Spent the day cleaning and reorganizing the basement. Sorted several boxes of old software, cables, connectors, and other various doodads of the electronic age. Came across this. I must have gotten over 100 AOL free install disks during the '90s. Ah, the Golden age of dial up.

My friend Chris is a brewer. He broke his leg, so my friend Justin had some time off and offered to help him out. Later Justin tells me what he learned. "Brewing is mostly cleaning." You think you'll be measuring, mixing, testing, and tasting. But mostly it's about scrubbing out tanks and cleaning lines. I guess there's a reason the place always looks so clean. It's because they are always cleaning it.

My son got offered a job by a local music school to teach guitar lessons. However, they pay all the teachers as contractors rather than as employees, which makes sense. The problem is that my son is only 16,so the school's owner isn't sure if he can have that kind of contract with him.

Anybody know anything about this kind of thing?

OK, something of a business bet with a potential vendor, and I'm hoping crowdsourcing this will help answer the question.

We need a company that can rebuild our ERP system that's used for production and cost management for a small to mid-sized manufacturing firm.  We are talking to a firm that is capable of doing the development work.  They use .NET, Java, and C# as their main development tools. They have about 75 programmers on staff.

The question is, does this skill set and size make them unique, or are there lots of companies that can also do similar development?  Votes and comments are appreciated.

My youngest son's soccer team made it through to the second round of playoffs with a victory yesterday. Pulling into the parking lot for today's match we see our opponent, the team seeded #2 coming into the tournament. They have a full roster of huge kids, warming up with military precision.

His big brother turns to him and says, "Uh oh. This could be a problem. And only 40 minutes until game time. What you need is a training montage. And we need to describe your team as 'rag-tag.' That always works in the movies."

That's the rule I our house. If you can't be encouraging, be funny.

I just saw an interview on the local news with Cheryl Reeve, head coach of the Minnesota Lynx, a very successful WNBA franchise that won the championship in 2011 and 2013.

The reporter asked her about how she balances being a coach and a mom. Of course they'd never ask a coach of a men's team this, or the male coach of a women's team.

My first thought was they should quit asking women questions like this.

My second thought was that they should start asking men questions like this.

What do you think?

What you need to listen to

This is a 2-volume 2003 release of two live shows recorded in 1973 and 1976.  (I think I have those dates right.)  If you are only familiar with The Steve Miller Band from top 40 radio, you're going to be blown away by some great blues-based rock. I'm particularly fond of the first disc. First-rate musicianship. I find myself getting lost in the drum-bass-organ interplay.  It sounds like a forerunner of other great jam bands like Blues Traveler and Of A Revolution (OAR). Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Many times I'm the best bass player in the room.  This was not one of those times.

Last night I saw Rush on what is said to be their final tour.  3 of my kids were able to come!  It does my heart good to see a 10-year-old being exposed to some authentic '70s prog rock concept album material.  It was a great show!

These guys were one of my major inspirations to get into music. They amazed me, infuriated me (because I just can't play half of what they do half as well), and made me think. This was such a great way to see them one last time -- with my kids, my friends, and my band mates.

A post from +Darryl Mouzone reminded me of my earliest memory of Fruit Stripe Gum. Can you even get that any more? The clerk used to give me a piece of it when my dad went into the liquor store. I must have been 3 or 4.

And that reminded me of a time a couple of years ago when I was walking into a liquor store right behind a guy carrying his son, about 3 or 4 years old. As we walk into the store I hear the boy say "Hey, this doesn't look like a licorice store."

Maybe they gave him gum.
