Daria Musk3,480,703Expand to read the story and learn how to join live!Three years ago to the day, I stood in front of my computer - a guitar in my hands, songs in my heart, fingers trembling - about to press a button that said, "Hangout". I was still waterlogged with rainy nights of lugging my amps into tiny clubs and tears from the not-knowing-what-would-happen to my dreams. That night, when I hit "Hangout" you saved my dreams, you saved me. Your faces popped in. We sang all night. Six hours later my heart was six million times bigger and I would never be the same. Every year I want to celebrate that day. I want to thank you face to face. I want to meet back at our special place and sing your praises. It's time for Hangoutiversary III. PLEASE, BE CELEBRATEDSo please, meet me on July 16th. Right here, inside the place where we had our virtual first date. Comment back and let me know that you're planning to come, I will organize special circles of you all, so we can rotate the 10 seats and meet and meet and meet again.I'll sing our songs of celebration. I'll sing new songs of adoration, to you and this crazy world that gives us a chance just when we think maybe it can't. Come with your hopes and your dreams to be amplified and your updates and your friends and families and fantasies. Let's sing 'til our throats go weak and dance in front of computer screens, like the silly beautiful people we know ourselves to be.  HOW TO HANGIn case you're new or rusty all you have to do to join this Hangout is: ✪ RSVP a big fat yes here.✪ On Wednesday, July 16th come back to this page when the Hangout starts (6PM Eastern US Time).✪ You can watch or click "join" to on my page +Daria Musk!✪ Don't for get to comment and let me know if you want to join and around what time. ePublish Unum - Education for Authors162,280We admit it--sometimes we focused too much on the latter end of the digital publishing lifecycle. But for many should-be authors, getting past the "why would anyone care what I have to write about?" is a giant hurdle. If you're sitting there filled with self-doubt, you certainly aren't going to start writing, let alone get published. On the next Books & Beer Hangout, +Michael O'Reilly joins us for a lively conversation about this very topic. We'll deal with fears, rewards, tests and motivation to move you past that point and get you started on the path to being a published author. And remember, you can join in for the B&B Hangover at :15 after the hour to get your questions answered live! But you have to be in our circles to get the invite, so do so now!Books & Beer is co-produced and co-hosted by +Evo Terra & +Jeff Moriarty, publishing pioneers and craft beer enthusiasts. Gailen Mapes66,670Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera  N-Q - 9 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to July 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting June 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-08-09 11:07:541394111CC G+

Gailen Mapes65,796Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera  N-Q - 9 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-07-09 16:13:04147408CC G+

They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting February 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-03-28 10:19:32145408CC G+

Has Anyone Experienced This With Reviews?

Last week I did five reviews on Google Local for places that I got to try out over the preceding week. Last night I happened to look at my Reviews page, and saw that all five of them had been flagged and marked private, with a note that they didn't adhere to the content policies, which can be found at https://support.google.com/plus/answer/2622994?hl=en&ref_topic=2624941

My first thought was maybe they were flagged under the Spam category, since I type pretty fast and may have submitted all five of them within a 5-10 minute window. So I tried resubmitting just one of them last night, only to find that it's been re-flagged today. I snipped one of the reviews (which you might recognize from a post I did last week) in hopes that someone is able to clue me in on why this review doesn't adhere to the content policy. I'm... more »

All By Myself

If you haven't yet watched the most brilliant video of the year so far, you owe it to yourself to do so. It's gone around on Vimeo, but the creator has just uploaded it to YouTube. Check it out and marvel at some great creativity in action making the best of a long night in an airport.

No, Really, Just One More...

Yes, yes, I know I said yesterday that I was just uploading that last fireworks shot from the Fourth of July, but it appears I was mistaken. I found one more that I wanted to share, as I thought it ended up with a nice effect. It sure is interesting how the very light ripples in the water change the look of the fireworks in the reflection.

So have a great day, and I promise I'll have something different for tomorrow!

More Fluid Than Knee?

Sorry for a few days of not posting. I've been laid up a bit after injuring my knee, which proceed to swell up. After the weekend ended and it was still puffy, I gave the doctor a call. They were able to get me in this morning, at which point they kindly removed a fair amount of fluid from the aforementioned knee. The fellow doing the removing suggested that I get a picture of the amount so that I could show my wife so she wouldn't think I was making it all up to shirk household responsibilities or something. Is this the modern-day equivalent of a doctor's note?

