Look Up; It's Siena!... Siena, Italy
Visiting Siena was a dream come true.
Receiving traffic tickets almost a year later - not so dreamy.
Apparently I was speeding...? I think that's what happened, though it's really not clear.

I am clear that we were charged almost $200 to the rental car company for them to give the police our information... then over the past year the police have slowly gotten around to sending us the tickets we owe $$ for. Which is all electronic, including the citations themselves, so you never actually know that you've received.

I loved our visit with all my heart. But this is just one of those moments where I go "What planet am I from?"... since everyone seems to have known about how this all works but us. We will never forget now! It'll be awhile before we visit again though. Sigh.

Thinker Thing team developed what they are calling  the first mind created physical object. Using Emotiv EPOC headset and a 3D printer, this object was created by an evolutionary process directed by the user's brain signals.
You can get more info on Thinker Thing on the Projects section.

This image of the region surrounding the reflection nebula Messier 78, just to the north of Orion’s belt, shows clouds of cosmic dust threaded through the nebula like a string of pearls. The submillimetre-wavelength observations, made with the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope and shown here in orange, use the heat glow of interstellar dust grains to show astronomers where new stars are being formed. They are overlaid on a view of the region in visible light.

We are all stardust - and now we might be starting to be able to tell which star.

Sediment in a deep-sea core may hold radioactive iron spewed by a distant supernova 2.2 million years ago and preserved in the fossilized remains of iron-loving bacteria. If confirmed, the iron traces would be the first biological signature of a specific exploding star.

Privacy tip of the day: A number of sites have begun using Tynt.com's tracer technology to detect when you copy part of a web page so that they can track where that copied content is used.

While interesting, the use of Tynt by a site necessitates sending tracking information to Tynt's servers when you do nothing more than copy some text or drag an image from the browser, all without your knowledge or consent. This mechanism raises a number of security and privacy concerns.

If you don't want to be tracked by these sites you should disable it. One way to disable it is by using Google Chrome is to Check out "Tynt Blocker":

The Cottian Alps in Alpenglow by Stefano De Rosa
This photo of the Cottian Alps basking in alpenglow was captured a few minutes before sunrise on December 9, 2012, from Castagneto Po, Italy. The camera is facing to the southwest. Monviso (12,602 ft or 3,841 m) is the prominent peak at left center. The Sun is still below the horizon at the base of the mountain but its upper reaches are imbued with the warm light called alpenglow or sometimes aspenglow.

The Basilica of Superga, in the foreground, resides on a 2,205 ft (672 m) ridge and is one of the iconic symbols of the city of Turin. Due to the effects of perspective, the Basilica seems much closer than is actually the case. In reality, the shot was taken approximately 8 mi (13 km) from the basilica and 52 mi (84 km) from Monviso. Turin lies in the valley between the basilica and the Cottian Alps.

The distribution of matter is fundamentally flawed! It's shocking news as the Plank telescope finally maps the Galactic Slums (in blue) and the Interstellar Uptowns (in red). It would appear that the globular cluster Rotschild 2248H alone contains over 33% of the existing matter in the universe.

Surprisingly, however, 80% of the Dark Matter appears to be concentrated in Luton, UK (planet Earth). Scientists from Her Majesty's Revenues and Customs Service are now verifying whether Luton's Council tax should be reformed to take into account this extra wealth.

I'm a bit puzzled at how people think that in Cyprus something strange is going on.

When I was in the Ukraine the banks kept 100% of the deposits overnight, and then they'd call you home, saying that "if you give us 10K more, maybe we can free some of your frozen money". Which is request for ransom pure and simple. In Cyprus they are being given shares... I've seen much worse than that. Honest.

In Italy, right BEFORE the Euro, it was normal for the government to get money right out of everyone's account, and NO, nobody was spared. In most countries you simply CANNOT cash a cheque if it's over a very small amount. Owning cash is basically illegal.

So what? Why the hell should I feel that Cyprus is being treated unfairly? Face it, the Ponzi scheme Nixon started in 1971 is dead. Money is no more. Fiat currencies are simply dead. Euro, dollar,r... more »

"(Phys.org) —A study on human mitochondrial DNA has led to a new estimate of the time at which humans first began to migrate out of Africa, which was much later than previously thought.

The new study by an International group of evolutionary geneticists used mitochondrial DNA from the remains of ancient modern humans to estimate the rate of genetic mutations. Three of the skeletons were from the Czech Republic and dated at 31,000 years old, two were 14,000 years old, from Oberkassel, Germany. Another sample used was the natural mummy Ötzi the Iceman, who lived some time between 3350 and 3100 BC. The most recent skeleton was that of a man who lived in medieval France 700 years ago, while the oldest was dated at 40,000 years ago, and came from Tianyuan in China.

The results suggest that the genetic divergence between African and non-African humans began between 62 and 95 thousandye... more »
