An Olympic Full Moon

On August 3rd, 2012 a full moon graced the London skies. Reuters photographer Luke MacGregor took this incredible shot of the moon rising through the Olympic Rings hanging beneath the Tower Bridge.

This was one of eight captures Luke took of this picture-perfect moment, you can see the rest here.

The image was posted to the Reuters Olympics Facebook page yesterday. They page has been doing a fantastic job of providing key Olympic updates along with sharing incredible photos like the one above.

LEGO Escher Recreations: Relativity

Built by Andrew Lipson and Daniel Shiu. No software or camera tricks, but some very fiddly construction: the picture has to be taken from exactly the right place. The whole thing took five or six evenings spread over two or three weeks. Most of the last evening was taken up with setting up the lighting the way they wanted it and trying to get the camera position just right...

The original Escher picture (Relativity, 1953. Lithograph) is shown here: http://goo.gl/JlhMu.

Unlike many of Escher's other "impossible" pictures (like "Ascending and Descending") , there is actually no optical illusion involved here. Gravity seems to be working in three different directions simultaneously, but the picture shows a perfectly self-consistent physical scene. So modelling it should certainly be feasible. But while... more »

Back off, I know Kung-Fu!

Grizzly bear cubs have to be some of the cutest animals on earth, especially spring cubs!

These two were as cute as any stuffed teddy bear, except these cubs never stopped playing, fighting and wrestling.  The were very entertaining to watch.

These were two cubs from a liter of three, the other cub was out of the picture along with the sow.

Back-Off Buddy!
Knob-tailed gecko in a defensive posture

Don't you find this gecko beautiful and very expressive?

Nephrurus levis occidentalis is a genus of eleven species of gecko, commonly known as knob-tailed geckos.

They are easily distinguished by their short bodies, large heads, small legs and short, carrot-shaped tails that often end in a small knob.

1-year-old baby beluga in the Shedd Aquarium

I love this picture of Shedd Aquarium's baby Beluga calf, Nunavik, when he turned one year old!

A healthy, happy and playful little tyke of 450 lbs., it's hard to believe that Nunavik almost did not survive his first day. Complications with the birth were overcome by Shedd's outstanding veterinary staff. Today Nunavik loves nothing more than mimicing the antics of mom, Puiji, and enrichment time with Shedd aquarists.

See Nunavik's newborn photos here: http://goo.gl/NsTZL and check-out Shedd's Facebook page: http://goo.gl/zsO8R for many more baby beluga pictures and ongoing updates.

Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad

The Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad (Atelopus varius), also known as the clown frog, is a neo-tropical true toad from the family Bufonidae (Crump 1986).

Once ranging from Costa Rica to Panama, Atelopus varius is now listed as critically endangered and has been reduced to a single remnant population near Quepos, Costa Rica (rediscovered in 2003) and is presumed to be extinct in Panama.

Recent variation in air temperature, precipitation, stream flow patterns, and the subsequent spread of a pathogenic chytrid fungus linked to global climate change have been the leading cause of decline for Atelopus varius

What’s a Mola? Behind the Strange Fish Picture Surging on Social Networks

The remarkable ability of Internet users to make a post go viral has produced a new treat: an enchanting picture of a Mola mola, or ocean sunfish, undulating just below the surface of the ocean. The image, snapped by photographer Daniel Botelho in 2010, is now making waves around Social Networks.

The sunfish is the world’s heaviest bony fish. It’s in the same order as puffer fish and porcupine fish, but it’s one of the most evolutionary derived fishes in the sea. So, it has a cranium more like what ours looks like, along with fewer vertebrae; its spinal column is actually shorter than its brain. And they’re one of the most fecund vertebrates in the world; a 4-ft female was recorded as having an estimated 300 million eggs.

The only way to understand [the sunfish] is to study itsancestry. T... more »

Refractions in Space

In this amazing shot we see an air bubble, inside a drop of water, suspended in space. Pretty much any photo shot in ‘zero gravity’ is cool by default, but when you incorporate a refraction (where an image reverses as it passes through another medium) into the mix, the results are guaranteed to please. Since the air bubble is a different medium from the water surrounding it, that is why we see the image flipped an additional time.