Some Days There Are Monkeys

Today I had to go do some work out in the hill country southwest of Austin, and while I was in the neighborhood got to do a little exploring with my camera. It turns out that not all the wildlife in the area is what you'd normally expect when you think of Texas. Here's one shot I got, as an example. I was a little annoyed I didn't have a longer lens with me, as there were some other shots I just couldn't get with the 70mm. Ah well, live and learn. Next time I'll be ready!

Oklahoma At Zilker!

Sunday evening I went to see the annual Zilker Summer Musical at the Zilker Hillside Theater with family and friends. This year's production is Roger and Hammerstein's Oklahoma. We had a great time! The casting was excellent and the performances were great. In particular Quinton Johnson as Will Parker and Leslie Hethcox as Ali Hakim each stole the show with their fantastic work. It's a fun show, and it runs for one more Thursday through Sunday weekend (August 14-17) so if you're in or around the Austin area you still have a chance to see it.

My one complaint about the whole evening is that there is a rule against leaving unattended blankets on the hillside prior to 6 PM to make things fairer for everyone. I arrived at 5:45 to get a good spot and the entire center of the hill was covered with mostly unattended blankets. Clearly someone... more »

Hopefully this rule will get better enforced again as it used to be.

Anime Overload 2014: Day Two

I've added the second day's batch of photos to my Anime Overload album. It was quite a long day, and I took a lot of shots, but the convention was tons of fun. I hope a lot of the people included in here are able to find their pictures, as I was very motivated to include at least one shot of everyone. I don't want anyone to be left out. I should also point out that lighting in the hotel wasn't always the best, and was particularly problematic in the main event hall. I did my best to compensate, but if you're included in here and don't like the shot just let me know and I'll be happy to remove it.

Here gracing the front of this post is another shot I got of +Holly Gloha, who was extraordinarily gracious enough to give me another opportunity or two to get her picture over the weekend. In this one we stepped out just past the... more »

In this one we stepped out just past the hotel parking lot and found a shady area with some natural background. It was still very hot outside despite the shade, and I'm glad Holly was willing to put up with it in her costume. I'd also like to point out that I attended a couple of panels and was impressed with her kindness and patience with even troublesome audience members. She's a class act all around.

I snipped one of the reviews (which you might recognize from a post I did last week) in hopes that someone is able to clue me in on why this review doesn't adhere to the content policy. I'm certainly open to suggestions.

The most frustrating thing about this is that I see no avenue of recourse toward solving the problem. There's no link or contact about what to do if you feel your content doesn't violate the policy, or how to get any clarification of exactly what the problem is. I enjoy writing reviews for places on Google+, and I'm pretty sure that Google wants to have users write reviews of places, but it would be handy if there were a bit more transparency as to how to work out any rough spots that arise in the process.

If I do happen to figure out how to proceed, or an official answer as to what's wrong here, I'll be sure to update things so that I'm not the only one to know. Hopefully it's something that can be corrected.  :)___

Anime Overload 2014: Day One

I spent some time yesterday at Anime Overload, an Austin anime convention celebrating its sixth year. I had a wonderful time running around taking pictures, and I must say that it's great to have a large group of interesting people who really want to have their picture taken.

There were all levels of skill represented, but every single person was excited and proud of their costume and happy to have someone interested in getting shots of their handiwork. I've tried to include at least one shot of each person, so they can find themselves online. It just makes me happy to look at every one of them. The fun and excitement were definitely contagious.

I'm headed off for day two today, and expect to have just as good a time as yesterday. I did go cycling for an hour this morning, so we'll see how my legs feel this evening after... more »

A Bit Of Fun At Dub Academy

Last week I got to go on a +Google Local Austin event during which we toured several East Austin locations. One of the places is called Dub Academy, which I had previously never heard of. It's a non-profit school for learning how to DJ and mix songs, which is something I've never done. We got to do a quick 20-minute intro on this equipment, and it was really fascinating to get a peek behind the scenes of the art and science of mixing and scratching. It had never even crossed my mind that a place like this existed, though I'm not exactly sure where I assumed people learned this skill.

Now that I know it's there, maybe I'll go back and take a full lesson to really learn the basics. I definitely recommend checking it out if you're in Austin and have ever thought that it might be kind of fun to do this. Enjoy!

Bee Experiment Runs Amok...

Regular readers may recall that several weeks ago we had some bees inhabit one of our owl houses. (The one that we don't usually have owls living in.) We're a fan of having bees around to pollinate plants and such, so we've left them to their own devices. However, I am beginning to think the hive is about to outgrow the house. We may have to call a bee expert and have them relocated to a more suitable location. Still, it's been pretty impressive watching the mass of them grow.

