Google Maps detours around I-5 bridge failure

I checked Yahoo Maps and Mapquest too. Google's the only one to note the detour around the broken bridge on Interstate 5 in Washington.

Customer escalation regarding a problem with poor network performance.  Our field engineers are normally pretty bright, but they're throwing weird non-sequiturs at me like the supposed "Large Receive Offload bug," which tells me they're in full panic mode.

I can apparently buy last year's model of Diamondback's Podium 7 road bike for only $3700 through my employer's "perks" program.

The 11 speed Campy Super Record group on that bike is worth the purchase price, and another $1000 for the  Easton EC90S wheels.

Too bad they don't have my size available.

Oreik ET hand made bicycle

I saw the infamous Oreik ET bicycle at San Jose bike party last Friday.  The owner is known to make these custom frankenbikes like this in his workshop.

Oreik ET is "Te Kiero" (or "Te Quiero" -- Spanish for "I love you") in reverse.

BMC Train

5 km from the finish on Mount Diablo.

It took me well over an hour to reach this point from the park gate, and I don't mind saying that I'm very well cooked. These guys covered this distance in about 40 minutes and they  still had the gas to chase down a very fast breakaway.

Amber Nebin

I was eating lunch inside the media tent watching the women's time trial when I watched Amber go down pretty hard during a twisty descent on the time trial :-(

Winds were gusty on Friday and a crosswind apparently caught her rear disk wheel, causing her to lose control. She broke her hip and a rib or two.

Dave Zabriskie also crashed yesterday while he was warming up for this time trial.

Lee Slone's Kitty of Flanders represent on Metcalf Road, San Jose.

I jogged up this road 2 miles and 1200 feet, shot photos at the finish, then ran back down. I'm not accustomed to running, and my legs have moved beyond pain into a transcendent place beyond physical reality.

I met a super interesting and enthusiastic woman on the bus this morning. She's a paraplegic who teaches yoga to the able bodied.

"They see me pull my wheelchair upstairs and realize they have absolutely no excuses left for their lack of activity," she told me with a huge smile on her face.

The grave of Lupe the Columbian Mammoth

I stopped by the not-quite-final resting place of Lupe the Columbian Mammoth along the Guadalupe River Trail this morning.  The  sign at the left of this photo describes her discovery.

Roger Castillo was walking his dog along this trial in 2005 when he spotted Lupe's skull poking through the mud. Paleontologists from UC Berkeley disinterred her fossilized remains and worked with the Children's Discovery Museum two miles upstream in San Jose to create an exhibit with Lupe's bones.  The exhibit opened in 2011.

In the meantime, trail users began reporting ghost-like elephant trumpeting along the river near Lupe's original resting place near Trimble Road.  Rumors circulate of a terrifying prehistoric elephant charging cyclists on the trail.