Chinstrap Penguins

Much of the southern part of the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, home for these Chinstraps, is permanent ice - the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. The remainder of the ice shelves which used to extend roughly 3900 square miles over the Weddell Sea had completely disappeared by 2002. Global warming is changing the habitat for all Ice dwelling inhabitants.

Playing with Perspective

In this fun exploration with perspective we see the subject standing perilously atop a tiny ledge looking down.

The angle and lens make for a creative capture before you quickly realize the subject is just lying down on a sidewalk ‘pretending’ to look down. What’s equally fun is trying to imagine the position of photographer Christopher Hassler getting this shot. Fun stuff!

The Ice Cave Experience

Deep, blue and cold. The frightening experience of climbing inside an ice cave on the north face of alpine summit at 3800 m above sea level is very difficult to describe in words. Especially in summer, when all the glacial ice melts making the place for completely new formations. You need to stay focused, pay attention to every single move and commit yourself entirely to this climb. The reward?! An amazing experience of climbing something pure and truly unique.

BASE Jumping from Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro

In this heart-stopping photograph, we see Austrian athlete Felix Baumgartner atop the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro,

In December 1999, Felix Baumgartner jumped from the right arm of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, setting the world record for lowest BASE jump, to the world’s collective amazement. The same year he claimed the world record for highest BASE jump when he leapt from the top of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Baumgartner served in the Austrian military, where he learned parachuting skills, including training that would allow him to accurately hit tiny drop zones.

Stunning Kingfisher Dives Underwater To Catch Fish

Kingfishers inhabit slow-moving, shallow rivers or streams which are clean enough to support abundant small fish. Fast-moving streams and polluted waters do not contain enough available fish, and hence do not contain kingfishers. Branches overhanging shallows make essential fishing perches.

Kingfishers eat mainly fish, chiefly minnows and sticklebacks, but they also take aquatic insects, freshwater shrimps and tadpoles etc to top up their diet. They prefer fish about 23 mm in length, but can handle anything up to 80mm long.

An ideal fishing spot is a firm perch overlooking a clear, shallow pool of water. Once the bird has located a suitable prey and assessed its depth, it dives. At the entry into water, its beak is opened and its eyes closed by the third eyelid. The bird is effectively blindfolded as it catches the... more »

Vampire star and its victim

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) astronomers has shown that most very bright high-mass stars, which drive the evolution of galaxies, do not live alone. Many of such binaries transfer mass from one star to another, a kind of stellar vampirism depicted in this artist’s impression.

Almost three quarters of these stars are found to have a close companion star, far more than previously thought.

Surprisingly most of these pairs are also experiencing disruptive interactions, such as mass transfer from one star to the other, and about one third are even expected to ultimately merge to form a single star. The results are published in the 27 July 2012 issue of the journal Science.

The Universe is a diverse place, and many stars are quite unlike the Sun. An international team has used the VLT to study what are known as O-typesta... more »

Artistic Chalk Explosions

In this series, Ukrainian photographer Anton Surkov creates a collection of perfectly timed black and white photographs. In the images, Surkov captures each unique jump, as clouds of white powder explode in the air around the remarkably fit, strong young models.

The photographs exude a sense of energy, and the models demonstrate all kinds of emotion in their dramatic gestures and intense facial expressions. Surkov has mastered extreme lighting patterns that reveal the details of each powerful body as it is consumed by bursts of chalky dust.

Tilt-Shift Aerial of New York

In this incredible aerial photograph by Tim Sklyarov we get a real sense of just how many tall buildings there are in New York City, especially in Manhattan. You can also see how big a footprint Central Park occupies on the island.

Tim took an incredible series of tilt-shift aerials of New York City, head over to his personal website to see the entire gallery.

I can never wait for my cup of tea :) Grohe Red – boiling hot water faucet

I don't know how much it costs but I want one!!!

With Grohe Red, you can draw filtered 99 ºC hot water, for a nice cup of tea or coffee, directly from the tap without having to wait. ~ Grohe

Amazing half-animal, half-plant! Meet Elysia Chlorotica!

The Elysia Chlorotica sea slug is not like most sea slugs.  Scientists refer to this animal as being "solar-powered," since it undergoes many plant-like processes and resembles a leaf!  This creature has chloroplasts that allow it to convert sunlight into energy, so yes, it undergoes photosynthesis.

