Superheroes in Nature Photography

Most superheroes are pretty urban. We tend to think of Superman hanging around Metropolis, or Batman protecting Gotham. But photographer Benoit Lapray has been working for the past four or five years on a series showing superheroes in nature. Check out the following album of his superhero work!

Definitely a neat idea...but I couldn't help laughing at a few...

This is Bocksten Man. He is a medieval man who lived in 14th century Sweden. He was killed, dumped into a lake - which later turned into a bog & miraculously preserved his body - and now calls the Varberg County Museum in Sweden his home. Experts have reconstructed his face (he does look a little like Pippin') and crafted replicas of his clothing. This is what we know about him:

* He was probably blond (acids in bogs tend to turn blond hair red)
* He was probably murdered.
(a) He was secured to the ground with three wooden poles driven through his torso.
(b) At least one of the poles were taken from the roof of a building.
* He was 171 cm (5'7'') tall.
* There's a good chance he was nobility, because
(a) The femurs show signs of a lot of horseback riding during his life.
(b) He was of slender build.

Sex sells, but only if corporations profit, right? Is blood and gore really more acceptable than bare breasts on the big screen? And is it really so strange to teach abstinence only sex education? No wonder we seem crazy - Europeans weigh in on American sex norms!

Kennewick Man related to Native Americans, Gene test results reveal

Initially it was believed Kennewick Man, a 9,000 year old skeleton found in Washington state, was of Polynesian or Ainu (tribal Japan) descent. New genetic test results have determined he is genetically more closely related to Native Americans than any other population; a result sure to only complicate the legal & scientific issues surrounding the ancient skeletal remains.

Battle Armor of the 15th century
This video, made by The National Museum of the Middle Ages of Cluny, recreates actions a typical 15th century man in armor would perform, focusing specifically on demonstrating how agile one could be in a full suit of armor. The titles are in French, but the moves are simple enough to understand. Great video for dispelling many common misconceptions about medieval armor and fighting.
Notice how brutal up-close and personal fighting could be!

Republican Senators Just Voted To Sell Off Your National Forests
Almost every Republican Senator just voted to sell our National Forests, Wildlife Refuges and Wildernesses to the highest bidder. A budgetary amendment called SA 838 is part of ongoing, and potentially unconstitutional efforts taking place in Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Alaska and Idaho to see those states take possession of public land from the federal government, then allow the exploitation of their resources by private industry. Read the article below to find out what you can do to stop this and who exactly these senators are (including some dems).

Caturday: The Photographer Who Took This Picture Barely Escaped With His Life
This photograph was snapped by Atif Saeed (Facebook, Flickr) at a safari zoo park near Lahore. He got out of his jeep to take the photo, but the sound of the lens's whizzing caught the lion's attention. Saeed figures the big cat got as close as 10 feet, before he was able to reach the safety of his jeep.
Once safely inside his vehicle, Saeed started to laugh about what had happened. But after some retrospection he came to realize just how close he came to death — and vowed to never do anything quite as reckless again.

Lucky lion cubs move in with humans after their zoo in Gaza is destroyed
After Israeli strikes on Gaza in 2014, the Rafah Zoo in the southern Gaza Strip struggled to recover from physical damage and the resulting economic fallout. Many of the animals died, and those that survived faced harsh conditions and malnourishment. Fortunately Saad Al-Jamal, a Palestinian man, bought and rescued Max and Mona, two-and-a-half-month-old lion cubs, and is sharing his home with them. Open the article to see their new life with humans!

Every few days I think I'm going to post a series titled Historyporn, a collection of the most interesting Historical photographs ever taken (and usually seldom seen). This one is Iran in 1979, days after the Revolution, where women protested the forced hijab rule/law. It's a great contrast of modern times and example of how hate, extremism, prejudice, and violence affects our lives.

Just an article I thought was important to share, because a large amount of people don't know that most jails/prisons do not medicate inmates who are addicts and will be withdrawing while in custody! I think this is rather cruel and messed up, not to mention just compounding the problem of addiction, violence, and smuggling into jails. A dose of methadone costs the state $1.

