My sunflowers have finally started blooming! This is the first that opened it's rather shy petals to the bright sun...and was immediately greeted by a bee :) The bees have been buzzing around the closed flowers waiting for them to open.

This is one of the dusk hybrid sunflowers...I expect a few more of those to balance the giant sunflowers that surround them. One corner of my front yard  is filled with the massive things (most are 5-7 feet tall :D) Expect more pictures as they start blooming in earnest.

I was given a great opportunity last night to follow behind +Kimberly Sprickman while she was shooting photos for a friend. I don't normally photograph people, so it was a new and very enjoyable opportunity. This is one of the pictures I took :)

This is the other thing I was working on yesterday. David was left a bit of money when his grandma died, and he wants to get a few tattoos (one of her birthsign, and possibly one other, which I'm designing). This isn't for him...I've been thinking of a few different triquetra-based designs. The triquetra is non-negotiable, since it symbolizes the three of us. I'm thinking of incorporating a dragon.

And plus-side...I was asked about pricing for designing a tattoo. I discussed it with Daniel and David (both of whom are of the opinion that I way undercharge for the current commissions I do), but I'm still not sure. I'm thinking $25 for a simple design like this (it took an hour or two, so it doesn't seem an unreasonable rate) up to $50 for something more involved like the tribal-based phoenix and tribal Final Fantasy designs I played around with last year.

I made these yesterday!

Cinnamon/brown sugar nuts (there are almonds, pecans, cashews and walnuts in the mix, because everyone here likes a different nut). It was very difficult to bag them up and stop eating them. Luckily, I have a bit more willpower than David (he rarely snacks, but these he couldn't put down). Made me feel good, actually :D

Now that the election's over, commence photo sharing again! I haven't been taking a whole lot of pictures lately, nor have I spent an abundant time on social media lately (between all the election BS and getting sucked back into WoW, working on NaNo, and drawing, I haven't taken a whole lot of pictures either)

So this morning, I snapped a few. A pair of Cupid (he's a hypo RTB) and Psyche (Sonoran dwarf boa). Psyche is deeply blue currently, but actually allowed herself to be handled. She usually hates being out when she's blue.

Our snake talk at the school is planned for tomorrow. In anticipation, my brain decided that it would go into overdrive today and not let me sleep. So I've been up since early-thirty planning out the poster boards for the demonstration, as well as deciding which snakes would be coming with us (Nina, Enki, Angel, Nox, Psyche and Cupid are on the bill for now, along with hatchling Glaceon...who will be on the non-touch list)

We have two 45-minute talks...they are splitting the the third grade classes in half (two classes per talk). I am nervous. In a good way.

Funny thing is, as much as I loath talking in public, as much as I dislike interacting with people...I absolutely LOVE introducing kids to snakes (we're planning on getting a lizard and perhaps a tortoise in the spring so I can expand my reptile talk a little bit). When I got home from shopping this morning, I found a little sparrow laying on my back steps. I thought at first that it was dead (I assume it had run into our window. It wouldn't be the first time). So I got +David Phelps to come out and help with it...when he started to nudge it into the dustpan, we realized it was just stunned, so we took it out to our front porch and set it on the table there so it could recover a little without having to worry about neighborhood cats, dogs or children. I gave it a few unsalted sunflower seeds and a small bowl of water...just in case it needed any.

It sat there for about five minutes, and let me snap a few pictures, before finally flying off. I still think there may have been something wrong with his leg, as his foot was curled under him in an unpleasant manner :/ But he did recover enough to fly off.

And that was my adventure today :)

I must say handling my bf's boa made me really want one of my own...although we mostly share all the snakes and don't distinguish mine/yours/ours...except when it comes to cleaning up especially foul poops

But anyway, when I had a chance to get a hypo boa for essentially free, I jumped on it! Okay, I exaggerate slightly...he wasn't precisely free. I had made arrangements with the manager of our local pet store to buy any hatchlings I produced and wasn't keeping (I had made these arrangements before I even bred the snakes to make sure I had an outlet for them, since we only wanted to breed once for the experience of it). When we were discussing arrangements for the snakes, he said he would be willing to entertain a trade if there was anything he had in the store that I'd be interested in, because we'd had our eye on a leucistic rat he's had there for a while.... more »

Unfortunately, I'd just seen that he had a young hypo red tail. I didn't really hold out much hope that he'd trade, but he was happy to (in fact, he worried that he was cheating me on the deal...but I was more than happy with it )

The hatchlings had their fifth mouse on Thursday, and today, he picked them up and brought us our new baby, Cupid.___

For #floralfriday  (curated by +Tamara Pruessner)...two flowers found at Presque Isle State Park (Pa)...a pretty yellow flower and I believe the other is a thistle. The third picture are fantastic blue flowers on a vine that winds around a telephone pole on the way to my daughter's school. I really need to find out what they are so I can do similar to the telephone pole in front of our house (my other inclination is to plant a bunch of sunflowers around it)

This is what my daughter and I have been busy doing this past week: harvesting sunflower seeds :) We still have a dozen or so sunflower heads drying on the porch awaiting their turn at having all of the seeds plucked out, dried, brined and roasted :) We have two quart-size storage bags full of roasted seeds already, and should have a few more by the time we're done (whatever we don't eat will go to feeding the birds this winter)

Most of the sunflowers left in our garden are dusk hybrids, and too small for seeds worth eating. But the birds don't seem to mind :)

For #songbirdsaturday  (curated by +John Briggs), I have a tree full of little sparrows. They are waiting for me to disappear inside with my camera so they can descend en masse and eat either the sunflower seeds or the many bugs swarming around our sunflowers :) Large groups of the little buggers flock to our yard periodically throughout the day. Rainbow fan!

