Last night I emailed the final draft of PANDEMIC to my publisher at Random House. The fiction-makin' phase of this book is officially over.
After this, the next thing that comes back are the line edits; an editor does a line-by-line grammar and continuity check. I go through these marks and approve or decline them (mostly approve), then send the manuscript back. After that, I get the "page galleys," or 8.5x11 printouts that look exactly like what the hardcover page will look like. That's the last chance to fix things, then it's off to the printer.
PANDEMIC is due out January 21, 2014.
This is the final book in the INFECTED trilogy.

New MONSTROSITY! SHAUN OF THE DEAD is 10 years old (yes, really), Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright bust out a trailer for the new horror comedy THE WORLD'S END, Megan Fox & Will Arnett whoop up some TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, and Disney/Marvel plan for the next great superhero film (and you'll never guess who the heroes are ... no, seriously, you'll never guess). THE WORLD'S END trailer, Megan Fox and Will Arnett in TNMT, and BIG HERO 6 gets psycho.

Ray Harryhausen passed away today. If you don't know that name, he was a filmmaker who pioneered the use of stop-action animation and made some of the greatest monster flicks ever seen. His SINBAD movies and JASON & THE ARGONAUTS inspired me to build Lego monsters and create my own stories at a very early age. And, of course, his CLASH OF THE TITANS from 1981 stands alone as a classic piece of special effects awesomeness.
I watched his movies over and over. As a kid who loved creatures and monsters, there was none higher than Harryhausen. Without a doubt, you wouldn't have seen the creatures of the INFECTED series without him, nor would you have probably seen the well-developed and truly alien species of the GFL series. He set my imagination aflame. The first story I ever wrote, Tentacles, Tentacles and More Tentacles, was, in my young mind, a... more »

Back in 2009 when Kindle 2 was the rage and eReaders were going to rule the world, I did a presentation at Balticon pointing out cell phones would be the primary eBook reading device. With those small screens, people laughed at me ... laughed at me! Well how now, brown smartypants cow? A blog post at http://scottsigler.com/blog/the-future-of-content-delivery-is-here talks about a study showing cell phones are far and away the primary device for reading eBooks.

You may have heard that some peeps are trying to turn my novel NOCTURNAL into a series. Yesterday I finished the "series bible." From Wikipeida, a series bible is "a reference document used for information on a series' characters, settings, and other elements."
This bible outlines the first season, which is projected at twelve episodes. It contains a one-page write-up on each episode, character write-ups and other information that a showrunner would use to make the series a reality. It also contains the pilot script (which I consulted on but did not write, and is awesome), and hopefully some new art.
This is just the first complete draft of the document. The series writers and the producer are reviewing it now; there will be substantial edits in the future. So, while it's "finished," it will probably never be "done."
In effect,... more »

PANDEMIC's publishing date has been pushed back, Junkies: the new release date is Jan. 21, 2014. This is the third and final book in the INFECTED trilogy.
On the third draft of PANDEMIC, I found some issues that weren't up to the quality of plot/science/logic that you as a reader have come to expect — those things had to be fixed. I want this book out as bad as you do, but I'm not going to deliver a sub-par story and expect you to pay your hard-earned money for it. Your time is irreplaceable: I will always treat it with respect and appreciate the fact that you spend it with my stories.
This is a deadline-driven business. We have to release books to put food on the table. I can't spend ten years re-writing to get everything just-so, but the final product still has to be as good as I can make it. I hope PANDEMIC will be worth the add... more »

Imagine you could pay 99 cents for the Season 3 premier of GAME OF THRONES. Don't have to buy HBO, don't have to get a monthly subscription, just buy that episode (or a season pass, perhaps). If half the people who pirated the show paid, that's $500,000 for HBO: in just the first 48 hours after release.

I don't normally listen to Joe Rogan's podcast, but I am listening to this episode with +Scott Sigler . In light of all the emo I'm seeing about Goodreads, hearing Scott talk about his approach to writing and selling his work is a stark contrast. The most important distinction to me is not "major" vs "indie", "professionally published" vs "self-published" or any of that. It is "in control and strong" vs "not in control and weak."
He described his decision to podcast Earthcore - and mind you no one had ever podcasted an unpublished novel at that time - as (paraphrased from memory of 20 minutes ago) "If I can't give this away and create a compelling enough experience to make people want to buy it anyway, then I don't deserve to sell it to them." That's strong. That's in control. That's co... more »
