A Short of Gods

Review of Belly of the Universe by Daniel P Swenson

I'm giving this four starts because it was too damn short. I felt that the piece would have been better as a short story instead of the size of flash fiction.

That being said I felt that the characters had just enough dimension to make them real. It does rely on some knowledge of Greek mythology. The slow pace hinted at the funeral march that was the whole of the piece. Resignation as a character flaw added just the right flavor to the piece.

A Delicious Meal of Words

Review of +Rick Wayne"s Agony in Violet (The Heretic Arcanum Book 1)

The chef in Agony in Violet reminds me of Midnight in Constantine.  Both enigmatic but confident in their abilities. Both kings of their domains. Now some may consider this similarity a bad thing but I found it easier for me to suspend belief as it allowed me to build a better mental characterization of Etranger.

I almost didn't read the story because the beginning of it felt a little political to me but I gave it my 10 minute challenge. I'm tougher on books than the 40 minute challenge since I tend to read a bit quick. It survived the challenge and it left me pleasantly pleased that I did give it the 10 minute challenge. By the time the 10 minutes were up I had already met all the major characters, understood the urgency because of the kid, felt... more »

Book reviews - I does them

tl;tr: Got books to review let me know and I'll start with the cheapest and work my way up - probably buying all of them if I like your work.

I'm almost done with the first 12 books I've bought from Indie Authors here on the pluses, taken about a week to read them. I'm looking for more to read. I will be picking up some of the series that these guys have written but between them I like reading other books. I've been know to read as many as 4 books at once.

I also do book reviews. Find the collection of them here: https://goo.gl/lblb5p

I'll be honest, the first book I get from an author is the cheapest one they have to offer. I'm poor and I have to feel the author is worth the value. The better I like the author the more I'm willing to spend. I've already pre-ordered an omnibus from one of them... more »

I'll be honest, the first book I get from an author is the cheapest one they have to offer. I'm poor and I have to feel the author is worth the value. The better I like the author the more I'm willing to spend. I've already pre-ordered an omnibus from one of them and two books from the series of another. I've got no problems plopping down as much as $20 US on a good eBook but the author has to of already grabbed me.

So what does this mean for aspiring Indie Authors, or people who just want their book reviewed? It means you could get a good review out of me. I'm not asking for you to give me a free ebook. I'm asking for you to have the courage to say "Hey Doc, will you read my book?"

If you let me know about your books you'll be doing us both a favor. I'll not have to go hunting for more books to read and you'll be getting a review and possibly more books sold.

Sorry if I come off pompous, I just want to spend my money on Indie Authors before I start on mainstream. I'd rather support the up and comers than the people who've already made a small fortune on their works.___

All in all this is story well worth reading, especially if you plan to read the rest of the series. The first book provides a great foundation to build the series on.___

These people, I know them. They are some of the most caring, giving, selfless, non judgmental people I know. They have opened their home to many people, including myself, and have helped many others even when they have been struggling themselves. It's only 5,000$. If I could give it all, I would, but I can't. Thus is why I'm turning to you all, my other friends. Many of you have been there. Anything would help. For those of you that may ask about it, They HAD insurance. However, there was a Loan on the car still that was not yet fully, but was almost paid off, and that Ate the Insurance check that was sent to them.

They are some of my best friends, and to seeng this happen to them just as they are getting back on their feet after credit problems is heartwrenching. If you cannot give a little money, then please at least share it for me.

Thank you.

X:\Users\AdroidX>start eden.exe_ by +anne carly abad
This piece takes a systematic approach to creation. A reader with any programming knowledge and or 1337 speak will get a kick out of the piece. The jokes are cleverly hidden in obvious site but don't overburden the piece detracting from the technical aspects of the story. By the end you may be very well cheering for the "bad guy".

Mote by +Erin Vataris
This piece inspired me to break out some Kansas and listen to "Dust in the Wind". The anger in the piece is just as potent as the sadness and then resignation as the end is the same as the beginning.

The Gardeners of Eden by Jason Bougger
Two things Gnomes and it's not going to end the way you think it does. Poor gnomes didn't get a fair chance.

There are many other great stories in this anthology and I'm sure you'll find the ones you'll come to love.___

Student Walkout Staged Because Transgender Student Wants to Use the Girl's Bathroom

Students at a high school in Missouri have walked out in protest after a controversy surrounding a transgender student’s use of the girls’ locker room.

Hillsboro High School senior Lila Perry was born a male, but has identified as female since age 13. According to KMOV, the school offered Perry a private, gender-neutral restroom, but Perry turned it down, saying:

“I wasn’t hurting anyone and I didn’t want to feel segregated out. I didn’t want to be in the gender neutral bathroom. I am a girl, I shouldn’t be pushed off to another bathroom.”