My bf is a brony. He saw pictures for a Rainbow Dash sonic boom fan (I'm not a brony, so any errors in what precisely Rainbow Dash does are my own). My daughter loves MLP. So we turned her fan into a rainbow :)

The instructions showed a flying Rainbow Dash flying from a string in front of the fan. I couldn't get it weighted properly, so we just have the rainbow fan. The daughter? Doesn't mind a bit. She loves her little bit of rainbow :)

Another of the hatching babies...the third white one to make an appearance. Last night was utterly brilliant. We went to see Slaughter at Roar on the Shore…it was a free show. One of my all-time favorite bands, free. Yep, didn’t want to miss that (although I did have to talk myself through the anxiety of being in a huge crowd. )

The show was an absolute blast. The energy of the show was just incredible. Mark Slaughter still has those incredible powerhouse vocals that I fell in love with years ago (22 years ago, to be precise. Yikes, I feel old) At one point, he got down in the crowd and waded through to a small area not 20 feet away from me. Yay for closer pictures :)

+David Phelps and I went to a (free) live concert last night featuring one of my favorite bands of all time (they're in my top 5 anyway): Great White. I last saw them live about 25 years ago in Darien Lake, NY.

Much different band...three original members remain. Unfortunately, Jack Russell is no longer the lead singer and the replacement (Terry Ilous) was just not Jack. He wasn't bad. He had the vocal range...but he didn't have the crowd rapport and seemed to be trying way too hard at times. Plus...too many songs from their new, just released album and not enough classics (which the crowd, which braved horrible, rainy conditions to watch, responded very well to) Michael Lardie, on the other hand, was winking, smiling and making faces at the crowd. No wonder he got the first bra thrown  on the stage ;)

I won't deny that I probably would have had a better time without the pouring rain. Even so, it brought back really good memories of youth and the summer I had enough disposable income to go to a number of rock shows. Hopefully, it won't be raining as hard (or at all) tonight, and I'll be able to take the camera and get some pictures :)___

Soon...

We have a running joke about sinister ducks and "soon" ever since hubby got nipped by one while feeding it popcorn last year. It's not the ducks' fault! This one at the zoo was waiting for more popcorn to fall.

Next time I need a facepalm picture, I'm definitely using this one. This is Joseph, the male orangutan at the Erie Zoo. :)

Just in time for #fidofriday  (curated by +mel peifer, +Wes Lum and +Lisa Lisa)...Maya gets a bath :) Now she's all fresh and clean to go play at the +The G+ DogPark

(she's been itching very badly in the heat, so a nice cool bath with oatmeal shampoo seemed to fit the bill. Her itching's calmed a bit since her bath)

We went to the zoo again today. Spent a lot of time in the lorakeet exhibit (where I blew most of the pictures by getting too impatient and forgetting that I had the ISO set too high. I really need to pay more attention to my settings :/)

At any rate, we had a blast, and I'll likely go back to the zoo next week, so I can take more pictures :D

For #grasstuesday  (+Ray Bilcliff, +Marilou Aballe and +Margaret Tompkins )...a cabbage white butterfly hiding in the grass. There's very little actual, green grass in our front yard. This little patch is near the massive sunflowers and is shaded from the worst of the sun, so maintains a bit of green-ness :)

I'm uploading this one for #bokehtuesday  (curated by +Bob Baxley), since there's a nice bit of it behind the monkey.

The monkey himself is one I shot today at the Erie (Pa) Zoo :) Yes, I did buy a membership to the zoo this year so I could go as often as possible.

I was excited to see a fresh-out-of-its-shell cicada on our fence today. We kept the shell (it's now on our shelf)...the cicada went about its business once its wings were dry.

Went for my walk first thing this morning. I'm glad I did, because there were a lot of birds in the park looking for their breakfast :)

For #bridgewednesday , a few shots from Monday's photoshoot...on the bridge and under the bridge. The bridge is over a small creek at a nearby park.

#bridgewednesday  is curated by +Mara Acoma, +Helena Martins and +Lynda Bowyer :)

This also fits #oneprimewednesday  (+Alfie Goodrich), as they are both shot with my 50mm prime (the first at f/4 and 1/400 sec., the second at (f2 and 1/200 sec)

I was given a great opportunity last night to follow behind +Kimberly Sprickman while she was shooting photos for a friend. I don't normally photograph people, so it was a new and very enjoyable opportunity. This is one of the pictures I took :)

I love the way the sky looked yesterday when we were walking. It wasn't long before the clouds vanished, swallowed by the sea of blue and we got baked by the sun while walking. But until that point...it was very pretty. This is a lighthouse-esque observation deck at a club on the Erie bayfront.
