so, please pass the link around the Google+ sphere.

Portrait Workshop
Denver - June 30th

Whether or not portraits is the direction you wish to go with your photography, skills in portraiture are a "must have". Why? Because friends and family are always going to be asking you to take their photos. Often this is the stepping stone to paying gigs and future opportunities. Maybe you're into photographing weddings,,, or bands,,, or even animals. Well, they all require you to master your portrait skills to be successful.

Good news! Big Sun Photography has teamed up with John Wakefield, a lifetime portrait professional who was once commissioned to photograph Ronald Reagan. Together we will be providing several portrait workshops here in the Denver area. The workshops will be out of doors and will focus on using the natural environment and lighting to produce beautiful photographs of people.

Guanella Pass Colorado
New Spring Photos

Finally, after about a year or so of being closed most of the time… Guanella Pass has opened up again. This is great news. Well, particularly for me since it opens up a whole lot of great territory for my tours, but also as it's just a wonderful place to waste a day driving through the mountains. I went out yesterday for just such a drive and managed to capture a few sweet photographs. Here are my favorites from the day.

Macro Photography
a day of flowers and bugs in Colorado

Hooray! My new Macro lens arrived this week and I finally had a chance to give it a proper testing. The lens is a Tonkina 100mm 2.8 Macro. For the most part I'm quite pleased with it's performance. The manual focus is very easy to work with and easily jumps from manual to auto focus with a push/pull of the focus lens focus ring. Unless you are using the lens for purposes other than macro (for example as a portrait lens), you will not be worrying about auto focus to begin with as auto focus in Macro simply gives up too much control (plus it spends way too much time searching). Sadly this Tonkina lens has no vibration reduction system. This would have been useful as I was forced to push my ISO higher than what I would have preferred in an effort to deal with camera shake caused by the shutter (even with the... more »

Solar Eclipse
I had no special filters (for my lens nor my eyes),, so I pretty much was wasting my time hiking up the mountain to photograph the solar eclipse last week.

But luck was on my side. For about 30 seconds the clouds were just the right thickness to act as a natural filter over the sun allowing me to look where I was shooting (sort of,, still damn bright), and click off a few frames without torching my sensor (I hope).

The other two photos were taken from the same location. They are not eclipses, but they're kinda fun.

* Tattered Curtains*

Hey folks,, would like some help picking between these two. I need to add only one to my portfolio, but can't decide which works best.

To me the closer one is more focused on the curtains, while the further one better makes the point of the broken down house... Comments?