Perry’s continued push to use the girls’ locker room resulted in a nearly two hour protest, as between 150 to 200 students walked off campus.

Budapest Train Station Site of Migrant Demonstrators Wanting to Get on Trains to Germany

Hundreds of angry migrants demonstrated outside Budapest's Eastern Railway Terminus on Tuesday demanding they be allowed to travel on to Germany, as the biggest ever influx of migrants into the European Union left its asylum policies in tatters.

Around 1,000 people waved tickets, clapping, booing and shouting "Germany! Germany!" outside the station. Later they sat down, staring at a police blockade erected at the entrance.

"Please, we are human too," said a sign in German held up by a young boy in a smaller group which protested into the evening.

Seagate 2 Terabyte Drive Will Fit Into an Ultrabook

I'm pretty excited about this as it could give me a chance to upgrade my laptops hard drive to a size that matters to me.

While 2TB mobile hard drives are not new, a drive that offers such high density into this particular thickness is. It means that those wanting the thinnest notebooks possible won't need to sacrifice overall storage. 2TB of storage in an Ultrabook is quite dreamy.

The companies have joined together as the Alliance for Open Media to create a new open source video format. The organization includes all three major web browser makers and some of the biggest players in online video (Cisco, don’t forget, makes WebEx, one of the most popular business teleconferencing tools in the world). Apple, which develops its own Safari web browser, and Facebook are conspicuously absent from the group.___

A Howling Good Read

Review of +R.J. Blain's Tales of the Winter Wolfe: Vol 1

I've read many werewolf novels and played many werewolf based games but rarely have they had the wolf / human interaction of Tales of the Winter Wolf. It is a quick easy read but that only serves to offer the opportunity to sniff out what Richard and Nicolina are about. Richard is too playful for his age while Nicolina is too mature. The love / hate relationship gives you something to sink your teeth into while you're running through the pages of suspense, action, and of course death.

Review of +Damian Trasler's Science Fiction Shorts

I laughed and was driven to turn page after page. The irony of the cube reminded me of Twilight Zone episodes. The boglet got what was coming to it and I got a hardy chuckle out of it. You find out what happens when unabashed arrogance meets genius with a dash of paranoia. If that wasn't enough you get a great taste of the pulp SciFi from the Golden Era as a final story to cut your teeth on.

Lack of Sleep Could Be Giving You a Cold

As some one with chronic insomnia I knew I was susceptible to more health issues than those lucky bastards that get to sleep. I didn't know I would be increasing my chances of getting a cold. Time to try for more sleep and swallow more vitamin C and B vitamins.

Aric Prather, lead author of the study, and his colleagues found that those who slept less than five hours were 4.5 times more likely to have a cold than those who slept seven hours.

Only 18% of those who slept six or more hours got a cold, while 39% of those slept less than six hours got the virus.

Only 18% of those who slept six or more hours got a cold, while 39% of those slept less than six hours got the virus.___

Some One Besides Trump

Won't say I'm in support of Bernie yet but I will say +Mz Maau makes a very good point. Use your power and vote.

Keep that fucker out of office.

And, should you desire to vote for Bernie, be sure you're up on your state's voting regulations:

Flowing stories that will grip your imagination long after you're done reading.

Review of +Lisa Cohen's Stranger Worlds Than These: A Short Story Collection

Unspoken sacrifice worth unspoken value. Death needs release. The root of Almighty anger. Forgetful technology. Water bound love. The curse of a blessing. The next generation in the light.

Each story deals with a handy topic described by LJ Cohen but reaches deeper than the topic description. I found myself looking for deeper meanings in each story and finding them. I don't know if Cohen intended to leave these hidden gems within the stories but they sparkle if you are willing to look.

For the folks that use collections - Have noticed an increase in readership of your posts?

I decided earlier this month to segment out a good number of my posts based on topics and the thought process that not everyone wants to read everything I post. After making this decision I've noticed a dramatic increase in readership.

I'm wondering if collections are receiving some sort of signal boost from G+.

War Room Not That Surprising at the Box Office

I can't say I was really looking forward to this movie but I knew it wasn't going to do bad at the theaters. I'm no film critic but the movie didn't really have any strong challengers. Scott Mendelson makes a good pointed that we need to change the way we rate/rank movies at the box office.

Pretty much every box office report posted yesterday has some variation on the notion that War Room‘s strong performance was something of a surprise. In truth, the only surprise about the strong $11 million debut weekend of Alex Kendrick’s War Room is that anyone was shocked in the first place. The “Nobody could have seen this coming!” narrative is a prime example of how we compartmentalize box office analysis and how we refuse to let go of our old presumptions about what does or doesn’t make money. Obama Pisses Off Ohio

I get that Ohio wants to keep the republican President McKinley's name sake but wasn't it wrong of us to change it from Denali in the first place.

