What is that..? Could it be..?

Yes, it's a DeLorean. Back from 1981/82. Hardly the future is it?

This is one of, probably around 6,000 still in existence, of the DMC-12s that were made famous by the DeLorean company's very public liquidation movie, Back To The Future.

Fun Quiz...

Business setting...

Person A is talking to person B about company business. You know the sort of thing, asking questions, setting priorities, planning stuff, etc. After a minute or two, person C approaches and just butts right in...

1. What is a word or expression that describes that action?

2. Under what circumstances is it acceptable to do that?

3. Is it okay to punch that person in the face?

"I keep giving you opportunities to succeed"..?

You may have heard these words before, or you may hear them one day. The big question is, what do they mean? Whatever the answer, I'm sure there isn't a good one. As far as I can tell, it means one of two things...

1. You're a big fat failure, and you'll never amount to anything.

2. I'm testing you, ready to pounce when you don't get it right.

Perhaps I'm missing a vital point here. I don't want to get off on the wrong foot. I want to be 100% sure what is being said. But I'm pretty sure it's negative. Maybe even passive aggressive.

Who can tell me which, what, or why?

Conspiracy..?!! What conspiracy?

Yeah, people (strange people mostly) like to make big things of imaginary spaceflight, and all the chemicals the government drop on us from airplanes, all of the time...

But if you want a real conspiracy that's happening at your local supermarket... ask yourself this: why do all the household cleaning product manufacturers suddenly have products that require replaceable consumables in order to function? Put another way, stuff that needs extra stuff (that costs real money). How? Why? It's a plot if ever there was one.

We're all doomed I tell you. Scrubbing Bubbles can't save you this time!!!

My offspring received an HP TouchSmart PC with Windows 8 for Christmas...

It doesn't really need a keyboard, and everything is possible using the on-screen facsimile of same. I'm thinking, though, that we may need to get a supplemental keyboard just in case it freezes. I mean, it is Windows after all...

Ask and they shall answer...

Paraphrasing Field Of Dreams there, but so what.

I am wondering of there is such a thing as a USB IR emitter that could be used with the Raspberry Pi. I Googled and got lots of not-very-useful stuff... and I'm feeling lazy...

The application would be to control household electronics, especially of the televisual variety. Am I planning to build a remote control for my "telly", you wonder? Of course not! That would be so passé. I have a much more evil plan in the works.

Google+... the perfect place to complain about stuff!

Up this week: Amazon. Ugh!

So... I ordered a book from Amazon last week (Thursday, to be precise). I paid for 2-day delivery, so I would have expected it by Tuesday, right? I know that Christmas (or some other religious festivity) is upon us, so maybe there would be a delay in shipping.

Fast-forward to Saturday. I get an email from Amazon joyfully asking, "What did you think of... blah blah blah." Yeah, great... it's a book... that I don't have yet... how long are you giving me to assess it? -4 days?

But, anyway, I happily stride out to the mailbox on Tuesday, just a little bit hopeful that the Amazon elves, and the UPS pixies have done their best. No package. No book. Boo fricking hoo, right?

I tried again last night. Nope. Not a chance. So, I decide to check out the... more »

Plus, the writer gets extra credit for not bringing up "Global Warming". We all know that is just a massive hoax designed to, um, make everyone panic and bring about the New World Order... or is it the other way around? I guess it depends upon which "conspiracy" you subscribe to.

Ext JS 4.2 Beta is out today!

"With Ext JS 4.2 we now have much improved IE 10 support. The introduction of IE10 brings an entirely new challenge to consider in your applications, however: 2 quirks modes! That’s right. All other browsers to date have a strict mode and a quirks mode (the mode you get with no DOCTYPE specified). With IE10, strict mode is enabled as you would expect: when you specify the DOCTYPE. What is a surprise is that when you do not specify a DOCTYPE, the new “interoperable quirks” mode is enabled."

Heh... Stack Overflow... Funnn!

I'm skulking around Stack Overflow at the moment, having had a busy night reading the Qt docs and implementing some tests. I'm cracking up over the number of, "I don't have a clue what I'm doing -- Please write my application for me," posts. Sure, most of the issues are hard nuts to crack, and I can see and feel the frustration. But, seriously, if you come on there with a, "Please help me write this function," or, "I need a SQL query to count the number of rows containing 'banana'," type question, expect the wrath of the Gods of the Stack!!! :)

Which brings me to... what's the lamest/silliest question you've seen on Stack Overflow, and did you bombard the OP with downvotes and many haughty comments?

13 Things You May Know About Cats...

➤ Nose-to-nose greetings between cats are unusual, as it puts both in a vulnerable position. However, cats who know each other well but have been apart for a while feel safe enough to do this to confirm visual recognition and gain information about how the other cat is, where he has been and what he has been doing.

➤ Purring usually indicates contentment, however, a deep purr can also indicate pain. If you know your cat well you will be able to tell the difference in his demeanor.

➤ Cats start to purr at one week old and can do so continually as they inhale and exhale.

➤ Young cats purr in a monotone, while older ones do so in two to three resonant notes.

➤ Cats appear to retain their kitten vocal signals to communicate with their owners, but they use adult vocals with other cats.

Git and GitHub -- Why So Popular?!!

There's an interesting conversation that sometimes crops up between developers. Git and GitHub have exploded in popularity in just a couple of years. Previously, there was a large install of Subversion users and everywhere I went that was deployed and being used (not always happily). But Subversion wasn't the only game in town. Mercurial came along, and I almost got to use it while working for one company, but they went down the Subversion route (again).

But at some point Git suddenly became super popular and the number of Git submitters literally exploded.

Git is everywhere. It's now the only source control product I ever hear about. So what happened in your opinion to make it so darned popular? I have some theories of my own, but I won't spill until I hear what others have to say.

El Camino del Ray. A video to make your palms sweat..!

Watch this video all the way through... and ask yourself if you would complete the journey! Well? Would you?!!

El Caminito del Rey ("The King's little pathway") is a walkway, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Álora in the province of Málaga, Spain.

The walkway is one meter wide, and rises over 100 meters (350 feet) above the river below. Constructed of concrete resting on steel rails supported by stanchions at around 45 degrees into the rock face, it is currently in a highly deteriorated state and there are numerous sections where part or all of the concrete top has collapsed. The result is large open air gaps that are bridged only by narrow steel beams or other support fixtures. Very few of the original handrails exist but as... more »

More "Spolsky is/was wrong" fodder...

This is mostly historical. It's a blog entry from June 2004 that was later published in Joel Spolsky's book, Joel On Software.

I don't intend this to be critical in any way (well, maybe just a teensy bit). Certainly, in 2004, all the statements below were absolutely (mostly) true. Developers of one kind or another were apt to attempt a recreation of the Windows desktop in a browser. I don't know that anyone ever succeeded to any degree, but it was certainly fraught with issues. As someone at the time point pointed out, it also served no real purpose.

Where Spolsky is perhaps a little short-sighted is his insistence that native Windows software is not something that would be duplicated successfully online. It's what I like to call his "Microsoft is God" complex, where he simultaneously... more »

This is a shameless promotion for the Helping Others page...

It's an awesome initiative that's been started by +Sean Cowen, and since it's almost the Season of Goodwill, it couldn't be a more perfect time to get involved. Helping out doesn't mean a huge commitment, just spreading the word and doing anything else that you can.

Please +1 and Circle the page: +Helping Others

It's a great place to visit...

...But I wouldn't want to live there!

Yorkshire, land of my birth.