Here are a couple of our baby chicks looking pretty grown-up. It's amazing how fast the time goes. We've had them between 5 and 6 months now. Any day now all six of them will be laying, which is pretty exciting.

And Now For Something Completely A Little Different

While I was out shooting the Milky Way last Saturday night I ran across this road maintenance vehicle and decided it would make a fine addition to my Nature of Construction album. Given that most of the other shots in the album are of flowers and construction equipment, I figured the Milky Way and construction equipment would be a little change of pace. Also, you never see all those other Milky Way photographers out there including construction equipment in their shots, so maybe this is unique. Clearly I'll have to Google that...

Galactic Selfie

While I had the camera set up for shooting the stars the other evening I took the time to clamber up and get a shot of myself looking up at the Milky Way. I kind of like the way it came out, and that it isn't your run of the mill selfie. I hope all of you get to do some viewing like this very soon!

Star Gazing

Last night my friend Amber accompanied me to my favorite dark(er) sky spot near Austin to watch the stars and take some pictures.  Living in a city it's easy to forget (or never to have seen, sadly enough) how spectacular the Milky Way is as it wraps across the sky overhead. Since the center of our galaxy is located in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, it's best situated for viewing and photography around this time of year, when the Sun is in the opposite part of the sky from it. That makes this a great time to pick a clear night and head out of town to look up and stare for a while. Here's a shot I got of Amber doing exactly that, with the Milky Way glowing above her.

Halfway There!

Today marks the first day with three of our six chickens laying eggs. I can't imagine that the other three are too far behind. I find it interesting that (presumably) the newest one laid an egg that with notably lighter color than the other two. We have multiple breeds, so maybe that's a breed thing. They certainly all eat the same food and live under the same conditions. I'll be curious to see whether the color differences continue, or whether it's just an issue of it being a first egg, which can make them a little wonky. Regardless, it's one more development toward having a rather large quantity of eggs available for our family.

And Then There Were Two...

We've had only one of our chickens laying eggs for the past couple of weeks, waiting expectantly for the others to join in. Yesterday there was again only one egg, but we kind of thought it might be from another hen. Today we know for sure! There were two eggs waiting for me in the nesting box. Soon we will be awash in yummy organic eggs!

Model And Camera

At the event I went to last Thursday evening Olympus was kind enough to bring a bunch of cameras and lenses to try out. They also happened to bring a model along to help show things off and provide us an awesome subject. Here's a shot I got of Lexi with one of the Olympus cameras. I like the fact that the off-camera flash let me get a good image of her while letting the whole background fade out into darkness. I'm really enjoying the learning process as I go along.

More Purple Martins Than You Can Shake A Stick At...

Each summer hundreds of thousands of purple martins from all over central Texas converge on the Highland Mall area of Austin, and roost in a small group of trees each evening. This year the gathering estimated at about 600,000. The swirling mass of birds around sunset is amazing.

We went out last night to watch the spectacle, and it did not disappoint. I took this video which shows the group beginning to converge on the trees, though hundreds of thousands are still flying about clearing the surrounding area of bugs in an enormous evening snack. It was hard to get good pictures of the masses of birds in the trees, but I'll see what I can come up with.

There were probably at least a hundred people there last night to watch. I hope you get to go see it yourself, but I recommend wearing a hat, a rain poncho, or bringing an umbrella. There's definitely the risk of getting a little fallout from the flock.

EDIT: I also realized, this is my very first YouTube video. Very exciting. :)___

Interesting Hats Make Interesting Pictures

Here's another shot I took at Russian House bar and restaurant the other evening. This young lady and some friends were enjoying themselves wearing the various Russian hats and taking selfies. I thought this particular hat looked really good on her, and the Russian mural on the wall added to the ambiance.

Drinking and Clicking, Russian Style

I went to a +Drink and Click™ event last night, this time at Austin's very pleasant Russian House. It's a bar and restaurant with an entirely Russian menu, and it's really quite good. The foyer has a couple of wardrobes filled with various Russian hats and costumes, so guests are welcome to really get into the spirit of things. It turns out that putting on an interesting hat in a venue filled with a lot of photographers is pretty much an invitation to have a lot of people take your picture, even if you're one of the photographers. This shot is of Sarah, who was there trying out one of the Olympus cameras which the Olympus reps were kind enough to bring and doing her best to live up to the name of the event. She put on one of the hats, and sure enough she got her own picture taken.

