#DungeonsandDragons
I was thinking, the other day, about Dungeons & Dragons and how much of my childhood (through much of my adulthood) was spent playing that game. When I first came across it, it came in a blue box with a 48 page book some dice, and a couple figures. At the time, it was very exciting. There weren't a lot of rules, and it required an exceptional level of imagination and desire to role-play (note the way that "role" is spelled there, that's important) in order to play it effectively.

Later on, after I got the gist of it (I was 9 or 10 at this point), I asked my mom to get me the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons books. This was the Dungeon Master's Guide, The Player's Handbook, and The Monster Manual.

I tried DMing right off the bat, but I was very bad at it, and it became apparent as to why (even after buying a couple modules to help me out). I vaguely understood the rules set, but I didn't have any real understanding of the stories behind the different monsters and races. So, I started reading. I gobbled up every bit of mythology that I came across; Greek, Roman (same mythology as Greek, just different names), Japanese, Irish (I loved the tale of Cu'Challain), and Norse. I read the bible, both the Torah and the New Testament. And, to understand strategies and the make up of battle, I read Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". I spent a long time working on voices and studying comedy (Stephen Wright, Richard Pryor, Richard Lewis, Eddie Murphy, Bobcat Goldthwait, Stephanie Hodge, et. al.), and reading up on story telling as well. My dad, as awful a person as he was, was a master storyteller. So, I paid very close attention to how he used words and, more importantly, the silence between words.

I was still playing D&D during this time, but I didn't try to DM again until I was 14 or 15. Around this time is when the religious types were in an uproar about D&D being Satanic, and started having rallies and burning books. It wasn't until years later that I figured out that they weren't actually afraid D&D was Satanic, it was that the game introduced kids to alternative / secular thought. It's hard to look at 6 or 7 pantheons of Gods that have come and gone and not ask yourself, "What makes my religion's God any different from all of this other made up stuff?" As a church leader, I think that I may have been pretty scared of that kind of thinking as well. But, I digress.

When I finally attempted to DM again, I was much more confident in my abilities to create a fleshed out campaign, and encourage the players to role-play along with me. I had gained an impressive amount of knowledge for a young teenager just so I could craft a viable game. And, to me, that was the magic of D&D. I can point to a half dozen things that have made me into the man I am today, and my introduction to D&D would be high on that list.

Which brings me to the reason I was thinking so much about my early experiences with the game. If I were a kid now, I don't think that I would have given D&D (in it's current form) a second glance. It's far too rules heavy, there are too many versions of D&D (I believe that we're on the 5th now), and everything in the game has become "Roll-Play", not "Role-Play". Since the rules are so voluminous now, I wouldn't have spent my time learning about different pantheons, I would have spent my time, instead, on learning rule systems, and saving up for miniatures that are almost necessary to play now. I think that TSR (under Hasbro) has killed the game that gave me such joy throughout most of my life. If and when I introduce my kids to D&D, it will be through storytelling. In the beginning, it will be just me and my boy at the table with nary a piece of paper or die in sight. And, I will describe the tavern he just walked into, and ask him what he wants to do next.

Until september 2014 I was the Game Director of DXMD at Eidos Montreal.
3 years ago Andre Vu, the Brand Director of the DX franchise, and I coined the term 'Mechanical Apartheid'.
Thing is... I am Black (& French...). And Andre is Asian (& French).
When we decided to go all-in on delivering the experience to play as Adam Jensen, an Augmented, in a world agressively segragating his own kind, we actually wanted to offer to our audience something unique. Something that was close and very personal to us: The experience of being torn between 2 worlds and 2 identities. Augs calling you the 'uncle Tom' of the non-augs, non-augs always insecure when you're around, always deeply being scared or appaled by your mechanical body.
Somehow, it was our own individual stories... We wanted to share a little part of our own life experience (on a super dramatized degree, of course) as visible minorities in a world of prejudices sometimes not well tailored for us.
We also used the reference of south africa, israel, even brasil, french and american ghettos and any country ressorting to walls in order to segratgate a part of their own population. We meant it. This was important to us to not half-ass these analogies. BECAUSE THIS IS DEUS EX.
Deus Ex is a very mature and thoughtful franchise that wants to hook gamers on essential questions and considerations: power, control, species, science, sociology, singularity, etc.
Racism is a ey dark part of our human nature and we wanted to treat this subject. It was especially important for ME to treat this.
So it makes me sad and angry that these ignorant people just ASSUME that everyone behind this game is ill-spirited, stupid, and more importantly for me, that they that they are all WHITE. (For them devs==white, gamers==white)
What these bloggers and tweeters did to me here is beyond mere insults: They have degraded me and have literally erased my identity as a black developer and as a black creator that just wanted to share a piece of himself with this game.
I wish that they will feel bad about it. I wish they will have the decency to apologize of their gross false assumptions and accusations. To apologize to all the people back in Quebec that have been working hard FOR YEARS to make this game to happen. But since they have no spine, no shame and no self respect they will simply ignore this post (once again denying me voice, legitimacy and identity) and will at best move on another AAA target to toss their freshly defecated shit at.
They don't deserve anyone's attention. They don't deserve our industry, our games and the dedication we put into them. They disgust me.
TL : DR Asian guy and black guy came up with the term Mechanical Apartheid 3 years ago. Black guy not happy about the SJW shit tweets and wants to call them out and expose their stupidity. Black guy is not their shield."