Here is more info on methadone maintenance, know what's myth and what's fact: http://www.cdc.gov/idu/facts/MethadoneFin.pdf

Ever wondered what our sky would like if we had a different star instead of the sun?

This visualization shows how the sunset could look like to a human observer if our Sun was replaced by some of the other stars in our galaxy with different sizes and magnitudes, namely Barnard’s Star, Gliese 581, Tau Ceti, Kepler-23, Alpha Centauri A, Procyon, Sirius, Pollux, Arcturus and Aldebaran.
It is just a concept, as liquid water and the Earth as we know it could not exist in the vicinity of the most stars in this graphic. Visualizations are based on the absolute brightness, spectral class and the radius of each star.       ------ by Martin Vargic

New discovery sheds light on the interesting possibility of homo sapiens mating with Neanderthals...

"That modern humans and Neanderthals shared the land around Manot cave 50,000 to 60,000 years ago means that the rolling hills of what is now Galilee may have provided the romantic backdrop to the spell of interbreeding that left non-Africans with a smidgen of Neanderthal DNA. Genetic studies suggest that humans and Neanderthals mixed in the same 50,000 to 60,000-year-old period, most probably in western Asia."

The Fight for 'Non-human personhood': I want to know what you think?

BACKGROUND: So I'm sure most of you heard of Sandra, the Orangutan in Argentina who was deemed 'a non-human person' by the courts and granted freedom after 20 years in captivity (http://goo.gl/I0qZOw). But the fight for Tommy the Chimpanzee in New York looks more and more bleak. A New York appeals court ruled against the case, fought by the Nonhuman Rights Project.

“One of the judges asked, ‘If we rule in your favor, does that mean we have to let all chimps out of zoos?'” Attorney Steven Wise told WIRED after the proceedings. “I said no, you wouldn’t necessarily have to.

But there are zoos, and there are zoos. The question is: Wherever a chimp is being kept, is his autonomy and self-determination being respected?”
[Although writing this with primates in mind, this applies to all animal species who display high intelligence, awareness, and social sensitivity.]

However, animal right's advocates are not giving up, "we’re in this for the long haul, and sooner or later, these cognitively complex, self-aware, autonomous animals will be recognized as having the capacity for, at very least, the right not to spend their entire lives being exploited in captivity."

IN THE SIMPLEST TERMS POSSIBLE, THIS IS OUR GOAL: We begin by seeking two kinds of fundamental rights for our nonhuman plaintiffs: bodily liberty and bodily integrity.

Bodily liberty means not being held in captivity. For a chimpanzee, it means not spending life in a laboratory; for an elephant, it means not being chained in a circus; for a whale it means not being imprisoned in a park.
Bodily integrity means not being touched without consent or in one’s best interests. For a chimpanzee, it means not being subjected to biomedical research. For an elephant it means not being beaten at a circus. For a whale it means not being forcibly inseminated to make her pregnant.
Do not confuse these fundamental rights of nonhuman animals with so-called “human rights.” Human rights are for humans. Chimpanzee rights are for chimpanzees. Dolphin rights are for dolphins. Elephant rights are for elephants.

FINALLY: Are You a Legal ‘Person’ or a Legal ‘Thing’? We are not asking that animals be given human rights. We are saying animals should not be 'things' in the eyes of the law. It is time to move on to the more "rational, nuanced, value-laden and policy-enriched question, 'What qualities does the plaintiff possess that are relevant to the issue of whether she is entitled to the legal right she claims?'" (http://goo.gl/OexhUY)

Seaworld CEO Steps Down Amid Tanking Revenues
Seaworld isn't doing too hot...Jim Atchison has stepped down from the CEO position and more than 300 employees across its 11-park system. All part of plan to cut costs due to the company's stock dropping 33% in August and attendance falling 5.6% to 8.4 million in the third quarter from 8.9 million in the same period a year ago. While the company is experiencing losses, former CEO Jim Atchison still received a $2.9 million payout. He simply resigned and moved to the position of vice chairman where he will also "serve as a consultant and advise the company on its international expansion plans and conservation initiatives."