Some Of This Light Is Gorgeous! Some Of It Is Not.

Here's another shot of our Milky Way galaxy over the Texas horizon from about a week ago. I have to drive about 45 minutes out of Austin to get dark enough skies for decent viewing of the Milky Way, but as you can see the horizon is still polluted with light from that distance. It's getting harder and harder to find really dark skies in the U.S., so you should definitely take advantage of the viewing when you do find yourself someplace far enough out on a clear night. Also, I know that some cities are taking actions to help curb light pollution, which incidentally also wastes money and energy, so if you enjoy seeing the wonders of the night sky you might mention to your elected officials that you'd like them to do what they can to cut down on wasted light pointed up at the sky. Bye Soccer, See You Again Around Here In Four Years!

Each World Cup I hear an announcer say something like "There's so much interest this year in the U.S., maybe the sport will finally catch on." I think the sport is plenty popular here among people who participate in sports. It's just not sufficiently popular with the TV networks, probably because the clock doesn't stop during play so there's no place to insert regular TV commercials. What do you think it would take to bring the sport to at least the popularity of, say, hockey in the U.S.?

Incidentally, I took this shot across the street from my son's recent swim meet, where I determined that it's apparently not soccer season around here...

Summer Swim Team Draws To A Close

I just got home from my older son's Divisional Championship meet for his summer swim team. While it's a pain to have to get up at 5 AM on Saturdays to go to swim meets during the summer, they're actually quite a pleasant time. He's been swimming with this summer team for about 11 years now, and the improvement over the years is pretty impressive. Here he is during the 100m Butterfly. As it turns out, swim meets are also a fun time for me to take pictures. :)

The Pile Of Bees Is Growing...

At their current rate I'm pretty sure they're going to take over the world in a month or two. On the other hand, I'm guessing there's lots of pollination going on in our yard.

One More Fireworks Shot

Here's one last shot I took at the Quarry Lake fireworks show on the Fourth of July. I don't think it's as spectacular as the other two I shared, but it's a nice representation of the setting out there. The lake is beautiful and peaceful, and turns out to be a great setting for shooting exploding things into the sky. On the plus side, I learned a few more things about taking pictures of fireworks this year, and I look forward to next year so hopefully I can do even better. In the meantime, I hope you all have a great day!

At one point during the Fourth of July fireworks show at Quarry Lake I decided to point my camera down toward the water and see what the reflections looked like. As it happens, they looked pretty impressive. I like the way this shot turned out.

Milky Way Over Texas

Saturday evening I noticed that the sky was clear, and that the moon was going to set a bit after 1 AM. That seemed kind of late to drive out into the countryside in search of dark skies, but I've really been wanting to try taking a picture of the Milky Way. So I consumed some caffeine and drove about 40 miles out of town, and was rewarded with a really nice view of the sky. It's still close enough that light pollution is an issue along the horizon, as you can see in this shot, but overall the sky is way more visible than in town. So here it is, my first attempt at a shot of our very own galaxy, the Milky Way. I look forward to finding better (and more interesting) locations, and improving my technique. I'll be sure to share the results with you all.

The Most Expensive Egg Ever!

Months of work and more dollars than I care to tally have finally paid off. Yesterday morning I discovered one of the chickens sitting in the nesting box looking vaguely perplexed at what was going on, and when I checked back an hour or two later this tiny little egg awaited me. Soon we should be awash in fresh, wholesome, organic eggs!

Enjoying The Fourth Of July

I've lived in my house for nearly 20 years now, and over the years have heard fireworks on July 4th somewhere within a few miles, but I've never known where they were. Generally we head down to Austin's big fireworks display with the symphony, so I haven't explored to find the nearby spot. Well this year Auditorium Shores is under construction, so Austin moved its annual fireworks display out to the Circuit of the Americas track, which is pretty exactly the opposite side of town from me. I wasn't really keen on driving that far for the show, but fortunately +Simi Shonowo mentioned to me that there would be fireworks at The Quarries, quite near my house. Lo and behold, they've been having theirs for 15-20 years now, and I believe I've found the show I've been hearing all this time.

The conditions were great! The storm that passed through the night before left clear skies in its wake, and by sunset the temperature was very comfortable. I was fortunate enough to get a spot to set up my stuff right by the water's edge, so I had a great unobstructed view for taking pictures. I got several shots I really like, and I'll add them to the album as I get them done. It was all in all a really great time, and it only took me five minutes to get home afterward.

