This place is on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River, and it has great pizza.
My wife and I own a house 140 miles due west of Chicago, which we use as an occasional weekend artists' retreat. Drive another ten miles west, and you reach the Mississippi. Drive across a bridge to a little island/peninsula called Sabula, and you can find this funky place called Bombfire Pizza. The VW van that's had a chunk taken out of the middle and welded back together is indicative of the taste and style of the interior. The guy who owns this place built a big brick oven out back, in which he makes pizzas which, to be honest, are better than anything I've tasted in Chicago. It's officially in Iowa, but it's less than three hours drive from Chi-town.

Open studio at the Cornelia Arts Building, Chicago, May 10
Here is an album of pictures I took during the open studio last week. There were musicians, though they had to play indoors because it was unexpectedly chilly. It seems that my eye was caught mostly by abstract painting this time, but I also saw drawings, some nice figurative paintings, ceramic pieces, and photography.

Today's work in my studio consisted of...
Adding more boxes with prints on them to the wall of Cuban-derived images;
Creating another cardboard machine for the stop-motion animation project.
Next up: doing lithographic prints on the surfaces of all the cardboard machinery and buildings.

For Sale
As an artist on G+, I’ve spent the past two years trying to strike a balance between posting images of my own work, and sharing the work of other artists, particularly by posting interviews with creators of various kinds via my blog. I have never tried to sell my work, or indicated any kind of price on the images that I’ve posted.
So this is highly unusual for me, and I intend to do this only once, but here is a work currently in my studio that I am trying to find a buyer for.
Details: “Hecho en Cuba”, mixed media prints on Japanese paper and cigar boxes, assembled on a custom-made base panel. Size: 72” x 72” x 6”. Date: 2003. Price: $6000.
7000 people have added me to their Circles. If any of you are living in the USA and would like to purchase this piece – or if you know anyone who might – I will arrange for it to b... more »

Studio still life. Materials for nontoxic printmaking (eg sugarlift aquatint) and clean-up. They may be less toxic to me and the environment, but they are certainly harmful to the wallet.

Last week I showed a class of college students in a mixed writing/drawing class how to make artist's books. It always goes down well - you can see eyes widening at the possibilities for creativity that it opens up.