The people attacking this man are the same bullies that I've been fighting against for months and months now.___

I'm thinking about writing a completely serious romantic novel with the main characters names being:
- Dick McSwinginballs and
- Nipples McGee
as the protagonists. I imagine such dialogue as:
Dick, "Nipples, our sojourn thus far as has left an indelible mark upon my soul."
Nipples, "Dick, I know what you mean, I've experienced a paradigm shift in my view of the world since I met you. In fact, I sometimes mouth the name 'Nipples McSwinginballs' to see how it feels in my mouth."
Dick, smiling gregariously into Nipples's eyes, "I like to think of myself as a modern man, how does 'McSwingingballs-Mcgee' suit you?"

A high functioning Autistic billionaire (also, throw in some Asperger's Syndrome) dies and creates a quest inside his huge MMO world (that he evidently built the engine for, did the artwork / 3D modeling, coded, created a proprietary network, and built a proprietary console and haptic feedback device entirely by himself and the business savvy of one friend)   to find a hidden easter egg to be granted his fortune. The way to find said fortune is to get into the things that said billionaire was into, mainly 80's references. This creates the vehicle to pack the entire book with as much nostalgia as possible. It's the book equivalent of hanging out at a bar with old friends and asking each other things like, "what were your top 5 Spielberg Movies?", "What are your top 5 Atari 2600 games?", "What are your top 5 sci-fi flicks?". If you and your friends made that into a trivia game for money, and one of your friends had a crush on the other one, you'd have the entire plot of this book in one evening. Not to say that that's a bad thing, just to say that it's a fairly shallow thing.

That being said, since I am also a geek, and I also loved D&D, Star Wars, Firefly, etc. I got the same Captain America , "Hey, I know that reference" feeling at least once per page. So, the question I had to ask myself at the end of the book was, "Did I enjoy that book? Or, did I enjoy reminiscing?". Hard to say, but for whichever reason it worked, I'd recommend this book, especially if you'd like a walk down nostalgia road as a fellow geek. 8/10___

And it turns out that his father and mother were sitting with him when the phone call came. And he was very, very ill that day. And they called the parents in, because they weren't sure how long he'd last.
And so his father wrote to me right away, and said "Thank you, thank you" - he hadn't seen him smile since October, and this was in March - and when the phone was hung up, he said "Big Bird called me! He's my friend."
And he closed his eyes. And he passed away.
And I could see that what I say to children can be very important.
And he said "We haven't seen our little boy smile in MONTHS. He smiled, as he passed away. It was a gift to us. Thank you.""___

A friend of mine, Steve,  made a combat simulation video. It's worth a watch. #video   (He's the guy that gets the red dot)

Good discussion about the Whedon thing.

A good Huffpost talk on Joss Whedon getting chased off Twitter by feminist SJWs.

Includes talk about censorship, trolling, #GamerGate  & the blockbot.___Good discussion about the Whedon thing.

It doesn't suck to work for a beer distributor. Sometimes we get beer samples for breakfast.

#Augmentedreality   #phone   #game  This looks like a great app for Halloween. It's an augmented reality game called "Night Terrors". Think of Silent Hills PT in real life.