I hope all of you had as good of a time on your Fourth of July!___

Lizard Of Substance

This morning I heard some birds outside my bedroom window throwing a fit, and looked outside to see a pretty significant lizard outside suffering their wrath. Fortunately for the lizard they were fairly small birds, and he or she is a fairly large lizard, so they just yelled and no lizard eating occurred. I threw on some shoes and grabbed my camera and went out to take a picture, because that's kind of my default reaction to this sort of thing.

I got shots from the front and the side. I think this one turned out better, though in the side one you can see how long its tail is, at least as long as the rest of its body. These are the sorts of things you can run across in your yard if you just listen to the complaining birds.

I Think The Beehive Has Grown...

Well, clearly the bees are not just a random passing swarm stopping over for the day. Sometimes the mass of them seems to bulge out of the entrance hole. I really look forward to seeing what they've built in there sometime, though we haven't yet decided whether we're going to let them just hang out there long term or call a beekeeper to have them relocated. Either way, they're interesting to watch.

Construction At The Park

We went for a hike with the dogs today at Walnut Creek Park. As we wandered through the woods, we noticed lots of new cleared paths and signs of construction, including what looks like it will be a new bridge over the creek. Apparently they are significantly expanding the hike and bike trails through the park. Here's a shot of some happy Texas wildflowers in one of the fields at the edge of the park, where one of the new trails will come out. As you can see, they're using some serious equipment for the trail and bridge construction. I'm looking forward to exploring the new layout sometime later this year.

EDIT: Just as a mention, this shot is in my Nature of Construction album. Clicking on the picture takes you into the album and you can scroll through others in the series.

Dire Consequences

I've been a fan of Nick Hanauer's economic politics ever since seeing his TED talk on income inequality. (Though it's been banned from the TED site, you can find it at Nick Hanauer if you're interested in watching it. I highly recommend it.) Here's a little opinion piece he wrote to his fellow billionaires warning them that the eventual outcome of continued extreme income inequality is that everyone but them ends up bitingly poor and then rises up and kills them. Now maybe the backlash doesn't end up being as dire as actual armed revolution and death to the rich, but if it's even a possibility then I'd think the ultra-rich might want to consider instructing their Congress to swing things a bit back in the direction of the middle class.

Once More To The Lake

I mean, for a picture, that is. This is one more shot from Saturday evening, though this one is from the dock, rather than from a kayak. This Great Blue Heron was hanging out with his duck buddy on a floating barrier near the docks. If you look closely you can see a turtle poking out of the water to their right. I suppose they may have all been singing together, but I couldn't hear them from where I stood. All in all it was a great evening in a very pleasant location.

Everyone Waits On The Congress Street Bridge Bats

Here's a shot I got the other evening from the kayak as we waited for the bats to emerge from the bridge. It's really impressive how many people come out to see that bats, crowding onto the bridge itself and onto the shore below. The water wasn't quite as crowded, but by the time the bats came out there were lots canoes, kayaks, water bikes, paddle boats, and deck boats all around filled with people. All in all there were thousands out just that one evening, and as far as I know that happens most evening during the summer while the bats are active. The crowd is an impressive sight in its own right. If you are ever in the Austin area in the summer months, this is an event worth seeing.

(Interestingly, I thought I posted this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared, so hopefully this time sticks.)

It's pretty impressive the number of people who come out in the evening to see the bats emerge from the Congress Street Bridge here in Austin. Bridge, Boats, and Bats!

Here's a shot I got Saturday night from a kayak underneath the Congress Street Bridge in Austin. We were out there to watch the bats emerge after dusk, and they did not disappoint us. It turned out to be tough to get shots of flying bats in dark conditions on the water in a small kayak, but I tried my best. There were lots of people on shore watching, and quite a few of us on the water as well, so I tried to get a shot that encompassed all of what was going on. This shot misses out on how many people were also watching from up on the bridge, but maybe I can dig up one of those, too. :)

Trying Something New

Yesterday evening my wife and I went to the lake with +Google Local Austin and had some fun times. I got to try paddle boarding for the first time, which was fun and turned out to be a bit of a foot workout as all those little muscles worked to balance me the whole time. My wife was kind enough to take a picture of me out there, so I have visual proof. Later we kayaked out to the Congress Street Bridge to watch the bat colony emerge at dusk. I've seen them before, but watching from the water below the bridge turned out to be pretty amazing. It was hard to get good shots of it from a kayak on the water around dark, but I'll see what I can come up with to post.

