James Day14,169You're invited to participate in a new G+ #art event called Google First Friday ~  #GoogleFirstFriday .  As with most new things Google First Friday will have humble beginnings. Given time though it will grow to be a great event for artists and art enthusiasts alike, to share the newest works being added to the art world each day. This is an event by and for artists. There's no need to starve or struggle if we all come together in support of each other. Hopefully over time that's what this event will become, a place not only to share your work but to connect with other creatives and to find patrons who love your art.  If you have questions, please check out the monthly art event #TwitterFirstFriday  which I've been curating since early 2014 https://twitter.com/hashtag/TwitterFirstFriday?src=hash. Over the past year it's turned into a sizable art event on Twitter. Please set your calendar for Friday June 5th which will be the first of many  #GoogleFirstFriday  art events to come! Thank you for reading and sharing, James DayGOOGLE FIRST FRIDAY2015-07-03 22:00:00206
Alan Shapiro3,604,746I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. You can watch it online later)Picking a camera bag...what to look for and how to decide what's right for you2013-10-28 01:30:0080

The Tunnel Of Love

Klevan is an urban-type settlement in the Rivne Raion of Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine. Its population is 7,470 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Klevan is accessed via the T1B17 and H22 roads, and is located 28.3 km northwest of Rivne and 50.4 kilometres southeast of Lutsk along the H22. Klevan lies on the Stubla River.

There’s a real place in the Ukraine that looks like this. This beautiful train tunnel filled with greenery is located in Kleven, Ukraine. Locals call it the “Tunnel of Love” and it’s beautiful even when it’s not all green.

I have watched dozens (if not hundreds) of hurricane videos but nothing comes close to the incredible force displayed by Super Typhoon Haiyan at landfall. Around @10:00 things get extremely scary with winds that come dangerously close to an F4 tornado.

This hurricane should extend the Saffir-Simpson scale to 6. The devastation of the coastal cities was absolute.

Wonderful insight.

Why Do We Remember Certain Images?

I float from one genre to another, I have thought about trying to stick with just the one but find it simply too restrictive. I have though found that certain images get a better response than others.

I remember I conversation I had a long time ago with +Alan Shapiro on how people react between certain genres. I know a lot of my landscapes get a better reaction than my street portrait. But why?

A beautiful landscape will give the viewer a means of escape, a release from the day to day life most of us have. It is though fleeting, landscapes are a lot more complicated to set up and take but few are really memorable.

Street portraits differ, they being reality to every day life and when they are portraits of the more unfortunate then the reality can really hit home. Sometimes that's hard to take so a lot of the audience would rather go back to the escapism of a landscape.

But which one will you remember?

For me the portraits will always be in the forefront of my mind, they are more than a two dimensional image on a screen, they are someone, someone's father, mother, son, daughter, which will you remember? ___Wonderful insight.

Wonderful! I need this.

Rubik's Cube Lamp

This fresh design for a lamp is based on the Rubik's Cube and even changes colors depending on the orientation.

From the artist:

Rubik's lamp is an innovative project based on the popular toy from the eighties. Much like the original Rubik's cube, the lamp is composed of 26 smaller cube-like pieces, whose interlocking shapes fit onto each other.

The rotation of each face of the main cube allows the arrangement of up to forty-three quintillion different combinations, each one providing different lighting. Colored patterns and chaotic, kaleidoscopic lighting can be created by not leaving the main rows parallel to each other.

Rubik's Lamp is a creative solution for customized lighting, and, just like the original toy, presents itself as a fun, challenging puzzle.

"Mount Roraima, Venezuela" by Uwe George (National Geographic)

The majestic Mount Roraima is the highest mountain in the Pacaraima Mountains.

Roraima lies on the three borders of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. The mountain is part of Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angel Falls is also part of this beautiful park.

Mount Roraima’s highest point is Maverick Rock at 2,810 meters (9,219 feet), and the whole of Mount Roraima’s fairly flat top surface area is surrounded by 400+ meter (1,312+ feet) high sheer cliffs.

It can be climbed, though all routes besides the Paraitepui route require technical climbing gear. Visitors can get a stunning view of Mount Roraima and the greater Canaima National Park from a memorable helicopter ride.