Wherever you stand on the name change I'd like to know what the hell changing the name of a mountain has to do with Obama's alleged job-killing war on energy. I think Rep. Bob Gibbs is trying to sensationalize his pissed offness and using the name change as an excuse to get himself in the lime light.

"President Obama has decided to ignore an act of Congress in unilaterally renaming Mount McKinley in order to promote his job-killing war on energy," Gibbs said in a tweeted statement Sunday. "This political stunt is insulting to all Ohioans."

White Supremacist Ejected from Court

I normally try to practice a live and let live attitude, even with people I loath, but I can't wait for this guy to get what he's got coming to him. He admitted to killing three Jewish people and then says it was necessary. Well this may be a knee jerk emotional response but I hope they put this guy under the prison.

Miller has admitted he fatally shot three people at two Jewish sites in the Kansas City area in April last year, but pleaded not guilty, calling the death of Jews necessary.

Is Peace Possible in South Sudan?

"The cease-fire has not been respected by the government since it was declared and this is because they still are on the offensive," Machar said. "If this situation goes on, it means the peace agreement is not implementable. And if a peace agreement is not implementable, then it is just a paper."

Trains and Boats in Europe Being Stopped Due to Migrants

Europe's migrant problem is starting to sound like a tragic algebra problem. Both the migrant count crossing boards and the death tolls are rising. Millions are being spent to try to build camps for the migrants that have managed to make it to France. Hungary is stopping trains of migrants, literally. Greece coast guard has rescued thousands of migrants.

We may not be in a world war yet but we are in a world crisis. Europe is barely recovering from its various financial crisis and now a strain is being put on the economy by thousands of migrants. How long before other 1st world countries start pitching in to provide aid?

HUNGARY: A train that left Budapest for Munich at 9.10am Monday morning with migrants on board is standing at the Hungarian-Austrian border at Hegyeshalom waiting for “authorities’ action”, Hungarian railway operator MAV has said.

GREECE: The coastguard has rescued about 2,500 migrants and refugees off the country’s eastern islands over the past three days, Greek authorities said on Monday, as the flow of people trying to cross into Europe continued unabated.

FRANCE: European authorities are giving France an extra €5 million to aid migrants who have clustered in a camp in Calais in the hope of sneaking across the English Channel to Britain.

_GERMANY: Angela Merkel said on Monday that if Europe was not able to agree to a fair distribution of refugees, the passport-free Schengen zone would be called into question.___

Angry Birds Angry at Profit Loss

I never did see the attraction of Angry Birds but I commend Rovio on their ability to make such huge profits off of such a simple game. Unfortunately for them they didn't keep up with the current mobile game model, micro-transactions.

The often touted but regularly delayed stock-market listing of Rovio, creator of the hugely popular "Angry Birds" mobile game, could be even more distant after this week's warning of lower earnings and a planned cull of more than a third of its staff.

Rovio, which is pinning its hopes on an Angry Birds 3D movie due for release in May 2016, said on Wednesday sales had been lower than expected and forecast falling profits for the full year. It said it was cutting up to 260 jobs.

Microsoft Wins Lawsuit - Moves Forward with Nokia Windows Phone

InterDigital lost their patent lawsuit clearing the way for Microsoft to double down on it's work with Nokia. InterDigital says they aren't concerned due to Nokia's limited market.

“Today’s decision is disappointing but is expected to have a limited impact on our going-forward business, given the decline of the Nokia mobile device business under Microsoft’s control and its limited market position”, said William J. Merritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of InterDigital.

Apple TV Doubling in Price - Is It Worth It?

I've never been a fan of the Apple Hype Machine as it results in over priced products that are sub par in my opinion. That being said, I'm curious about the new Apple TV coming out and how it's going to stand up against Chromecast and Roku. Maybe Siri will work as expected on the Apple TV.

9to5Mac is reporting that the next generation Apple TV will cost between $US149 and $US199 which would most likely translate to about $250 in Australia. That’s a big jump from the $US69 it currently costs in the States and $109 locally.

If we do see that price jump, it would mean that Apple’s streaming box will now be significantly more expensive than Google’s Chromecast and even Telstra’s soon to be launched Roku based Telstra TV which is expected to be priced at about $100.

Amazon can Make U.S. Postal Service Deliver on Sunday

If you call from an earlier post I was frustrated because my Kindle and books were sitting at the post office less than a mile away from me. Well apparently Amazon can get the U.S. Postal service to deliver on Sunday because after I got home from running errands I grabbed the news paper and noticed there was a package in the mail box.

There was my Kindle and books. I didn't even know there was any such thing as special delivery with the Post Office.

I'm about half way through +Lisa Cohen's Stranger Worlds Than These . At the rate I'm reading I may have to buy more books by next week.