I hope all of you are having great weekends, too!

Chicken Coop Progress: Almost Done!

I haven't shared a picture of the chicken coop lately, but we've been progressing steadily. (If not always as fast as my wife would prefer...) Last weekend I finished the nesting boxes, so in the next month or so when the chickens are ready to start laying eggs they'll have a place to do so. You can see the nesting boxes sticking out at the right side of the shot, though somewhat obscured by a tree.

We have little things to do here and there to finish up, but by and large the structure is complete at this point. Our six chickens have a remarkably overdone mansion in which to live, and my wife is happy. As they say, that's a key to a happy life.

I find it interesting that the red doors of the coop and shed look so different in the picture. They're actually the same color, but the shed is a bit more shaded.... more »

I find it interesting that the red doors of the coop and shed look so different in the picture. They're actually the same color, but the shed is a bit more shaded. It's impressive the difference it makes. We're happy with our matching coop and shed, and it sure makes the back yard a homier place.

I'm looking forward to an excellent weekend, and hope you all have a great one, too! See you around. :)___

Well This Was Unexpected...

I was out back working on the chicken coop and happened to look up at the second owl house (Not the one occupied by owlets this year) and the opening looked weird and was moving. Apparently some enterprising bees have recently moved in. This is pretty fascinating. Now I really wish I had a video camera in the owl house. :)

Pink Shoes And The Texas Capitol

Here's another shot from the Austin Graffiti Park. I got to hang out there with +Amanda Retallack, and she was kind enough to sit for a shot with the Capitol behind her. The park goes right up the hillside, and every solid surface is covered with decorative paint. It's pretty awe-inspiring. I'll have shots of some of the individual works to post soon. :)

All By Myself

If you haven't yet watched the most brilliant video of the year so far, you owe it to yourself to do so. It's gone around on Vimeo, but the creator has just uploaded it to YouTube. Check it out and marvel at some great creativity in action making the best of a long night in an airport.

Project: Ball And Cup Toys

In addition to the tic-tac-toe boards I posted about the other day, my wife asked me to make some ball and cup toys out of gathered materials. The cups are burr oak caps and the handles are live oak branches. The balls are insect galls and acorns. The string is from a roll of string from my shop. Well, so it's almost all gathered. The tic-tac-toe pieces my wife and son made out of acorn caps. Thanks to my wife for taking the picture of these, as I didn't have an opportunity this morning.

Hopefully the kids at her event enjoy playing with these, and maybe they'll even be inspired to make some toys for themselves.

Austin Graffiti Park

Today I had the pleasure of going to lunch at the Hope Outdoor Gallery, commonly known as the Austin Graffiti Park. It's the site of a failed condominium development that just got some foundations and retaining walls in place before going under. In the aftermath, graffiti artists began working at the site, filling it full of art.

I don't know whether it's official at this point, but at some point this metal sign appeared at the place, and there are artists working around the clock adding new work and covering older stuff. There were two guys there working while we were there. This was my first time, but reportedly the entire place looks different every time you go, as it's in a constant state of production. I took a lot of shots, but I haven't had time to go through and process any. I just wanted to post this one as a teaser from the... more »

Have a great day!

Project: Seed Pod Tic-Tac-Toe

I finally got around to putting together these boards my wife asked me to make for use by the school kids she works with. They are Tic-Tac-Toe boards made for playing using various seed pods. Each player gets one type of seed pod for their use to represent the Xs and Os. I just cut out the board and used my router to put the cups and grooves into them, and then sanded them. My wife took care of staining them to make them look nicer and last longer. Hopefully the kids have fun with them!

Sad News...

Yesterday when I arrived home and started to pull into the driveway I saw what looked to be a dead bird. I stopped to deal with it rather than running it over, and when I got closer I realized it was one of the owlets. There was no sign of trauma like an animal had gotten it, so my best guess is that it ate a rodent which had ingested rat poison. Starvation and disease are also possibilities, I suppose. Regardless, I'm very sad about it.

We recognize that only about 40% of owlets survive until adulthood, so the odds were that one of the two wouldn't make it, but it's still sad when it happens, and in my opinion even worse if it was killed by poison that our neighbors put out to control pests. So before you put out rat poison, please remember that it's not just the rodents that can be killed by the stuff. Think of the owls and other birds that eat... more »