The Elysia Chlorotica sea slug, unlike some of the more exotic animals we see here on Greenamajigger, can be found close to home!  By close, I mean the east coast of the United States.

Feeding on algae, this animal has a weird way of sustaining life.  It needs to eat plants to maintain its existence, but the only thing that it takes from what it eats are chloroplasts, which help it undergo photosynthesis more easily!  So, is the elysia chlorotica a plant?  Yes. Is it an animal? Yes. Mind Blown!... more »

The Lion’s Mane Jellyfish

In this photograph we see a popular subject of Alexander’s photographs, Cyanea capilata, commonly known as the Lion’s mane jellyfish. It is the largest known species of jellyfish and can be found in the cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic and northern Pacific.

Wikipedia: Although capable of attaining a bell diameter of 2.5 metres (8.2 ft), these jellyfish can vary greatly in size. Those found in lower latitudes are much smaller than their far northern counterparts with bells about 50 centimetres (20 in) in diameter. The tentacles of larger specimens may trail as long as 30 metres (98 ft) or more. These extremely sticky tentacles are grouped into eight clusters, each cluster containing over 100 tentacles, arranged in a series of rows.

Volcanic

Volcanic images at National Geographic are always about lightning, lava and immense cones, but a volcano can also be spewing out mud, allowing you to bathe in them! This volcano is approximately 50 feet high and can accommodate 10 to 15 people in its active crater. It takes a bit to jump in, what if the pressure goes away?

Loving Life and Living Forever Young

Mexico-based photographer Joel Sossa visually expands on themes of loving life and living forever young. While the carefree escapades of the young can't be contained in a bottle, a version of it can live forever in photographs. His mix of lazy summer days and sun-kissed adventures further enhance a sense of youth and freedom in the outdoors.

Fly By

This photo was taken on the ice near Arctic Bay last month. It is the highest latitude passenger flight on a hot air balloon ever. It was quite the sight to see a hot air balloon fly between the iceberg columns (it is one iceberg but looks like two).

The breathtaking moment amateur photographer captures a lightning bolt during spectacular Fourth of July fireworks

The Fourth of July fireworks have long burned out in the sky, but one amateur photographer was fortunate enough to capture the shot of a lifetime with a little help from Mother Nature.

Standing on a pedestrian walkway on the Mid-Hudson Bridge overlooking the Hudson River, Michael Pescetti caught a glorious burst of fireworks in the exact moment when a bolt of lightning sliced the night sky in half, making for one breath-taking photo.

The image, which looks almost unreal in its perfection, shows the golden-red fireworks bloom in a dark sky with the fiery lighting bolt in the background coming down from a storm cloud as the Hudson River below glows in reds, golds and oranges.

The once-in-a-lifetime shot attracted much attention to Pescetti and... more »

Wine Stain Portraits

Harnas has spent the last few months perfecting the technique and now has some two dozen works on display. Via her website:

A portrait artist at heart, I am particularly intrigued by the challenge of trying to control the unpredictable nature of wine bleeding through fabric in order to channel the equally imprecise nature of a person’s character. In addition, the sacred aspect of wine lends itself to religious iconography, reminding many of the Shroud of Turin: one who drinks wine may come to feel a certain level of saintliness sipping on this liquid form of divinity. So, this is a form of consecration.

NEW UPDATE - For a look at our entire hike, please check it out on my blog!: http://dallasnagatawhite.com/2012/07/lava-hike/

UPDATE! - How this image was made: https://plus.google.com/107834920597728149617/posts/atkvreZvG61

Once we reached the lava, we were greeted by a passing raincloud, so +Ed White and I made the best of it. ;)

I framed the shot and pre-focused the lens, instructed one of our friends to press the shutter while another friend held the speedlite behind us. We took a couple photos just standing before my husband said, "Just one more!" and dipped me with a kiss.

Fantastic and Surreal Creature: Blobfish

This gelatinous deep water fish has a face that only those who truly admire Nature’s boundless creativity will appreciate.

Found in the oceans surrounding Australia and Tasmania, the blobfish leads a rather passive life, feeding on whatever piece of detritus floats within its reach. It lacks the muscular power of other fish and practically doesn’t spend any energy while swimming thanks to its body being less dense than water.

Find more information about the Blobfish on Wikipedia ~ http://goo.gl/i4r6U
